Visiting Chicago and about to sign rather nice-sized offer sheet. Is this a smart move by the Bears? Please comment.
As for me, I love it. It puts four pretty interesting players with Vash, He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named, Dante Dub and Ricky at corner. It also allows the Bears to focus their draft attentions at the pass-catcher and safety positions.
#2 max said . . .I like the idea. I am not blown away by Manning but hes better than any corner we would get with the third round pick he'll cost us. It will also allow us to focus on some other areas in the draft. That said I dont see the Bears going for a safety. Im not saying they dont need one but with the cornerback position more secure I see them going for the pass catching tight end, possibly a wide receiver depending on who is still on the board and a linebacker. I dont really understand the need to draft another LB but almost all the mock drafts I have looked at have included a LB with a later pick. If the Bears successfully lock in Briggs and hopefully Hillenmeyer this week then hopefully safety will become the priority behind the TE.

#3 jeff said . . .Any signing of a cornerback is a good signing in my opinion and Manning has showed big play capabilities at times. But, while ill be happy if we get a good TE in the draft, i say we need to keep in mind that the O-line isnt getting any younger. i know its a conservative call, i just hope they keep that in the back of their mind

#4 Reverend Dave said . . .you can't have depth everywhere in today's nfl. i think the manning signing will allow them to basically focus the remainder of the offseason on strengthening the offensive talent.
this defense will keep them in every single football game, without exception. they need to score points.

#5 jeff said . . .What about the burgeoning Briggs issue? If we really think that we are not going to be able to resign him shouldnt we start looking for a LB now so he has time to get up to speed before Briggs goes next season? I dont like the fact that negotiations with Briggs have broken down and that we havent locked up Hillenmeyer either. Im worried about someone like the Saints or Eagles swooping in for Hunter at the last second before the draft. Im not saying that Briggs is worth anywhere near what he is asking. But he was integral last year and Hunter was real solid.

#6 matt said . . .Don't get too defeatist on the Briggs issue yet. If he's not resigned, Jerry Angelo will be crucified. He's a pro-bowl linebacker and the second leading tackler, probably the leading tackler the next five years.
Hunter is expendable. Any lineback finishing that corps will make plays because he'll be unblocked ninety percent of the time.
I'd really like to see this team sign Lance, get another big body linebacker and start using Urlacher as the speed guy on the outside. If he was a pass rushing-type he'd have double digit sacks every year, without question.

sign manning, fine. but please don't put another thought into the defense before we address the offense...it's been the joke of the league for as long as i can remember (Sid Luckman, the creator of the forward pass, would be turning over in his grave to see this disaster) and the bears will not take the next step and win a playoff game until they find a passing game - all facets need to be evaluated - qb, wr, te...the qb talent has been upgraded w/ greise but they need to upgrade through the draft at WR and TE...i'd hate to see the bears draft a defensive player, period...and if they don't resign Briggs to a long-term deal then we might as well convert to communism and share losses for the rest of our lives as Bears fans
