Super Bowl Diary V: Uncharted Territory

Thursday, February 1, 2007 | Jeff

I don't have any idea how to behave this week. No clue.

1. My mailman comes into my office every day and says, "Mr. Bears." To which I usually respond with the number of days left till the game and he laughs. That's adequate, right?

2. I wear my Bears hat everywhere. A bird shit on it yesterday while I was walking up 8th Avenue and I literally started doing a happy dance because I've heard it's good luck.

3. People keep coming up to me because of the Bears hat and asking me "How do you think it'll go Sunday?" I never have an answer. Sometimes I give the jokey Bears 72-3. Sometimes I give the uber-humble I think we have a shot. But every time I hear the question I just want it to be Sunday at 6:24 pm.

4. I don't want to watch ESPN and its the only channel I watch. I want to listen to the national media cover the Bears as they play their biggest game in two decades but I end up getting pissed off at their coverage. Then I end up pacing all over the place.

5. As I walk around New York I catch myself giving fake radio interviews. It's sick. I'm crossing the street alone and pontificating about the Bears special teams except when I'm interviewing with ESPN Deportes where its the Bears equipo especiales.

6. I know how to brace myself for victories and defeats in the regular season. I even know how to do it for the playoffs. But the Super Bowl? How can you predict emotion for something like that?

So true. I am so sick of people asking me how I think it'll go on Sunday. I could break down the game for each and every one of them and that would ensure they dont ask me again but I will probably never see these people again. Yes I love the Bears, no dont talk to me about it. I am actually sick of reading stuff. I am just taking it all in but I too want to just get the damn game started. There is nothing anyone can write anymore that is original, its all been said before. In the words of Guy Ledouche from MXC....."Get it on!"

During the week it's not so bad: I'm pretty good about going to my quiet place. BS'ing here definitely helps. But come game time, every week, I lose it. I mean, screaming at the top of my lungs at a TV screen that can't hear me, clutching at whatever's nearby, and from time to time risking putting my head through the ceiling. I look like some crappy beer commercial about the stereotypical football fan. At least I haven't thrown anything yet, thank hell. But yeah, I'm beginning to think that inviting a bunch of people over for a SB party might destroy my psyche if it doesn't cause me permanent embarrassment.

I wear my Bears gear everywhere and no one says a thing to me. There is a guy that stands outside of the subway everyday who shouts "go Bears" when I exit on my way to work. That's it, though. I also don't see nearly enough Bears gear on other people around town. Sad.

I was just thinking how excited I am for this game to be played so I can have my life back. This is like a huge open item that I need closed to resume my normal existence. I can't stop thinking about the game. I don't even bring it up to people. I don't want to talk about it any more. I use other people to take my mind off it. Then I wake up and it's the first thing I think about. The Bears could win the Super Bowl in the next 90 hours.

I received a HUGE disappointment in my personal life this morning. Now I don't generally believe in things like omens or bad signs or anything - but it reminded me that this is just a game.

It's gone from a diversion to a distraction. Amazing - and yet once you're caught up in it, it's impossible to shake. It will be over soon, I remind myself. My personal disappointment will be with me longer than the glow of victory or the disappointment of defeat will be.

Still - I really hope they win.

I can't tell you how I danced up in down, all by myself at midnight when we won the championship!! I am living in Germany but originate from the good ole windy city. I still feel the thrill of that moment. I can hardly contain myself as I pack to head to Miami tomorrow, courtesy of work. I am not sure if i will be able to get a seat, in the stadium where my beloved Bears will be playing , dare I say it, the SUPERBOWL. But I will be there with my team 100%. Am I nervous--hell yeah--but more than anything I am thrilled to be Rooting for Da Bears to Victory!!

Bill, hang in there brother. One thing I've always found is that when really bad things happen to you, they are always worst right when they happen - the next day, it's a little less bad, the following day, even less. In this case, by the third day you will wake up and it will be Sunday. Which we all know will be a great day. Some of us believe in prayer, and whether you do or not, I am sending a prayer your way. DBB'ers stick together man.

This is just a game. Don't get me wrong, though. It is a BIG GAME! Let's get you distracted. There's been some great stories in the Tribune. I didn't realize where Lovington NM was - a nothing little town just a few miles from the Texas border in the Trans-Pecos desert. Good story today about Dan-I-E-A-O-U and sometimes Y-l Manning vs. Peyton Manning - Danieal sounds very mentally strong. Pretty amazing that this Abilene Christian guy (who initially was a Nebraska guy) gets picked 42nd in the draft - he must of wowed the Bears big time. Here's some trivia - he's the second highest NFL pick in school history. Who's the first? Had to search for that -Johnny Perkins, who was taken with the 32nd pick of the 1977 NFL Draft (second round) by the New York Giants. Don't remember him even a little bit. Pretty cool Piney Woods story about Ruben Brown. I'm very impressed at the way Angelo cobbled together our offensive line with old free agents and a homegrown Kreuz. By the way, I wonder if anyway can tell me what it is exactly (or approximately for that matter) that makes him so great? Not saying he isn't, just an honest question. Is he better than Jay Hilgenberg was? (another repeated Pro Bowler, if I recall correctly). What makes a great center?

