Monday Yet?

Friday, December 8, 2006 | Jeff

My good friend David Haugh breaks in the Tribune today that Brian Griese has been receiving snaps with the first team all week and the Bears are prepared to make a change as early as halftime Monday night in St. Louis.

With Tommie's season in danger and a quarterback change possible, Monday night just became a very interesting ballgame for the Chicago Bears.

The best thing about the Monday night game is that it leaves Sunday open for a marathon of Emmanuelle movies.

No Pat... The best thing about MNF is the work place hangover everyone is masking. Its even better after a win :)

Did I call it or what? A few posts ago I reiterated my continuing support for Rex, but said that he has exactly 2 quarters to right the ship. It would be too much to ask Lovie to _start_ Griese, but give Rex another couple quarters and if he's still not up to snuff, a halftime switch gives Lovie the right political and team-momentum situation to make the move.

Of course, I'm sincerely hoping that doesn't happen, and that Rex finds his game again and we ride strong into the playoffs on his shoulders. But if not, I'm prepared to see what a Griese-led Bears team looks like.

There's some funny shit to be found on the Trib's reader comments page:

" 10. After two picks Aikman and Buck brokeback mountain twins aren't nowhere as rough on Romo as they were on Rex.

So I wasn't the only one perplexed on how down they were on us last game. Are they from Minnesota originally or something?

I have an erie feeling about clinching so early. It cannot be good. It cannot be bad. That is why it scares me. Injuries are piling. Now Harris is done for the year. We didn't get Tony Parrish. These portentous omens mean only one thing unfortunately: Playoffs = One and Done.

Funny saying a bud shared with me that I'd figure I'd pass along regarding Rex and having to "put up" or "shut up" Monday night:

When the tide goes out we'll see who is swimming naked

Lets face it, this defense is rock solid, the best in the league, even with a few injuries we are still going to be a top five defense if not continue to be the best. A top five defense is still good enough to win a superbowl but we have to counter that with a pick up in the offense. Any one of our backup front four would probably start on any other NFL team, they are good, real good. I sincerely hope Rexy gets his groove back. I dont want to see Griese and I dont want Lovie to have to make that switch. So turn it on Rex, and just be efficent, I think 100 yards or so of passing and 1 or no turnovers will allow him to stay in the game for the second half. You dont have to be Montana or Namath in their prime, just be efficient.

I am not going to blame the weather but I've heard that any QB would have struggled in those conditions last Sunday. Im not saying its all the weather's fault cuz Rex made some boneheaded decisions but lets see what happens in the dome.

Excuses are like a$$holes- everyone has one and they all stink. Crappy weather has always been an advantage, not a disadvantage for the Bears.

Requirement #1: ability to play in cold, rain, mud, without crying to yo ma-ma.

Rams are just about the worst in the league against the run. If the Bears don't plug Jones and Benson 40-45 times, Turner needs to be fired. That leaves 20 or so passes for Rex to either save himself or shit a brick and fizzle. I think we all want Rex to turn it around and I think there is a good chance he will. It's a beautiful thing that we have backup with a decent track record though, ain't it.

"I have an erie feeling about clinching so early."

We have clinched merely a playoff berth. We do not have a first round bye or home field advantage. These things must be achieved before we can worry about becoming too lax.

The playoffs may be just a tease dangling above our heads like fake mistletoe.. uh-uh, here comes my "Eyore" personality again... "not much of a house...."

I'll try to snap out of it before Monday's game.

I have to admit, I like Griese's attitude. I am not sure of his abilities but he seems to have a professional/teamworking type tone when it comes to thinking about the team and not just himself.

He's attitude could be "produced". He is a veteran of the game, he could be saying what he thinks the coaches/team want him to say.
This Monday will be a tell-tale for what the rest of the season/off-season (if we have one) will be like.
Nothing like stating the obvious...

Well, I have to admit I'm bummed that things don't seem to be working out for Rex. I saw the flashes that made fans drool:

The pass around Peppers in the playoff loss at the goal line

The pass against Detroit where he faked going out of bounds and fired a laser into the hands of Clark

These are the passes that most NFL Qb's don't or can't make.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, he's hit a wall.

