In Hibernation?

Saturday, March 3, 2007 | Jeff

Jeff: Hi, everybody. My name is Jeff and I'm a Bears fan. It's been about one month since I last watched Sportscenter.

All: Hi, Jeff.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to announce my return to DaBearsBlog and apologize for the bitter, angry Jeff. That Jeff is dead...long live Jeff!

Here's some thoughts on the opening of Free Agency yesterday:

1. The Bears are right to stay the hell out of it. When Nate Clements becomes the richest defensive player in the history of the sport, the apocalypse can't be far behind. Nate Clements? Who's next, Walt Harris?

2. The Dre Bly trade is not a win for Detroit because Tatum Bell stinks and he's always hurt. Outside of Shaun Rogers and Roy Williams, Dre was the best player ON THAT TEAM. Now he's gone to Denver where - very quietly I might add - they have Dre and Champ at the two corner spots. That's the best pair of corners in the league and it isn't close.

3. Hey Jamal Lewis is a free agent! Anyone? Anyone? Going once...

4. I agree with jdawg when he says playmaker is the key word for the Bears in this draft. Des Clark is darn good tight end but he doesn't scare teams in the middle of the field and he can't pull a corner out wide. I hate Miami tight ends but Greg Olsen doesn't seem to be a moron (Winslow) or a dick (Shockey). If the Bears are serious...make a deal, move up and get him.

More to come...good to see you all again.

I'm still trying to figure out what Jerry and Lovie are looking for, any clues?

Yes Megan, they are looking for any clues whatsoever, since they have none.

Jeff, I do agree with you about staying out of the early stages of free agency, as the money being spent is outrageous. If Nate Clements is the highest paid defensive player in history, something is terribly out of whack in the valuation of players. Good luck to the Bears chances of signing Lance Briggs.

There are still some good players out there that can be had at more reasonable prices. The best deals are done after all the obvious players are signed to enormous and rich contracts.

I like your thought of playmakers. This Bears team certainly doesn't have enough of those, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Speed and talent....lets go get it!

Hey Jeff,

Remember when Mora uttered the now famous, "playoffs?!" that's a frequent sound bite on sports radio? Stick that word in Angelo's mouth and change it to "move up?!" and you've got an idea of how likely that is.

I think they look at this draft as thin on TE's, QB's and RB's. They think they don't need two out of those three. Olsen's stock is moving up because he ran the 40 a whole 1/10th of a second faster than anticipated. So, goodbye to Mr. Olsen.

Lest we forget, something was lost in the hand-wringing over Lovie’s extension (that sentence sounds a little blue, doesn’t it?), Lovie agreed that Hester needs to get more touches on offense. So -- you know what? We just drafted the best play maker in the 2007 draft, with the Hester selection in 2006.

He gone shall line up in the slot, in the backfield or split out. Defensive coordinators will at first think they just farted, and then realize, to their horror, that it was something else.

I love the idea of using Hester on O. I also like the idea of giving Rex another weapon or two on offense, because to be honest, I believe that's the only way he'll succeed more. His mechanics stink, his decision-making is even worse, so I really think giving the defense another thing to think about could really help him. A quick, agile TE that can cause mismatches with the linebackers would be great here, or a pass-catching fullback.
