Super Bowl Diary VI: Finish

Friday, February 2, 2007 | Jeff

Bear down, Chicago Bears...
It is on the defensive line this Sunday. The push from the perimeter will be there from Brown, Ogunleye and Anderson but there must be presence up the middle from Tank, Ian and Israel. Allow Manning to step up and throw and we're in for a very long day. Tank Johnson as MVP...that'd really put a full dump in Jay Mariotti's shorts.

Make every play, clear the way to Victory...
When the throws are there to be made, Rex Grossman must make them. He doesn't need to be brilliant but he needs to be efficient. Every first down keeps PeyRod off the field.

Bear down Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly...
The Colts have not transformed though the world wants us all to believe they have. They have soft wide receivers and are undersized. Every catch they make, every gain on the ground...the Bears must hit them and hit them hard. If they want a loan from the Bank of the Middle of the Field, make them pay interest.

We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation, with your T formation...
Benson and Jones must do their best impression of Taylor and Jones-Drew and Ron Turner must not make the mistakes of Herm Edwards and Brian Billick. The Colts defense is vulnerable on the edges and that is where the Bears must run, run, run. Wear the Colts down and the Bears can repeat their fourth quarter success of two weeks ago.

Bear Down, Chicago Bears. And let them know why you're wearing the crown...
Keep that chip on your shoulder. Play like your mama slapped you. Play like Daddy said you'll never be nothing. You deserve to be in this Super Bowl no matter what the pundits say. Play like it.

You're the pride and joy of Illinois...
I've never had more fun being a Bears fan. Arizona. Giants Stadium on Sunday night. Gould in OT. A snowy fourth quarter against the Saints. This has a been a brilliant season.

Chicago Bears, Bear Down!
One more game. Finish.

I'm probably going to take the afternoon off cuz I'm not getting shit done here at work anyway. I am so frickin antsy I cant sit still. I need something to do to take my mind off of things, though thats impossible, or just curb my enthusiasm at least. I think Saturday night will be the worst but I may have to get so loaded that I just pass out, thats the only way I'm getting any quality sleep anyways. I think Saturday night I'll go to the Wizards game, (our NBA-D league affiliate) to try to get my mind on something else for a while. I dont think this is healthy.

I think we will see "Anytime" Devin Hester line up on offense as a wide receiver at some point in the game and he'll score an offensive touchdown. One of those Steve Smith isolation plays, maybe. Or perhaps an end around--ooh, I like that. I refuse to believe that one game, 7(?) weeks ago, was the only time they were planning on using Hester offensively. They've worked on it. I'm sure. There was no reason to use him offensively up until now. It'd kind of be like tipping your hand.

At the very least he'd be a great decoy to draw the safety away from Berrian or Moose on the other side. But wouldn't youlove to see him get the ball on an end around/reverse?!

I'm glad Favre is coming back. The drafting and the development of their his eventual replacement gets put off yet another year. He has every right to do what he wants - but obviously he is not the long term solution and the team needs to move on. I've read and heard from a Packer fan I trust that Aaron Rogers is not the answer. So we get another two chances to beat him.

Big Rob, I'm from the Bismarck, ND area.

No more comments on Favre, please, its super bowl week.

I dont see Hester getting in on offense, I dont want him in on offense unless its a decoy or a possible end around which I think the defense would sniff out right away anyway. He has enough trouble catching the ball on returns.

DS,
You wanted to know when I finished relating Stave 2 of "Da Bears Song - Being a Ghost Story of the Superbowl". It's posted now.

Mikebdot - You are close, but the acutal final score was related to me by the "The Ghost of the Chicago Bears Future" in a dream (see above). So all this speculation is moot. You forget that Indy may get some scoring during garbage time during the entire fourth quarter.

Thanks to Jeff and Noah - I have enjoyed reading this blog and adding my 2 cents occasionally over the season.

As for this huge game, I add the following two points:

1. Although it has not gotten a ton of press, the Colts are going to focus their game plan on the run early more so than anything else they can do. The Bears got gashed by Seattle up the middle in the second half - Indy knows this and the Bears must respond. The interior of the Bears D Line must stuff the stretch run/draw plays or it will be a really long day.

