Wide Receiver? Fuck You.

Friday, April 27, 2007 | Jeff

NOTE: Tune in through the weekend for a running commentary on the Bears (and the rest of the NFC North) in this year's draft. Without further adieu, PISSED OFF weighs in...

Being there has been quite a bit of talk on this site as well as some national ones regarding the Bears drafting a WR with their first pick I wanted to get in on the action with my opinion, which after having read my blogs for the past few months, you all know is the right one.

Moose is still the same guy who led the NFL in TDs and yards 3 years ago. Three years from now, maybe even two, is when I start getting leery about his diminishing skills, but not now, not yet. It's our system, compared to what Carolina's system did, that isn’t giving Moose the league leading numbers we want to see.

We need to face it that we will never have a system that produces the league's top WR. I don’t worry about Moose....if you put Chad Johnson or Marvin Harrison or anyone else in Moose's slot with the Bears they would have similar numbers....it's the system not the guy. I don’t care if we had Jerry Rice in his prime, he wouldn't be a league leader in any category playing in this offense.

As Rex progresses, which to the dismay of many I of course think he will, the numbers will get better for our wide outs but still no where near league leading. Would I love for that to be proven wrong?......absolutely. I've said it before and I'll say it again; it was his first full season in the system (first full season period).

There is only one scenario where I would want us to use the first pick on a WR.....see below. Marty Booker or some other slappy retread is not the answer. I think we have a good group. I've stated my case for Moose, Rash will obviously improve over time, if Bradley stays healthy we have seen flashes of how good he can be, and Berrian is a speedster and a deep threat with great concentration and hands. We saw that amazing catch by Berrian in the playoffs against Seattle. Isn't is also great to think back to that handful of Berrian TD's that went for about 50 yards each.

Anyone can make a case for drafting a WR but I think we have more pressing needs. I'm not going to go thru them because we've all speculated the past three months about what we need or don’t need and they're all valid points but wide out is not the most pressing, I can assure you. That being said, I am a firm believer in drafting the best available player in the first round for sure and maybe even second round depending on how deep the draft is. If the Brain Wizards think that guy is a WR, then so be it.

Saturday is going to be a great day!

I agree about the WR situation in the draft. I honestly cannot see us drafting a WR. B-Square, Moose, and Bradley are a pretty good core of WR's. Not to mention R.Davis had a great season as well.

It's nice to see a Rex supporter for once, I'm sure I'll be visiting this site everyday now. I just came across it bored at work. Nice Work! I think we should draft on the defensive side. The Briggs situation is getting out of control, and I think we need help at Defensive Tackle as well.

As Always,

Bear Down!

If you continually check in you'll see that I'm a huge Rex guy. A lot of fans want him out cuz I guess they think Greise or Orton are better, its as though we're used to having stellar QBs around here. He's the best we've had in years (probably about 13 of them) and I think he'll be good in a contract year.

I used to have a little rant that I'd post about Rex everytime someone bashed him, I wont post it though cuz I know somewhere Phil, Midway, Mike and Jeff are all are cringing at the thought of having to read it again. At any rate it involves Rex being shipped to Zimbabwae.

PO'd, I'm glad you chimed in. You are my favorite blogger to read because of your anger. I like our WR's a lot, and I'm not saying Moose is done, I totally agree with your point about the system, but more speed can't hurt at all. If we can give Rex another weapon at TE or WR, that's all I ask (and of course I lean to TE).

About Rex...I've been supporting him his whole career. It's easy to blame the QB when things go wrong...and I think Rex is a stud. I look for him to come back this year with at minimum a Pro Bowl year, but I want to start the Rex for MVP campaign '07 right now. Anyone want to join?

