Let's move the debate to Sunday's night game against the Cowboys. I'll get us started.
1. The Bears can not win this game despite Rex Grossman. The Cowboys will find ways to put points on the board and the Bears must capitalize on a weak secondary. If Ron and Lovie coach around Rex, then it's time to make a change at quarterback.
2. Bernard Berrian should be able to run through that secondary. Look for a big day if the quarterback gets him the ball. Greg Olsen's debut? I'm excited.
3. The defense may have the Wade Phillips stamp on it, but this Cowboys front seven doesn't have half the talent of the Chargers front (only 3 sacks). Reaching into the Tank Johnson cookie jar feels like an act of desperation.
4. The Bear defense has three distinct goals for Sunday night: (a) contain Romo in the pocket (b) follow Jason Witten all over the field and (c) make T.O. uncomfortable all evening. They do those three things and the 'Boys will have trouble scoring points.
5. This has all the makings of a field goal game so special teams will be pivotal. Robbie must make kicks and Devin must put the team in good field position.
All in all, I like the Bears to win Sunday night 23-20.
Take over.
#2 said . . .Copied from last thread but it works.
Why we will win:
1) We will control the field position game all night with #23, and the boys arent good enough to go the length of the field on this defense. Devin gets pumped for primetime games.
2)Rex will have one of his classic star studded prime time games like he did vs STL, SEA, NYG etc. That will ensure the offense puts up points and we control TOP.
3) The boys defense is about the worst in the NFL, we've played a top 5 defense in SD and a top 10ish defense in KC. (Ok I guess that ties in with #2) Dallas has won 2 shootout type games against bad defensive teams. That will change Sunday.
4) The Bears are at home, its primetime, c'mon who's gonna come in to Sodier and win under those circumstances? No one.

#3 Phil from SATX said . . .Good job on the defensive goals - that's it in a nutshell. We can't forget about the run, but they won't, and Marion Barber is a hard-nosed runner who is no LT - I don't think he's a Cedric Benson either, more like an AP.
PO'd, thanks for the referral to the Sun-Times today, Greg Couch has an excellent article about Rex that happens to be EXACTLY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SAYING HERE. So put that in your pipe and smoke it Mike.

#5 beardown1982 said . . .Just dug in a little bit on that Miami game - I got concerned when I saw that Marion Barber had a 40 yard run in the game, something I am hoping for but definitely not expecting from our RBs. Then after reading about the game from the Miami newspaper, I see several things: 1) that run occurred very late in the game when the outcome had already been decided; 2) the Miami defense has been inexplicably terrible in both of its games this year, looking nothing like the defense from last year that ranked #4 in the league; 3) Zach Taylor apparently played the whole game with a concussion that he suffered in the first few minutes of the game; 4) Trent Green fumbled twice and the center fumbled once, allowing Dallas to set up on Miami's 30 twice in a row to begin drives.
Right now the best thing Dallas has going for it is its confidence, but that confidence won't last long against the blue and orange D. They have won against two BAD teams so far this year. Despite all of our hand-wringing (mine included), they are now about to face a very GOOD team, in its own den. Good luck to you Cowboys. You're gonna need it.
Hope you still feel its a "win-win" after you lose.

#6 Megan said . . .I generally agree with the assessments so far. However, I wouldn't expect Hester to get many chances to return many kicks or punts. (although, it often only takes one!) I imagine the Cowboys will do their best to avoid him, if they are smart at least. That said, if they throw DManning back there with Devin on kicks...I wouldn't be surprised if we get a nice surprise kick return out of him. He really showed some flashes in the preseason (ok, ok, aside from that fumble turned into a safety) and I think eventually a team will sleep on him. Although, we should have good field position if they do try and kick away from Devin everything considered, so we will have to take advantage. (I think that bothered me more than anything during the Super Bowl...we continually got good field position on squibb kicks and did nothing with it!)
Here is an interesting article that Rex supporters will enjoy. I think some good points are made.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/couch/568339,CST-SPT-greg21.articleI'm really hoping that Olsen can catch a ball or two in the middle of the field early in the game to put the defense on their heels. Although, it is his first game as a pro, so I don't want to expect too much.

#7 Al in WI said . . .I like what you are saying PO'd, I hope you are right. I just don't have a good feeling about this game. I think our only advantage is that we are playing at home.
If their defense is as bad as you say, hopefully Rex will have more time in the pocket and he will have a better game.
I might have to start drinking before the game even starts, just to calm down.