2. My second point follows the first. The Colts need to be forced into obvious passing downs. We all know that the D Line must get pressure - we know that Urlacher and Briggs must come up huge in the middle of the field. However, I believe a player who flew under the radar for the Saints game and who will make an impact in this game is Ricky Manning, Jr.

Wayne and Harrison have not had a huge impact in the playoffs because they have been double teamed - expect Tillman and Vasher to chuck them at the line and play a lot of man + a double team from the safeties over the top. This formula was used by KC, Balt and NE, which forced Peyton to rely heavily on Dallas Clark and to also look even further down the check down list to Utecht, Moorehead and his running backs. I expect Urlacher and Briggs to neutralize Dallas Clark to some extent. Hence, Ricky will line up on the slot receivers and strong side tight end. If Ricky can neutralize the slot receiver/tight end - the Bears are in business. My prediction - pick 6 from Ricky Manning, Jr.

GO Bears!

Nice synapsis Jeff well written........And as someone else pointed out the O line HAS to come through with a smash ass performance that they are more than capable of accomplishing. Yes the whole Superbore thing is an enormous suck fest however, when OUR team is in it it is OUR enormous, glorious suck fest. Actually the only thing besides waiting until forever that worries me are the safety tandem that is Harris and Manning. They gotta play good or else. All the MILLIONS of words written always come down to a few things you do in a football game to come away with the win. Stop the run, run the ball, rush the passer, field position, turnovers, big plays........win the day GO BEARS!!!!!

Nice analysis Starbuck. I am stuck in the middle about using Hester - I would love to exploit his speed and think he will be a "pull out if necessary" deal. However, I am most concerned with Turner remembering what got him here, and not getting too fancy. I fear all offensive coordinators are under some (real or perceived) pressure to be wild, crazy and creative because its the Super Bowl. With all of our weapons in all 3 phases, and two stud running backs (who I hope they don't forget can catch passes), there really isn't the need to do much fancy. Rashied Davis on a reverse? Absolutely. Sitting here trying to think of something else I would also find acceptable and am drawing a blank. As in - no flea flickers, no direct snaps to running backs, no half back option passes, no surprise early game on-side kicks - nothing like that please, we don't need it. Our guys are so good at executing the basic game plan, and our basic game plan works against everybody. The extra effort stuff in this game are going to be things like Moose actually catching all the passes that are thrown his way. Hester getting something big done on nice dry grass. Ron Turner conducting a reprise of THE DRIVE. Tillman making the interception, even if it takes a great diving catch to make it. Pick Your Defensive Lineman jumping on the loose ball and securing the turnover instead of trying to pick it up and run with it and losing it to a Colt. Basic things. I have high confidence that Lovie and crew understand exactly this concept. Which is why we are going to win big in the Super Bowl on Sunday. FUCK THAT PENNY. We don't need it!

Here is the text of an e-mail a buddy of mine send me. Made me think...
...............................................'
You may not remember the 1990 Super Bowl but this one reminds me of
that game: Bills vs Giants

Giants were heavy dogs playing with QB issues (Phil Simms got hurt
that year-enter the Hos) and a strong running game. And by the way-
those guys played nasty defense too. (Does any of this sound like
our beloved Bears?) There was no way they could play with an offense
like the Bills had- no huddle, gun, spread you out. (sound familiar?)

Does this mean anything? Probably not but that was one of the best
SBs I have ever seen.

Forget Urlacher and Manning. They will score points and the Bears
will make some plays defensively. This game will be decided by the
Bears O and the Colts D. I like our chances (as long as Rex doesn't
take a gigantic &*%$ when the ball is kicked off and I don't think he
will because he has proven in college and in the pros that when he's
interested he is going to play well). I think he'll be interested.

Also, special teams will be pivotal and I know Vinatieri is the best
there is with his SBs and all but this phase isn't even close-edge Bears

Am I crazy? My desire for them to win probably does overshadow the
realistic picture. However, I do think it will be a great game.

