ESPN The Magazine Wants to Talk

Monday, July 2, 2007 | Noah Brier

Hey guys, Noah again. Got an email this weekend from some ESPN The Magazine writer's who are working on a story about sports fandom. Here's the email:

Having grown up in St. Louis and now residing in L.A., we're both big NFL fans but are currently NFL orphans. We're each trying to find a team to give our respective loyalties, and are going around the league talking to teams, fans, etc. in an effort to get a "pitch" to join that squad's fanbase. Essentially, we're treating it like Match.com for sports. The idea, in the end, is to explore what it means to be a fan, what goes in to it, what is important to fans, etc.

Anyway, beyond talking to players, coaches, front office personnel, we're very much interested in connecting with real fans, bloggers, etc. of every team. We'd love to talk to you and learn the benefits and appeal of being a Bears fan, and what it's like to be part of that "family," but also would appreciate any leads and suggestions you have to get into touch with other big Bears superfans or community icons- say the owner of a great Chicago sportsbar (should be a few to choose from) or a longtime season ticket holder, for example. Any ideas you have that are connected to the Chicago football community are welcome. I know how passionate Bears fans are.

Anyway, I told the guys I would post that and get some feedback. Leave a comment with the "benefits and appeal of being a Bears fan, and what it's like to be part of that 'family'." And if any of you know (or are) superfans or community icons (or know them), mention that too.

There are Bears fans in every city, even Green Bay. I think the key is to come here, (to Da Bears Blog) and connect with others around the world. I consider these guys my family, like brothers, separated from home able to come to a place where everybody knows your name.. hmm, sounds familiar.

Hummm... Bear fans living Green Bay. These are the true soldiers fighting on the front lines of the war. They encounter the enemy daily and often are at hand to hand combat.

We need to send them care packages and show our support daily.

Here's my top 10...

10. Being a Bears fan means you learn the fight song. Bear Down!

9. Being a Bears fan means your team once sang the Super Bowl Shuffle.

8. Being a Bears fan allows you to say "Dit-ka" at random and people won't look at you wondering if you have Tourette's (though, some of the other colorful language might).

7. Being a Bears fan gives you a reason to visit Chicago, one of the best cities on the planet.

6. Being a Bears fan allows you to have a picture of Walter Payton on your dresser and your wife doesn't care.

5. Being a Bears fan makes your wife think about putting a pink Bears jersey on the dog rather than a pink sweater (I'll take what I can get).

4. Being a Bears fan makes you root for any bum of a quarterback that shows the slightest glimmer of hope. It also means the jury is still out on the current quarterback.

3. Being a Bears fan means you can argue vehemently over nothing during the offseason in preparation for arguing over nothing during the actual season. This may sound like every other team as well, but when you can drop names like Sayers, Ditka, Hampton, Singletary, "the Fridge", Payton, Tom Waddle (hell yeah I'm including him), and Butkus whilst arguing, you can begin to appreciate the difference.

2. Being a Bears fan starts to make you say "sausage" in a certain way.

1. There are women regulars on a Bears blog . How freakin' sweet is that?

I think I can sum it up in 3 items:

Tradition; The Bears are a founding team and run away with the most Hall of Famers in the history of the game from Red Grange to Gale Sayers to Walter Payton...and the father of the NFL, George Halas

Defense; If you are truly a fan of football, you should appreciate defense, and no team has the culture that Bears fans have of not just appreciating defense but placing it above all else. The Bears have the best defense in the league now and have all-time greats Bill George, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, and Brian Urlacher.

Die Hard mentality; This isn't unique to the Bears, but you will see more loyalty to the Bears during a bad year or years than other teams see during Super Bowl runs. Bears fans are some of the most football savvy people you will ever meet...and blind loyalty helps too.

With those three elements, being a Bears fan runs in your blood, its visceral...it's like with every loss, a little piece of you dies, but after every win you are reborn.

Megan and Midway: I AM a Bears fan living in GB...please direct any care packages my way!

(fondly remembers wearing his Urlacher Jersey while running errands around Lambeau field on opening day...against the Bears!)

As for the topic: We simply have a good, closeknit community and atmosphere that supports one another. I think it has to do with the long hard years where we went through quarterbacks like water and drafted the worst players imaginable...Cade McNown? All those "next Walter Peytons"? We've been through it all!

