Why I'm Not Going to the Super Bowl

Friday, January 26, 2007 | Jeff

I've been asked about a hundred times in the last week, "When are you leaving for Miami?" I'm not. I'm not going. People seem to be having a hard time understanding how someone who puts extra Chicago Bears on his bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches could miss the chance to see his boys play in the biggest game of their lives.

The answer is simple: I have Josie Woods Pub. For seven years now I've sat in that little bar in the East Village and watched Chicago Bears football with my friends. I remember ringing the Bears bell as Alex Brown sacked Billy Volek in overtime to end the Titans game on a safety. I remember losing to Carolina and sadly walking up the stairs back to reality. I'll never forget pouring champagne from behind the bar last Sunday and passing it out to a sea of smiles.

If I were in Miami next Sunday and the Bears were to win, I'd miss Wayne, Noah, Brian, the Reverend, Stephanie, Vinny and the crew. I'd be on my cell phone for hours afterwards. No, I'm not going to Miami. I'm staying home. I've sung the fight song with these folks for seven years. Let's hope we sing it one more time this season.

We start breaking down the ballgame on Monday. For now I really want to know where everybody is watching the game, especially if there's something stupid you do...IF YOU'RE GOING TO A BAR IN A PARTICULAR AREA OF THE COUNTRY, LET ME KNOW. WE'LL COMPILE A LIST AND MAKE IT AVAILABLE FOR BEARS FANS NEXT WEEK.

I think I am more of a traditionalist, I will be going to a Super Bowl party like I do every year. I'm not much of a bar person on Super Bowl sundays. I would rather spend it with family and friends, like a holiday.

I am in unchartered waters where I cant afford to take a play off or run upstairs for a quick game of cards or run to quick refill my bowl with chicken chili. MY BEARS ARE IN THE SUPER BOWL FOR GODS SAKE!! I must be glued to the TV for every play! I am going to a smaller SB party this year where I know I will have a front row seat in front of a High-Def bigscreen and not so many people that I will get distracted. I have a lot of heart into this team this year and I cant wait for that surreal feeling when the clock runs out.

I'll be buying a new 42-inch plasma tv tonight or tomorrow. I'll be at home sitting with a few buddies in my bar in front of the tv staring like those 2 little kids on the the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner hour watching Wile E. Coyote explain the deliciousness of the road runner.

Beep beep zip bang!!!

I'm tempted to go check out this Josie Woods place and watch the game with some other Bears fans, but I'll be spending the day at home up here in West Harlem, with my girlfriend (a big Patriots fan) and two brothers (a Giants fan and a Lions fan). Two of them are rooting hard for the Bears, but the older brother (Giants fan) is married to a Colts fan, so he'll betray me I'm sure. We have a modest but very nice 27" LCD TV, and lots of good places to order food from.

The Midway likes to refer to himself as "the Midway". The Midway likes to refer to himself in the third person. I hope your house explodes from all the loyal Bears fans when they win the SB. Best of luck to all Bears fans and parties that are Bears intensive. And since we are now talking about TV details, I will be watching a 894 inch 1080p HD DLP tv for SB Sunday. Ok thats all true except for the 894 inches, its really only 56.

I've had SB parties the last 3 or 4 years. My friends come because its a party; They aren't interested in football but like to watch me jump up and yell or curse. This year I'm not so sure about a party. I told my girlfriend (who couldn't be less interested in sports) it may not be such a fun party if the Bears don't win. She asked if it would help if she roots for the Colts? She obviously couldn't hear the tea kettle going off in my head so I just told her no, that wouldn't help.

I guess I'll be having a party and my friends can see 3-plus hours of interpretive dance on my part.

I would love to go just for the spectacle of it but $3,000 a ticket and trying to get to Miami are just not justifiable. This last year I had a 50" plasma hung up on the wall in the living room and a 43" in the office/den. I think, like that commercial with the golf ball that everyone can see on TV but that the player can't see, reminds me that sometimes it's better to watch it on TV. Plus, you can pause it for a piss break if you have to and you can get a beer without going out on to the concourse and watching the game, yes, on TV while you wait for food and beer.

