Making DaBearsBlog Better

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 | Noah Brier

Hey guys, Noah here. Most of you don't know me, but I'm the less famous half of DaBearsBlog. I get to do stuff like make sure everything runs well instead of interviewing Mike Ditka.

Anyhow, just wanted to let you all know that we've heard you and are going to be trying to speed up the comment process and fix some other things before the season starts. While I'm doing all this, I figured I'd ask if there's anything else you might like to see on the site. Go crazy: We can't do everything, but if you've got good ideas I'd love to hear them.

Thanks to all of you for making this website what it is. I know I speak for Jeff as well when I say you rock.

Noah,

Great job on the site, keep up the great work!

I would like to be able to quote another fan's comment, this feature is seen on a lot of blogs and message boards.

Also, it would be sweet if we could have avatars as well. Last thing, how about users making an account, and we can log in. This would cut down on unwanted post!

As always,

Bear Down!

thanks bearfan34. can you give me some blogs that allow you to quote another comment? i'd like to see how they do it.

accounts and avatars is definitely something i'd like to add . . . have an idea of how to do it, so hopefully we can make it happen.

In addition to avatars, how about in-line smiles or animated smiles (example furnished upon request), and for registered users how about the privilege of posting some pics in some fashion (if abused, they lose this privilege).

How about ratings (allow me to promote another post: thumbs up, or to demote it: thumbs down --- or given a 1-5 star rating as people vote)

In the past I've had problems posting from my balckberry. I think that is due to some sort of time out on the server side. I've also has posts where I've tried to display a url be rejected and other times when they are not rejected.

that said, you're doing a great job and we need to:

Give Noah a game ball!

Some more feedback:

I like the site layout as is. It promotes orderly communication, it is simple, easy to browse through, and clean. I know when you have tiered comments (comments to comments) things can get geeky and confusing. Performance and good clean avatars would be my #1 vote/suggestion. (of course you may have to examine the avatars for obscenity).

So, if you are going to make changes, I suggest you roll them out slowly, get feedback, and tune as needed. Things are working well and you have done a great job. (Don't be like me in my golf game where often when all is working well I decide to adjust my grip & totally F my game).

Ok- you can scold me for posting a non-football post but in response to Jeff #9:

Top 10 Rules to Improve Jeff's Golf Game:

1. Golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.

2. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.

3. Never keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

4. If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.

5. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

6. It's surprisingly easy to hole a chip from the sand when you are lying 8.

7. It's not a gimme if you're still away.

8. There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces, and bounces just the way you meant to play it.

9. You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.

10. Hazards attract; Fairways repel.

midway, good recommendations and we definitely won't do anything radical without getting some feedback. i also love "a smart text filter detection system that tags Green Bay fans and auto formats thier hard drive."

jakub, we have an RSS feed, sorry it wasn't clear: http://www.dabearsblog.com/index.xml

can I be an idiot and ask what the hell an RSS feed is?

I think the site is perfect the way it is...

I am with Big Rob on this one. I like this website the way it is. (i also have no idea what a RSS is)

Signing in would be nice, but i think that would cut some of the friendly banter between us and opposing fans who come here. And while some packer fans can be obnoxious, they always bring out the best in P.O'ed and the rest of us.

June 27, 2007

#16 Midway Monster said . . .

Big Rob: RSS is tech-no-thing-mec-bob that letsfrequently publish stuff be known in an automated manner (ie alerted). So any user can "subscribes to a RSS feed" and enable regular notificatons for new/changed content (& then downloading any updates that it finds).

NO! You rock!! (Noah and Jeff)

Golf rules!

As far as making the site better pretty much every suggestion I have has been mentioned except one. Now not to piss anyone off but It would be nice if me, Midway and JB could have some sort of login access to post our Sunday evening blogs (you didnt think I forgot already did you?) when its our turn without having to send you the post via email first. Because as we all know Jeff tends to get a bit inebriated on Sundays and it might be tough for him to post the blog for us when he is so drunk he doesnt know what a computer is.