Midway, nice try. He was still drinking at 3:30 am while driving a car at a time when he was on a zero tolerance policy from the team. He was barely under the legal the limit and in some states he would have been legally drunk.
At the end of the day this was just the last in a series of incidents for him. Being .008 under the legal limit doesn't excuse his behavior or change the fact that he put himself in yet another bad position. After all, he obviously thought he was over the limit because he refused a breath test.
The Bears have moved on, and so should we.

July 2, 2007

#9 Midway Monster said . . .

Al in WI: you're so wrong it's sad. Freaking driving late at night- OOOoooo. tisk-tisk-tisk ... That's very very bad.

0.08 under = F&%king under.

He refused to take a test? are you sure... not what I heard. Besides - he has the right not to take any test and take on the consequences.

Bottom line - Tank was deemed guilty for crap & our D has not really improved from last year; but hey, what do i know, maybe moral character will get us to win the big game huh? Yeah, that's the ticket... we'll be a team of nice-guys and do a whole lot of United Way commercials.

Midway, yes I am sure he refused a breath test it was in the tribune in the days following the incident.
We'll have to disagree on this; I don't know why the concept of zero tolerance is so difficult to understand.
He was told he had to change his lifestyle and stay out of trouble period. His life style that got him into trouble was his questionable decision-making, usually involving drinking, drugs, and guns at clubs.
He promised to change his life style and stay away from situations that could cause trouble. He was out drinking at 3:30 am; obviously he didn't live up to his end of the bargain. The last time he promised to change his life and stay out of trouble, he went clubbing with his thug pals and one of them got murdered. The Bears gave him a second chance, and he didn't live up to it, period.
And as for this, "Tank go robbed by a Cardinal fan" nonsense; was the cop supposed to let him drive on as he was driving 40 in a 15? Does his status as a Chicago Bear entitle him to speed around at 3:30 am? What would you think he was doing at that time of night? And then when the cop smelled booze, should he have ignored it and asked for his autograph? And finally, when Tank refused a breath test, should have he taken the guy with a criminal record's word for it? Get a fucking grip! The cop's actions were reasonable, and in fact he was correct that Tank had been drinking, he simply was barely under the legal limit.

Concerning Tank, I don't care anymore. I was with you guys who are defending him like crazy . . . before . . . when he was a Bear. I was ready to drink the koolaid and eat the beef sticks. But he's not a Bear now. I'm a Bear's fan, not a Tank fan. There are a ton of guys on this roster better than Tank. In the end, I'm fine with it. I just don't think he's worth the fuss... He's not a Bear. Some may accuse me of being fickle. Call me a fickle Tank Johnson fan, and I could care less. Call me a fickle Bears fan and I'll find you... somehow.

I trust you all have a safe 4th and blow stuff up.

--Midway--

PS: Didn't #54 have a kid out of wedlock, lets cut him also.

July 3, 2007

#15 Pissed off said . . .

Agree with AL totally, sorry midway, you're wrong. I'm not going to get into it because Al laid it all out perfectly in his two posts as to why he was cut. Bottom line, zero tolerance means no being out in public at 3:30...period. And your weak attempt to make Urlacher look bad is inexcusable. Getting chicks knocked up is not against the law.

Regarding the Bears fan thing: Its been pretty well summed up by others but I am going to veer away from the rich tradition angle and take a more current approach. (Even though the tradition and history is probably the best crutch to fall on when talking to a slappy fan of any other team.) To me its about the now. Its about the hope that the team sells each and every year. They are here every year no matter what is going on in your life. Sure we've had some down years but that never stops you from believing. And now, currently, its a great time to be a Bears fan. We just came off of a Super Bowl run and we are primed to get there again this year. Its about a new year....its not about the past (Ok well it's always about the past a little bit, more when we are having a bad season). But its the now, if we go to and win the Super Bowl, its a great accomplishment that will be remembered forever. It will be talked about like the 85 Bears. It could be the best Super Bowl victory ever. It's about the NOW!

#16 JB said . . .

.072 on a 330 pound (beefstick enlarged) man is more than a couple brews...but honestly guys, who cares? It doesn't matter anymore. The only egg on the face of JA and Lovie is they stood up for someone who let them down...not cutting him for being a hair under the legal limit.