I'll be at my usual spot as I have all season; in front of a large projected screen at J&T's in Streamwood on Barrington Road with a rowdy bunch of die-hard Bears fans, quaffing pints of Guinness. Jake (the J of J&T) passes out the words to the fight song and everyone in the bar sings it every time the Bears score. At half time they have a free all you can eat buffet with a "theme" dish-coupla weeks ago had fried seahawk :) . There's a free raffle for Bears stuff after the game. Usually Mongo is there signing pics or whatever you ask him to and leading everyone in chants of "Green Bay? SUCKS!". Jimbo Covert was there a couple of weeks ago. It is like a slice of Bears heaven in the burbs.

It's becoming clearer all the time who the folks are who hold down the fort here - they're displaced Bears fans - New York, North Dakota, Texas, etc. I guess it makes sense, why would people in the Chicago area need this blog? Since I do not have any friends who are true Bear fans down here, I will be refusing all invitations to SB parties, nor making any invitations to come to my house. I've always found that my protocol at normal SB parties ends up being - get drunk and forget to watch football. No chance of that here. The game will be watched in the usual fashion, nothing fancy, standing most of the time in front of a 36" tube tv that does the trick when you're close to it. All immediate family members will attend (think I can even get the wife to watch this one) with screams and high fives for every good play and pounding the coffee table and yelling for every bad. Cell phone and regular phone will be nearby to call and receive calls from siblings in Chicago and California during the game (only during commercials though - no talking on phone during live game). I hope I'm not making a mistake in not going next door to watch it in hi-def DLP - I just don't want to give up autonomy and control over my surroundings. For you young whippersnappers (is that most of you?) I am here to sing the praises of watching the game with the best possible Bear fans - your kids that you've personally programmed. Nothing like it. Likely no drinking until it becomes clear that the game is ours (the first Weller didn't get poured in the last one until Lovie got doused). I know that cuts against the grain, it's unfortunately the wise thing to do in the extremely unlikely event anything bad happens. PO'd, you said it right, the surreal feeling will be on us all at the end and I want to remember and savor it.

I live in Connecticut, and am flying home to Morton Grove for the game. I'll host the same group of 10 or so high school friends at my parents' place like I did for the NFC title game last week, and hopefully it will go down the same way: having a few beers but staying sober during the game, going nuts in the fourth quarter, wandering from bar to bar in the snow afterwards.

BTW, every week I meant to come to Josie Woods' with you guys but every Sunday I couldn't make it into the city, or the Bears were on national TV which made my 50 inch DLP an option I couldn't refuse.

We're almost halfway there in terms of waiting....but next week will seem a lot worse than this one was.

For the third year, I'll be going to a party at a friend's house. They always set up some beer pong, and there's a pool table- none of which I will be taking part in. My friend- my only Bears fan friend who lives in SF- and I will be posted on the couch right in front, drowning our nerves in Power's, and wishing that everyone would shut up, sit down, and watch the f-ing game.

Kind of sounds like going to the real thing. Though I imagine there will be a large Bears contingent, I feel like sitting in a foreign stadium filled with disinterested fans would only make me wish for the intensity and tradition of Soldier. I'd rather go to a hostile stadium where the fans care. Just me?

Will watch the game at a modest party in front of 56" Plasma. Will likely pay more attention to the hotties in the room than the game. Except, of course near the end of each quarter when I need to check my place on the Superbowl Squares. Have talked to 15+ folks around the country this week to see who they're pulling for. Keep getting a shrug of the shoulders. I need a reason to pull for one or the other but haven't found a good one yet. Just hoping for a good game at this point.

