Without a Waddle

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 | Jeff

Yesterday I was interviewed by this guy for the Chicago Tribune (article to be linked when available) and he got my silly ass talking about Tom Waddle. (Sigh) Tom Waddle. My all-time favorite Chicago Bear.

As the Bears find themselves eleven days away from Super Bowl Piccolo - I find myself thinking about the Bears of the last twenty-one years who never got this chance. Players like Chris Zorich and Big Cat Williams and Neal Anderson. Players who exemplified what it meant to play Chicago Bear football but never had the wins to show for it. I still have my Tom Waddle jersey. It doesn't fit any part of my body but it isn't going anywhere.

You see, I have two brothers. One is a psychopathic New York Jets fan. The other is a now-in-remission Dallas Cowboys fan. Here's what BearsHistory.com has to say about Waddle's '91 season:

Against the Jets on national TV, he caught 8 balls for 102 yards, making an impression on the nation. Perhaps his shining moment in the NFL and as a Bear was his performance against Dallas in the 1991 playoff loss. Waddle scored the Bears only touchdown and caught 9 passes for 104 yards. Many of these catches were spectacularly acrobatic, and sent him to the sidelines with assistance after a hammering by Dallas linebackers. At points during the game, the entire Soldier Field crowd was chanting "Waddle, Waddle, Waddle."

Dave Wannstedt said Tom Waddle couldn't play for the Bears anymore because Dave Wannstedt is a cunt. What Wannstedt should have known is that Waddle will forever be more important to the history and legacy of this organization than he will ever be. Waddle was everything good about the National Football League and I can't help but wish he'd get his Phil McConkey moment.

So who else deserved a chance for Bear immortality? I open it up to you...I'm going to leave this up till Friday morning because I wanna hear some names I haven't heard in awhile.

Very nice, Jeff. I love that guy. CLUTCH. That's all I can say. This guy absolutely KNEW he was going to get drilled but still concentrated enough to catch the ball on 3rd and 7 over(thrown) the middle between 3 linebackers, 2 safeties and the Burger King and get the first down. Then, he'd scoop up whatever he could find of his leg and/or spleen, get to the sideline and wait for his next moment to get smashed again. To this day, my friends and I refer to a receiver making a key play only to get knocked into the 3rd row of seats as 'getting Waddled.' Great stuff, man.

I too own a Tommy Waddle jersey that I couldn't fit into if my life depended on it. The man was tough. Pure and simple. I can't think of any other guys off the top of my head that fall into that category I'll have to think about that one for abit.

Wow, I haven't heard that name in way too long. He was the shit. Very nice. I know we hear from Kevin Butler from time to time, but he is definitely one of my favorites (But-head)...

I also thought Curtis Conway leaving really sucked. He was one of my favorites growing up. It was too bad Kramer hurt his shoulder otherwise the late 90s might have turned out different...

It didn't help that Turner left though either...

In any event, Bears immortality. How about Matt Suhey?

#4 Lester said . . .

How about Dennis Gentry and Dennis McKinnon? Those guys were like Denny's -- Always Open.

Roland Harper, Doug Plank, Jeff Fisher, Jim Morrissey, Jim Flanagan, Steve Shubert.

Da Bears. How can you not love them?

Loved McKinnon. Best name in Bears history...Ryan Wetnight.

Waddle was most definately an awsome player and should be forever ingrained in "good" Bears history, unlike W____unt. Doesn't Waddle do sports for a local Chicago TV station??

I like Matt Suhey, but he was on the '85 Bears team. I remember Doug Plank. I don't know what his deal was, but I know he was a really hard hitter? Anybody have any info on him? Besides the fact that he almost killed people?

Two words, MARK CARRIER!

Yes, the first thing that came to my mind was Dennis Gentry. I loved that guy in Tecmo Bowl. He was a gamer.

Another great player is Mark Carrier. Lets let that guy have his own blog. I loved that guy growing up, I'm 25 so I was quite young watching that guy but he was a hell of a player.

doug plank wore 46 which is why they called it the 46 defense. facts, huh? why you come to this place.

January 24, 2007

#9 mikebdot said . . .

Mark Carrier was indeed awesome on Tecmo Super Bowl. So was Brad Muster. Shawn Gayle was no slouch either...

Don't sell yourself short judge, you're a tremendous slouch...

Wetnight...holy crap. I like this topic.