Seriously, these writers making predictions is more played than Cats. That is for the fans. There are very few of these dipshits I pay any attention to. Jaworski would be one, although he has been wildly off this year -- particularly about the Bears. At least with his predictions.

Fans make predictions to talk shit, pump themselves up (or cope with their anxiety), and just generate chatter. If you get paid to write about sports, the first two shouldn't apply, and you get paid to accomplish the third with a little more art. Leave the predictions to us underlings and do your fucking job: write about what has actually happened.

So Indy area Chipotle restaurants are having a rally tomorrow, calling it "Blue-rito Friday", passing out free burritos for all wearing "Hometown Blue". Technically the Bears colors are blue and orange. It's not "C" team blue but what I'm going to do is, go in there, grab a burrito, sing our theme song at the top of my lungs on the way out, and stomp on the blue-rito in the parking lot.
Might need someone to bail me out or get me some comped medical care afterward but I'm game.

Thanks DS - I will be staying away as recommended. Love the 2 links today though, great one you found that is spot on and the other Nicole one was extremely funny. I will comment that the analysts are years and years down the road into the realm of picking games. Obviously there's nothing to report so what else is there to do, right? So I don't fault them for that, only for conducting stupid and specious analysis. I am still curious... how many mea culpas were there (besides the great one from Wojo) after the lemmings all jumped the cliff and were squashed on the rocks below? Had to be more than just the one, right? The fact that I don't know should give ample evidence that I am sticking to my resolution - only this site and the Chicago papers, unless assisted by more intrepid souls.

Danimal: Good luck with that analysis.

Phil: Glad you liked the blogspot.

DS: I'm not a fan of Tabasco or Chipotle at all for that matter but tomorrow I rob them of a burrito. Typically, I don't waste food. I ask the server not to put tomatoes on a salad bc I don't want to waste them. I love ketchup, practically have an obsession with it but tomorrow I make an exception against my waste consciousness. I will waste a blue-rito and stand proud in my real blue and orange decor, flare, beads, etc.

First of all, wasting a Chipotle burrito would be a worse sin than murder in the Church of Coxy. Nonetheless the cause is right, so proceed.

Second of all, is anybody else tired of hearing Tank Johnson make himself out to be a saint. The guy is making himself sound so much worse, condemning rap music and video games for violence. You dont have assault rifles a few feet from your two daughters one day, then the next day you are Tipper Gore bitching about video game violence. Sorry Tank, just admit you screwed up by hanging out with a douche, say you are happy to be allowed to play and that you are moving on with your life. Tank, I like you but, Who you crappin?

Damn, I just got done going thru youtube watching everything Chicago Bears related, most of it sucks but I love peoples loyalty and the fact that some peoples lifestyle revolves around Da Bears.

Thank you Coxy for your stamp of approval for my mexican hat dance on the blue-rito.

Mr. Pissed: There's a certain tie that bonds us ketchup addicts. I'm serious when I say that I have the food service size ketchup with the pump. It's serious.

As far as Tank goes, it's pretty much PR 101 that when you f-up you admit it, pretend that the experience has humbled you and the public simmers down after a week or two.
Tank pretending to wear a halo ... he might as well bend over and let the media have their way with him. They'll dig up the detention he got in 8th grade when he told a teacher she was 'hurtin for a squirtin'.

#42 Max said . . .

Tank can say whatever Tank wants to say as long as he tackles people on Sunday.

I have an accounting test tomorrow and I have not studied a lick of it. I don't understand accounting. I have been in the class for 2 weeks and I believe accounting should be considered a foriegn language.

On the flip side, I have worn a Bears shirt to every accounting class so far and yesterday my teacher came up to me and handed me the "Bear Report" latest edition with Peanut on the cover. How can I drop this class now? Coolest thing a teacher has ever done.

And I am proud to say that Hawaii is represented in Bear attire. The big mall in Honolulu is completely sold out of Bear wear and I get shouts of encouragment everyday about the Bears. So, while I want the freaking game to start already, I do believe I am going to sit back, weeks and months and maybe even years down the road, and remember just how awesome of a feeling this is, to know we are playing for the Super Bowl.

The latest angle is how the Colts defense has really stepped it up this postseason - and why.

I took a class once that used a fun book called "How to Lie With Statistics". It taught me to be skeptical of EVERY claim. (I annoy the hell out of my wife doing that, by the way.)

