There's something about this kid Grossman. I went back and looked at all the Rex-related headlines of the season, from eREXion to the District's brilliant A kick in the Rexticles. There were calls to unleash him (Turn Him Loose) and calls to shut him down (Turn Him Off). All in all, Rex is who we thought he was: a work in progess - ever talented and always unpredictable. Still there's something...
On Sunday the whole world is going to sit in front of their television sets and wait for him to fuck up. He knows that. He knows the "story" will be his failure. But what if Rex Grossman reverts back to warm weather Rex and plays like the MVP of the first half of the season?
If Grossman is who I think he is, he realizes that Sunday isn't just an opportunity to earn the respect of Chicago and the nation. Sunday isn't just an opportunity to make himself millions of dollars. Sunday isn't just an opportunity to win Super Bowl Piccolo. No.
Sunday is an opportunity for immortality, a chance to be an NFL Films documentary and have Stevel Sabol in his life. There isn't any pressure to be great when no one expects greatness. It is surprise that breeds sports legend. Ask the 1980 U.S. Men's Hockey Team. Ask Buster Douglas. No one's given him a chance on Sunday. After all how can he compare to the great and all-powerful Oz - calling his wacky plays from the line of scrimmage? He can't. But I'm telling you...there's something about this kid Grossman.
I expect greatness. How about you?
#2 Megan said . . .I give him a chance on Sunday. I also give the rest of the team a chance too. Da Bears will work like a well-oiled machine on Sunday, in perfect harmony bringing home the hardware. #3 T.C. said . . .I am pretty sure Rex sees the big pitcure. I like the 1980 US Mens Hockey Team reference for several reasons.
-The US Hockey team became teammates and respected each other's talents-- as do The Bears
-The US Team's coach knew the game, had a plan and trained them to play like their nemisises (nemisi?) the Soviets and stuck by the players. Lovie, believes in every single player on that team, especially Rex and defends/supports all of them.
-The US team did listen to the critics, only enough to give themselves the Chutzpah needed to put them over the edge to win. I think the Bears have Chutzpah coming out their a**.
There's more, I know. But I think that covers it from my perspective. Don't ask me why I used Chutzpah, it seems to fit.

#12 Colt said . . .Do you remember the Cardinal game? I'll recap it for you. Down by a point at the end, Matt Leinart, in his second varsity start, drives the Cardinals from their own 38 to the Bear 23, using three and four wides. The Bears can't get to him. They don't know whether to (bleep) or wind their watch? They try pressure, no pressure, coverages, nickel packages, dime, you name it. Damn, the Cards are going to pull it off. On second and two on the Chicago 23, Dennis Green calls it off. He orders two tight ends and two running backs. Edgerrin James has been popping off about not being allowed to finish a game, and this has upset the coach. So with everyone crammed into the VW, James finishes the game by gaining a yard, the Cardinals miss the field goal, and Green throws his tantrum ... then fires his offensive coordinator, who wanted to keep throwing. Oh yes, Peyton will study this game.

They did everything they needed to do. The Colts struggled down the stretch against the likes of Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Houston. Those losses made their road a lot tougher -- including the wear and tear of an extra game. Their luck will run out on Sunday.

Yet -- and please correct me if I'm wrong -- he has never gotten pissy or desperate or Terrell Owens (sorry, redundant). Not when he was sitting home on IR watching TV, not after the Miami game, not after the Packers game. And from all reports, he's doing the same at the Media Day.
Rex's balls are definitive proof that god does not exist, because how could god create something bigger and more powerful than himself?

Through all of the adversities that he's been through, Rex Grossman has managed to step up and make big plays. After 20 or so years and almost as many quarterbacks, Rex has thrown this team into the Superbowl.
yes, I understand that he's inconsistent, has 2 left feet, and needs to retake fundamentals 101.
Still, I have a difficult time trying to empathize with all the Rex bashers out there. I beginning to believe it's just ignorance and pure stupidity on their part that blinds them from the clear and obvious truth....
Rex Grossman is a Champion.

