Luck Be My Lady

Tuesday, October 17, 2006 | Jeff

Sometimes I think we forget this is sports. I know Jay Mariotti has forgotten it because today was not the day to be writing about Rex Grossman's inefficiency or why these aren't the '85 Bears. No. Last night was about something else...

How much fun is it to love a sports team? To go from deflated to exhilarated on the flip of a coin. To be surrounded by a dozen other fans and leap and scream and rally behind 53 guys you've never met and probably would never want to. Tha's what last night was about. It was amazing.

I don't care about the 85 Bears. I don't care about the Super Bowl. I care about the 6-0 Chicago Bears. The 2006 Chicago Bears. They are writing their own legend.

I'm never going to forget last night. Maybe ever. Check your pessimism at the door. This is sports, kids. And last night's what it's all about.

Yes Jeff, I am excited too!!! The 2006 Bears have overcome the NFL's communistic salary cap to be what Lovie has called a team of density (oops, destiny!). Now if he will use T-Rex's cretaceous performance as an excuse to give Griese the keys to the offense we will be all set to run the table and win the Super Bowl! Let's not forget that Griese has the secret to an undefeated season embedded in his DNA. The 2006 Bears have already done what the greatest team of all-time ('85 Bears) failed to do which was to win on Monday night. Now all they have to do is break the Miami jinx on Nov.5th and it will all be downhill from there. Go Bears, you can DO it!!!

The quarterback was atrocious last night but it is still only his thirteenth start. Rex will be fine, he'll make mistakes and the defense will cover his ass. But a question. If you can't lose throwing 4 picks and losing 2 fumbles, how can you lose?

Jeff, I hope you are right and Rex will come around. I just don't want things to turn out like Bush and Rumsfeld. When a person deserves a demotion due to horrifyingly inept performance they should get one. Not changing horses in midstream is probably a good idea for the Bears since they are going good, though.

Well said, Jeff. Mariotti's column is tone deaf to the whole reason we're fans. Yeah this was a reality check; yeah Grossman better find ways to stop the bleeding when he's as off as last night -- but most of all, this was a gutsy improbable win that we should revel in. The Bears showed a never give-up character, and I love the confidence and class of the team (Urlacher after the game going out of his way not to bad-mouth the offense... Lovie not over-reacting, like Ditka screaming his head off at Harbaugh)... These may not be the equals of the '85 Bears -- but i'm also grateful that there's no apparent back-stage drama like there was in '85 and the disappointing seasons that followed.

Forget about comparisons to the '85 Bears, last night it looked just like the 2005 Bears! No offense whatsoever, the Bears defense single-handedly CLAIMED the game, with the cherry on top coming from Devin Hester. And if Devin didn't score that return, you knew the Bears D was going to take care of it.

Jeff asks "If you can't lose throwing 4 picks and losing 2 fumbles, how can you lose?" My answer -- by playing just about anyone but the Arizona Cardinals - probably the only team that can self-destruct so perfectly in such a situation.

This was a beautiful game, but let's hope the Bears spend a lot of time reflecting and improving - it is scary that a team like Arizona can completely shut down our offense, and offense that stunned the Seahawks just a couple weeks ago. The offense needs to adjust, and Rex needs to stop throwing awful passes, immediately.

I don't think they shut down our offense, though. I think Rex Grossman went out there last night and played one of the worst games any player in any sport could ever play.

I don't think I have seen a worse performance by a highly capable player -- ever.

But I am a believer, because I kept thinking Rex would recover and score on the winning drive.

The best thing has to be that when you suck that bad -- it is easier to forget.

Game ball to Maynard for at least keeping the Cards in their end when Rex wasn't handing them the ball in ours.

i mean what happened last night just doesn't happen. and i've never seen one player, especially on defense, take over a game like urlacher did last night. he essentially willed that win.

I agree with Jeff. Rex played horrible, and yes I am glad it was against a team that loves to give up late victories. That being said this was a character building game. Rex will have a chance to watch the tape and get even better hopefully learning from his many many mistakes and it gave our team(defense) a chance to really play hard. Urlacher is an animal and he showed the world that last night. I think after the bye week we will all appreciate romping the 49ers and all will be right with the world. I also recal a moment during the game last night praying too. We all must have been. GO BEARS!!

Wow, your offense sucks. The real Grossman emerged last night. Trust me I've followed this guy since high school, and he'll never let you down, until ths spot light is on him.

It's going to be a long years and hope you don't think the D can bail you out like that every game.

Remember you defense didn't exactly stop Arizona last night. Itwas there conservative play calling that gave you the game. Had they stuck to the game play they would've buried your butts in the desert.

You guys were exposed last night. On defense you pressure Grossman and stop the little running threat you have. And on offense take it to them. Smack'em right in the chops. When they did you saw Chicago's defender drop like flies, i.e. Mike Brown, Ricky Manning.

