Last season, you might remember, the District Selectman wrote our Sunday night columns each week and did a really brilliant job. The reason for this? I tend to drink a little on game day and usually can't quite see the letters on the keyboard until sometime during Cold Pizza the next morning (I know they changed the name but it'll always be Cold Pizza to me). This season we'd like to continue the tradition by announcing a THREE MAN ROTATION of guest bloggers. The reason for three is that the District realized that making a commitment to every Sunday night is difficult. Having three guys ready should only make the site stronger.
If our friends Pissed Off, Midway Monster and JB will accept the gig...welcome aboard. We have a lot of loyal readers but these guys have become year-round contributors and it only seems fitting to see their thoughts come Sunday nights this fall.
Everyone have a nice holiday weekend. With training camp only weeks away, things are about to heat up around here.

#10 Phil from SATX said . . .I have to admit, I feel more then a little slighted. Not because I am not getting a chance to write a column, we all know that I do confuse names of players/coaches, but because I did not even get a nod as a loyal reader/contributor, or at least the chance to say "No, thanks."
I am looking forward to Pissed Off, Midway Monster and JB's input. They all have more knowledge of all things football. I will be going to grad school so it is not like I will have tons of time. Just, give the female(s) of your sight a nod now and then. We could have more to say then you think.

But still, congrats to Midway, JB, and PO'd, excellent choices all! I'd like to also nominate jdawg, mikedbot and of course Max the Rashied lover (as we all are). Plus Al from WI, a relatively recent entry but always good.

#13 Midway Monster said . . .Nothing's going on, right? So no one will care as I explain that my attention has been diverted recently - our Spurs are headed to another championship. I know no one cares, but I was once a diehard MJ-era Bulls fan. I moved down here in '94 and stayed a fan through the rest of the championships (had siblings send hats and shirts for the last two) but ultimately switched allegiances when the Spurs pulled the ping pong ball to get a certain Tim Duncan while Crumbs Krause had already ruined the Bulls (has the Chicago sports world ever had as clearcut, despised and deserved villain as Jerry Krause? I wonder if he is ever the topic of conversation up there anymore). Glad to see the Bulls are coming back, but apparently not far enough. Spring in San Antonio is a bleary-eyed, no sleep, hungover season seemingly every single year with the Spurs typically going pretty deep in the playoffs or winning it all. Don't get me wrong, while I loves me some Spurs, I don't have any lack of clarity as to my true and lifelong sports allegiance.

#16 Keep Bitching (Pissed Off) said . . .I hate the Spurs. The NBA gave the Spurs this years championship by suspending Amare and Boris for game 5, and the Suns still almost won. Had the Suns won the series they would be the new champ. It must feel pretty bad to win a championship and not deserve it for the Spurs and their fans. Its a shame the Suns didnt think to send in some no-talent douche from the end of the bench to hip-check Ginobili into the scorers table to get Duncan and Parker to come running so they'd be suspended. The Spurs are dirty and are the reason I have not watched one second more of the NBA playoffs since game 6. Poppovich must have Sterns and Stu Jackcons balls in his hands.
Anyway enough basketball, this is Bears talk.

May 29, 2007
#19 Midway Monster said . . .PO'd we'd best not have a Spurs conversation. Needless to say I don't agree with anything you just said. The Spurs are one of the classiest organizations in all of sports, and the Suns are widely known inside the NBA as the whiniest, floppingest team there is. And the funniest part of that deal was that Nash's silly acting job likely cost his team a game as his less than bright teammates (Amare, I'm talking about you!) were fooled by his fake histrionics.
BUT this IS a Bears blog, I haven't forgotten. And that WASN'T a response, so no need to write back.

#22 Max said . . .It sounded like a response to me. Dont give me the generalization that "inside the NBA" the suns are known as the "floppiest" - not even a word I dont think. You dont work for the NBA or for an NBA team do you? Then you dont know whats "widely" known in the NBA, in other words, I'm not buying anything you just said. Your trying to use persuasion but you have no proof. You know what else is "widely" known is that the Spurs are the dirtiest team in the NBA and that Bowen in the dirtiest player in the NBA, he constantly takes cheap shots and he's been fined several times for them. His classic move is trying to get his foot under someone elses when they land after jumping so they twist their ankle. They have been a good team in the past, "classy" is debateable, Poppovich may have been the one who told Horry to do the hip check so it would end up exactly as it did, with suspensions to some key Suns. Even the Spurs radio announcer called it a dirty cheap shot from Cheap-shot-Bob. Yeah, your own announcer. I heard the sound bite.
You know me Phil, I cant let something stick in my craw, I will debate this to the bitter end, I am mighty passionate about it.

#23 Pissed off said . . .That, POed is one reason why you were picked as a guest blogger. Argue to the bitter end.
I no longer care about the NBA playoffs this year. Its gonna be Spurs vs Pistons and the Spurs will win in 6. Who cares? (no offense Phil) I mean, I think I am having deja vu cause i have seen this finals before. And from what I remember, it was good, hard basketball but its boring and predictable
May 29, 2007
#24 Pissed Off said . . .Agreed...I love the Suns style of BBall, I hate hard-nosed all defense slow ball. I pick Spurs in 6 as well, no question they will win it all vs Pistons. I knew they had won the title when the suspensions came down on Amare and Diaw.

