Two big stories emerge from yesterday:
1. There are reports that the Bears will trade Lance Briggs to the Redskins for a first-round swap, giving the Bears the sixth pick in this year's draft.
2. The Bears open in a nationally televised game at San Diego, which is arguably their most difficult game of the season.
I don't much care about the schedule but I will say this about the Briggs deal: MAKE IT...but try and snag a later pick as well. Lance doesn't want to play here so give him his wish. This move would enable the Bears to acquire Michigan DT Alan Branch and form one of the most fearsome sets of defensive tackles in the game. Not only that but Brady Quinn might be on the board too. Intrigue thy name is quarterback!
Anyway, this would make Day One of the draft a hell of a lot more fun. And isn't fun the thing?
#2 Al in WI said . . .Jeff, completely agree with you. Make this deal, try to squeeze something else out of it, but the deal needs to be made. Now as for the player to be drafted....I think that the Bears would consider trading down, grabbing Greg Olsen, and hopefully get another high pick to snag a LB to replace Briggs.
Of course, I'd be for moving up and getting Calvin Johnson.

#3 Coxy said . . .Have to agree, make the deal. I'd hate to see the D get broken up a bit but at the same time the #6 pick is pretty valuable. And I don't really want to have to deal with money grubber Briggs that much any more.

#4 beardown1982 said . . .Later Briggs...Good luck with London Fletcher next to ya.

#5 Da Coach said . . .They need to trade Briggs at this point. There is no salvaging this relationship anymore. Let him get his money in Washington...in the end, he deserves the cash because he is a great player. I won't be at all sorry for him if the 'Skins stink up the joint again though, next year.
As bad as Rex can be at times...he has absolutely no playmakers at wide receiver...Bernard catches deep balls for big plays and that is it...and having a playmaker like Calvin Johnson would be huge. That won't happen though. I bet he is gone by the #6 pick. And yes, knowing the Bears, they will trade down for more picks anyways knowing their history. Unless of course they have serious doubts about Rex. (don't we all! Bears have seemed content though) Maybe they will consider Quinn if available. I don't think they would want to pay that kind of money though. Very doubtful.Either way, it will make draft day a lot of fun. With the early 2nd round pick as well.
March 27, 2007
#6 Mike said . . .Lets do it, wish though they somehow could get away with not having to part with their first round pick. The 6th pick in the draft could definitley be an impact player and help us this year. This years draft could get very interesting all of a sudden.

#7 craig said . . .YES! Brady to the Bears! That would be like my wildest dreams coming true.
March 27, 2007
#8 jdawg said . . .agreed on all points. trade him. try to squeeze something else out of it.
March 27, 2007
#9 Coxy said . . .fuck, the only Brady I want playing for the Bears has the first name of Tom.
All the bitching and moaning about "our time is now" and then wanting a rookie QB?
Now, I live in Louisville and Okoye is the real deal, plus he's only 19. He still may grow. The guy's a monster and has his head screwed on straight.
We need more guys like that.
March 27, 2007
#10 Shamen said . . .Yea I agree about Okoye. The kid was 16 as a frosh and still tore it up. He is a leader and a stud. I definitely prefer him at DT over Branch. Branch is 6'5" though and heavier which is enticing. But overall I like Okoye more.
The interior D-Line would be nice with Harris, Okoye or Branch, and the Jailbird. I'm salivating.
Get the trade done.
March 27, 2007
#11 Coxy said . . .Trading Briggs for the #6 pick is a best-case scenario. If we don't trade him, he sits for 10 games and then plays his 6 games to get credit for the season so he can become a free agent.
Who to pick? If Calvin Johnson is available we *have* to take him. As BD said, the Bears need a playmaker outside. However, I think he doesn't fall past #4, and maybe not past #2.
I'm from Madison, and let me tell you, if Joe Thomas is available we want him. He's a decent run blocker, an outstanding pass blocker and a real team guy. Who doesn't think we could stand to give Rex a little more time in the pocket?

#12 jeff said . . .http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/314384,CST-SPT-bear27.article
Isn't there a hole in this plan if the Bears decide to sit him the last game of the season?