Here is why: This is Rex's team now. Last year I still think the team looked to TJ. Rex survived a brutal and unfair attack by the entire sports world last year...people that don't know anything about football were asking me if we were going to get a new QB. If he showed that kind of strength then, imagine how battle tested he will be now. And finally, he has skills (a great deep ball and throws that square in best in the league), weapons (+1 after tomorrow hopefully), and the best defense in the league (think fully healthy team putting up sick numbers) that got better in the off season with Arch & Adams in the fold.

I'm driving the bus, PO'd has rights to shotgun if he wants it...the rest of you let me know if you're piling in.

PO'd: thanks for not reposting the Rex kool-aid. I would love him to be great this year. I hope he is. I was very much in favor of leaving him last season. If he starts to suck, I will be the first in line asking for patience, but if they start 2-3, I'm not sure how patient a team can be after going to the SB...

I also agree WR isn't a pressing need, but if we draft one, I'm not going to be concerned until game 9 or so when you can actually start to judge the draft. How did last year's draft look to everyone at that point this year? Mark Anderson and Hester playing crazy good and Manning and Runnels playing well and the rest of the draft picks were hurt (wonder if Tyler Reed will be any good who I didn't mention because I have no idea what he did last year). Holy crap, can you imagine if Dusty/Williams both produce this year? That would be a high quality draft. I hope we repeat this year...

Speaking of draft grades, check this out:

They wanted TEs and WRs last year. The ones they list are laughable.

JB, I think we have plenty of speed with Berrian, Rash and Bradley at WR, I would lean more towards a TE too, we need speed there. I'm on that bus man, Pro Bowl is possible but MVP is a little bit "pie in the sky" but I'm on that bus! This is Rex's team. Man I love that post.

There should be no such thing as an actual national sports writer. These mock drafts are really starting to irritate my still chapped balls, lingering from the way the season ended. These writers dont have a clue. I saw somewhere that the second round pick was going to be used on a corner. An f'ing corner!?!? And in agreement with PO'd, a WR with the first pick?!?!? These jerkoffs dont watch games, have no idea of the personel that we already have and dont fully understand the system we run here. National writers assume that since Rex posted my first semester GPA in a handfull of games, that a rookie WR is going to a be an end all fix all. They also see one long touchdown reception by 87 (cant say his name) in the SB, we automatically need another DB. Give me a break.
But to my actual point. Longevity is a concept that they will never fully understand. The fact that Jerry and Lovie will be here for the next 5 years ensures that this draft will be set to solidify the rusted out parts of our team. Here's to drafting the next wave of bruisers up front. Give me at least 3 fat, ugly, snot-bubbling O-linemen this weekend, give me a linebacker from no-where state that runs a 4.5 and lastly a couple of guys that have no problem throwing their body into a wedge and I am a satisfied Bears fan. And to the next person that says draft a tight end, a swift kick in the balls. Did anyone see how those tigh ends from a year ago produced? Shit, absolutely nothing. Des was a top ten tight end last year and n0-one can dispute that. So screw your skill players! Go Rex, go Moose and Bear Down, happy draft weekend to all.

that great catch berrian had in the playoffs was against New Orleans, not Seattle. But I agree completely.

First, I may not be all that active this month on the site. I have a golf tournament at the end of the month and my basics are rusty.

Now for the post at hand: A WR. No... We win by defense first, then special teams, then offense. That said, like any draft, the matrix of permutations of a pick that is not the top 10, really results in "select the best athlete at the moment". Pick who is best, trade after the draft.

But... just maybe... that 6th round is still an option from the Skins.

PS: Hey Bearfan34: When Pissed Off says he used to "have a little rant" that translates into he totally lost it for a good day or two :)

Give me a window seat on the bus. Rex took more abuse than any young QB deserves. I would love to see Posluszny in the Navy and Orange because I think he would be a good fit with the team and get big love in the city, but he will probably be gone by then.

PO'd, true to form. I couldn't agree with you more, we don't NEED a WR. Don't waste a pick on WR!
Anywho, from where I am, it's a matter of just a coupla hours 'til draft time. "get it on!"