I remember watching footage of some old school Bears play where Walter Payton gains 50 yards or so. But I explicitly remember a lineman running all the way down the field blocking for him the whole time. Who were some of the lineman during that time I ought to look up? I was born in '80, so I didn't really appreciate the line positions at that time...

My Matt Suhey comment was more of an "underappreciated" sort of comment...forgot about the restriction to those that never won...

January 24, 2007

#10 Pissed off said . . .

Almost forgot about Muster on Tecmo Bowl, Neal Anderson or "anderso" because the "n" wouldnt fit on the screen in that game, was fast as hell too.

I loved mark carrier, defensive rookie of the year, 3 time probowler and an alternate a few more years.

Jay Hilgenberg (already mentioned), Mark Bortz, Jim Covert. Those three were just beasts.

Re: Tecmo Super Bowl, my dad and I would draw names out of a hat to see what team each of us would be, then we'd play a season with that team. I almost always beat him when we met in the regular season. Ever notice how the defense moved at warp speed when you got to the playoffs?

I got 63 sacks one season with Cornelieus Bennett (sp?)...but, that was the most you could get with anyone as they only allocated 6 bits for that particular data. When I had the emulator awhile back I maxed out yardage one season as I saved prior to plays, just to see if there was a max there too...I think it was 4096 (2^12).

Playing Atlanta always pissed me off. Damn QB sweep...

"'Doug Plank started the 1975 season probably fourth-string on the depth chart, but somehow he ended up starting before the season was over, Buffone remembers. “We used to call him “bullet because he absolutely loved to hit people. He loved it so much that a lot of times it didn’t matter if it was the opponents, or his teammates. My tackling improved so much, because if I saw Plank racing over to the pile, I wanted to make sure I had the opponent down so I could get out of the way before Doug came in."

From Bearshistory.com-- You know me, I'm a defense nut.

As the previously described owner of the 1985 Bears season on DVD (very cheesily packaged but totally essential and well worth the bucks) I was amazed while watching this year at how many carries Matt Suhey had - there were some early games when he was clearly the featured back. Unbelievable workhorse and what a complement to Walter. I nominate Dennis Gentry, the 3rd down clutch man who would either catch it, or more likely, be handed the 3rd and long draw that everyone knew was the only play the Bears ran at that down/distance and yet he'd still pick it up. I do realize these guys already got the love. I'm going to nominate a recent favorite - Jim Miller. There was a guy who could have taken us places if he hadn't gotten hurt - he was just a smart QB who was incredibly shifty in the pocket for someone so seemingly immobile. He was also one that the rest of the non-Bear world thought absolutely sucked, and they were very wrong.

Speaking of comparisons with '85, I was struck with the fact that the '85 offensive line were household names, while these Very Important Bears are really not (except Kreutz of course). We need to remember John Tait, Roberta Garza, Ruben Brown and Fred Miller like Bortz, Hilgenberg, Thayer, Van Horne and Covert. They are going to be writ large in history just like their more famous predecessors.

few years ago I joined my brother and his friends for a game of touch football in a dusty corner of Central Park. but come game time, we ended up a man short. so there we are standing around trying to figure out what to do when this six-foot-something lean-and-fast-looking Asian guy happens by carrying a big blue gym bag.

"You guys got room for one more?"

yes, in fact we do. so dude drops his gym bag in the dirt, digs out a pair of cleats and laces up (not that anyone else had cleats on). he throws on a few other accessories (like maybe wristbands or something), and then reaches into the bag one last time and pulls out... yes... an authentic navy blue pro-cut Tom Waddle jersey, pulling it over his head as he trots out onto the field.

game on.

Tony Parrish. The man was Mike Browns mentor and he would straight light people up. I love TP. I also must reiterate that Big Cat is the ultimate Bear.

He was the only Chicago Bear to be on the playoff team in '95 and in '01 I believe. And the man played any position needed. He started out on the defensive line and then moved to O-line plus he had himself a couple blocked field goals.

Joniak has been calling games since '00 and I remember him talkin about Big Cat getting his big ol paw up there once or twice to get a blocked kick.

It still makes me smile to this day

Now that I've thought about it, the ultimate unknown Bear is Noah Jackson. He was an offensive guard, the only really good lineman Walter had for years before the Covert squad came along. Noah was a big fat guy, but boy could he block, and Walter probably gained 8,000 yards behind him.