The reason a man that large refuses the breath test is because his size works to his advantage on a blood test and they can't administer it on the spot...more time = less alcohol in the blood...and the gamble paid off in terms of the legal results. So unless one of you guys is an agent trying to get Mr. Johnson a new job with some poor team willing to take a chance, the only defensive tackles I want to talk about are Tommie Harris, Anthony Adams, Antonio Garay, and Dusty....and if we get crazy, maybe a little Isreal Idonije. Besides, this post is supposed to be about why it's great to be a Bears fan, not about some loser mistake that some of you can't let go.

Midway...seriously, are you under a zero tolerance policy with a criminal history? If you are then I may cut you from the site if you start posting drunk and get into some trouble with the law (jeff and noah). Otherwise, the comparison makes absolutely no sense. Plus, what's with the cheap shot at Urlacher...are you fucking kidding me? You better check your tone...comparing the problem child with the golden boy, even bringing him into the same sentence is idiocy. Urlacher is the face of this organization...which is good, hell, I hope he has tons of kids out of wedlock, and in 25 years we'll have an unbelievable linebacking core.

WIMBLEDON, England: Lleyton Hewitt made it into the fourth round at Wimbledon on Tuesday. At last.

Hewitt started his third-round match against Guillermo Canas on Saturday, but rain and darkness delayed the 2002 champion's 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win until three days later.

"That's the longest and toughest rain-delayed match I've ever had to put up with," Hewitt said. "To go on and off so many times ... it was a mental battle more than anything out there.

"You just couldn't get down on yourself at all or get worried with the situation because it was the same for everyone."

ok i have recovered and calmed down. Yes, POed, Al, and everyone else, cutting Tank was the right move, while being out til 3:30 isnt a crime he didn't take the breath test because he wasnt sure if he would pass or not and zero tolerance means zero tolerance. I just was an avid Tank supporter.

(and Al i dont actually hate the police officer. He was doing his job and I am very happy he was not influenced by a celebrity case. I just get caught up in the moment and i was ticked that Tank wasnt actually legally drunk, because honestly, i thought he was gonna fail that test miserably)

As to being a bear fan, my reasons are probably similiar to many others. The tradition the Papa Bear started way back in the 1920's. The defense first minded way. The old school football. Smash mouth, in your face, run it down your throat type play. The growing up with every Sunday going to Church, coming home, and watching the game with my dad as he would tell me what was going on. Growing up with the Blue and Orange. And then listening to the pre game and post game shows, which led to listening to the radio all the time, even during the off season for bears news, notes, and discussion.

And just the general excitement that no matter what is going on in my life, the ups, the downs, the happy and the sad moments, I know that every week during the season (except for a bye) I can push everything else out of my mind for 3 hours and join others with the same passion to yell, cheer, scream, cry, and laugh with others over 22 men and a ball playing their hearts out to win. And knowing the when everything else around me is changing, I will still always be able to cheer for my chicago Bears

It doesn't matter if he's .072 or .001. The guy had alcoholic beverages adn chose to drive. This may be fine if you 'know' you're sober, but this isn't a guy who's shown a pattern of great judgement over the last few years.

The bottom line is this: given that he was on probation with the league, and the fact that the Bears are paying exorbitant amounts of money to keep someone with questionable behavior around, and knowing that you truly were on your last legs with said team....

HOW F-ING STUPID DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE ANY!!!! BOOZE AND THEN DRIVE!!!

Okay, so back to the real news...GREG F. OLSEN. Being that I called for us to draft him since February, I'm very excited to see this deal happen so early. Well for me to be a Bears fan,It always bring out a unspoken comradeship when you see a fellow fan walking around in a Team outfit.
This Team can unite all walks of life in this city as well as the whole state of Illinois.
An when you walk into the Shrine on Sunday(Soldier Field what a great name, never sell it to some crap company)
There is no other place you want to be weather its 95 degrees or -15 degrees we're there cheering for another victory.
You can look to all our other team sports but none unite the city as a whole as this Bears team does.
This town never writes this team off no matter what kinda season they have.
An Where else can you have players who redefine how the game is playered from Halas an "Red"Grange to Bronko Nagurski, Sid Luckman, Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton,An soon to be named Future Hall of Famers.
These men reflect this city an that its a No Shit, Take No Prisonor ,Hard Working City.
While NY claims to be the city for which we envy.(They can't figure out which team to root for in NJ yet)We set the mold for which all cities have to follow.PERIOD!!