Anyway, simply math. The Colts gave up 170 yards per game rushing in the season and 73 yards per game in the post season. So the run defense has dramtically improved.

Well, yeah. But when it "warms up" from 5 degrees to 15 degrees in Chicago, it's still cold!

The 73 yds per game is actually from only 20 carries per game. The average yds per carry was 3.88 (and 4.00 just looking at the division and conference game - ignoring the WC game).

The Bears averaged 3.95 in the post season on 40 carries per game.

Past results are not a guarantee of future returns - but I would be willing to say the Bears will rush more than 20 times. In fact, unless the Colts jump out to a big lead, they will rush 40 times and likely get around 150 yards.

But that's speculation. The annoying thing is that the writers don't spend a minute looking at cause/effect. Oh - 73 yards per game must mean an improved run defense. Well, compared to thier PATHETIC 5.33 yds per carry run defense in the regular season - it is. But 4.00 yds per carry is not good run defense. It isn't. Yet these writers write about it and readers who assume it must be true beleive it.

February 1, 2007

#48 Bill said . . .

EXCUSE ME - here I'm talking about simple math and I can't divide. The playoff average yds per carry for the Colts was 3.61 including the WC game. However, I think the more important number is the 4.00 for the division and conference game.

i had a nightmare last night that my brother 'kidnapped' me on Superbowl Sunday, got me into a car and started driving west. i was freaking out because i was missing the game and he wouldn't turn around. the thought of missing even one second of that game was killing me. most stressful dream ever. at one point we heard on the car radio that it was Colts 9-0 in the 2nd quarter (don't worry, there's no way this dream's predictive). then i ended up in Indianapolis (his wife's from Indy, their wedding was there). I was pissed. mobbed by a sea of people in Colts sweatshirts. then, suddenly, we were in Miami at the game, when a stealth-bomber-looking aircraft screeched overhead and crashed nearby, and the stadium had to be evacuated. so i was outside trying to stop traffic so that some schoolchildren could cross the street (why were they at a stadium on a Sunday in uniform?) and I got hit by a car.

so you see how this week is affecting my psychological state...

Wow, this site has been my faithful companion since I found it a few months back. For the uninitiated my name does not imply that I used to be a Patriots’ fan. Just that I work overseas. I was born and raised on the Southside in Roseland and am a diehard Cubs and Bears fan.

I must tell you that the Bears’ faithful have seeded the planet. I live in Malaysia, and I have watched or listened to Bears games all over the world. It can be a challenge at times when you have to stream over a crappy broadband connection, or listen on Internet radio. One of the best was watching the Arizona game in a hotel room in Hong Kong. At one point I actually turned the game off because it was killing me. I think the maid in the hall thought there was a fight going on for all my yelling at the TV.

Then I watched the Seattle playoff game in Seattle and I can’t tell you what pleasure that was. When I returned back to Malaysia I found that the conference final would not be on TV because we only get the ESPN games here. What to do? I changed the date for one of my trips to Australia and ended up watching the game in a bar called Cheers in downtown Sydney with a bunch of diehard Bears and Saints fans at 6 in the morning on Monday. That night I went out and was treated with a viewing of the comet McNaught in the night sky, it must have been an omen.

With the Superbowl looming one of my customers told me he needed me to come to Phuket Thailand this weekend. I reminded him that the first time in my life the Bears were in the championship (63) I was in diapers, and given the fact that they come along once a generation, if I missed this game, the next time I see it I will probably be in diapers again. He agreed of the importance, so I will be watching the game on a beach that was ravaged by the Tsunami a few years ago. I just hope I don’t completely embarrass myself.

Thanks again for all you do

I have already qualified for the producers club Bahama's trip.

I dont know where to start with this article but he mentions Rex's fragile psyche, fragile psyche! This dude is so mentally tough and has taken so much shit and still prevailed. How is he fragile? What a douche! Also I'm not so sure I agree with the whole upset angle either, fine he picked the Bears to win, but because its the "year of the upset"? How exactly is this an upset besides the fact that the Colts are favored? Maybe thats all he's eluding to but the Bears are the #1 seed in the NFC, Colts werent #1 in AFC. I dont get it. Does this guy know anything about the Bears? I guess not. Oh well back to the boycott of Fox Sports, all idiots!

Jeans day at the bank, thank God, got my giant C shirt on - now all these Texans will know the score. Bless Nate Newton - and I can't believe I'm saying that - I hate the Cowboys but he was on the radio this morning as the only guy talking sense... "I don't know... I just keep thinking in the back of my mind, what about that Bears defense, what about that Bears defense...Drew Brees came in as the hottest quarterback in the league and look what the Bears D did to him." Then the other morons pipe up "well remember that Brees did roll up some yards... yes I know scoreboard is everything, but still..." And more stupid shit: "it's possible that the defense and special teams will score enough to counter Manning, since you can't count on the Grossman and the Bears offense to put up points..." These guys have had nearly 2 weeks to analyze this game and this is what they c0me up with? This is getting personal - I'm thinking the only solution here is not just win the Super Bowl but freaking search and destroy. To paraphrase Dr. Detroit: "Peyton, we will rip off your head and shit down your neck!" Click. 44-0 or bust.

