OPEN DEBATE: DAVID CARR

Friday, March 23, 2007 | Jeff

With David Carr now available for the taking, should the Bears be interested?

Pros:
Carr is a young with a big-time arm and will have a better offensive line in Chicago than he's ever had in his career. He'll also be re-teamed with his number one target in college, Bernard Berrian.

Cons:
In five years with Houston, he lost 56 games and never won over the team or its fans. He's got happy feet in the pocket, which most people attribute to his record-shattering sack totals.

I know what I think (yay) and what Pissed Off thinks (nay) - what do you think?

As someone who watched David Carr star at Fresno State, I truly believe the Texans gave up on him too early. The Bears should definitely sign him as a backup; he'd be a great insurance player for if/when Grossman gets gross!

Agree with Kevin. Get him. Grossman is not for sure the answer and Carr could be solid/bloom in Chicago.

Nay. I mean we have a very capable backup in Griese so unless a deal involves Griese and something for Carr. . . i say Nay

"Rex Grossman is my starting QB", that is until David Carr comes along that is. How can you not be interested? Sold!

He was just released. . . so i guess if the price is right, then we should do it

Nay,I think that would set the franchise back. he would have to learn Turner's complex offense(LOL)then he has to come up to speed learning how to run the offense with a new set of players.plus 5 mil to Griese says Carr won't come cheaper than that to Chicago

#1 I agree the Texans gave up to early on the guy learning a new system on the fly.But that orginization drop the ball 2 yrs in a row in the draft. So personell move by that team are quite comical.

I say sign him. Let Rex play and if he continues to struggle, now you have a viable long-term alternative instead of what would be perceived as nothing more than a stopgap in Griese. People don't want to turn to Griese because it's a purely negative move, it's not "we want Brian" but "we give up on Rex." It's an ackowledgment of defeat.

If you have Carr in the mix, I believe the thinking changes. Now it's: one guy didn't work out, but maybe this guy will. I think it would be a smart move by JA and Lovie if only to save them some face if Rex falters again next year.

ORTON FOR PRESIDENT!!

Nay.
This would be a stupid move and signal the Bears desire to start over yet again at the QB position with a guy who has a shakier track record than they're current Qb.
You would also have to dump Griese for sure, and mabey Orton. We're not going to repeat as division champs by bringing in a guy off the street.
PS David Carr has been awful his entire career.

I can't believe that Texas (of all teams) would give up on a guy with a big league arm like Carr. There must be something we don't know here.
Taking Carr and releasing Orton wouldn't save much money, and would inspire a QB controversy in the Windy area. Lovie wouldn't turn to Griese even when Rexzilla was stinking up the field, so who knows what would be enough to get him to try Carr ?
It is SO tempting, though. Like to have a crystal ball and know if we are going to get good Rex or bad Rex. Like that line from Wag the Dog: "There is no difference between good flan and bad flan".

piffle, er, I mean nay

Carr is not a leader and did not get loyalty form his teammates. Plus, with the o-line he had he'll be suffering post-traumatic-stress disorder for the rest of his career. His footwork reminds me of Sammy Davis Jr. back in the rat pack days, or that dance Steve Martin used to do but with a football in his hands.

Rex will be better next year, I'm betting. I year older, wiser, you know the drill.

Yay. I think that he would be a better back-up then Greise, and I think he may help Grossman be better.

as tempting as he is, pass. We need to lock down an O-line and if we do that well, Bad Rex will make far fewer starring roles in the highlight reels.

I like Carr, but it's just not the right time for out team to be shopping the QB market.

Well gentlemen, I should be leaving for the hospital here sometime between the next couple of hours and 24 hours. My wife is expecting our first child and the contrations have started. Wish me, my wife and unborn son well. (Cade will be his name, and it has absolutely nothing to do with McNown, just liked the name). Its getting exiting, I will talk again to you all soon.

By the way, I do say nay on him, Grossman is the future and for you Sean and kevin who think Texans gave up on Carr too quickly (for GODs sake its been 5 years, grossmans played one full season, talk about giving up too early!!) Thanks Max, and Coxy I know your with us. Thanks Jeff, glad to make another appearance in your lead blog.

jdawg makes an excellent point about Carr's relationship with teammates. Rex on the other hand has a great relationship with his teammates who all stand behind him. Case in point this past week Grossman was in Baltimore to recieve the Ed Block Courage award as voted on by teammates to the player who overcomes adversity and inspires the locker room.
Grossman will make great strides this year as most qb's do in they're 2nd full season as the guy. And as Po'd mentioned Carr had 5 years and is a bust.
PS Congrats to Po'd on the new arrival, our numbers grow!!

congrats PO'd

Speaking from experience, the days go by slowly but the years go by fast. You'll blink and they'll be up and out so enjoy them while you can (even when you want to strangle them).

PO'd you better not get soft on us after having a kid. I still want that anger that you bring with every post.

Nay on Carr. Bringing him in does not make sense. Its Grossman or Griese. The only good thing that would come out of bringing him in would be the dance off he and Grossman could do in the pocket during preseason drills.

I'll throw in my congrats to PO'd and Mrs. PO'd (who we know is the one doing all the hard work). (Hope you keep reading this thread, there's already a new one). I have 3, they are the best thing going. On your way out, you made a great comment - talk about giving up on people - the Texans took 5 years before giving up. It is hard to believe that Matt Schaub is anything different than David Carr - another untested youngster who will also require the basic tools of his trade - i.e. OFFENSIVE LINE - to have any chance at success. Houston has been the worst-run franchise over the last five years (although it's hard to beat Matt Millen's crew).

I actually changed my mind and think that there's probably not room on the franchise for all three of these guys, unless he came really cheap, and why would he? My guess is the Bears are going to sign some project QB in the later rounds and cut Kyle Orton. But Rex has this year to prove himself and Griese has this year to prove that he is a worthy insurance plan. If neither work, then it's a lost year and #1 priority for next year.

I'm praying for the health of mother and child, PO'd. Let us know!

Yes, congrats to PO'd...and I used to like the name Cade until a certain PAC-10 QB came along.

Anyways, David Carr...why don't we just call up Akili Smith and see what he's doing these days? Even if we were in the market for the QB, which we are not, I don't think I'd want him.

With that said, I will resupport Rex, since that seems to be a minority view. If Rex has a bad year this year, then he won't be resigned. But, I would expect him to have a ProBowl season next year. He has all the skill sets and leadership qualities. The draft will bring in some young talent (a TE please), another year with Moose, B-Twice, Bradley, and Rashied...I feel like this will be the year we put it all together and seal the deal.