#26 Nicole living in hell (blue city) cannot wait to come home to Orange said . . .Some Rex quotes from today:
"I would love to play more consistent, so they know what to expect, so everyone knows what to expect,'' said Grossman, looking ever so casual wearing a backwards-turned Bears baseball cap, khaki shorts, gray pullover, and orange Nike's with no socks. "I know I can do that.
"In my first full season, I've had about 12 games including the playoffs that I'm real proud of, and about five or six that I'm not really proud of at all. They were bad. I need to work on those six games, but I'm happy where I'm at. I'm at the Super Bowl. I've had 12 great games, and I still feel like I've had a great season.''
"Lovie's a great guy and he's got a lot of confidence in me. That didn't waver because fans booed, or the media wrote whatever they wanted to write. I'm just thankful that I'm playing for a coach with strong character in what he believes in. Even if you may not be playing up to your best, he knows eventually you're going to snap out of it and be a great quarterback, and that's what he's told me all year.''
In other words, "Media: go fuck yourselves."

#28 District Selectman said . . .Colt - a little math lesson: the Colt run defense statistics in the playoffs was 3.61 yards per carry (on an average of only 20 carries per game.) Considering only the division and championship games and it goes up to 4.00 yards per carry.
Dream on if you think the Bears are only going to rush 20 times. The Bears averaged4.00 yards per carry in their two playoff games and it will take a HUGE commitment on the Colts part to hold them that "low". I'm thinking the Bears will run 30-35 times and total at least 150 yards.
Will that translate to victory? No way to tell - but I like their chances.

#29 Nicole living in hell (blue city) cannot wait to come home to Orange said . . .And from Briggsy:
Briggs offered the slightest ray of hope to Bears fans Tuesday at the team's Super Bowl XLI Media Day, allowing that he might be open to giving Chicago a hometown discount. Emphasis on the word, "might.''
"They might [get a discount],'' said Briggs. "Sometimes you sacrifice some dough to win championships. I've never been on a team like this before, where the players were so close with each other. If I were to leave Chicago, I don't see a [new] team being this close."
Right now I'm not the least bit concerned with Briggs's future. The part I like is that these guys are closer than any other team.

Great banter going, and it sure is amusing how the opposing names change but the gist remains the same. Personally, I liked the Seahawks fans - they were by far the most civil and reasonable. Colt, do you realize that we are about to witness a matchup that works out just like the Saints championship game? Tell me what the difference is? Great offense (Colts) against great defense (Bears). Let's see, what happened the last time such a matchup occurred? About 14 points for a formerly ballyhooed offense, and a lot of crying. And losing. And I seem to recall that NO's running game was just a little better than the Glue Factory's. And I seem to recall that NO's defense was considered significantly better than Mr. Ed's Sons. (okay I'm reaching here, don't need Chad to let me know those weren't real good). Speaking of crying, did you see the great Buddy Ryan quote about Peyton vs. the Ravens? Something along the lines of "It's a lot harder to throw when you have tears in your eyes..." He was advocating blitzing as a strategy against Manning, which I'm not sure will be the Bears strategy, but I loved the quote. Yes, Peyton is going to have tears in his eyes on Sunday. Rex Grossman may not be the greatest winning Super Bowl quarterback of all time, but come Sunday, he WILL be the only Super Bowl winning quarterback on the field. Then everyone else can talk about how bad Rex was and how the Bears won in spite of him and meanwhile, he'll just move on to next year when the Bears are going to be even better - is it too early to talk about Back to Back? I think not. BTW, don't read Mariotti today unless you want to puke. What a putz. GO BEARS!

Anyway - it's funny how that one game is brought up. I don't have time ot look up how many games we've played by then - but if the Cardinals exposed some great weakness, wouldn't you think EVERY team woudl have follwed that "recipe" - especially in the playoffs? Wouldn't we have lost by now?
The game was just was I thought it was - just one game out of 16. We learned from it and moved on. I doubt the Colts will be dumb enough to try and game plan based on a game that was played months ago.
That logic is for people like Colt and Dr. Z.