With Rex its difficult to judge exactly why. The only other QB who's early career even closely resembles his is Phil Simms, meaning that they both suffered freak injuries early in their career. Rex isn't a rookie, but he certainly isn't a 4-year vet. I wonder if he's hit a wall similar to Ben R's first season with the Steelers, when he all but admitted he was out of gas by the time they lost to the Patriots in the playoffs.

What he needs is Chevy Chase to teach him a little Caddyshack Zen I guess, complete with the sonar noise.

Well this was inevitable, but I really hope Rex does his thing on MNF. The guy just needs to relax, and, like many of you said, be EFFICENT. He dosent have to be a playmaker. The defense is stout, the running game is solid. Screen Passes, quick outs and slants, they are your best friend Rex....I know he had success early just heaving the ball up to Berrian, but you cant try it 10 times a game and expect much. I dont think those are even designed plays, more like Rex just telling Bernard to "GO LONG" like theyre playing in the backyard. I know Rex CAN do it, but now its time to show it, for his own sake, I hope he does monday.

I think we need to keep in mind that part of the reason Turner goes long is to open up the runnig game and get that eigth guy out of the box. He will go long at least once Monday, count on it.

Berrian had his man beat against Minny. Unfortunately Grossman didn't realize old man Winter was farting in his general direction. The ball stalled and then did a nice dead duck impersonation before it was picked off. Hopefully that's the last time Rex tries to heave a long ball into the wind in Soldier field after November.

Pessimism reins on this site ::sigh::

Look guys; this damn glass is way more than half full. How about everyone get a tad bit positive. Hell we won the division, we have a great starter QB and a darn good back up. Plus our "road show" is down hill Rams -> Bucs -> Lions -> Pack. We have ample opportunity to fix the QB issue (well, except for the Green Bay game, damn it, that's still a must win!) well before playoff time. Things are bright!

The Rams will not be able to stop the Bears run and we all can watch the coaches work to fix this machine so its all in A-one ready to go condition!

What we want come Monday is a clear direction. If Rex is gonna $hit the bed, now's the time to do it. If Rex is gonna rock-n-roll, now's the time to show us. The worse thing that could possibly happen is for Rex to have a C game. That's why I say he got to get graded on a College Grad School scale: A, B or F. If he has a C or D game, it sthe showers.

Bigger picture is the Bears are a force to contend with.

Oh for Cripes Sake MM!

I don't know what I would do without your boundless enthusiasm. I am NOT being a naysayer.. just a hesitationalist. I am hesitant about the confidence I hope I have in the Bears Offense. I am reluctant about the ability of the Defense to handle another 40 mins on the field without somebody getting hurt and I am questioning YOUR sanity!

Okay okay. I am only kidding. I don't question your sanity, but I have serious doubts about mine at the end of this season. I can't bleed any more. My heart is sinking lower and lower in my chest. I ache for some positive stuff to cling to. YES 10-2 rocks, but it seems like we are sqeaking by!

I would love to think that this play calling and this over-misdirected-confidence of Rex G is all a conspiracy of Lovie's and that miraculously, the '06 (pronouced "ot-six") Bears will pop out of a primordial stripper cake at the Super Bowl and that Urlacher will shove all the naysayers up Brady's ass (he might like that...)
I am excited and scared all at the same time. I feel like my bunge cord is about to snap. I feel like that especially when Rex throws deep on first down, I turn my head away/close my eyes/cross my fingers and pray.
I love football and I am hooked.
I need a Guinness...

WOW. Arizona just narrowly escaped another self-destruction and beat Seattle today. If Dallas falls to N.O. (difficult but not as improbable as Seattle's loss today), then Da Bears can clinch home-field with a Monday night victory. Go Saints, Go Bears!!

Close but not quite, Jonathan. Although a win tomorrow puts a fork in Seattle (head to head) and Dallas (conference record), New Orleans is only 2 games back on the loss side. We gotta win 2.
