Jay Mariotti isn't a very good writer. He never has been. He gets press for the silly things he says not for the interesting way he says them. Now - in his current column - Mariotti has climbed again atop his high moral steed and castigated the behavior of the newest Bear for his actions as an eighteen year-old.
Yes, "G-Reg" Greg Olsen was part of the Miami rap song so many found disgusting. Those so many? Fucking old people! Every single person that I know (without a single exception) not only took no offense to the song but they found it downright hysterical.
But Mariotti says the Bears don't need someone with questionable morals now. And we all know singing offensive-to-Jay lyrics is the same thing as rape. Jay is a douche bag and it is certainly time to stop putting his from-the-pulpit trash on the pages of the Sun-Times.
Why does Jay write this shit? Look at his track record as an actual sports writer. Six years ago he yelped and yepled about how the Bears should have taken Daunte Culpepper. Then he did the same for a year about Byron Leftwich. When these players turned out to be nothings, he goes on a moral rampage through the Chicago sports scene. The real problem is Jay doesn't know anything about sports. And before he ruins the emotional well-being of a soon-to-be Chicago sports star, I'd rather the Sun-Times just say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
The paper across town has turned Sun-Times sports into a joke and Mariotti is the reason why.

#3 jamel said . . .Jay is a knee-jerk contrarian, which is to say, completely boring and unoriginal. I'm not even clicking the link, because you know what he's going to say and why he's saying it. The whole world is in love with the Bear's #1 draft pick, and rightfully so, and that alone is a reason for Jay Jay the Jet Plane to decide there's a reason not to love the pick. But what a stretch, even for him, especially when Greg's being cast as the anti-Shockey in terms of character and maturity.
I remember years ago when the concensus always was the Sun-Times' sports pages were better than the Tribune's. Those times are long gone. You're a joke, Mariotti. Your words don't belong on the same pages as a great like Rick Telander. Go away.

#4 Da Coach said . . .It's cause Jay and Slezak are fucking each other-- Carol is very upset and finds it offensive to women-- since Jay just got off he was forced to write this article. Amazing what men do after sex-- this is the only reasoning I can put together-- this or Jay is a complete Fucktard douchebag--

Until this morning I had no clue about this tape and thats how it should have remained. What good does it do to bring this subject up after 4 years and on top of it all compare it to the events that took place with Tank and Manning Jr last year. Marriotti is a clown and always will be!!

#6 Megan said . . .Who the fuck cares? Seriously! Jay is an idiot, Jeff didnt need to blog about it for us to know that. He writes crap and gets by on being controversial. I dont read the Sun Times, I dont read Jay. I dont even watch "around the horn" when he's on cuz he makes the other guys look like geniuses cuz he's so full of shit. No need to preach to the choir Jeff, we all know.

#7 Clarence said . . .I have to agree with PO'd on this one. Jay is a drama queen, in it for the attention/to see how much controversy he can cause. The less attention we pay to him the less effect he will have. No sense in blogging about a well-known-misinformed, wel-lestablished idiot.

#8 Al in WI said . . .Unless, PO'd and Megan, we can: get him fired so new blood can get a chance at legit sportswriting, use this as a therapeutic means of venting our frustrations to avoid physical violence, or make JM cry himself to sleep every night?

#9 Megan said . . .I think this is a legit post, and I couldn't agree more with it. This guy is a wannabe who is so PC he has never spent anytime in a locker room or hanging out with real guys. Just look back at how he and his politically correct crowd at espn reacted to being called a homo last year. That showed two things; one he's never been in a locker room and doesn't understand locker room talk or humor, and two that everyone at espn has to have the same take on every issue.
Just look at the over the top Rex bashing last year!
I believe there is a website out there called jaythejoke.com. Good stuff.May 1, 2007
#10 Hino said . . .Al, Jay, all you are doing is perpetuating his incompetence. Perhaps if the people who actually read the Sun-Times wrote letters of disgust about Fae-Ray-Jay's lack of ability, then we might get somewhere. Bitching about it here is merely adding to his fodder. This is the crap he feeds off of, stop throwing him marshmellows! You know he sucks, I know he sucks, do you know ANYBODY who doesn't think he sucks?? So why the hell are we even giving him a second thought?

#11 Phil from SATX said . . .Letters to the Sun-Times have been written and ignored. The Tinky man needs to be publicly outed for being the idiot he is. Unfortunately since the Sun-Times doesn't listen the blogs appear to be the best bet. Fire the F***tard.

That's strong girl!
Just a note on draft coverage - has anyone mentioned how maddening it was to have the Bears dealing their pick at #37 and the stupid talking heads not even acknowledging it was occurring until way later, and then as an afterthought? I didn't see any analysis on the Bears by these guys at all. Berman drives me nuts anyway. I thought it was very poor coverage this year.

I noticed the same thing on draft day. I was gearing up for the selection left to grab a drink come back to sit down and SD is on the clock....I think to myself WTF just happened and yet no explanation until after SD made their pick. Berman is another one I can't stand and that stiff Keyshawn looked so out of place up there. No chemistry at all. NFL network did a much better job with the draft analysis.

