Romo: A Football Story

Sunday, January 7, 2007 | Jeff

He hit like a tsunami on the shores of Football America. It didn't matter what day of the week or what time of the day, if you turned on the television you'd find Bob Costas interviewing Tony Romo. CNN at noon - Costas and Romo. Cinemax at 2:30 AM - Costas and Romo. NBC actually started a new network called TRNBC which became an immediate hit with its motto, "Like Other Channels, Except Nothing but Tony Romo."

His first five games were undeniably brilliant. The movie version might use montage. Cut: Romo throws a touchdown pass. Cut: Romo on the cover of Time. Cut: Romo runs for a first down. Cut: Romo doing lines of coke off Jessica Simpson's chest. Suddenly he's in the Pro Bowl though one need look no further than our hallowed Halas Hall to understand the new sports mantra, "Never judge a quarterback after five games."

The passer rating dropped faster than my standards after midnight and the interceptions started to creep up on the touchdowns. He was awful against New Orleans. He was a disaster against Detroit. Suddenly America's Team leader had an eery similarity to the leader of America: suspect decision making, lack of discernable plan in battle. For as good as he looked in those first five games, that's how lost he looked down the stretch. But the Cowboys and their fans held out hope that #9 would become a playoff hero like 12 and 8 had before.

Then the hold. The movie version might use slow motion and glorious John Williams score. The ball snapped perfectly from center into Romo's hands. It slides away. The man picks it up and in a last gasp runs for the endzone, knowing in his heart he hasn't a prayer. Bergman might cut to a man in a black bursting a bubble with a pin. It was over. The Cowboys and their GQ quarterback were going home.

And they just played the final notes of the national anthem on TRNBC. Let Tony's story be a reminder about this game we love so much. For every Rudy, there's a Romo.

Not sure if it was intentional but reading 'Romo A Football Story' made me think about Rex. Can he be 'Good Rex' for three games?

No. Not even 1.

the problem with having the bye is that the team you play has just beaten a decent team.

the seahawks looked decent last night, gelling towards the end. if they're getting another CB or two back next week they'll be a little tougher. it will still come back to the turnover battle. the cowboys lost last night bc of a safety off of a fumble (2 points + short field for a TD), another fumble by witten and of course the botched hold by romo (not a turnover but close enough).

if the bears turn it over two times or less they will win. that works well with this team bc they should be able to run on the seahawks. the bears should pass not more than 20 times, not only to reduce the dependence on rex but to keep the ball and gain yards! this is still a running team, and i wish turner would understand that. yes they've run the ball more than anyone in the NFC than atlanta, but that's bc there were so many blowouts where they were running out the clock. run the ball when the game is CLOSE. then go with the medium routes to keep them honest, only go deep when there's one on one.

if they can pull that off, they will win.

i'd still rather face the giants.

I truly believe if Rex plays well, the Bears are going to beat up either of these teams. Because of their receivers, Dallas worried me a bit. The team has only lost three games, should have lost four, and Rex threw 13 interceptions in those 4 games. The game is on Coin Flip.

Great line Jeff: 'For every Rudy, there' a Romo.'!!!

I rootin right now for Philly for selfish reasons (I've been giving the Gothams fans I know a sack of $hit ever since we played them on MNF).

Seems like post season keys are running the ball and staying ture to just that. I trust our O line is resting and getting ready for battle- cuz we all know there are no more "we'll get em next weeks".

Bring on the Seacocks! I pray that Ron has been showing our defense game film from the last three weeks. We can't afford to play that kind of defense and win against Alexander.

Informal poll:

What's everyone's opinion of this whole brouhaha with Grossman admitting his head wasn't in the game against the Packers? Every sports analyst, announcer, etc... makes it sound like he backed up and pooped on Canton. I've watched enough football to know when I see a player's head isn't in the game, I've just never heard one admit it.

This whole saga, and I mean the whole season, is really taking on a life of its own, in a fucked up way.

I honestly have no idea what to expect next Sunday. The fan in me wants to believe that the last three weeks were treated like preseason games and we'll come out and do the same to Seattle that we did to the Packers in week one. The realist in me is ready for Blood Diamond 2.

sorry about that

jdawd, I believe that Rex has now stepped on it so badly that his team does/can not believe in him. Even if we get the mother load there will always be a smirch upon him.
Damn it!

As inconsistent as the Seahawks looked all year and not that 'good' when they played well, they did not look exactly 'good' yesterday. If Ron does not tell Rex to throw the 80 yarder every first down and Rex resists the urge even when not told to, we should be fine.