#27 JB said . . .PO'd I got that from Jim Rome. Most people respect his sports knowledge. Also, the day after that incident, Rome had Josh Howard from the Mavericks on and asked him which statement was more accurate - "Spurs are the dirtiest team in the NBA" or "Suns are the whiniest team in the NBA" - he tried to demur from the question, but finally laughed and said that it was definitely the Suns quote. Bruce Bowen has been called out for his tactics, he does close up tight on players, it's how he plays defense. He is extremely irritating to other players, not unlike a former Bull named Dennis Rodman who helped them get 3 titles. About once a season, some prima donna no-championship-winning "star" comes along and starts crying about Bowen - like Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Steve Francis - and it gets some press. Better players who have won championships don't think Bruce is dirty - like Kobe, who gets Bruce on him every minute he's on the court.
The Robert Horry "cheap shot" was definitely a flagrant foul but far from the worst foul that has even happened during these playoffs. There were 18 seconds left in the game and the only play was to foul. He actually went for the charge, realized that Nash was about to go around him and lifted his forearm and nudged his hip into him. For you to even suggest Popovich went and told him to hurt Nash is asinine and evidence that you don't know anything about the team. ESPN named it the #2 franchise out of all major league sports franchises (122 of them) in their annual report.
I realize the rest of the country gets bored stiff by the Spurs - while I don't understand it I realize it's a truth. Fans of classic fundamental basketball (which includes both offense and defense) usually appreciate the Spurs.
For Bears fans who don't give a whit about basketball, please scroll down, scroll down. And by the way, I know I'll never get the last word on this - if he is anything PO'd is tenacious. I seem to remember calling him a pit bull sometime last fall.

#29 Phil from SATX said . . .In response
Point #1 I dont give a fuck what Josh Howard thinks, he just hates the Suns more than the Mavs cuz the Suns own them. 0 for 1.
Point #2 You still didnt prove that Bowen isnt dirty, you didnt explain his fines and suspensions over the years for being dirty, yes he plays good defense, I never debated that, but he's dirty, he tries to injure people and thats been proven, so what if he's been called out by the best of the NBA. 0 for 2.
Point #3 I agree Horrys foul wasnt the worst thing ever, I think Baron Davis foul was worse. I am more upset with the outcome (suspensions to Suns top players and to Spurs bottom feeders thus resulting in a championship for the Spurs instead of the Suns) And dont give me the crap that Horry is important to the Spurs like Amare and Boris are to the Suns, he's not. I dont give a shit if ESPN calls them classy, WHOOPIE DOO, and whats asinine is for you to suggest that I dont know the team. I've watched them for years, since the Duncan era. 0 for 3
Point #4 Yes Spurs are boring to watch and classic BBall fans appreciate their style. NBA is in the toilet and thats why the Suns brand of BBall is popular, it brings in new fans and keeps them. I'd rather watch paint dry than a Pistons/Spurs series. 1 for 4
Point #5 Your right, I will not let it go, I dont let anything go. Its a downfall of mine though it seems that some appreciate it on here. The only way you can get the last word on this is for us to come to some sort of agreement. I appreciate your debate and great banter, I'll argue with you anytime. You were the one who brought up this Spurs talk, you know that right? Though it pains me to say it cuz it will be giving you tons of ammo against me, and the reason I am so passionate about this issue....I am a die hard Suns fan. Not on the same level I love the Bears but a huge fan none the less. 2 for 5.
Congrats on the NBA title....again. Now if the Bears could just get one.
May 30, 2007
#30 Pissed off said . . .Very cool response PO'd - I'll agree that the Suns are an awful lot of fun to watch, and Steve Nash is pretty much unbelievable. What dooms your team is coaching - Mike D'Antoni may be the worst NBA coach out there (which makes his Coach of the Year title in 2005 completely laughable). He doesn't believe in defense, doesn't preach defense, believes that defense just means fouling. He will NEVER lead the Suns to a championship, and it's a shame, because they easily have the talent to get there. Around these parts we like to speculate how many titles this current Suns roster could win if Gregg Popovich or Jerry Sloan coached them - with their commitment to defense. As Bear fans know, defense wins championships, especially in basketball. How any coach in the NBA cannot understand this is beyond me. That year D'Antoni won Coach of the Year the Spurs beat them in 5, and in relatively easy fashion. How? By playing defense.
And with all the kudos to Steve Nash's abilities as one of the greatest point guards ever (offensively that is), he can never be considered "the best player of the past 5 years" as somebody said during that series because he doesn't play enough defense. But he is the smartest offensive point guard in the league, possibly one of the best ever. Still unbelievable to me that Mark Cuban let him go. What a putz.
Is it greedy for me to want 2 championships in one year? Because I do - Spurs in 2007,
BEARS in 2008! GO BEARS!
May 30, 2007
#31 Pissed Off said . . .Thats just your opinion. My opinion is that D'Antoni is a great coach, he has revolutionized the way ball is played. With his coach of the year award other people, many other people, disagree with you. His offense is the reason the NBA is climbing its way out of the toilet. And I dont believe that he wont win a title, he would have won a title THIS year if Horry wouldnt have hip checked Nash. That dirty play is the cause for the reason that very few are watching the NBA playoffs anymore. Too Boring. I think your responses are proving that your drinking the San Antonio Kool-aid and are oblivious to other NBA markets and other happenings around the NBA.
May 30, 2007
#32 jeff said . . .No one in the country but San Antonians (?) are rooting for the Spurs. Every other NBA fan hates them for their dirty play. Its been well documented. Yeah I've heard it in several markets, mainly talk radio and of course a lot in print. The suns won 2 games in the series and nearly another(game 5) with only 6 players. They have proven that they can win with their style of offense. I just cant believe the Kool-Aid has provoked you to say that D'Antoni and his style will NEVER win a title. I thought you were above that, I guess not. Never say never, man....never.

We have to fill the space some way but that's not the right way. Let me ask this - why do you suppose it takes so long for the NFL to decide on Tank's suspension? What facts are they waiting to come to light? Isn't this completely unnecessary and unfair to the Bears? I think it's totally ridiculous. I wonder if the Bears care (about how long it takes) and whether they're putting any pressure on the league to make a determination so they can plan accordingly.
