Greg Olsen.
That's your draft, ladies and gentlemen.
I have very high hopes for Dan Bazuin and Josh Beekman two or three years down the road. But when it comes to the Bears' quest for a championship in 2008, this weekend was about Greg Olsen.
The Bears now have two, young speedsters on the outside. They have a slot man who emerged in the postseason as a go-to threat. They have a seasoned veteran hungry for a title. They have arguably the best blocking tight end in the conference. Now they have THE GUY. Now they have the tight end that slides into the slot and forces defenses to change their allignments. Olsen threatens the middle of every defense in football.
Olsen makes Desmond Clark better.
Olsen makes Rex Grossman better.
Olsen makes the Bears better.
Has he picked a number yet? I got about seventy bucks burning a hole in my pocket.
#2 Max said . . .I have to agree, the first round pick is the only one likely to make a dent this season. Olsen is just a great pick all around, he was clearly the best player on the board at that spot, and feels a need for the Bears. We've had decent te's in the past, but no one as good as him.
The major contribution Olsen will make is to give the Bears a go too threat to revolve the offense around.April 30, 2007
#3 Pissed off said . . .Ok, I have to ask, what is it about the Chicago Bears and Florida QB's because we signed Chris Leak as an undrafted free agent.
I like the move. I mean its Rex, then Griese, then Orton, and then Leak, so it holds no real meaning. I just thought it was interesting.
(and Jeff, respect for giving Rashied playoff props)

#4 jeff said . . .Seriously we signed Chris Leak? If this true he and Rex will probably become buddies talking Florida football and how things went back in the day. I also hate to say it but Orton pretty much sucks. My money is on Leak making the team as third string and Orton being cut.
Also about the Olsen number thing, my guess is that he is wearing his #82 by the season opener. Either Reid will be off the team, possible the odd man out with Olsen, Dez and Gilmore? Or maybe he'll buy it or get it from Reid somehow.

#7 Decatur Staleys #7 said . . .do not forget Wolfe. He is the only player on the team that lines up behind #8 that can take it all the way. His size makes durability an issue, but he won't be getting that many snaps a game with Benson and AP there. But when he gets the ball he
could
go
all
the
way

#8 Max said . . .Maybe with Olsen,We can try the 2 TE Set on 1st down an pass(Are you listening Ronny!)Instead of the run 1st & 2nd down,throw 3rd.
The play action passing should be beautiful this season.

#9 Midway Monster said . . .Ok, but does Walker have a shot at making the team?? I mean Benson, AP, and Wolfe. . . can we afford to take on a 4th RB?
It should at least be a fun battle to watch through training camp and preseason between Wolfe and Walker.

(rehab)PS - seems to me the Vikes made the best moves if thei rbest pan out.

#11 Phil from SATX said . . .Gentlemen, sorry I have been awol. I never really get into all the predraft hype every year. I always assume that the GMs know more than I so I take their word for it after the first round.
As an aside, how about the Pats making a solid move towards being in the super bowl for the next three to four years. Incredible offseason and they get a couple first round picks next year.

#12 Pissed off said . . .Al, let's not make premature assumptions on the rest of this draft. It sounds like the BT was targeting these later round guys all the way. Not to beat a dead horse, but I don't believe there was one name we fans collectively knew about and were excited about last year and we got Hester, Danieal Manning and Mark Anderson. So Garrett Wolfe, Dan Bazuin, Michael Okwo, these are guys we may very well be ending our posts with with next year (ala Max).
But I totally agree with the sentiment expressed here by Jeff and all, that Greg Olsen does define this draft. Can't wait to see him lining up in blue and orange.
The obsession with Florida QB's is quite bizarre. However, Orton has outlived his usefulness and is now turning green and moldy. So we might as well have someone that the coaches still feel has developmental upside. What's the skinny on Leak?

#13 Zac Parker said . . .I'm not going to take Leak too seriously but really, he should make the roster over Orton, at least for mobility reasons. He had some success, Ok a lot of success, he led the team to a championship, that counts for something.
Regarding the Pats, Moss will be a perfect fit. If there was a team out there that would keep the guy happy, its the Pats, no question. Randy needs his team to be winning to be motivated and the Pats will always win at least 10 games.

#14 Pissed off said . . .When has there ever been a great, I mean GREAT in capital letters Florida Quarterback. I don't know but i look at patterns and we seem to think that Florida is the answer. But really we draft more and more terrible quarterbacks. Leak and Grossman are great college quarterbacks, but they are terrible NFL quarterbacks.
What else do I have to say, the truth hurts sometimes (Ozzie Guillan).May 1, 2007
#15 DTB said . . .Zac Parker, you are an idiot. You dont know shit about Bears football. Your Rex comment doesnt deserve a response but I'll humor you anyway. Dont put a blanket statement on someone after one full season. Did you know Rexs stats last year were better than Favres in his first full year? I bet you didnt because you are ignorant. Farvre turned out to be pretty good last time I checked and if Rexs numbers are comparable, I think he'll be a damn good NFL QB. Dont come post stupid shit here making blanket statements about things you know nothing about without doing some research.

#16 Zac said . . .Missing the point here team. If Leak is developmental, what do you think of dropping Griese to open up cap space, moving Orton into the number two role and letting Leak lead the scout team. If folks around Halas hall praise Orton for what he did preparing our defense last year then why would he not be able to handle the reigns as our backup? I personally think that Orton gives us the same game that Griese does. Only with a better arm. Dont forget, he won 10 games as a starter and as a rookie no less. In less words, fuck Griese and his annual 5 million dollar contract. Free that money and give it to players that are responsible for our victories. There's three players that I can think of off the top of my head that deserve it and have contracts that are up at years end; Darth Vasher, Peanut and Rex the wonderQB.

Hey Pissed off,
First, you didn't answer my question? You didn't name me any quarterbacks from FLORIDA. Second, How are you even putting Rex Grossman in the same category with Bret Farvre a future hall of famer. When Rex has 10 great successful years then we can have this talk. Yes it was Rex Grossman's first full year, i'll give you that but did you even listen to any of the press conferences that Rex Grossman spoke in. He is not a great leader. A leader isn't passive. I know he is young but you have to be confident and not have your coach bailing you out after every game. I'll give you that it was his first year, but did he do well against great defenses? Not really. I think your the ignorant one if you can't argue without getting defensive. Have some class.May 1, 2007
Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish. You are not free, however, to be an asshole. So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