Words cannot express the incredible amount of pent up energy I have felt for the last few weeks. I must have put on 5 pounds of muscle working out like a crazy man (while humming the fight song) just to get some release (my poor girlfriend doesn't know what hit her). This has trully been an amazing season and I will never forget being at Soldier Field for the first time watching my heroes stomp on my most hated of squads, the 49er's. Getting drunk and getting tossed out of Ditkas that same weekend comes a close second. Driving a stolen golf cart through the tunnel near the stadium...we won't even get into that. All I can say is if this thing is close, and I doubt it will be, the ghost of 34 is going to do all he can to give us the win, I just know it. I could feel his spirit with this team all season long. Well that's it , I'm way too jacked, going to pummel the first person I see wearing blue and white. So just do it boy's, for Walter and Brian and everyone else who has ever worn the GSH.

Well, my good friends, the hour is near. Before we enter into battle as a team, we need a pep talk, which I now attempt to express:

First, lets acknowledge our leader Jeff. His hours of rearranging bits within his word processor has spilled forth into our hearts...

Second, to our foes who frequent this blog: You make some good points but you're all Dead Wrong.

And now to Sunday's game

The facts: We already defeated the best that can me hurled at us. We did it with Defense (hit em, bruise em, strip em) and with the Special Teams (recall the 108 yard run against Gothoms as one of many) and with the run. We had the "good Rex" (mere icing on the cake). IMO, we'll continue on with the same- The Bears will force Manning to throw sideline button hook comebacks and let nothing go deep. They will stop the run up the middle and beat the hell out of the backs off tackle. (sure, they'll be in a nickel a get burned a bit but Urlacher will also inflict pain).

Manning is a dome mom-ma's boy QB who is a choker. He can be disrupted. He also is prone to recent crappy games (threw 6+ INTs in playoffs). I say he cokes.

And now, the Ralley Cry

Let is stand together and embrace all ye who have lost hope! Stand I say! Lock arms with us as we spit into the wind and laugh (with a pirate laugh) at all the nay-sayers. Ha Ha HA HA! Now is the time to arise. Rise up then! Rally behind us as we lead you to this victory. Together we shall prove victorious. Together we shall triumph! Your hour of decision is here!!!!

Tank Johnson allowed to play? What a joke. As a legal gun owner, this kind of crap just makes me want to puke. The judge should lose his position.

Don't even try to justify it. Because you can't. I don't care if it's the Super Bowl.

Tank Johnson should be watching this game from Chicago. All you have to do is read the last 6 paragraphs of this article to know why: http://www.tribstar.com/cnhi/tribstar/sports_columns/local_story_032003144.html

Apparently, he's above the law. But, if it was one of us, we'd be watching this game from county lock-up.

February 3, 2007

#52 AfroCelt said . . .

Is this the Tank blog? Nope. Tank will be judged by the Team, the judicial system, and the media/fans. Guess what? The media doesn't matter. At the end of the day, Tank's future as a citizen will be decided in a court room and his employment in the Bears offices. Gearing up for the biggest game in Bear's recent memory, this issue couldn't be further from the playing field. And THAT makes it completely useless to discuss.

On a similar note, Sayers was a great player, but he isn't on the Bears payroll anymore. He can say or do whatever he wants. And as a personal aside, he does come off as an ass, but I don't care...remember that whole far-from-the-playing-field comment?

Bottom Line: Two highly skilled teams will play. One will win, one will lose. I'm a Bears fan so I want the Bears to win. Dave, go back to trolling forums on something else and let the rest of us enjoy our time. You have presented no original ideas and have not contributed to the atmosphere. I'm wasting my time trying to use logic, but for the sake of base humanity I'm willing to try.

PS: I'm sure all of us could go on a rant about the circus that media is and will be, but this is not the place...it'll come after the final whistle blows :)

Why should he miss the Super Bowl? He has not been sentenced to anything. He is awaiting trial. Ever heard of innocent until proven guilty?

Next, if you are talking about probation violation, then who the hell cares. Part of being a judge is upholding laws for the betterment of society. Is society better off by making Tank miss the Super Bowl. Like punishing a child? Is that what it comes down to? You are so immature. The State of Illinois is better off by having Tank play.

Get real. Either you hate the Bears and are looking for some dumb excuse or your a racist. which is it?

Perfect... tell your kids that.

I bring it up because the topic will be brought up tomorrow, that's why. It's a part of this game.