#10 beardown1982 said . . .I heard an interview with Wade Phillips where he said something like "who knows, we might not be able to kick it to him" but he didn't sound very convinced or convincing. I think this is a somewhat reckless coach (the total opposite of Bill Parcells, which is why they went to him) who will be kicking to Hester, at least long enough to hopefully score his 2nd touchdown of the year.
There was a piece on NFL Network today where they showed that Hester is at an 8% return for score pace, which is absolutely phenomenal and better than anyone who has come before him, including the great Gale Sayers.

#12 Pissed Off said . . .Here are my two keys to victory:
1. The O Line must step up their game and not only bust holes in the center of the Boys line, but provide solid protection against the blitz (which we know by now is coming); and
2. Ced Ben or AP must provide effective blocking to slow down the blitzers that the O Line might miss.
If you have these two things, Grossman will have the opportunity/time to make passes, regardless of whether Turner goes with a conservative or gunslinger game plan.

#14 Coxy said . . .Interesting article on Benson in the Trib. He sure is an odd duck. Sitting alone in the cafeteria at training camp, wearing sunglassses. His high school coach said despite his comments to the contrary, he takes criticism very seriously and is apparently very sensitive to negative comments. That makes complete sense to me after watching his short but drama-filled NFL career with the Bears.
I really hope for his sake that he achieves the success that will help him bond with this team, because I really don't think he has yet. Maybe that's why some have said it looks like he acts disinterested - I think ole Cedric just needs a little love from his teammates, as silly as that sounds. Let's start it rolling for him on Sunday.

#15 Pissed Off said . . .I am very excited for this game. There is a lot riding on this game. Bad Rex, hello Griese. Bad offense, Lovie buys "coordinating offense for dummies" book and fires Turner. I am just happy we are playing a JV Defense.
I am hoping Olsen catches something in the middle with some room to run. I am hoping Dallas shenks their first punt and then kicks to Devin all day. It will be interesting to see if Babich deviates from the cover 2 like he did the first couple weeks, against a good passing offense.
I am going all in and sitting TO and Romo this week in my fantasy league. I am praying the Bears D doesn't make me look retarded. But hey, gotta stick by your squad.

The Bears on Friday re-signed punter Dirk Johnson to their 53-man roster and released cornerback Ade Jimoh, repeating the same two moves that were made last Saturday.
An emergency fill-in for the injured Brad Maynard, Johnson averaged 49.8 yards on four punts in last Sunday's 20-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson was waived Wednesday, but is back two days later.
The Bears also made two practice squad moves, re-signing receiver David Ball and terminating the contract of safety Josh Gattis.
Ball signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of the University of New Hampshire and spent the entire preseason with the team and the first two weeks of the regular season on Chicago’s practice squad.

Right now the Bear O is very easy to defend. Too many 3 and outs is notta to good. Bears need MANY good games from Rex or......else... I'd like to see the D mix and blitz Romo with a spy waiting for the kill. Don't expect Hester to see to many returns but, if he does.... AND Finally.......the Bears HAVE to be the most VIOLENT team out there Sunday night. In my view, when the talent is close, whoever wins the most collisions wins the day/night. Jones only rushed for 32 yds on 15 carries; pretty sub par if you ask me. The Bears will shut down the run because the 2 headed running game of Dallas doesn't compare to LT or LJ, who they already shut down. It will be up to Tony Romo who will have to prove that he can lead his team to a win in a "big game".
Basically, if Ron Turner can get this offense to do anything, I don't think that the Cowboys can win this game in Chicago. 1 touchdown and 6 turnovers is just not cutting it...this is not all Rex's fault!....It is the whole offensive unit!

Are we to assume that stubborn is equivalent with good coaching. How can you stand by a QB that has lost the Super Bowl, had more interceptions than touchdowns this season (again take away the run backs by Hester last week and offense stinks or is really Gross Man!)
Give the experienced backup a chance to play. Isn't one Stupid Bowl , I mean Super Bowl loss that can be attributed to one player and one very stubborn coach enough of this nonsense. No baseball coach leaves his pitcher in who is pitching homeruns ball after ball to the other team. (think interception), but these coaches believe that is the way to go. If the Bears stay on the path this year that the Super Bowl gave us, we will be a 500% team even with a great defense. Remember the "Cade is our future" statement of another coach? Well "Gross" results are the future if we don't have a QB who is consistent. He does not have to be spectacular, just not single handed have the ability to lose every game, especially the big one.
If anyone thinks that Peyton Manning playing for the Bears would have made not difference, and that Mr. GrossMan playing in the same way for Indy that he did for us would have made not difference, then Lovie probably has a slot for you on the coaching staff.
Pity, we had/have a chance to run the table, but not with this QB.
As a Bear fan for 40 years, I truly wish we would see the light, but Quarter backs have never been the highlight, and it seems the coaching staff wants to keep it that way.

