Super Bowl Diary I: What This Means

Monday, January 29, 2007 | Jeff

I have to wake up today and be a human being. Same for tomorrow. It isn't possible, I know, but I don't have a choice. At the end of this week they're going to play the Super Bowl. This time, THEY includes the Chicago Bears. Gabe Reid and the 2006 Chicago Bears.

I've changed a lot in my life and experienced quite a bit in a short amount of time. I've learned things don't always go your way. Sometimes parents don't stay married. Sometimes girlfriends don't stay faithful. Sometimes dream jobs can't find funding. Sometimes a harmless Tuesday morning in September can change your neighborhood and life forever.

But to paraphrase James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams, "The one constant through all the years has been...the Chicago Bears." No matter what was happening in my life, the Bears were going to play football and I was going to watch them do it. They have marked the time like road signs along the New Jersey Turnpike. The jerseys I've worn don't just say 45, 9, 87, 97, 54. They remind me of where I've been and what I used to be.

For three hours a week, these Bears have been my life. All the losses. All the heartbreak. All the Wannstedt. All of it can be erased like my police record when I turned 18. On Sunday, they're going to play the Super Bowl. This time, THEY includes the Chicago Bears.

DaBearsBlog in the Press Report: Alex Goldfayn writes about us in today's Tribune. Even our devoted reader Coxy gets a mention.

That's funny that I got quoted in the article. I will print this out and put it on my fridge.

I am just a little disappointed they chose that quote and not one of the ones where we verbally dominated Pack Is Back.

My FAVORITE blog, by FAR!!
Thanks to all you fellow Bear fanatics, for keeping my blood blue-and-orange while waiting for another game... and the next one is THE game.. that I have been waiting for since January of 1986 (when, BTW, the electricity went off in our subdivision just after the opening kickoff... you could hear the screams of outrage emanating from every house -- but that's another story).

Thanks to Jeff and Noah for putting this most accomodating site together, and letting us speak freely (even PIB, although his is more of a squeal).

GO BEARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet another Sheeesh to the fact that Jeff was only 2 when he saw the Super Bowl Shuffle for the first time...
Let me put my teeth back in.. sonny, hand me my shawl.. you young whippersnapper!

Well, I wouldn't really. Although, if there was a chance I was taking care of a of nere-do-well that we all know and don't really speak of or to, I'd make him suffer, just a little bit. What an ultra-maroon..

#28, hey Dan Grossman, did you know your full of shit cuz you really were a Colts fan most of your life. If your going to pretend to be someone get your facts right at least.

Henry, the Colts are inferior, we just beat a team with a better offense than the Colts 39-14. Also our defense and special teams are much better than yours. You have no hope my "delusional" friend.

First time to your blog. It's great! I grew up near Chicago but live near Houston TX now. He keeps bringing up the fact that the '85 Bears would've lost to the 90's Cowboys team. Yeah. Okay. Whateva. As I mentioned, my bf is a die-hard Cowboys fan. I take a perverse pleasure in the fact that a little corner of Cowboy Country is rooting for the Bears. Big Sandy, Texas, Lovie's hometown, looks more like a small town near Chicago instead of a town just east of Dallas. Bears signs everywhere and all anyone is talking about are the Bears. A friend of ours who lives near there says everyone has gone completely crazy over the Bears. It's cool but funny. I wonder who Big Sandy would've rooted for had it been the Bears and Dallas for the NFC championship (what I was hoping for, but alas).

They of course won't know ( it was Jim Harbaugh) because they are all riding Manning.
As for this blog, well I cannot say anything that hasn't been said before. I was the same age as Jeff the last time the Bears were in the big game (Jim McMahon was my first crush) and reading this entry about sums up my life since then...and I still have a thing for qb's.

Jeff, I also find it kind of interesting that you being a supposed lifelong Bear fan and you started this blog two years ago that you just now started to post this year.

Why is that? Is it because you really are one of those people who jumps on the bandwagon when they started winning?

Or, is because you couldn't find a collection of drunks and queers any other place then in Chicago?

I find it very fucking gay that you would become a fan of the Bears just because you remember some fucked up shuffle.

Hmmm.....

Let's get this straight....

Colts were a better team.

Hmmm total offense:

New Orleans 1st
Indy 3rd

Total defense:

New Orleans 11
Indy 21st

Indy also had the worst run defense in the history of football.

Care to explain?

I'll explain to you Chad. The Saints play in the NFC. The NFC is obviously inferior to the AFC. (Hence the domination of the AFC.) Any average team could put up great numbers against bad teams. The colts actually had some competition this year. That explains the rankings.

