To An Athlete Dying Young

Tuesday, December 5, 2006 | Jeff

Dear Rex,

In my heart of hearts, I think you know about our little website. Probably learned about it when you googled "Rex is an asshole" or something like that. I'm writing to you today because I just finished reading Jay Mariotti's best column in years and wanted you to hear directly from us. The fans. The ones who fill the seats. The ones who buy the shirts just because your name is on the back.

I know the boo's suck. I know you'd rather not hear them. But you have to understand where we're coming from. We've been through shit head after shit head taking snap after snap and we've had enough. We want you to be the answer...the guy...the future. We want you to lead this team into the playoffs and help them with their first title in 21 years. We want this so badly that every mental mistake and poor throw rips at our guts. It physically hurts. It sends us to Mirer and McNown...to Burris on Sunday night and Quinn on Thanksgiving.

We don't want you to be Brett Favre. We hate Brett Favre. He's the fucking Anti-Christ. I'm okay with you taking shots down the field but not at the expense of first downs. Completing deep balls won't earn our respect and silence our mouths. Not turning the ball over will. Not putting the league's best defense in a hole will.

Start Monday night, Rex. Start Monday night by being smart with the football. Be invisible. Remember your performance during the Jets game? Neither does anyone else. It might have been your savviest performance in the last two months. You never made the mistake. It's on you now. Because whether they say it out loud or not, Jerry and Lovie will not allow you to start a playoff game if you continue to flounder down the stretch. Start Monday night and do what Favre has always failed to do: play smart indoors.

I'm going to be into this game. I'm going to put every thing I've got behind you. But if you shit the bed, I'm not going to have the energy to wash the sheets. The kitchen's closing at the Last Chance Diner and I just ordered the #8. But buddy...the #14 is starting to look pretty damn good.

Bear down,

Jeff

Again, as I've said before, I think us die hard fans that post on this site care more about the outcome of the team than the players do. Sure, there are a few players who truly love the game and care about this team more than their own family, much like me. But a lot of players are just collecting a fat check and living the dream by doing something they are good at. Go Rex, I love ya man and I need you to succeed on Monday night.

Amen, brother. Great posting. As for one who has bled Bears blue for decades, I can agree with you completely. We love this team, and its players and coaches -- as long as they don't make us feel foolish for doing so.

No real Bear fan will go to Soldier's and boo anyone on our team - no matter what may be being thought.

Let's home the dome is the answer to getting Rex's confidence (and competence) back.

Go BEARS ! (and GO REX)

A little Zen koan for Rex:

Lovey, a football coach and zen master, received a young quarterback who came to inquire about Zen.

Lovey served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The young quarterback watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"

"Like this cup," Lovey said, "you are full of your own doubts and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

Clear your mind, Rex. It is all there before you, brother.

I'm a real Bears fan and I will boo any Bears player who sucks. It's my way of providing incentive for the players to perform well. If they want me to cheer when they do something well, they better not complain when I boo when they fuck things up.

Well put Jeff. I'd agree with what some others have mentioned in other posts, that Rex has exactly 2 quarters on Monday night to right the ship.

If he throws 2+ INTs before halftime, he's getting yanked. A Jets-like performance would be fine, a Giants-like performance would be better.

Mariotti's column is pretty good, this quote is all off though -- "But quarterbacks? Can't get it right. Never have, never will."

What about Sid Luckman? The most lopsided victory in the history of the game? Maybe that's rolling the clock back too far...

Great post Jeff,

I support Rex 100%, but for goodness sakes Rex please park the Ferrari in the garage monday night and take out the minivan.

Jeff, very well put.
Just play smart and sound. Get first downs, calm down in the pocket, deep breaths in through your nose, out through your mouth. Imagine and feel the ball in your hands. Picture it arriving at the right destination. Let it float there as it extends from your own arm.
Calm Rex, Calm.
We need a collective and calming deep breath right before the game.

Megan, sounds like you are hip to the Zen thing...

Don't know if we should tell him to "extend his arm" though, he might get called for a penalty. I understand that is illegal now.

Dear Lovie,
I don't think you know about this website because you have not done as we have asked. We know what the score is and you should have been listening.
We've been through shit head coach after shit head coach fucking things up and letting one person drown the team. We want you to lead us to this Super Bowl and the next fourteen Super Bowls.
Start this week. Kick Ron Turner in his ass or give play calling duties to someone else. Start Cedric Benson and get him thirty carries. And, by God, if Rex still is lost early in this game then you replace him.
Don't fuck this up. This is our year. Shit can this year then say goodbye to an extension and maybe your job.
Good Luck, I know you will do what is right for this team.

OK, so Tuesday morning the consensus will be ' just give him a little more time, everything will turn around, it was not as bad as last time'.
DAMN IT, do you folks even read your own comments from yesterday?

I love my Bears and do not give a shit about Rex's feelings, this is about the team. The players are showing exceptional professionalism in not criticizing, ain't our Bears just the greatest?

Give our defense and special team, the best in the league, a break. What the hell is so bad about a first down once in awhile as opposed to a Rex bomb ending in the inevitable pick?

C'mon folks; get real.

Go Bears, I am with you and will always be; but DAMN the pieces are there, in place and you able and ready to grab the ring!

Here are the relevant stat lines from the Rams' last game:

Leinart: 15-24-186, 1 TD, 0 INT

James: 26-115, 0TD

Shipp: 7-21, 3 TD

That's all we need. Zen, baby, Zen.

I truly beleive in Rex and in time he will be known as T-Rex and will devour every team that comes in his way. Rex is our QB and we have to give him all our support and cheer him on and the BEARS will be what we all want them to be. T-Rex and the Monsters will prevail.

Perhaps this is Lovey's greatest coaching move. By telling everyone "I know this guy sucks, but I'm sticking with him", he is using the outcry from the fans and media to galvanize the players to unify.

What greater motivator is there than for the world to be against you?

A Peanut quote:

"If I was someone from out of town like a tourist from Canada or overseas and I read today's papers I would be like, 'Wow, the Bears lost yesterday,"'

They love each other, man. It is a beautiful thing.

Go ahead guys -- ride our collective disgust to the Super Bowl.

Sniff...what happened to my column. Spend 30 minutes writing about Rex Orton and nothing.

Oh and it is officially time to bench Rex. Sure was nice thinking we had a QB for a change huh? Oh well.

I've been a Bears fan all my life. And I'm kinda old now, so that's for a LONG time. For the love of God, please start Griese (or however you spell his name). As calmly, 'zen'ific, and reasonable as I can sound, please start #14.
As a young kid I learned if you pet the sick dog 9 times and the sick dog bites you 9 times, then don't be stupid enough to think you won't get bit that 10th time. Rex, you are a sick dog. And I refuse to get bit. Wait till next season, buddy.

This is one more week for Griese to practice before the playoff start. Run TJ and Ced. And call it a week. Our Defesnse will win and score points. Griese only has to get field goals.
