The Halas Trophy Comes Home

Monday, January 22, 2007 | District Selectman

I'm breaking the posting hiatus for this one. I had to. Today the Bears declared loudly and angrily that they belong in the Super Bowl. Nobody outside of Chicago gave us a shot. (Okay, Rick Majerus, calling the Wisconsin-Illinois game picked the Bears, but he thought Ditka was still coaching.) Only the fans believed.

And could any fan have asked for a more balanced victory? A safety and four turnovers by the defense, and it could have easily been six. They made the vaunted Deuce McAllister disappear. Our quarterback didn't turn it over, despite widespread expectations that he would. Instead, he fought through early drops and incompletions to deliver unpasteurized, triple-creme leadership. It helps when you have playmakers like Bernard Berrian, and a punishing running game that has struck a lethal balance. Special teams also delivered today: Robbie Gould gave us a lead we never gave up, the coverage was excellent, and the Weapon didn't lay it on the ground. This most cohesive of teams delivered the most decisive victory of the playoffs just when everybody had counted them out. Can they win one more? I believe; do you?

I LOVE IT!!! I had rationalized that they COULD win, but wondered if they would. I thought the X-factors would be the weather, injuries (which the Saints could not afford), and Devin Hester.

Only the weather came through for us, but the DEFENSE took all those press clippings from the lamoid "prognosticators", and crammed up their respective anal openings.
Who knew? I know that Brian is a god, but Vasher played like his tail was on fire, and the D-line was all over Mr Cool Brees.

Can't wait for ESPN SportsCenter tonight.. and I am sure they will all apologize for their boneheaded predictions. Now.. if only Mr PIB had watched the game.. I am sure he took the points, right? HAH !

GO BEARS!!!

This game just felt right from the start. Really, the game was played wonderfully. If there were any point of constructive criticism, it would be a few disappointing drops from the receiving corps. Rex had a decent, safe day, but it could have been nicer and easier with better hands catching.

Still, all things considered, a fantastic game. This is the Bears team that I've grown to love -- a great game from start to finish.

On to Miami!!!!

I don't believe, I KNOW! We are the best TEAM in the NFL. We will win in Miami.

I'm in Los Angeles and Bears mania is taking over LA!! It's gotta be WONDERFUL to be in the Chi! Congrats to everyone. One more game, and I'd love to see the 1st Black head coach win the Ring while Urlacher gets a chance to get REVENGE on Brady.

Lovie Smith, on being the first black coach to make it to the Super Bowl:

"I'll feel even better to be the first black coach to hold up the world championship trophy."

Man, I just love the fact that he is smart enough to know to not name the trophy by its formal name, a name which is more a convenience of circumstance and a slight against a true founder of modern football, George Halas (who is incidentally the namesake of the trophy for the NFC conference champion). Lovie, you're a smart man. Bring these Bears a Super Bowl ring!!!!

I was feeling the same things you guys are last year. Enjoy the feeling. But, once the post game adrenalin wears off, do you really think you can beat either AFC team without a more balanced attack?

Except for one drive, Grossman could not bring any consistency to his passing game. That puts massive pressure on your defense and this time you won't be playing a team with no recent post-season experience at home.

I definitely think your best bet is to play the Colts. Tom Brady is scary in the big game. Good luck...

The silence from the trash talkers who haunt this site is deafening. Vindicatiion is ours, Bear fans. The team that has been the best of the NFC all season is heading to the Super Bowl and it feels damn good. I've been watching Rex interviews and he's laser-focused on one more victory. That's the mantra, my friends. One more.

damn i can't believe that we won...after all the talk going into this week about how we will get dirty worked by the saints. Now we finally get what we deserve, to play for a world championship. Way to go guys. The defense turned it up when they needed to do it the most. That safety was the most important play in the game. Bernard Berrian YOU ARE THE MAN...i am not washing my berrian jersey till after the super bowl. My dad got it for me before last weeks game and its only been worn twice. Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson deserve the team mvb though. Without the running game that drive that culminated with Berrian's catch wouldnt have been possible b/c the Saints had to put so many ppl in the box to stop the run.

Domination. The D-Line pressure that we all loved the first half of the season is back. Urlacher all over the field in coverage. Vasher - animal.

Thomas Jones' 7 (I think) consecutive runs for 65 yards was absolutely awesome. Then Sexy Rexy got some momentum going.

The way the D played has removed any doubt in my mind that the Bears SHOULD beat Indy. Get your bets in kids, the spread is 7.

Now that the Colts won, Lovie doesn't have to field questions about being the first black head coach to get to the Super Bowl. Now that is a moot point, and teams can recognize that black coaches are as good as white coaches, and we can all move on to more important things.

While I absolutely hate the state of Indiana and its idiotic highway construction signs (one line of the joke every ten miles of traffic), I do appreciate that Indy has good fans. I just hope we clobber them in Miami.

So much for the conventional wisdom, eh, ESPN????????

I am thrilled that Dungy won. I wanted a black head coach to win the Super Bowl, but I didn't want it all on Lovie's head. Now the media can chill: a black head coach will win the Super Bowl. At least our head coach doesn't have to answer every question on the topic.

Bears Wear is IN! I went to Aurora Sports Authority to get my Bears stuff. at 8 AM. The store was jammed. Some woman bought 18 hats @ $30 a piece. Grey tees look great($20) and blue sweatshirt($50) too steep for me. TRIBUNE and SUN-TIMES issues are tremendous.

Hey Dennis Green, I'm ready to 'crown your ass'.

One possible downer-Do you think the Cowboys will go after Lovie, now that Parcells has quit? The Bears don't pay anything and Lovie could triple his salary easily. I just don't see Phillips paying Lovie $4 million+. Maybe they'll let Lovie go after the Super Bowl, get some draft picks and then sign Chico Rivera. I hope it doesn't happen, but the McCaskeys are pretty tight with a buck.