Oh well it was a good game.

#11 jeff said . . .

Wasn't Grossman brilliant in the spotlight on Sunday night like two games ago? And if you think a defense scoring two touchdowns and taking over a football game is being exposed, then I hope we're exposed each and every week of the season.

Even tho I am not a big fan of the new Monday night crew on ESPN (When I lived in Chicago I used to listen to the radio and watch the game) I agree with one statement that was said. The Chicago Bears played like a true team last night. When one part failed, the other part picked up the slack. Last night's game reeked of the 2005 season, it's true. But this team is different, this team is better. Thanks to the D and Special teams (GO HESTER!) they got the job done. I found it funny what Urlacher said after the game. Arizona didn't cover him! He was all over the place and not any body from the offense really covered him! I think he is too fast. I can't wait for the rest of the season! Also...look, The Bears are not The Cubs, there are no jinxes with this team!

our boys were destined to win that game last night. Urlacher is a machine! did anyone else get really annoyed when they had charles barkley in the book for the entire 2nd quarter? he even got in arguments with tony kornheiser!

#14 josiesvin said . . .

okay, a lot of stuff said here is true our offence played like shit and for the first three quarters so did our defence try to think back to all those missed tackles and miscues(even urlacher) made during this game. do i feal the bears got lucky? no, and yes. no because like jeff said this is what sports teams do every week in many different sports 2 fumbles for 2 tds 1 returned punt this ain't luck this is their job. 1 missed FG now that was luck. but fuck it chalk one up for our blues bros. see ya in two at the 'Woods. Bear Down.

I screamed, I cried, I laughed. . . I punched a hole in the wall. This is right there with Mike Brown's back-to-back INT returns for touchdowns back in 01. One for the ages. We needed this game to happen. We didnt deserve to win, but ill take it. I think the boys were starting to read a little to much of their press clippings and this was a wake up call.

Note: Pretty boy Matt is a going to be a damn good quarterback in the future

We have got to be more careful with the football..go more for the short to intermediate routes instead of airing it out all game (this game really reminded me of the Carolina playoff loss)..jones was doing a decent job (3.5 ypr) and use more of Dez Clark who played well. Moose also had a second bad game in a row..I think we should make a move to pick up Porter, Moss or McCareins to shore up or pretty thin receiving corps (if any one of our receivers go down it could be really tough)...But i like the tremendous heart or boys showed in the 4th...that is not luck..you have to play all 60 minutes and we did and the cards did not

Did anyone else notice the seemingly unconscious slip in Dennis Green's tantrum/logic last night?

"They are what we thought they were," Green said. "We played them in preseason. Who the hell picks a third game in preseason like it's [meaningless]? We played them in the third [exhibition] game. Everybody played three quarters. The Bears are who we thought they were. That's why we took the damn field. If you want to crown them, just crown their ass. We let them off the hook."

Take a close look at what you just said Dennis -- yes, that's right, you played us for 3 quarters in a pre-season game -- AND YOU PLAYED US FOR 3 QUARTERS LAST NIGHT. There are 4 quarters in a game, dude, and you're not coaching like you understand that.

Go Bears!

from fox sports: Incredible win on Monday night for ‘Da Bears. Rex Grossman looked awful, the running game was non-existent, and the receivers dropped balls from start to finish. But the defense and special teams showed up, and showed up big. Overcoming a 20-point second half deficit, returning two turnovers for scores, and taking a fourth quarter punt to the house — Chicago pulled off a miracle in the desert. Brian Urlacher — a legitimate MVP candidate at this point — recorded an unheard-of 19 tackles on Monday night. Good teams win the games they’re supposed to win. Great teams win the ones they shouldn’t. Chicago’s winning ‘em all.

250 lbs. and 5' 8" - That's me...And I was on the edge last night...and I said to my friends, if the Bears come back from 20 to 3--I'll do the WORM. When Hester came back those 83 beautiful yards, I couldn't help but GET MY WIGGLE ON! I wish someone would've taped it... In any case yes players of the game Urlacher...Urlacher...Urlacher...in the 4th quarter he was unstoppable! Must also give credit to Andersen, Hester, Maynard, Gould, and Krutz. Yes this is truely a TEAM. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't all but 2 or 3 of Urlachers tackles come in the fourth quarter? Geez... GO BEARS!

I was at the game last night and my digital camera flew about 10 feet in the air during the punt return. Best game I ever went to!

After the game when everbody was filing out of the stadium us Bears fans were chanting " Green Bay sucks , Green Bay sucks!" "6 and 0 , Miami! Miami! "

Classic, high fives everywhere

"Ridiculous!" That was the analysis in most of the e-mails I've gotten in the last few days. And, QUITE FRANKLY (those words just make me think of pointless shouting for some reason), that's all the analysis this game deserves. Yes, the Bears were thoroughly outplayed. But they won. They're 6-0. I'm more interested in comparisons to the 2006 Eagles, Seahawks and Chargers than the 1985 Bears, and over the full course of the season so far, the Bears have still been the best team in the NFC. So, relax and enjoy the win.