Pat, I was at the Superdome in 1986 for my one and I'm sure, only, Super Bowl (and before now, the only one that counted). All I can tell you is it is a bizarre atmosphere - really bright lights, not huge sustained crowd noise, very surreal. Not at all like Soldier Field, obviously, and in the end you're better off where you are. If I could be at one game this season, it wouldn't be the Super Bowl where at least half the fans will be pulling for the Shoes, it would be at last week's Championship Game, which the more I watch it and think about it may go does as the greatest Bear fan- Bear watching game in history - the PERFECT GAME. The weather was so perfect, the crowd was perfect, watching Brees scramble around in his paint- and grass-stained jersey as he staggered his way to a pummeling (vs. Rex's so-clean-he-could-go-to-his-confirmation in it shirt), those guys laying in the end zone with the flakes pouring down, the water pour. If I could be at any game, any time, that's the game I wish I was at. But watching it TV was a sublime experience as well. As for the Super Bowl, watch it where you can devote every core of your being concentrated on the game, no distractions, just you and the game and people who care about it as much as you.

Midway should invite Mr. Natty to the party as well.

I myself have no clue where I will be watching the game. I am out at school and there are several problems.

1) none of my close friends out here are Bear fans. A bunch of them will be rooting for them, but they're not die hard

2) I have a month until my 21 birthday, so drinking at a bar is out.

3) while representing the bears everyday this week (and probably every day next week depending on my tshirt supply and laundry status) I have had alot of conversations with Bear fans, none though have anything solid to set up.

So i guess my point here is that I very well could be sitting in a room by myself drinking out of a cube of Natty, screaming at a small TV and posting on this blog continually. I know i shouldnt complain, but there are some negatives to being in Hawaii.

If you have seen this joke, please forgive, I thought it was funny...

A Packer fan, a Viking fan and a Bear fan were all in Saudi Arabia , sharing a smuggled crate of booze. All of a sudden the Saudi police rushed in and arrested them. The mere possession of alcohol is a severe offense in Saudi Arabia , so for the terrible crime of actually being caught consuming the booze, they were sentenced to death!
However, with the help of very good lawyers, they were able to successfully appeal their sentence down to life imprisonment. By a stroke of luck, it was a Saudi National holiday the day their trial finished, and the extremely benevolent Sheik decided they could be released after receiving just 20 lashes each of the whip. As they were preparing for their punishment, the Sheik suddenly said, "It's my first wife's birthday today, and she has asked me to allow each of you one wish before your whipping."
The Viking fan was first in line (he had drunk the least), so he thought about this for a while and then said, "Please tie a pillow to my back."
This was done, but the pillow only lasted 10 lashes before the whip went through. The Viking fan had to be carried away bleeding and crying with pain when the punishment was done.

The Packer fan was next up (he almost finished an entire fifth by himself), and after watching the scene, said "All Right! Please fix two pillows on my back. But even two pillows could only take 15 lashes before the whip went through again, sending the Packer fan out crying like a little girl.
The Bear fan was the last one up (he had finished off the crate), but before he could say anything, the Sheik turned to him and said, "You support the greatest team in the world, your team has some of the best and most loyal football fans in the world. For this, you may have two wishes!"

"Thanks, your most Royal highness," the Bear fan replies. "In recognition of your kindness, my first wish is that you give me not 20, but 100 lashes."
"Not only are you an honorable, handsome and powerful man, you are also very brave," the Sheik says with an admiring look on his face. "If 100 lashes is what you desire, then so be it. And your second wish? What is it to be?" the Sheik asks.
"Tie the Packer fan to my back."

The real reason none of you are going to Miami is because you know the outcome. Why waste the time and money to watch Rex flop in person.

You watch Rex will lay an egg the size of Megans, oh sorry, I can't say things like that on here no more. Damn.

Since we're telling lame, stupid, retarded jokes, here's one for all you retards.

Lovie and Dungy are standing at mid-field before kick off talking about whos players were the bravest and most loyal.

Lovie says, "Rex, come here." So Rex being the butt sucker he is, runs right over and says "yes coach. Lovie says, "climb up the diamond vision and jump off." So Rex does as he's told, climbs up and jumps. Lovie looks at Dungy and says, " now thats brave."