PO'd: I would be glad to if my Nintendo still worked...I'm talking Tecmo SUPER Bowl though, the one with 8 plays, not 4...it kept the best stats of any football game I've ever played, as far as easy to access menus, format, etc.. Madden's stats always sucked, IMO. I played the hell out of that game. One time, when I had the emulator, I had my laptop in Calc III in college and sat there returning a punt about 80 times until I got a touchdown...with the Colts! Who sucked ass in that game if you remember...returning punts with a slow dude is quite hard...

In any event, I agree with the Tony Parrish love. He was awesome. But it seemed like the big blow was all he could do. Never as grounded and smart about angles...that's why I liked Carrier so much. He [carrier]would have made the tackle on Bush at the 50 yard line...possibly sooner...

I'm seriously thinking we're going to whoop the hell out of the Colts. I've watched both teams all year and if we get pressure on Manning, forget about it. Our defense was absolutely flying around the field. It was damned pretty. The more I think about it, the more I think it's going to be forty-something to zero. It would be the first time the Colts have been shut out since 2002 I think (against the Jets). If that isn't a big middle finger to the pundits I don't know what would be...

Yes Tecmo Super Bowl, much better than the original. Also I dont know if I agree with the shutout of the Colts on Super Bowl sunday, if that really happened, we would be the 85 Bears, blowing away the Saints then eventually blowing away the SB opponent as well. I see a tighter game, managed well and in the neighborhood of 31-28 fianl score, Bears winning of course!

Ahh. Tecmo Super Bowl. I remember playing that game religiously in the Army on Sunday morning with a buddy of mine. We were stationed in Oahu where the noon games start at 8am. We'd head down for breakfast at 7:00, grab a quick game of Tecmo, watch the first half, try to get another game of Tecmo in, watch the second half, get another game of Tecmo in, then head to the beach at noon.

My buddy, coincidentally, was an obnoxious Packers fan (go figger) and was pissed because his team wasn't available and he had to be the 49ers.

....then we discovered Sega Genesis and 'Joe Montana Football.'

Oh yeah. Hawaii showed the Bears games every weekend. Bear country extends pretty far. Of course this was 15 years ago.

Tecmo Bo was of course unstoppable but don't forget QB Eagles!!!

Not to be a downer, but is Ditka talking about who I think he is talking about?

Quote of the Year('91): "Maybe we should have won another Super Bowl, but the problems started when we got an owner that wanted to make football decisions when he knew nothing about football. He told us who to sign, who to trade, and who to draft. Like drafting Stan Thomas. I wanted nothing to do with Stan Thomas, but the owner wanted him, and that's the way it was." -Mike Ditka on WSCR in 2006

January 25, 2007

#40 Chad said . . .

Megan,

He's talking about Mike McCaskey. Who was the entire reason the Bears sucked in the 90s. And that's what led to Ditka's firing.

I forgot what year he stopped making football decisions but that is the reason we got better.

The urban legend is that Poppa Bear Halas' dying wish was to never let Mike take over the the team. It was too bad that his only daughter didn't listen and named her son the boss.

I still have my "black and blues brothers" poster with the 86 offensive line!

From what I remember in the book papa bear, (a totally worth while read!) rumors were he wanted Dave Toab to take over for him as presedent, but Virginia wanted to keep family involved.

Also, I personally think that Neal Anderson was way underrated as a bear. I have so many memories of him getting around the corner of the line and burnin down the sideline. Imagine if he had our current bears talent with him.

At least we have the negotiating point of, you know, being in the Super Bowl and having almost every other player under contract for at least one more year, so it looks good for next year. I hope that counts for something.

(It looks like only Ruben Brown and Briggs' contracts are expiring this year, and next year only Ayanbadejo, Berrian, Rex, Jones, Kreutz, and Vasher after next season. That's pretty good really.)

I always liked Trace Armstrong.

Chad,

In reference to #39/40. That's who I thought he was talking about. I wasn't sure I was allowed to actually put that name up on the website, kind of like Dick J and Wanny's.
He's the reason why we probably never had a true Bears "era". I.e. multiple playoff appearances/SuperBowls...etc>

I remember hearing his voice, kinda whiney and nasally. "The players....." makes my skin crawl...

