THE DRAFT (in three minutes or less)

Tuesday, May 2, 2006 | Jeff

First, the Bears. There's no way of knowing if these guys are going to make an immediate impact. But I don't want to hear Jay Mariotti shouting about Chad Jackson and Santonio Holmes now. I don't want any more first round receivers. If these guys were top-notch talents, they aren't falling to 26 in the first place. Apparently we got a new fullback and Kiper thinks he'll start and if that makes the running game better, I'm all for it. Manning and Hester make the kick return game better? I hope so. Because it might have been our second biggest flaw a season ago.

The Bears also signed two decent undrafted tight ends. I like Day a lot. I would have liked Pope more.

Here are the drafts I liked:

ARIZONA CARDINALS
I'm in love with two drafts this year and this is one of them. Sitting and ten and getting a quarterback built for that offense was just a great job. Then adding Lutui and Pope when I thought they'd be gone twenty picks earlier...good stuff, Denny Green. They'll still win 6 games.

NEW YORK JETS
I gotta say, I'm impressed. Young GM and very young coach and they didn't panic. They rebuilt the offensive line for the next ten years. They also got the QB they wanted later from Oregon. I like it, Jets, I like it a lot. No chance they win more than 5.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Vernon Davis and Manny Lawson. That's enough. Great fucking draft. The pick I really like: Michael Robinson from Penn State. This guy could be Randel El-esque in his willingness to convert to receiver and returner and the talent is there.

Here are the drafts I hate:

HOUSTON TEXANS
No, you can't. No you can't. Absolutely not. Assholes. Raise your hand if you said the words MARIO and WILLIAMS together before, oh I don't know, two weeks ago.

GREEN BAY PACKERS
Fuck 'em. But did anyone else find themselves captivated by everything William Henderson had to say on the telecast.

When does football start?

How come there are no conspiracy theorists talking about this one? Reggie Bush going to the Saints reminds me of the Knicks getting the first pick in 1985.

Unless people get excited enough and ticket sales go up. He's already got the number one jersey in the league . . .