Noah could set us up the way he and jeff are so we can just go in and post. Just a suggestion. And if somehow we abuse or sabatoge the site you can revoke our blogging privliges and reduce us to the mere site bloggers we are now.

that's a good description of rss . . . if you don't know what it is, it does the same thing as subscribing by email pretty much.

no radical changes to the design, just some small tweaks.

pissed off, will definitely get you guys logins to post the sunday columns. just email me at dabears AT dabearsblog.com and i'll hook you up (i know you guys did this already . . . but cut me some slack and do it again . . . )

hester: will fix those damn comments. it's really annoying.

for the record, this won't happen that quick, but should be all done by opening day. unfortunately, dabearsblog is not yet big enough to pay the bills . . . . though if anyone knows any potential advertisers we are very open . . .

Update Info on tickets

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Wednesday announced that individual-game tickets for the 2007 season will go on sale through Ticketmaster at noon (CT) on Saturday, July 21.

All Ticketmaster sales will be via phone and Internet only. Fans may charge by phone at (312) 559-1212 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets range in price from $65 to $340.

For regular season games, there is a limit of four tickets per customer per game. There is no limit on how many tickets may be purchased for preseason contests.

In the preseason, the Bears will host the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, Aug. 25, and the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, Aug. 30. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.

The first regular-season home game is on Sunday, Sept. 16 against the Kansas City Chiefs. I love the simplicity of this site. I can't stand blog sites that have Emoticons and features like that, I think it takes too much away from the rich writing and imaginations of all here.. Tee hee. I like the idea of having registered bloggers/readers etc. I do appreciate the smarter packer fans (oxymor0n?) that post challanging but witty and not obnoxious comments or any fans of other teams that bring intelligence to the mix. Unlike the Saints' fans that were idiots or heck, dave.. (now that I mentioned his name, he will be back.)
But otherwise, I love you guys and this site.
So, keep up the good work and good luck with that golf game. I find I play better when there is beer involved.. go fig.

BTW.. I don't think I would be very good at a fantasy football league, I don't think I would have the time. I think you guys should go for it, but.. make me a promise... Please don't monopolize this wonderful site with nothing but DBB fantasy football! I remember we had a discussion about FF not long ago, and it becomes more about Stats and individual performace then it does about teams. Are you all down wit dat homies?

Megan = Voice of Reason. Pissed Off = Voice of Angst. Midway Monster = Voice of Vainglorious Garrulous Pontification.

I like some of the ideas that are floating around, and if we keep getting Bonjo Garcia and quotes about yellow eyeballs on a Lizard named Joe, we may have to consider some sort of screening process. And in regards to FF, I promise not to bring it into DBB forum if we get one going.

Australian No. 16 seed Lleyton Hewitt turned in a quick day of work, recording his 80th career win on grass by dismissing Wimbledon newcomer Simone Bolelli of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Hewitt, who joins Roger Federer as the only former winners at the 2007 Championships, would surpass Brit Tim Henman atop the list of active match wins leaders on grass (83-34) by reaching the final.

How about registering with a password? That would eliminate some of the spoofing and fake comments posted by immature cowardly posters.

And a way to flag when a topic that I read yesterday has a newer, unread post today. That would allow posters to post to an old topic without worrying that their message won't be noticed. A count of unread messages would be even better.

For what it's worth funny pictures and smiley faces I can do without. Clogs up the dialog way to much. Just the conversation is why I come here don't need bells and whistles.
Flagging unread posts is a good idea, don't want to miss anything.
Being able to reply directly to a post could be good too.
You guys are doing a fine job as it is so keep up the good work and GO BEARS!

Hello Everyone,

I am a golfer myself and I like to play whenever I get a chance.
A short while ago, a very good friend of mine told me about a great golfing equipment and accessories website that has discounted prices on all their products, same day shipping in most cases and there is no state sales tax, they are paying that.
So if any golfer here is ready to save some money on quality products at highly discounted prices, you might want to check out their site at; http://hoffmangolf.com