#55 Nicole living in hell (blue city) cannot wait to come home to Orange said . . .Well Colt I have to sharply disagree. "Your defense is nothing compared to the Ravens" You lost me there, and not just a little bit. The Bears full strength were the best defense in the league Ravens included. The current Bears have to be considered right there with the Ravens. I suspect you are falling into the whole "AFC's Better than NFC" mantra that legions of hypnotized Americans are repeating over and over again in their justification of why the Guses (should that be Gusi?) are favored and will win. It is true, the AFC was better than the NFC, on the whole. Unfortunately for you, we're not averaging the leagues to determine a Tecmo Bowl virtual champion. The Bears are the best team in the league, even without their two injured Pro Bowlers. They just happen to reside in the NFC. If you didn't like the Ravens D (and we know you didn't), you're going to HATE the Bears D. Oh, and if you didn't like the Patriots special teams, you're going to HATE the Bears special teams. And just to finish the thought symmetrically, if you loved the Ravens pathetic O, you're unfortunately going to HATE the Bears game-controlling and Peyton-minimizing O. Yes, the Colts have a better passing game than the Saints, but they weren't nearly as balanced. And yet that's their strength! Uh oh, doesnt look too good when you look at it that way does it? Just keep on repeating it to yourself... "AFC better than NFC...AFC better than NFC... AFC better than NFC..." Fade to black...

It's too bad - I though COLT was a fan who knew what he/she was talking about. But all COLT has done is copy other web postings and spout off claims that can't be backed up. Again - like so many national columnists, the perception that the team with the better QB will win the game.
Now again, I will always say this until the game is over. It may well be that Manning will pick apart the Bear's defense and the Colts will win the game handily. MAY well be. It is also possible that Rex will have a good game against an average at best defense, the running game will help control the clock, the special teams will provide field position and points, and the defense will be just tough enough to hold the Colts offense below average.
In other words, a TEAM has a better chance of winning the Super Bowl than one player does.
It's only Tuesday. I hope the media keeps this up - Manning vs Grossman, because it will make the Colts feel superior. But I have a feeling in the boredom someone will get smart and remember how the game of football is actually played and suddenly realize the Bears actually did a pretty good job of playing it as a TEAM this year.

Natty: n. A blend of barley and hops, commonly referred to as beer and sold under the name Natural Ice. Most often seen in or around the homes of college age males.
Natty Cube: n. A box of Natural Ice in which 12 cans are on the bottom and 12 on top thus taking on a cube like shape. (I might be wrong on the exact dimensions there)If I happen to be completly wrong, please correct me, I enjoy learning new things
I don't know what Powers is exactly as I have no frame reference when it was used but when I was in school we used "powers" to refer to any amount of time in which we took a shot of beer per minute. #87 Nicole living in hell (blue city) cannot wait to come home to Orange said . . .Nicole, none of the above. I went to good ol' Ball State. People make fun of it until I ask if THEIR punter is in the Superbowl but that's neither here nor there.
Since you are Boilermaker you will find this very funny. On indiana.edu, Jeffrey Graf of the reference department of the Indiana University Libraries says that Southerners used to use the term Hoosier ''to denote a rustic, a bumpkin, a countryman, a roughneck, a hick or an awkward, uncouth or unskilled fellow.''
And I vote for as much Bears flare as you can possibly fit on your body.

Chad, you talk about boring? Whats more boring then rubbing each others ass, talking about the Bears.

#111 Mike said . . .Dave what are you talking about?
A. You're right, I don't care about atheltes as people anymore than they care about me. I only care if they show up and play well and they only care if people like me buy tickets and jerseys. You think Tank Johnson cares if I get in trouble? No. And Tom Brady doensn't give a shit about you!
B. Look, I love to talk shit. Let's talk some shit. But for you to trot out some weak ass take about the intellect of a man that runs into other men at full speed in order to knock them down, well, that's where you lose me.
I'm sure that if you found out that Andre Tippett (a Jew, btw, MAZEL!) was illiterate, like you would care? No.
Bring on something real.
The problem here is that you can't root for the Colts. You're a Pats fan. So you are trying so hard to talk some shit but you don't believe a word of you.