#13 Al in WI said . . .calvin won't be there but boy has this trade sparked the site. i'm actually excited about 07.
March 27, 2007
#14 Green Lantern said . . .Beardown '82 makes an excellent point about the Bears WR core people need to keep in mind. The chance at Johnson would be the dream senario. Absent that I wouldn't mind picking up extra 2nd round picks for dropping down and still having a shot at Dwayne Jarrett or Greg Olsen in the middle of the round.
March 27, 2007
#15 Max said . . .This is a no brainer for the Bears if the Skins will do it (and it is such a classic Dan Snyder move)
Get rid of your problem child and move up to get some elite talent that is so hard to add?
If Thomas is there you HAVE to take him with that spot. (assuming that Calvin Johnsons is gone, which he will be). This OLine is good, but old, and giving a stud LT a year to develop before starting would be fantastic, and provide much needed depth (John St. Clair anyone??)
If the Bears end up with a draft pick in the top 10, I'll be at the draft. see you there, NYC bears fans? Let's hope this trade goes through.
March 27, 2007
#16 Megan said . . .NO BRADY. . . and while this move makes me excited. . . it also kinda makes me nervous. I like Jerry, but before Tommie Harris, his first round choices have been sketchy. He is really good at later round picks and finding gems (Hester). But some, Haynes? Colombo? and if Mike Brown comes back, where does that put Manning? And I love Rex but this year is his make or break year. . . all first round guys.
However, I might cry if we get Calvin Johnson. . . partly because hes insane and i would be so happy. . . and partly cause it would probably signify the end of the Rashied Era. which ill accept. . . just not gracefully.
March 27, 2007
#17 Green Lantern said . . .I would be so psyched if we got Thomas from UW... he would make such a GREAT addition to the team..
March 28, 2007
#18 JB said . . .word is that angelo told the redskins "no thanks, and we'd appreciate this not being made so public next time, jerkasses".
sounds like the bears are planning on calling briggs' bluff that he won't forfeit half a Mill for every game he sits out.
I would have done this trade. You rid yourself of this situation/player, get a draft spot where you can add impact talent (even if Thomas and Johnson will almost certainly both be gone), and you can move on having had a positive offseason, not having to worry about the 10% chance the briggs is actually crazy enough to sit out the season
oh well....
March 28, 2007
#19 Phil from SATX said . . .Green Lantern, I would have jumped at the opportunity to take the deal as well...which is why I'm not an NFL exec. This is posturing. Of course they are interested in dealing Briggs, and of course that is a nice offer they just received for him. But time is on our side. Clearly we've dealt with the 'skins before and we are taking our time and allowing for full compensation.
JA is a pretty savvy guy, and I think next week we will see Briggs moved for something better than this initial offer. We all want things to happen quickly, but patience a key virtue in this game. Let's wait it out and see if we can move him before the draft for a 1 and a 3 or 4.
When Dan Snyder falls in love with a player, he will pay a higher price, let's make him pay it.
March 28, 2007
#20 jdawg said . . .Don Pierson brings interesting analysis to this today. He says the Bears would likely NOT be interested in a #6 pick, as it would come with $15MM in guaranteed money, or double what they are committing to Briggs this year. He says they would be interested in trading down for more picks, but Redskins have been looking at shopping their #6 pick in similar fashion, to no avail, possibly because the players available this year at #6 aren't worth going nuts over.
Then Morrissey points out the problem of caving in to Briggs + agent and the terrible precedent it would set - impacting not just the future use of the franchise tag but any disgruntled players who are under contract.
So the dream of a #6 pick, good as that sounds, may be just that. If no moves are made and Briggs does what he says he will do by sitting out the first 10 (highly unlikely) then let the wrath of Chicago fall on him - he may become the most villified character in Bears history. I wouldn't want a seat next to him on the bench when he does decide to show up - I've seen Soldier Field fans in action when they're pissed, and it ain't pretty.
March 28, 2007
#21 jeff said . . .The trade would suck because there are four special players in the draft and we'd be picking sixth. The signing bonus would be close to Benson's which would fuck up the salary cap. The skins have been trying to trade down this first round pick but have found no takers. I wonder if there is an offensive player on the skins Angelo would like?

#24 Phil from SATX said . . .by the way, i HATE when people say "there are only four special players in this draft" how many were there last year? the bears found two and neither close to the first ten picks (hester, anderson)
March 28, 2007
#25 Midway Monster said . . .Good point Jeff, and it underscores how this current brain trust seems very adept at finding values lower - so why take the risk (and more importantly, expense) of the really low picks - unless that one pick can change the franchise.
Those who were upset at the low value of the TJ trade lamented not getting extra picks. Maybe this is the time to generate those picks, especially since Lovie's strategy is at least somewhat unique is his willingness to let rookies play from Day 1. If you think you have a comparative advantage in your scouting and ability to find the good value players, the only way to leverage that is to have more lower picks, not fewer higher picks.
BTW, if Briggs is traded, how critical does finding a replacement become, and how high do you think you need to go to find a good enough one? That's what bugs me about the Briggs deal - we were already set there, and if we're going to end up trading him, it seems to just create a hole that needs filling, and a hole that might be larger than the compensation we receive for it (like just moving up in the draft).
March 28, 2007
#26 jeff said . . .Read online today :Multiple sources confirmed Tuesday that the Washington Redskins have made a formal trade offer to the Bears for the Pro Bowl linebacker, offering a swap of first-round picks that would put the Bears near the top of the first round at No. 6 overall for Briggs and the No. 31 selection.
COOL!

#27 jdawg said . . .replacing briggs is crucial, without question. but stacking the middle of the defensive to keep bodies off brian is just as crucial. i think the bears will look for someone at 37.
March 28, 2007
#28 Ted in IA said . . .Let me make this clear, and its my fault for not stating it clearly in the first place. What I meant is that there are four picks that are in the "can't miss" category. We have as much of a chance getting a very good player in this year's draft with the 20th pick as the 6th, but if we pick 6th we pay much more money for that pick.
If we're going to pay 6th pick money we should just tell the Redskins to shove it and sign Briggs (once we wash his mouth out with soap).
March 28, 2007
#29 Lee mc cann said . . .The mess with Briggs will probably not end with either side feeling too good about it... BUT... one thing is certain, if the Bears let Lance/SlimeHaus run over them, they WILL have much more trouble signing other players he represents, Harris especially. I am sure that Jerry has considered this, but let me add my "voice" to the plea to the Bears not to "cave" in to this extortion. He has a signed contract - make him play for the franchise money, or let him sit out and become valueless to any team. We all know that he will not be able to sit out the season, AND if he does, he is so stupid that we don't want him (nor should anyone else but Snyder).
