A Suspect Decision

Tuesday, February 20, 2007 | Jeff

What is Ron Rivera thinking?

There are two reasons Rivera is no longer the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. The first is money because the first is always money. The second is to gain experience with the 3-4 defense, the lack of which he believes cost him several head coaching opportunities.

I'm not going to get into the money issues because it is not my place to comment on what another man believes he is worth. I will only say that I support the Bears in refusing to pay a coordinator a million dollars a year. The 3-4 situation is just puzzling though.

Rivera wanted the Dallas and San Diego jobs but he didn't get them. Boo-hoo. That sucks. But taking a demotion in this league is paramount to career suicide. The NFL changes on a dime and for all the 3-4 jobs available this year, there'll be twice as many 4-3 jobs up next year. Why not continue to coordinate one of the two or three best defenses in football and throw your hat back into the ring next year when a Giants or a Jaguars or even a Bucs job might be available?

Rivera has been a good coordinator but by no means a great one. I hope the rumors are true and Bob Babich will become the new coordinator. Loyal readers will know I've spoken highly of Babich in the past. Either way this is a defense that springs from the head coach and we've got a good one.

ADDENDUM: Peter King reports for SI that this was a flat-out firing by the Bears. Lovie did not want Rivera back and this was not, in fact, Rivera's decision.

When are they going to pay Lovie? How much? Did we officially promote Babich yet? Too many questions at this point. I dont know squat about Babich and I dont know how someone would get to know anything about him unless your his friend or work for the Bears so I cant say I support the decision to promote him or not. I havent read much about the guy in the past, he's not in the papers too much, how would I know anything about him? I cant suppor him yet but if he's Lovie's guy then he should be pretty good. As I've said Lovie is trying to distance himself from the 85 team. I think maybe this shows he has a little bit of fire to him instead of the ho-hum attitude. I would like to see him get fired up a bit.

Babich is basically the defensive coach on the sideline and he's real intense, always on camera. He and Lovie are great friends.

#3 jdawg said . . .

Babich is currently the assistant head coach, if that tells you anything.

They will wait a few days out of respect for Rivera to announce anything.

hmmm, I wonder who Babich has closely coached since Lovie's been here and if that player has gotten better in three years? hmmm.

Look, go to the trib and suntimes websites and you'll find most of the poop. Be sure and use the BS filter for both the subjects and the writers, who both have their separate agendas.

The story is pretty consistent, especially from listening to the short phone clips from Chico and Lovie, that it was a firing. Different philosophies. Rivera was never sold on the cover-2 (not sure he's wrong!) and Lovie insists on it.

I've heard or read that Briggs likes Babich, and that Hillenmeyer improved a lot under his coaching. Who knows if that's really true or just PC sound bites.

Lovie sure put the spotlight on himself - and the Bears, when they finally get the extension done, will be in for criticism if they take any step other than forward.

We need some inside information. I'm just kind of blown away by this whole deal. It just proves we don't know wtf is going on inside Halas Hall, and Lovie is the true stealth bomber. I'm kind of pissed at the local media too - don't they get any inside information? Isn't it their job to ferret out the facts? and not just get them from the podia like the rest of us?

I wonder what the players think of all this. I would love to learn that during the Super Bowl Lovie was screaming at Rivera to "blitz m..f.. blitz," and Rivera just turned off his headset after screaming "Just get me one first down and my system will work!" Something like that.

But it sounds like from the paper it could be as simple as Rivera was never Lovie's guy in the first place and he wants his guys surrounding him. Now he's got some credibility built up and he wants to capitalize on it. I guess that's fine as long as he's picking good folks. I do like his balls/confidence - when he said "trust me that I know how to run this team." That's a strong man laying that out, and at this point, I do trust him.

No word about Ron Turner, huh?

February 20, 2007

#6 Pissed off said . . .

