The Gabe Reid Principle

Tuesday, December 26, 2006 | Jeff

Every analyst has a theory on how best to conduct your football team at the end of the season. Boomer says play em, Marino says don't...etc. With the Packers coming to Chicago Sunday night and unbelievably playing for an 8-8 season and a possible playoff berth, the Bears suddenly have a decision to make. Do they go all-out and risk injury to end the Pack's season and maybe Favre's career on a found-your-wife-with-another-dude downer?

The answer is...OF COURSE. These are the Packers. For ten years they've stomped on us while #4 basically set passing records in Soldier Field. Now we return the favor. Sunday night we'll do it with our newly invented, Tim Ryan-coined "Screw around" scheme. I call it the Gabe Reid Principle. What does the GRP entail, you ask?

Lots and lots of Gabe Reid. Gabe Reid in the flat. Gabe Reid over the middle. Gabe Reid down the sideline. I want A.J. Hawk to wake up at 4:24 Monday morning in a pool of his own sweat - struggling to let out the two words haunting his dreams. "Gabe Reid, Gabe Reid" The defense has its own GRP - its called BEDtime (Blitz Every Down). Sunday Ron Turner let the genie out of the bottle and the genie was wearing #82. I've got my three wishes ready.

More Gabe Reid. More Gabe Reid. More Gabe Reid.

Pull out the stops gentlemen, it's time to put #4 down. Play em all, blitz em all. Farve has eaten my lunch for years (or has it been generations).

Did you really see enough of Gabe Reid to think he deserves all this playing time and credit or are you just fucking with us? I want to see everyone play and I want Green Bays playoff hopes down the shitter.

I hear ya PO. I'd love to see Brett carted off on a damn strecher. I wouldn't shed a tear to see that boys career come to a fast end.

I guess you cant say Gabe without saying Gay....Gaaayybe....nope cant do it. It seems as though McKie might be down too, lets suit up JD Runnels and see what the kid can do instead of using Gay Reid at the fullback spot. Not a whole lot to lose this week and if JD Runnels does well maybe we have another weapon come playoffs.

I almost forgot to say how happy I am that the Bears game was moved to Sunday night on NBC so now I can get schlitzed playing the Madden drinking game for New Years Eve while watching my favorite team beat up on the Pack, who at that time probably wont have any playoff hopes and will be playing for nothing as the prior games that day I am sure will have determined by then that the Pack have no shot at playoffs even with a win. New Years Eve, Bears football on a national primetime broadcast, lots of beer, the thought that knowing the Bears are the #1 seed in the playoffs, that night it cant get any better!!!

Rashied baby. . . more Rashied. And for the love of god could we stop puttin Hester at cornerback. . . he had trouble covering Mike Williams who had 5 drops last game. I mean hell, Mike Williams was a better defender on himself than Hester was.

I love all of this jovial banter during this festivus season about the Bears spanking the Pack. However, what is more important . . . a win over the Packers or a run at the Super Bowl?

Let's just keep that in mind. My three wishes as I rub on the Lovie Smith magical lamp would be . . .

1. The revival of a tough and aggressive Bears defense as we enter the playoffs.
2. No injuries and rest for the Bears weary.
3. A dominating run game with 250+ yards from any of our 3 talented running backs.

Bear Down!!!

P.S. Oh, by the way, I was in Dallas for Christmas and attended the Dallas vs. Philly game with my in-laws, and we can beat both of these teams!! Go Bears!!

Yeah I watched the Cowboys, Eagles game on Monday too, it was a nationally televised game in case you didnt know. Just cuz you were there doesnt mean no one else saw the game and can comment on wether or not we can beat the Cowboys or Eagles. We're happy for you that you were in attendance.

I say we go and smack the Pack. If we're so great, we can lay it all on the line on Sunday and also take the Super Bowl. What a great matchup to end the season!

PO'd: the Packers can still make the playoffs if they beat the Bears and a couple other teams lose (Atlanta and the Giants I think).

So... this game DOES still matter for the Bears. We are in the unique position to singlehandedly kill the Packers post-season hopes. And, rumor has it, if the Packers don't make the playoffs this year, Favre probably won't be back next year.

How beautiful would it be for Favre's last game to be an annihilation at Soldier Field? Please Bears, win this one!!!

JONATHAN: If you read any of my past blogs I already addressed this situation. And what I said still stands true....READ CAREFULLY NOW DUMBASS....when the Bears and Pack play the Pack probably WILL NOT have any playoff hopes even if they beat the Bears. This is because the Bears/Pack game is the Sunday night game, which happens to be the LAST game of the regular season becuase its the NBC Sunday night game. DO YOU UNDERSTAND what I'm saying now....by the time the Pack plays the Bears on Sunday night, the other games will BE OVER. And that means that by that time the Bears/Pack game starts, based on who won or lost earlier in the day, it will already be determined that the Pack cannot go to the playoffs even if they win meaning they have nothing to play for. Does this make sense to you or do I need to make a connect the dots picture to spell it out?

If I recall correctly, when Lovie took the job, he said priority number one was to beat the Packers. I don't know what that means personnel-wise for this game, but I sure as shit don't expect them to mail this one in.

To be fair to myself, I coined "screw around". Here is what Ryan said that I paraphrased:

"I think on defense, they are doing stuff they haven't done all year a) to show people different looks that are going to be studying them for the post season and b) to get their defenders uncomfortable for the post season...

Even in talking to Lovey in that second half that way it went with Tampa last week I said I was really surprised as far up as you guys were that you weren't in your cover 2... He said we're just trying to do stuff to give our guys different looks to get them uncomfortable. You never know what's going to happen in the playoffs."

I still say this is good analysis. Total of 11 first downs the week before and 3 in the first half against the Lions. They are toying with these teams. As the will with the Pack. They might lose because Farve is great but maybe they will learn something in all the R and D.

#20 The Pack is Back said . . .

It looks like #4 is still great. The only reason the Bears have had some success against the Pack recently is that the Packer's were in transition. Even though the game was totally meaningless to the Packers, the Bears felt they needed some momentum for the playoffs and put their best foot forward and they were demolished. They were even so desperate as to try a fake punt!
