If You're Not in Chicago...

Saturday, August 25, 2007 | Jeff

...you're not seeing the Bears tonight. The game will air on NFL Network tomorrow night at 11:00 pm. The NFL has to find a way to make these games part of the Sunday ticket package and at least give out of town fans an opportunity to see their teams during the summer. Give people the option to pay a little extra. A lot of people I know would.

I'll be listening to a radio broadcast on a buddy's satellite radio hookup. If you're in the Chicago area, please come on tonight or tomorrow and give us your thoughts. I'm sure no matter what happens, the topic of conversation will center around #8 but we'll go wherever you guys lead us.

Addendum: Grossman playing a magnificent game thus far, sans the silly fumbled snap. He's smart with the football, comfortable in the pocket and intensely accurate. This team is incredibly balanced offensively and incredibly good defensively. They're special. Bring on the Chargers.

Addendum #2: Grossman has to flash a little Bad Rex just so we don't get too excited. Pick six the other way.

joniak, the greatest ever, makes a great point. bears open with three out of four against 3-4 defenses. tonight is a nice tune-up. no tommie, moose, ruben brown however. hester to start at wide receiver.

let's see, its time to panic here in Chicago. Leading 31 to 13 against the darlings of the sage press corps, the 49ers.

The D looks freaky good.

Rex's pick was throwing to Olsen. I'm not a betting man, but I'll wager that's the last low ball he throws to Olsen this season.

I know we all want to talk about Rex, but fuck if my knees aren't shaking about Hester's shoulder.

word jdawg...waiting for the update...seems like you saw the injury...

August 26, 2007

I'd say bring Grossman back for 1 or 2 more series and give him a chance to throw another TD.....

Benson.... 1.7 Average WTF

August 26, 2007

#41 jdawg said . . .

I didn't see it. Breathed a sigh of relief when he walked off, the heard it was his shoulder.

To me that's the story of the night, plus Benson average. I'm not watching the game, but are the 493ers stacking the box? That would explain his average and Grossman's 200 plus yards and 2 TDs.

#49 - Damn:

The website says differently:

"It appeared that Lewis’ knee slammed into Hester’s helmet. After being treated by team medical personnel for about five minutes on the field, Hester jogged to the sideline. He was soon joking with teammates and never had his shoulder wrapped. The All-Pro return specialist watched the second half of the game on the sideline in street clothes."

How many interceptions for a touchdown is Rex Grossman going to throw before the coaching staff slaps him upside the head?!? Or better still, replaces him altogether?!? I won't even comment on yet another fumble. Grossman is a numb nuts. I refuse to be seduced by the good he accomplished on the field because his negatives outweigh. Grossman is not a playoff caliber QB. It's that simple.

JL, Jeff - I've never been to Josie Woods (moved here a year ago, began a desperate search for a Bears bar), so I dunno how many people end up going there, but you should check out the Gael over on 83rd and 3rd. I talked the owners into bringing in vienna beef polish sausage and chicago-style dogs, as well as goose island and, if I can get them to rent the van to go to Reading, PA to pick it up, Old Style.

Hey, Rex put up 211 yards 2 Td's 1 botched snap(which he recovered) and 1 int in ONE HALF. If he gave us that every game, I think we would win quite a few games. We scored 31 points with Rex as our QB as opposed to Zero with Griese and Orton.

Let me be clear here, Rex still has work to do. He needs to be a good quarterback week in and week out and I am by no means claiming that all our worries are over, it just makes me feel better and gives me hope of what could come. This was a good week.

Obviously Rex is the franchise QB. Though I am not a fan (got off the Rex bus last week) I'll back the decision (heck, there are no other choices anyway). We'll have our highs and our lows, definitely our interceptions and fumbles. If Rex plays like this the Bears will win a bunch of games and this is gonna be a great year. Buckle up boys & girls!

I was at the game last night...good to see Soldier Field all filled up for a preseason game. You could hear a needle drop when Hester was laying on the ground...that was scary!
In regard to Rex, I thought he looked great last night. But, those two glaring mistakes are enough to, as always, leave doubts in the back of my head. Not to mention, the Line gave him a ton of time to throw last night and it won't be like that week one against the Chargers. I guess we are just gonna have to play another season of hold our breath everytime he drop back to pass.
Otherwise, Benson had a bad game. Didn't get much blocking, but didn't do much himself either. We will need much more than that, but it is too early to hit the panic button.
Other random thoughts: DManning can be a stud in the return game...that boy can fly! He needs to get on the field this season , too much speed not to. Dusty looks like a nice addition to the D along with Walker. The 49ers did not look like a very good team at all. (Gore wasn't playing though)

Okay, didn't see the game, TIVO will record tonight. But even before reading Rahula Strohl's play-by-play, David Haugh's surprising me with the negativity. Just looking at 31 points and talking about how we can't have this bad QB play doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. After reading the first half Strohl commentary, I'm even more perplexed. Do we really expect that Rex is going to be perfect? Do we have any right to demand it? If so, I guess 49'ers fans have mobilized to the locker room with torches and nooses, and Alex Smith may be dead already. Alex Smith, first pick in the 2005 draft. And he too apparently dropped a snap.

Haugh needs to review the Griese stats again from previous years. He throws INTs too. If the combination of Rex, special teams and defense gets us 31 points in a half, I'm guessing we're going to win that game no matter what Rex does thereafter.

Looking forward to seeing the game. Also, before lamenting begins about how bad Benson was, the play-by-play sounds a lot better than the 1.7 yard average. Looks like he took some losses there.

On the other hand, Mike Downey is MUCH more positive. Like that better, seems more appropriate given the circumstances.

wrong- you can see it on the niners channel on the west coast.
the downside is listening to their idiot bias announcers butcher the game call.