I trust Lovie too but man, Rivera didnt seem that bad, lets face it, we liked the D and some people hated the offense. We thought Turner was the F-up not Rivera all year. Now Riveras gone and we'll move forward with Turner. Weird

If King is reporting that its a firing then that conflicts with what I've heard that they just let his contract expire. I heard his contract expired today, the 20th but I guess he was fired yesterday. Thats kind of classless by the Bears to fire him the day before his contract expires if indeed thats what happened. Why not just let it expire and have the record show that the Bears just chose not to renew his contract?

Babich was named d-coordinator today says chicagobears.com. And I like this move, especially the fact that he's one of Lovie's long-time buddies, that makes it a good move to me.

#8 jdawg said . . .

Babich is Lovie's man and other teams were starting to come sniffing around him. If Rivera didn't leave this year it would be next year. Its unfortunate but I think Lovie did what he thought was best. As far as game-time adjustments, we may never know who's fuck-up that was.

Officially, the Bears chose not to renew his contract; but the media is taking a page from Ditka and saying "who ya crappin'? This is a firing!"

So long Rivera. You've had an eye out at the door for some time now, and a longing to go prove yourself somewhere else. Adios. ( and don't let the door hit you on the way out).

But....let me ask this (to fuel conspiracy theories), the Rivera 'letting go' was Lovie Smith's decision to go with a guy he is familiar with. Then, they turn around and hire a guy with two years experience as a graduate assistant (if you are familiar with the position, he was no more than a gopher for the rest of the staff) and he happens to be Dick Butkus' nephew. Where is his other connection? Ron Turner was the head coach at Illinois, and Harry Hiestand (current O-line coach) was coaching him at Illinois. Are you sure it is Lovie with the hire here? Coaches hire who they know, and as far as I can tell, Lovie doesn't know Luke from Dick (one of the two greatest linebackers of all time; come on give me the fact that Nitschke is from Chicago).

Hey, my 'rant' comes more from being a guy who at one time tried to find his way to being a full time coach; worked many long years and made a ton of contacts; here's a guy with no experience (basically) going to the big league. Good for him, but I know that there are a bunch of coaches looking at this and wondering how the hell does this guy get this position. What?!?!?!?

I don't think Lovie and Rivera always got along or agreed. And Lovie definetly likes Babich better.

I think it was more of Lovie's defense too.

February 21, 2007

#13 WindyCityPackerFan said . . .

Hester,

You may be right. Lovie has had a pretty fair amount of turnover on the coaching staff since he has started. I will give him credit for not being afraid to let go of guys he may not be 100% comfortable with.

Again, it is up to Bears' management to pay Lovie and show him their faith in him.

I thought it was interesting in 2004 when Ted and Jerry signed themselves to 5 year deals and signed Lovie to a 4 year deal.

Thoughts?

I think maybe they thought the Rivera was going to land one of these open jobs. So, they figured, "ok, we are going to have to replace this guy -- what should we do?" They lock themselves in a room and change the org chart. Then, DOH!, Ronnie gets passed by. Instead of going against their new plan, they decided to go forward. They conviced themselves that they were better off with whatever the new plan is, so why go back to the old Ron Riveria plan?

Riveria got caught with the wandering eye. I would say this is a good reason to never make it plain to your current employer that you are looking around at other opportunities. They have to be forward thinking and start planning of life without you. They reexamine the org chart. Same goes with wives and husbands with wandering eyes, too. If you change your mind, you might be screwed in the end because the other party moved on without you.

Good luck, Ron. I didn't expect you back this season. I had you off my emotional org chart too.

Hope I just hope this doesn't turn into Vince Tobin replacing Buddy Ryan...

Butkus is something like the assistant o-line coach. Big whup.

Yes, Rivera was let go to promote one of Lovies guys because... wait for it....

Lovies is the head coach!

This is not rocket science. Lovie did not catch Rivera in bed with Rusty Jones. Lovie promoted his guy, who was getting eyed by other teams, and let Rivera go, who wanted to go HC for another team.

In a perfect world Chico would have gotten a HC job (in the AFC) and Babich would have been promoted and children would be tossing rose petals down Michigan Avenue.

But it didn't work out that way.

Hey, what about Grossman?

D'oh!

Say Something

Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish.  You are not free, however, to be an asshole.  So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