Ive been a bears fan for 30 years, and this is definitely one of the best teams I have ever seen! Infact this team is probably the best "all around team"...great D, great special teams, great running game, great recievers.....BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED SINCE LAST YEAR OUR QUARTERBACK POSITION IS STILL THE WEAKEST PART OF THIS TEAM!!! We are elite everywhere else why in the fuck cant we have one of the top 5 QBs in the league! Could you imagine if this team had a true leader like a Payton Manning, or shit even Matt Linheart showed he is a better "leader" (with way more composure than Grossman)
Its almost like if we dont jump down your throat, in the first 5 minutes with a Hail Mary Bomb, then you really have no reason to be threatened by our offense . SORRY REX YOU ARE TO MUCH OF A YAHOO...AND YOU SURE AS HELL NO BRETT FAVRE!
GO BEARS!

Guys. It's my fault. I have great running backs and a O-line stocked with pro-bowlers and I just went ahead and let Rex hang himself. I have a hard-on to be like Mike; Martz that is. Lovie should probably take on the play-calling. I suck. Please forgive my dumb dumb dumb ass.

To the moron who thinks that I referred to your lucky comeback as being exposed is a complete idiot.

I think you should understand that your defense cannot be expected to pull out a game like that every week.

When I said exposed, I think all you have to look at is three areas.

First, your run offense sucks. Jones and that head case Bensen don't scare anybody. Thay're like a one, two love tap.

Secondly, With an inept runnig attack you put Grossman in a possition to have to throw. Being the impatient person that he is, he's vulnerable to throwing the INT.

Third, although your defense may be good, I don't believe they're that dominating. Their numbers may say one thing, however when it starts getting into the heart of the season, I believe teams will have them figured out.

Arizona actually used Minnesotas game plan, which was to pressure the QB, run the ball to set up the pass. It worked pretty well for three quarters.

If they play like that down the stretch, it will be a repeat of last year.

Sanchez, you must have gotten a little to much water on your brain when you swam across the river. This is free country and i'll say whatever I want to say whether you like it or not you little fuckin greaser.

Unlike that piece of crap third world country you ecaped, we allow such things to be said.

Now, first I'm not a Vikings fan or any other team fan. I'm a football fan. My being critical of the Bears has nothing to do with anything. I just happen to believe the Bears are overrated, especially Grossman.

If you knew anything about football, you would have to agree with my analysis. Every team that came close to beating the Bears all used pretty much the same game plan. Stop the run, pressure the QB, and go right at the defense.

So I really don't give a shit whether you or anybody else on this site support my comments or not. If you don't like it tough shit. You and any others can go pound sand you little friggin greaser.

October 22, 2006

#33 Sanchez said . . .

Stop the run, pressure the QB and go right at the Offense. Dude that is the gameplan of every team in the NFL, every week!

You're a 'fan of football' that likes to post negative comments on Bears-centric blogsite? You think we need your fair and balanced opinion? You think we care? Believe me, we don't and if you were a fan of a team, you'd realize that.

All of us watched the game, we watch every game. As fans, we know what the strengths and weeknesses are. You watching one on Monday night does not make you qualified to assess the Bears season.

So, when some asshole 'fan of football' drops in and calls out the friggin obvious and tries to piss on our parade you can expect that they will get a response.

One other thing...so I post with the name Sanchez and drop in some spanish that I had translated by google and you assume I am a greaser? Wrong again Dave.

October 22, 2006

#34 Dave said . . .

Again you greaser fuckin monkey. I'm not here to give you a fair or balanced assessment. I'm here to piss on your parade and tell you your team is suck and is overrated. I don't give a fuck if you don't care or not.

As far as you watching every game. I'm sure you do. Hell what else do you have to do beside drink and smoke crack. How do I know that? Because your comments tell me so.

Some teams don' t stop the run or pressure the QB every week as part of their game plan. Ya see setting your game plan is about exploiting the other teams weaknesses. Which is why I referred to Chicagos QB and running backs. And I didn't say go right the offense, dipshit. I said go right at there overrated defense. Why because I believe your defense is all talk, including that little fag Her-slacker. The guy sounds like a friggin retard when he talks.

Your defensive backs are a bunch of candy asses who can't even make it through a whole season. Mike Brown in particular is the biggest pussy of them all.

Manning that little fuckin gang banger, hell he'll most likely be in prison with some of your brothers from across the border for his chicken shit assault.

So if you want to talk shit fag boy, go ahead. I'll stick to my "UNBIAS ANALYSIS."