#28 Dave said . . .
Jeff, P.O.ed, jdawg, MidwayMonster, you all suck, You are so full of crap.

Not only will the "Big Bad Bears" lose, they're going to get killed.

Look at it from a pure football stand point. You have a inconsistent QB. Your defense is really looking weak up the middle, and Lovie will panic when they fall behind and put Rex in position where he needs to win the game, and that's were you will lose.

N.O. is going to have a big running day against your worn out defense. Turdwhacker was getting pushed all over the field in the Seattle game and believe that will carryover to this game making the middle the place to go.

Alexander ran pretty easy up the gut, and Seattle doesn't have as good a line as N.O..

Mark my words, Duece and Bush will have a big game.

I still say 41-10 Saints

Anyone notice how defensive the Colts fans are starting to get? I think they're starting to look at some stats and hence are getting worried. And they should be cuz the Bears are going to win no matter how superior you think the AFC is. Wont it be nice to have the trophy back in the NFC where they play tough-guy football.

People shouldn't bother to post if they have nothing constructive or intelligent to say, wouldn't you agree?
It was interesting to hear about Mike Singletary interviewing for the job in Dallas. I have to admit, that it made me nervous the second I heard about Parcell leaving Dallas. I thought of Lovie right away, his low salary, his contract being up.
I think Singletary would have a tough time dealing with Jerry Jones (did I get his name right?) He seems like such a in your face hands on do it my way or the highway kind of owner. Parcell could handle that probably better then most, I don't know about a brand new head coach. What do you guys think?

Don't know why you're SOOOOO Proud of that win over NO. They wouldn't have even made the playoffs if they were in the AFC. Their record against AFC teams this year was 1-3. They beat Cleveland,(applause) that's it.

During the course of the entire year they only beat two teams that finished above .500.

All of their great offensive stats were accumulated at the expense of weak NFC teams.

da bears have not really been tested yet.

The Colts, on the other hand, are the most battle-tested team in the league, bar none.

I also heard Norv Turner has it locked up but they did a bit on Sportscenter last night involving Singletary. I dont think Singletary would be a good coach, not yet anyway, I dont think he's even been a coordinator yet, isnt he just a linebackers coach? Thats a big jump and I think he would fail.....he might eventually be a good coach but JJ isnt about to give Singletary 5 years to get to the SB, he wants to win now.

Nicole made me think that I too would love to celebrate Monday in Chicago but of course that cant happen being a few states away, (and having to work since the dumb bitch that is in this office with me already has that week off, Just to spite me I think cuz she knew the Bears were in the SB). CHICAGO (AP)-- Chicago Bears football practice was delayed nearly two hours today after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Head coach Lovie Smith immediately suspended practice while police and federal investigators were called to investigate. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance unknown to the players was the goal line. Practice resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again...

AHHH.....Feels good to shed the so called "tenderness" as the district dubbed it.

To Colt, Its not the Bears fault they havent been tested and that they play in the NFC. I'm glad you think your team is battle tested too, Peyton Mannings numbers in the playoffs make Rexy look like Joe Montana.

Colt, why won't Marvin or Peyton or Reggie speak to the media? What are they trying to hide?

District Selectman,

They aren't trying to hide anything. Marvin and Reggie are just low key guys who don't enjoy a lot of media attention. (Marvin is more shy than Reggie.) As for Peyton, he is focusing on the SB. He is picking apart the Bears defense as we speak.

Jeff,

You are right. They did score the same amount of points, but were they scored against good defenses? And lets not forget that was a joke.

Do you remember the Cardinal game? I'll recap it for you. Down by a point at the end, Matt Leinart, in his second varsity start, drives the Cardinals from their own 38 to the Bear 23, using three and four wides. The Bears can't get to him. They don't know whether to (bleep) or wind their watch? They try pressure, no pressure, coverages, nickel packages, dime, you name it. Damn, the Cards are going to pull it off. On second and two on the Chicago 23, Dennis Green calls it off. He orders two tight ends and two running backs. Edgerrin James has been popping off about not being allowed to finish a game, and this has upset the coach. So with everyone crammed into the VW, James finishes the game by gaining a yard, the Cardinals miss the field goal, and Green throws his tantrum ... then fires his offensive coordinator, who wanted to keep throwing. Oh yes, Peyton will study this game.

Colt, I didnt even read your post except the first line or two something about Arizona. You have Peyton study that game and you will lose....just like Arizona did. And dont be a pussy, come post on the newest blog page.

Hey Colt,

The Bears are busy studying your great game against the Jags. how many yards did they run for? 10,000? I don't remember, but it was a big number.
