Lovie In the Time of Cholera

Friday, December 29, 2006 | Jeff

Note: You can still vote for the MVB on the post below. Winner to be announced next week.

Don Banks says they are going to be the least regarded 14-2 team in league history. Their defense stinks. They barely beat Tampa and Detroit. The Cowboys are better. The Saints are better. The Eagles are better. I try not to pay attention.

But Shakespeare said it best in Macbeth: "Who can be wise, amazed, temperate and furious. Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man." My problem, my eternal problem is that I love the Chicago Bears. Dawn to dusk - in sun and shadow. I take the things people say about them to heart the way one takes criticism of friends and family to heart. And I'm sick to my stomach.

Win this conference. Dominate this conference. Blow out Brett Favre Sunday night and walk throuh the tatters of mediocrity. Get to Miami. And for the two weeks before that game, we'll sing your praises on North State and West Broadway. In Wrigleyville and Nashville. Just...win.

It is Friday and I'm working on a new play and nothing's common and I got ESPN on the TV. The frustration is building heading into a 2007 that can be historic for all of us. I believe in this team more than any Bears team in a very, very long time. But I go back to Shakespeare.

"Nothing will come from nothing."

Perhaps Mr Banks ought to learn a bit more Shakesphere:

"O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die."
--From Romeo and Juliet (V, iii, 169-170)

This is a blog about the bears still right? :)

As an English graduate, I have never seen such an amazing confluence of football and classic theatre. Well played, and something for the football talking heads to remember as we head into the playoffs: everyone in Othello thought they had Iago figured out. Until the final act.

True BH, but remember, it's not luck; it's skill.

As Willy said: It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves.

The same thing happens to every team in the league, there is not one team out there that people arent criticizing something. For San Diego its the receiving game and suspect defense, For Indy its the D, for Cowboys its everyting, for New Orleans its defense, for Baltimore its the offense (although they are pretty complete). There will alwayse be negative speculation and thats a fact. Lets roll the Pack then continue to roll whatever slappy team comes to Soldier Field two weeks from Saturday or Sunday and then lets win the NFC Championship game the next week and on to the Super Bowl. GO BEARS, Lets win it all and then we dont have to hear any more negative speculation until next year.

Skrew Don Banks. What people don't understand right now is the Bears haven't been running THEIR denfense lately. They are running other situations that they could potentially run into during the playoffs.

I hope people don't beleive in the Bears come playoff time because then we can show everyone what they are all about. All they need is us Bears fans.

My parents are both Packer fans and the old man and I are both yellers. Should be good times at the District homestead this weekend.

Incidentally, two of my favorite Shakespearean insults work well for Packer fans:

You should be women and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.

Thou art a general offence, and every man should beat thee.

This comment doesn't exactly fit under this heading, but I don't know where else it fits better.

Heard a radio commentator say that he loved to watch the Bears and Dennis Hastert returning punts.

Maybe the death scene from Hamlet is appropriate:

Alas, poor Farve! I knew him;
a fellow of infinite passing,
of most excellent scrambling."
--From Hamlet V, i well, sort of...

Hey Berry Happy,

In reference to your post #2, does that mean Iago was not who they thought he was?

Well I was as wrong as bestiality. Apparently they did mail it in and pull all the starters (er, those that were healthy enough to be pulled). Starters or no, I did not see defenders flying to the ball and dishing out vicious hits. That was not Bears football. Excuse me, I must now puke up the tasty beer I drank tonight.

Maybe Favre will be available next year. If we had some steady, good, consistent play we would truly be a threat.

I don't think that Rex's flashes of brilliance every couploe of games offsets his more frequent spasms of SUCK!

It looks like the delusion continues at 13-3. The Bears fans truly think they have something special even though their team can hardly eke out a victory against lowly teams like Detroit, Minnesota, and Tampa. Then when a non-losing up-and-coming good-looking team like the Packers totally demolish their team that wanted to win so badly that they even tried a desperation fake punt, comes along, they continue the delusion by rationalizing the loss somehow. Wake up! Favre still rules the Bears!