I'm covered in dark navy and orange today. One of the ladies I work with went and bought an Indy jersey last night. I said, "You caved in" she said yeah, but I don't know who the guy is, (guy being Dominic Rhodes).
I abso cannot stand:
1. Bandwagon fans
2. Women who know nothing about football any sports for that matter.
3. People who spend money on team clothes that they only wear because 'everyone else is wearing it'.
PLEASE LORD GIVE ME PATIENCE TO DEAL WITH THIS F*IN CITY FOR JUST A FEW MORE HOURS!

Bears Day at work; most people participated - even a Packer Fan I know fairly well! (He said he's always loved Chicago since he moved from Wisconsin, and so even though he's a PAcker fan, this is for Chicago.

I went with an Urlacher jersey instead of a sweatshirt (luckily my oldest son's jersey fit me.)

Walked past the lions in Bears helmets in front of the Art Institute. LAst night, I noticed MANY buildings with lights in Orange and Blue. The Merchandise MArt for example - also a lot of newer buildings. The Merc has alarge vide board you can see fromt he street with business news, a running ticker, and three panels with the day's statistics. Well, they changed all the colors of the graphics to orange and blue.

It's EVERYWHERE downtown.

My wife is a kindergarten teacher in a school in the 'burb we live in. They wrote a Super Bowl Shuffle adapted to their room and teachers and activities. The local paper is coming in today ot do a story on it!

Win or lose - this has been AMAZING!

Anyone going to be in Wrigleyville watching the game?

Phil -
Many things have changed since 1985; one is the prolifiartion of media - cable outlets and the internet in particular. ESPN didn't broadcast any live sporting events back then. The internet as a media/social outlet didnt' exist. Sports talk radio was limited to the local AM stations a few hours a week.

So now there are a RIDICULOUS amount of reporters and commentators to fill all of this. And while I admit I never paid attention to it as I have now - this experience has shown that most of the them are not good at all. But they pump out the opinions and sports nuts keep watching and listening and reading.

So we get "Experts" saying Grossman has a fragile psyche (where did he get THAT from?!?!) I read one say before the Saints game that the Bears woudl lose becuase Rex had a good game against Seattle so this would be his turn for a bad game. WHAT?? He gets PAID for that analysis?? It sounds like some guy in a bar after several drinks.

We get the guys spouting the misleading "yards per game" Colts run defense stat. Can't be bothered to get into the numbers at all. It's just a bunch of guys with credentials and an expense account that need to fill a quota of words and so rather than spend time researching and analyzing - they repeat the same stuff in different ways.

Nicole - glad you are coming to Chicago! Bring plenty of warm clothes - it's going to be BRUTAL this weekend.

My Boiler son is staying at Purdue to watch the game - but he and his roommates are having a party of Bear's fans, so he'll be fine.

Are you from Chicago originally? If so, welcome home!

Bill thanks for the street scene - I am so so jealous - wish like anything I could be in Chicago for the next 3 days - many times better than being in Miami - but all better than being a Bear fan in San Antonio Texas this weekend. Oh well, going to represent alone with my family - and the Bears flag is going up in front of my house tonight I promise (been lacking a flag pole) - my brother-in-law shipped a light up Bears lawn ornament which has all my neighbors asking why we put up a snowman in January -

And can't say how much I love the rallying cry - many thanks to Fred for a soul-stirring post - could be my favorite of all time -

I'm from Valpo originally but would much rather call Chicago home right now than Indy. I've reconsidered my profession this past month to relocate North. My parents have been begging me since I move here to come back up. Anyone hiring so I can come home? :)

In addition:
I also say Fuck the penny
Bill- can't wait to see the city tonight.
Big Rob- I can't sleep either.
Mr. Pissed- I've been put in 'time out' at work because of my humming and turning up the theme songs on my computer.

I was at the bar last night having a good old time drinking my favorite bourbon beverage and must have asked about 50 people who was gonna win the Bears Bowl on Sunday and EVERY single person was going for the Colts(extreme run on sentence).... ALL the people who elaborated thought the Bears were either gonna get crushed or beat by a TD....What a bunch of brainwashed retards.... It was just silly.... I just can't wait to go back next thursday and tell them to all go to hell.... I have not posted lately cause my brain is full, but I just had to today.... I really believe this game could be a blowout by the Bears..... They get up early it could get out of hand and just get ugly for the Colts..... You guys are $$ and you don't even know it!!