Believe it or not my concern isn't with Rex. The Seahawks have a former elk-hunting guide in the secondary (I guess Moose should be concerned). I think a lot of the players knew they weren't ready and Grossman opened his pie-hole and took one right up the pooper for the whole team. Moose even made some sort of "steel in his veins" comment.

No, my concern is the D. If I'm not mistaken the Seahawks have a lot more talent on O than the Packers, Lions and Tampa Bay have. That's why I said I hope these last three games were treated like preseason games. Of course Lovie is going to say they weren't, but Lovie could give a rat's ass about being straight with the media when it comes to his team. I don't think the media realizes that, where Lovie's from "we'll go from there," translates into, "go fuck yourself," which is fine by me.

Its going to be a long week.

The matter of the 'D' is very dependent on the 'O'. I firmy believe that 'our' problems with the 'D' have been related to our 'O' deficiencies. Have we as a team so much overused our 'D' that it is beyond the point of no return? I hope not not but there is that point, whether we want to admit it or not.
The S'Hawks 'O' did not impress me yesterday, it was actually mediocre against a mediorce defense.
Can we get up and stay up. Maybe some sort of sports 'Viagra' is what we need.
Bear Up!

Great take on Tony Romo. I guess the speed of the fall is directly related to the speed of the climb. I concur with Jerry's concern that Rex may have some similar qualities (although I think we have already witnessed at least one climb/fall cycle with Rex and I pray that we see another climb). I do feel very bad for Romo because I think he's a good kid with good skills and he'll be fine. The sad thing is that, even with the Week Four win over the 'Hawks, they were my least favorite choice of the possible opponent for the Bears next weekend. I found myself pulling for the Giants to upset the Eagles. The Giants would have made for a more comfortable week this week leading up to the game.

Lordy Lord, what drama with the man in black thing.. you CRACK me UP!!! Excellent visual, my friend!
I can't add any clever quips to aid us through this week. I'm hoping that Midway or DS can.
As far as what I think about the Rex "coming out" about his mindset? hmm.
I can't believe that a Chicago Bear would feel that way about a Packer game. But maybe that's just me.
I think that I would have rather heard that Rex was "coming-out", let's start the parade and get Matthew McConaughy here with the bongos, minus clothing and that six-pack set of abs. That's really for my benefit.
I hope that:
1. Rex understands that he is in the play-offs now and his head sure as sh*t better be right where it needs to be.
2. the temperature drops a little more so that we all feel like it's play-off season in Soldier Field.
3. TO can help out poor little Romo in the off-season so that we can really hear TONS about it all pre-season. "They went fishing together...they climbed Mt. Everest...They've cured cancer!" Cuz I don't know about you guys, but golly, I can't get enough of those TO stories.
4. The Bears can hang on and make it to the Super Bowl.
Like Cpt. Tenile says in MXC..
"Get it on!"

Romo never had a 1.3 game, did he? He never had a 0.0 game either, did he? He would be the best bear if they could sign him.

Romo (as well as Little Manning etc.) should just be tossed onto the pile of playoff "also rans". It's time now to scrap all the other games and endless what-if's. There is only one game on this weekend and its the Bears v Birds.

Come on now... everyone bull your neck and repeat after me "beat the brids... BEAT THE BIRDS... "

I'm looking to coaching as the x factor in this game. I feel like Turner really cleaned things up in the critical 3 game stretch at the end of the season (the winning stretch, not the meaningless Packer game) when he was both more creative and safer, used screens, Des Clark, fullback, and rollouts to minimize Rex's ambitions and therefore mistakes. Minimizing the negatives on offense is all the team needs; special teams and defensive dominance will do the rest. And there will be defensive dominance - as long as the people who are scheduled to be back are back and playing close to 100%. With Vasher and Tillman lining up, getting Chris Harris off the field (that is supposed to happen, right?) and going to our standard nickel package, the defense will have their best game in a long time. Maynard will be pinning them back when our more conservative field position game plan falters on 3rd down, and the safety the 'Hags gave up on Saturday will turn into the defensive score it should have been. Hasselback threw 2 picks in that game - he should be good for at least that many against the Bears. As long as we don't give those picks back, it's over - Bears win. I appreciate the 12 o'clock start - it should feel more comfortable to the guys than a night start. Rex can just pretend it's the beginning of the season again when he was the star on a rise, #1 with a bullet. And when we win this one, momentum will be ours - NFC Championship Game at Soldier Field!

I do not feel the least bit sad for Romo, he gladly jumped in the sack with TO and now it is wake-up on the morning after. Now that is sick.