My fav Bear not in a Super Bowl/Playoff team.. still is Doug Plank. You guys may be too young, but I just remember how impressive he was. Bigger in size then Urlacher, not as fast but that man could hit. I specifically remember him in a Green Bay game hitting a player so hard, wrapping himself around him and setting him back several yards. There was a loud clap as he just nailed this guy, I think his pads hit the GB pads just right. There was a wierd hush over the crowd and the GB player didn't move for a little while. My memory may be imbelishing a bit, but I think that's when I fell in love with the defensive side of the ball. *sigh* sooooo dreamy!!

Olin signed an extension this season.

I'm betting they go after Berrian, Tillman, Grossmand and Vasher and either say goodbye to Briggs or franchise him, especially if it looks like he's going to the Vikes (or Packers or Lions). I'm hoping the Bears can manage like the Steelers, who always seemed to lose unreplacable players only to be just as good the following year.

I agree with so many of those names... Waddle was amazing, Revie Sorey would take your head off, Plank and Fencik "invented" the high-low hits that put receivers in need of an ambulance... but I want to nominate a couple older Bears - Alan Ellis #48, and Dave Whitsell ("Weasel"). Both were DBs, and I think played on the same team. Ellis, before knee surgery, was like Deion in the sense that the other team never even threw to his side of the field. Whitsell was a terrific hitter, and is in the Saints Hall of Fame. Thank youuu, GSH.
Anyway, just a blast from the past, from an older Bear fan. Remember Wally Chambers ? Great DT.. not Hampton, but still pretty good.
Dan H is my favorite Bear of all time, though. He played with bone against bone in his knees, had 14 knee operations, and never whimped out. What a stud. Love to see him in his prime playing for this team.

How about Brad Muster? He who ran straight up and down? Also, I have to nominate Doug Flutie, only so I can tell this story...

We used to have tickets way down by the bench, around the south 42, which was in general a terrible place to see the football game but great for watching the goings on around the bench. Doug Flutie was always one step behind and a step to the side of Ditka, holding shit for him and generally (we thought) sucking up in outrageous fashion. So me and me brother would trade quotes done in nerd voice: "Mr Ditka can I hold your clipboard? Mr. Ditka can I get you coffee? That was a great call, Mr. Ditka!" and so on. It was also a great place to listen to hecklers. I'll never forget after a bad loss, I forget to who, that this young guy was just screaming at the team about how bad they sucked, and ended with "You need to go home and practice, TODAY!!!!!" The entire section was dying laughing, even some Bears.

"The Bears are going to finish what Katrina didn't", and "get in your boats and sail back to your swamp"? And what's up with throwing piss snowballs at the Saints fans?

That ranks right up there with Jeff saying he blow ten guys for a superbowl ring.

You fuckers are desperate.

Chad, the guy started every game for like five years. He had a few good years in there without the lithium. The fact that he's batshit crazy makes me like him even more.

I'd fuck Dave's mom for a Super Bowl win. God help me if that's what it comes to.

Dave, Boston is the single most racist city in America. If you want to see classless fans look no further than the Patriot faithful.

Now Chad, I know that many Bostonians are bigoted assholes but there are plenty of good ones too. To call it the most racist city in America is a slight against Detroit, St. Louis, Atlanta and so many other totally dysfunctional and highly segregated cities we have in this fine country of ours.

I once saw Tom Waddle at a Denny's in Highland Park, IL. He was in the booth in back of us along with some sort of Waddle posse. I was with my dad and brother at the time. It was probably during his fallout with Dave before '95 season commenced. He mentioned a prediction for the Bears that season to go 3W-13L .

So what if I never played football?

Writing a column* is much harder.

Hi. My name is Jeannine McParland. I don't know if this is even the right way to be going about this, but I wanted to let Chris Zorich know that my brother, Dr. Matt passed away in January. Mr. Zorich was a former patient of my brother, who was a chiropractor in Northlake. Matt accidently drowned while on a seminar/vacation in Costa Rica on January 11th, 2008. Please email me back and let me know if you get this. Also please keep his family and mine in your prayers at this time. Thanks.

doug plank, behind walter of course, was the greatest bear ever. he was the force. he could single handedly change the game. because he hit, never any pro-bowls...players hated him so forget about pro-bowls....long hair hangin out the helmet. he was a freaking thrill to watch. i would love to see randy moss run a slant on early 80's bears. he would never run a slant again. if anyone knows how i could watch early 80's footage of the bears please hip me to it. they had nothing! they would lose 6-9 every game. they were the greatest losers ever!!! and that is not an insult. tommy waddle!!! why do you think he could take a hit? practice with plank and fencik.
