Inexcusable

Tell me Lovie...why your number one draft choice is playing in the second quarter of the last preseason game?

I dont understand why they are playing anyone at all. They should have conceded at halftime. G-regg, Okwo, Wilson and McGowan have all been hurt. Joniak had G-regg slamming shit in the training room, that isnt reassuring.

In addition to that weve allowed a 73 yard punt return, didnt have a first down in the first quarter, and have seen our best plays come not from the rejuvanated KO but from Chris Leak. I know its a meaningless final preseason game but it hurts to listen to it anyway. And the injuries are scaring me.

Any word on how serious this might be? How long he might be out?

I hope we escape this one without any damage.

Hope this is true, this is from the Chicago Tribune:

Lovie: "Right now, it's a knee bruise."

Replays show he just landed square on his left kneecap. So no ligament damage or anything, and if there was any ligament or tendon damage, that'd be a weird way to incur it.

From da site...

"Olsen then injured his left knee while making a 3-yard reception and did not return. The rookie tight end slammed his helmet and gloves to the ground as he limped along the sideline.

“Right now he has a knee bruise, coach Lovie Smith said at halftime. “We’re evaluating him and hopefully he’ll be OK.

Slammng helmet and gloves?? Sounds like he was pissed... hopefully not because he was hurt.

Not cool.

Yes, frustrating that Olsen--or anyone for that matter--would pull up lame in a preseason game. But usually when the injury is serious, the player is a little too dazed to be slamming his helmet. He's a young brash rookie tight end, he still goes to Sauce and John Barleycorn's (yes even the one on Clark Street)...we've got to bear with him while he grows into the growling man we know he can be. For now, he's just a little annoyed, like the rest of us feel when we bite into a hot dog and take the whole pickle spear with it.

In other news, if any of you remember last year's multi-platinum hit single "Da Superfan Shuffle" -- well there's about to be a major site relaunch in about a week. Don't remember? Hit http://www.DaSuperfans.com for some refreshment.

Nine days and counting!

Sucks to read that this morning, but I'm not second guessing Lovie - that's a little too easy after the fact, and that same injury could have occurred in the first 3 games, or the first game against the Chargers, or anytime. The preseason is a necessary evil, and shit happens.

I wouldn't have really expected Olsen not to play in the second quarter, he's not a starter yet, and he's a rookie. In fact, if I got to choose who to protect from the same injury, he'd be pretty far down on the list. Des Clark did pretty well for us last year. The virtually unavoidable fact of player injury is what depth is all about, and the Bears have it in spades - compared to the Cowboys, who lost their best cornerback, Terence Newman, and proceeded to have the entire defense look like crap without him.

It could be way worse, the Bears did very well in avoiding injury in preseason. Still, hope that MRI is favorable.

For those who watched, what were the high points? Is it true that Griese sucked? Won't get to see the game on NFL Network until tomorrow.

I hope to hell that injury isnt serious. I'm not going to say its like losing Peyton Manning but Olsen is damn good and he's quick, and catches everything. What I've seen of him so far in preseason is that he aint afraid to get hit and run with the big guys. He will be a key contributor this year but we need him on the field. He streches the field, big time. It helps open up the run game. This looks bad. I need news on this MRI. Good to see Tommie back though.

I was there and I can verfiy how mad he was...From my angle, I could see him walking in the tunnel and he looked pretty POed. What a shame, that didn't need to happen. Let's just hope it isn't serious and he is only out a little while.

Lou: Really excited about the site redesign - that vid is one of my all-time favorite youTube links EVAR.

Also, yeah, sucks that Olsen's out, but it sounds like he was being a little reckless, so maybe it'll calm him down?

If you click my name above it will take you to the Chargers depth chart. The offense is potent, LT for sure, Lorenzo Neal is probably the best FB in football. Who the hell is Craig Davis (WR). I know Vincent Jackson emerged a bit last year and Gates is solid. Our defense is good enought to restrict them. Plus throw in the fact that we're facing a 1st year coach. I think SD is taking a step back this year for sure.

Now to the SD Defense. Who on there scares you, no one. Merriman is real good, roids and all. But outside of that, nobody stands out to me. The corners arent bad but they are certainly beatable and everything else is mediocre in my mind. I think our offense will eat them up. We just need our D to hold them to less than 20.

Just got word from a friend in Chicago that Olsen will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a knee sprain. They will know more when the swelling goes down.

Disagree Jeff. It is very excusable. Injuries happen, and it looks like this one will only take him a short time to get back on the field, and more importantly, have no lingering effects. He's a rookie...the more reps he gets the better he will be. If this was grossman or urlacher or moose, i'd agree, but the guy is young. And I don't think anyone likes this kid more than me and my huge mancrush (I guess StartOlsen has a claim too), since I wanted this kid in February. It'd be nice to have everyone healthy, but I have a feeling someone else may miss a game or two at some point this year. We're at 98% strength going into SD...let's focus on that and kick some ass.

I can live with 2-4...

As long as he's found his groove by midseason, what more can we ask for.

I heard Pro football weekly is very good. But I heard that a subscription to footballinjuries.com is far better. The best bang for you buck by far.

I'm sticking with Lovie (and PO and JB) on this one. Offensive starters played one series and Defense played 2 series. After that you have an entire game to get through after removing 22 of your players. Plus you still have to get rookies, 2nd stringers that you know need some reps some time out on the field. Playing Olsen for the rest of the first half was probably the plan, then put in some scrubs for the rest of the game. Injuries happen, and 2-4 weeks doesn't sound too bad. It'll probably limit him after that though, it can be hard to plant on that leg when making a hard cut.

My biggest worry about the Chargers is keeping the defense fresh. With the D only playing about a games worth during 4 weeks, will they be able to last the whole game against the high powered chargers? Chasing LT and Gates around the field will tire out our D, and don't think that they can't put up a couple of long drives against our First string. Their offense is just as good as our defense. We need a couple of takeaways and hold some good field position. Keep our running game working so our defense gets some rest. If Benson keeps running for 2.4 yards a carry, our defense will start to give up points late in the game.

wow. i can't disagree more with some of you. this kid's not a starter? he's a first round draft pick you and your coaching staff and the organization have spent two months touting. he's going to be the difference maker, stretching the middle of the field. he's not a starter? put john gilmore on the field if you're desperate for a tight end. injuries happen but they shouldn't happen to key components of your organization in the second quarter of the fourth preseason game. "we have to play somebody." thats correct, lovie. play those twenty guys that aren't going to be on the roster the next morning.

main point here is, this is why preseason sucks so bad. all preseason we have all been saying I just hope nobody gets hurt... well, somebody did. @#%#@^%%&^@$ %

Jeff, Olsen is all those things you said, but officially he is not the starting tight end. And he is a rookie, so every live snap still counts as real experience for him, even if it's preseason. I know they go in with game plans - starters will play so many series, then first line backups will play so many, etc. It was unfortunate but again, what's to say that it doesn't happen in the first series against the Chargers? These guys are always one play away from a game or season ending injury, and plenty of those occur during practice, both before and during the season.

Let's be honest, can anyone here say that they were screaming at the TV because Olsen was playing in the second quarter, BEFORE his injury? If you did, then you have a legitimate beef. Otherwise, it's hindsight is 20-20.

Even without Olsen in there for the first few games (hopefully it's that or less) the remaining offense still has to be considered an upgrade over last year. And they did pretty good last year, so that suggests they will weather this mishap just fine.