When I read through all of the "Tank" articles, there was a definite anti-gun tone to many of them. I don't care how many guns he has and how many rounds of ammo he has as long as he has them LEGALLY and uses them responsibly.

When he doesn't he adds fodder to the "I hate guns" crowd.

But, hey it's the Super bowl right? Let's just reinforce to all of the youth of America that it's fine to break laws and be rewarded for it.

And I'd feel EXACTLY the same way if it were Peyton Manning in the same situation.

The Tank thing rubs me the wrong way, he's a Bear, this is a Bear blog, so that's why I posted here.

Megan: Here in one piece, chompin on some deep dish drinking a beer, wearing my orange beads.

GLORIOUS!!!!

I feel like I am not ready for the game. I do not know enough about these teams. I don't even know what this game means to Peyton's legacy. They havent talked about Grossman enough. Where is the super bowl coverage? I have not heard anything about the game in two weeks.

I am a die hard Chicago Bears fan who lives in the U.S. Virgin Islands. When I was about 8 years old, I saw Walter Payton rush with the style, aggresion and grace that convinced me that this was the team for me. I hope the bears crush the Colts because I have been waiting for this moment for over 20 years. I have taken countless years of criticism for cheering for a team during the Cowboys, Patriots, and Giants era. The Defensive line has to hold Rhodes and Addai to less than 120 yards combined and put a tremendous amount of pressure on Manning. Oh yeah, for the record, the only Payton worthy of being immortalized is spelled with an "A" not an "E" and the only Manning worth talking about is named Ricky. GO BEARS!

Halle-fuckin-lullah.. at the almost last moment... Sinclair and Mediacom settled their hash, so I will be able to watch your/my/our beloved Bears at HOME tomorrow... in Hi-DEF !

When I told my lady friend about Peyton's thumb, she said "Don't worry.. God doesn't love you THAT much. It's not broken". Ah, well.. one can always dream.

BEAR DOWN... you lovable Bears !
Make every play lead the way to victory!
For 40 years now, I have loved all you blue-and-0range fighters. Go out and win one for the Grabowskis.

I decided to get cocky. A guy at the diner I frequent said "care to bet? I'll take the Colts and give you the spread". I responded "F the spread, I'll take the Bears and give you the 7". Man did that get in his head. He backed up big time and didn't even bet. F the Colts, game day baby in ~20 hours! I am ready!

Doubt I'll be online tomorrow so I wish you all the best!

This is the peak and the highest point of my life in general. The Super Bowl is here. The past two weeks have been intense. Filled with bliss, gratitude, and pure joy. But also included panic, nervousness, and nightmares. I am both scared and confident. An oxymoron? Yes, but its the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl, which in my entire lifetime has also been an oxymoron.

There is no tomorrow. There is no next year. There is Super Bowl Sunday and the pinacle of my unwavering love for my Bears.

God speed to you all tomorrow. Go Bears.

Tonight I was returning from my supply-gathering mission, and the sky was a clear indigo, with a band of deep orange at the horizon. It was beautiful. Prepare for hellfire, Peyton. They're not saying, "Boo," they're saying, "Oooooooh, that must have hurt like a BITCH!"

A first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Chicago Bears fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they are Bears fans too. Not really knowing what a Bears fan was, but wanting to be liked by their teacher, their hands fly into the air.

There is, however, one exception. Susie has not gone along with the crowd.

The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. "Because I'm not a bears fan" she reports.

"Then," asks the teacher," what are you?"

"I'm an Indianapolis Colts fan!" boasts the little girl. The teacher asks Susie why she is a Colts fan. "Well, my Dad and Mom are Colts fans, so I'm a Colts fan too" she responds.

"That's no reason!" the teacher says "What if your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot. What would you be then?"

Susie smiles and says, "Then I'd be a Chicago Bears fan!

Was that what you said to make yourself feel better when everybody used to rip on you for being a Colts fan?

The Manning name is synonymous with lovable loser. Peyton's still got plenty of choking to do before he goes into the Hall as the NFL's greatest ever pitchman.

Tomorrow is the day!

How do people keep blaming 'Wreck' when he was hardly ever on the field?

OK, so when he WAS, he wasn't very good, but there were 10 other guys out there with him... (or were there)?