#16 Max said . . .People. . . I hate to break it to ya, but Jay Marriotti is not going to be fired anytime soon.
I do not like him. I think his articles are stupid, i think he is dumb and his opinoins are ridiculous, but here is the key thing: People read his articles. Whether it is because they disagree with it or whether they are just looking over the sports page, or becaue of the potential controversy he might start, (like the whole Ozzie Guillen situation) people read his articles.
And you know what that does?? It sells newspapers. That is what the Sun Times is in the business of doing and Jay helps them do it. So dont get your hopes up that he is being fired anytime in the foreseeable future.

#17 Pissed off said . . .And yeah, Berman and those guys were terrible. Everytime Chris Mortenson started a sentence, he would have to turn to Kiper because he would either lose his train of thought or he would realize he had no idea what he was talking about.
And the whole trade situation was infuriating. Ya think they could have at least mentioned what had happened and who got what between us and the Chargers. But no. Useless.

#18 jdawg said . . .Over the years I've gotten so used to just tuning into ESPN to watch the draft, back to the days of before NFLN. So I watched ESPN but later I went out with some friends and they had the NFLN coverage on at the establishment and I must say that next year I will be watching NFLN instead of ESPN. They do a better job.

#19 Megan said . . .It sounds cliche, but the best thing to do is ignore him.
After the SB loss I had no reason to listen to SCR670 anymore. I soon realized how much better I felt. Except for a few good anylists on at night their line-up is a bunch of boring morons. Marriotti bored the hell out of me so I quite reading him about 3 years ago. He's like the Anne Coulter of Sports -- just say some outrageous shit and see what kind of buzz it gets.
There's enough good analysis out there to keep you busy, plus the Bulls are getting ready to take on the Pistons!
I think Marriotti just needs to get with that old Grace Jones single:

Park it in between.May 1, 2007

I'm sure he not invited,or called on if he's allowed in any locker room in Chicago to ask any questions.
So all he left with is these boring attacks on Chicago sports teams.
I hope he not for any reason help selling 1 paper for the Sun Times.
I like to think if your a local sports writer,Your also a closet fan hoping to see your local teams suceed.
Like his fellow hack writer friend(Rosenblah)would say"Your plane is boarding" An crashing soon after.
May the Football Gods allow 1 out of bound play to happen, where he smashed on the bottom of a pile up.
May the Baseball Gods allow 1 foul tip ball smash him in the face at ether stadium.
Or may Shaq make a diving play out of bound an land squarelly on his ass.

Good hands, below average speed, An not worth a double team on defense.
Though you wouldn't have to pay starter money for that.May 2, 2007
#24 Pissed off said . . .I too was taking a break between the Olsen pick and the number 37, and came back to see SD on the clock. Those numbnuts on the dias for ESPN were not even addressing the issue, so I went to the internet and finally the NFL Network to get the scoop. I stayed with the NFL Network after that because they seemed to be not taking themselves as seriously as the doofs at ESPN. It was more of a fun thing, the way the draft should be. It's NFLN all the way next year.
Regarding Mariotti...I simply refuse to acknowledge any media he is on, whether print or video. Rosenjerk too, from the Trib. These two try to make a living being contrarians, but it just gets tired listening to their bullshit after awhile. Do you really think either one of them are going to get anything good from the athletes as far as content goes? Doubtful. I don't necessarily need a "homer" writing the columns that I read, but the Bears do SOME good things...although you wouldn't know it by reading the pablum from these two hacks.May 2, 2007
#25 Phil from SATX said . . .I'm not so sure we shouldnt try to get Keyshawn. He's got at least one good year left and if he can help us win a super bowl this year, which is the goal, then lets get him. ESPN says he might retire cuz no one is going to pay him what he wants. He's apparently only worth a little above the league minimum. He's tall as hell, can catch a lot of passes (especailly overthrown passes which Rex tends to throw) and isnt scared in traffic. We could use the veteran presence with Moose. Tall guys like that are a QBs dream. Key is 6'5" I think, and with Olsen being that tall too those are two huge targets for Rex. Look at what Eli and Plax can do in NY. Without the 6'6" Plax, Eli would have far worse numbers, he's the guy that makes Eli look good. I'd like Key and Moose and Greg to make Rex look good.
I know I was against a WR in the draft, which is different. I was hoping we'd draft more for need pretty much exactly as we did. Picking up a free agent is different. Just wanted to clear that up before someone jumps on me for endorsing Keyshawn when I said we shouldnt draft a WR. That being said I highly doubt we'll get him and I still think we have a great core anyway.

#26 mikebdot said . . .Who thinks we should have been in on the Moss bidding? I hate the fact that he's going to a great franchise. They certainly didn't pay much for him (4th round Patriots-level pick) and although he's pretty much of a selfish idiot, he's got way more left in the tank than Keyshawn.
Although free agent signing isn't done, it sure looks like the BT thinks that Berrian, Moose, Bradley and Rash are sufficient. Maybe this is based on the percentage of the pass offense they feel will be absorbed by GO. By the way, it's not too early to begin working on our nickname for Greg - GO Bot? GO Speed Racer? G-Ols really doesn't work at all. Get your creative juices flowing, let's get naming rights for our new Pro-Bowler To Be!

I am sick of Mariotti and his attitude. Is there ever an upside with this guy? Doom and gloom is all he ever writes about. Perspective and balance doesn't sell papers, I guess.