#130 Bill said . . .Chad, you terminal fucking idiot. As I mentioned in a earlier post, I said the Bears would probably win.
I don't play this AFC-NFC shit. I may be a Pats fan, but more so a football fan. I can seperate myself from anyone team and appreciate good football.
Unlike you who has his lips wrapped around Lovies dick so tight are unable to do so.
Having played football and currently coaching it, I see how games are won and lost. Many times it doesn't matter who is the most talented.
Intelligence level on the team is often the x factor in winning. Unless of coarse you play in a weak division like Chicago where talent will usually prevail.
But playing a team that has smart players with high personal standards will win 9 time out 10.
When I refer to a players intelligence, I mean in the context of the game. What he does in his personal life does have an impact on the team when it comes to his decision making.
If he makes poor decisions off the field, he is more likely to make poor decisions during the coarse of the game. He becomes a liability and not an asset.
Obviously he or any other player could give rats ass about you , I, or anybody else when it comes down to it.
January 31, 2007
#131 Chad said . . .Dave - I assume you're talking about Tank. I agree - and I expect him to be gone next year. But the Bears are a football team, not a social services group. They pay the man to play football, and if he's eligible to play, then they have a right to make him earn his money. Again, I expect him to be gone next year - but cutting him or leaving him home - while maybe better in the moral scheme of things - does not fit the immediate beneift of the Bears (or their fans).
January 31, 2007
#132 Chad said . . ."If he makes poor decisions off the field, he is more likely to make poor decisions during the coarse of the game. He becomes a liability and not an asset."
1. This is 100% untrue. If so, prove it. Donovan McNabb did terrible on the Wonderlic, is he a bad player?
2. For someone bemoaning intelligence, you should really try to spell better. It's not 'coarse', its 'course'.February 1, 2007
#133 Dave said . . .Dan Marino did terrible too.
February 1, 2007
#134 Chad said . . .Chad, it was Vince Young who scored bad. McNabb scored quite high.
I'll bet you would not score very high on that test. If you judge intelligence based on the wonderlic, you are a true fucking idiot.
Bill, I'm talking Tank, Manning (Ricky). Lovie went against his own belief when he allowed both chumps to keep playing.
I understand a championship doesn't come along that often, but to sacrifice your belief system is plain trash.
They must believe it them selves because Angelo himself had to come out and tell the press he wasn't prostituting the princples.
Well then, what do you call it?
Look at the Colts. You don't see that on that team. Dungy wouldn't stand for it and he sure as hell wouldn't allow him to play.
Oh yeah, Chad I see your mom misspelled your name on the birth certificate. Its supposed to be PUSSY.
February 1, 2007
#135 Bill said . . .No Dave. I looked it up. McNabb did terrible on the Wonderlic. So did Vince Young.
February 1, 2007
#136 jeff said . . .I personally disliked the fact they signed Ricky Manning also; but football is not a choir practice. I'm sure Lovie has been around people that violate his belief system all the time. He's in a profession that hires (to a large extent) very mean guys that take a certain pirde in physically dominating their opponent. Don't be naive - the Colt players I'm sure go to many of the same types of clubs and I suspect many of them own weapons also. No evidence -so flame me if it makes you feel good; but I'm saying (logically) it's likely.
As far as Angelo - yeah, he was "prostituting" his principles. Actually, he was looking at the overall picture of ALL his players and had to ask "do I risk wrecking this season for all the players that worked hard to make a point now." Idealism has a price - and the other players and the fans end up suffering. How many national media types woudl be praising the Bears if they cut Tank and lost to Seattle in the playoffs? None. They's jump on Grossman for being a bad QB and Lovie for being a bad playoff coach and totally forget the moral stance. That's just reality.
They are using Tank - plain and simple. It's a business, and Angelo was being a smart businessman. Tank was free to play legally, and so he's playing. Those that object shoudl take that indignation and funnel it productively by volunteering at a social services organization.
February 1, 2007
#137 Brin said . . .hey guys, i think the tank johnson "principles" issues is a good one and here's my opinion. this is a man paid to play football and the justice system does not dictate he should not be playing football. he injured no one. he harmed no one though he did put children in harm's way. do i think he's a good man? no. do i believe that if anything, coach smith's greatest asset might be the ability to help a troubled individual? absolutely. and i'm proud to have a coach who puts the safety of an individual ahead of x's and o's.