Dungy says, "thats nothing, watch this." So he calls Manning over. Manning walks over and says, "yeah." Dungy says, "climb up that diamond vision." So manning climbs on up. Dungy yells up and says, "now jump." Manning yells back, "fuck you." Dungy says, "now thats brave."

During the NFC Championship game I developed a bad case of restless leg syndrome. The Zen thing wasn't working for me that day. Highly doubtful if Zen will work next Sunday either.

I normally go to a party for the Super Bowl filled with people that probably watch that one game every year. It has worked in the years that I don't care who wins. I can't do that this year.

Sanchez and I are maybe going to get together to watch the game. He has a bigger TV than I do, but younger kids, so neither home is optimal. We also live in a town where the CBS affiliate is in a nasty battle with Mediacom the cable provider. CBS hasn't been seen by Mediacom subscribers in our town since the 5th or January. That means the bars will be packed to the top. If Sanchez can't score a HD receiver before next weekend, my guess we will be watching it at my house.

Why do you come here? I mean, if your answer is to talk smack then let me tell you, your smack is as fresh as a homeless man's underwear. You talk shit like a 6th grader. Your not funny or clever. I don't mind internet shit talk, I just don't like BAD internet shit talk.

But your a typical Chowd, never really grasping reality. And proving once again that Boston fans are truly the most annoying fans in sports.

I've been reading you guys all year, but haven't contributed yet. I just want to say thanks for all the funny and insightful posts. You've made a already memorable year that much better.

Jonathon: I may join you at Windy City. Are there decent TVs to watch it on?

I'm looking for a place to watch the game is Des Moines. If there was ever a town in need of a Bear Bar, it's DM. ....oh yeah, and Dave likes men.

Payton -- Windy City has a bunch of TVs, and one huge big-screen. I'm probably going to get there ridiculously early to catch good seats in front of the big-screen, but really there are a lot of good seats in the house. If you're able to make it, I'll be the guy with his wife and 2 little girls decked out in Bears gear! :)

I'll be at fellow Chicago-native's house watching the game on his 60" HDTV as we have the past two weeks. I spent the regular season at Bailey's Sports Bar with about 20 other rabid Bears fans, but no need to watch this game at a bar. Only downside is my wife's grandmother will be here and she's going to hear me curse like a sailor for the first time. Oh well, I can only keep up appearances for so long.

A great place for Bears fans in Dallas is Ben's Half-Yard House (7102 Greenville Ave, Dallas, 75231; 214.363.1114). I've been going for years; the food is great and the diehard Bears fans--my people--always guarantee a solid time. Ben's is an oasis in a sea of Dallas Cowboys vomit. Unfortunately, having the DirecTV Sunday Ticket and the fact that our beloved team always seem to lose when I'm taking in a game there (I'm convinced it's bad luck to watch the Bears at Ben's, at least for me) have conspired to keep me away in recent years. Regardless, the joint will be ablaze this coming Sunday and I can't wait to celebrate the NFL Championship with my fellow Bears fans at Ben's in Dallas after the game.

It was a tuff decision but its been 21 years and I was given an oportunity to go to the game. If not there is no place I would rather watch then with the faithful at Josie's. Good people, good food and the fight song. What more do you need.
I'll be at the game but you can bet after the Bears lead the colts to the same fate as Barbaro. I will be calling in and having the celebratory long distance cheers.

DS, I can certainly relate to Max. Not about being too young to drink and the living in Hawaii part, but yeah the rest of it. :-))

As I mentioned, my bf is a die-hard Cowboys fan. I take a perverse pleasure in the fact that a little corner of Cowboy Country is rooting for the Bears. Big Sandy, Texas, Lovie's hometown, looks more like a small town near Chicago instead of a town just east of Dallas. Bears signs everywhere and all anyone is talking about are the Bears. A friend of ours who lives near there says everyone has gone completely crazy over the Bears. It's cool but funny. I wonder who Big Sandy would've rooted for had it been the Bears and Dallas for the NFC championship (what I was hoping for, but alas).

I'm a little late to the party, but here's a great place to watch the game in San Mateo, Calif. The only possible downside: It might be crowded.