I have to give him and the team credit - they beat a team we coudln't score more than 3 points on. Offense DOES count.
It will be a very competitive season (I hope) in the division. Especially if we lose tonight - becasue it will then be imperitive to beat GB twice.

They dominated Detroit in the offensive part of the game. The Bears need to do the same thing to their offense. Dress them up in something like bright pink and magenta. And make the offense’s helmet symbol look like one of those bears off of the “Care Bears series. Make them wear those colors until they start winning some games. I have been a Rex-backer for a while now. I have fought for the guy time and time again, but this is unacceptable. HE IS KILLING US. Where we need leadership and intelligence, he is only offering jitters and bad decisions.
At least if we keep playing this way, we should get a nice high draft pick.

#83 Jakub said . . .At the beginning of the season I was so positive with all of the weapons on offense and defense. Now after two season ending injuries on Defense and probably a few more injuries after this game on both offense and defense. The offense just looks awful and the sickening part is Griese is not really going to make things better if you pull Grossman. He is at the end of his career. I swear after SO many years of piss poor quarterbacking for the Bears, will there ever be a good long term quarterback for the Bears? I don’t see that option in either Griese or Orton. It is going to be painful to count the number of injuries after this game!

#84 Mike said . . .Of, so our offense sucks. What is going on with the D tonight? Any word on the Briggs or Vasher injuries...
Great, Harris just went down. This is going from horrible, to worse.

#85 Jakub said . . .Jakub, the problem is that they've barely left the field. You leave them on the field on the field all damn game, they get tired and they suffer.

#86 NY Bears Fan said . . .Yeah, but it seems like TO is just tearing them up, up the middle.
I guess the question now is, now what? Stick with Grossman? Griese, I fear, is no better. I really think Rex's problem is all mental, but how do you get him out of it?
And just as I speak, he throws another pick. This...wow...

#88 Dejected said . . .That window of opportunity that good teams have closed a little bit more tonight. Green Bay whipped on the Bolts after the Bears score 3 on them. Is Bernard Berrian REALLY a go to guy? After a good start the Bear O-line looked O-ld while the D line weakened as the game went on. And Rexy - right on cue - threw a tomczak. The hope is that it's early and the team can bounce back. This was not an encouraging performance folks. This was a BIG game as big games go early. And the Bears shit all over themselves. Pretty sickening late running game by Dallas. Good thing there's next week.

#90 Dallas Faithful said . . .To be completely HONEST with everyone- I called this game after the first time we got to first and goal and came up with only 3...after that play I KNEW we were finished- I KNEW we didn't have the kind of grit and determination of a high-caliber team. Did anyone else see the similarities between this game and the Chargers game..our defense was outstanding in the first half- held them to 3 points, our offense drives down the field gets to within the 3 yard line and our piss-poor coordinator calls two runs plays and a worthless grossman throw out the back of the endzone...the same thing happened in San Diego...OUR offense cannot afford to come up with 3 points on that drive- forget the rest of the game I knew it was over at that point- the rest of the game just proved my point.
I was screaming at the screen to go for it on 4th and two...even if they miss we had them pinned down there...oh well...
Also- with all the injuries on defense, at this rate our entire defensive practice squad will be seeing action...FUCK THIS BULLSHIT...FUCK that coward ass softy Benson...FUCK grossman...Fuck Ron Turner...the only one with Balls on this team is Urlacher...what a waste- I'd ask for a trade if I was him.

#92 Dallas Faithful said . . .I've never laughed SOOO hard in My life. It reminds me well of my time in the service, and how officers (or in this case Lovie Smith ) would avoid being BUSTED for dereliction of duty, by blaming the inept underlings (in this case QB rex-o-roo).
Chicago fans need to recognize who the QB should be, and recognize the coach is failing to recognize the LACK of ability and that in itself makes Smith the MOST guilty. Belief and continued use of Grossman is simply insane. Look it up...
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over - yet expecting different results.
That IS what the country should will be thinking about the Bears coach. owners, and their fans! If grossssman is still in the drivers seat after Dallas' walk through the Windy, then tell old lady McCasketkey she can pinch even more pennies in next years draft, because what should should be the best team in the NFL is dead.
want real results? BOYCOTT "da Bears" until they deserve our faith and DOLLARS again!!!
BTW: Anyone able to a REAL NFL game like GreenBay or Indy?

Be glad "McCasket" didn't open the purse strings, Romo well could have been the QB for the Chicago right now. Money talks again.

#96 Fifty and Four said . . .If Lovie doesn't pull Grossman after 6 interceptions in two games, he should be fired. This guy is not a starting QB in any way shape or form currently, and he is getting worse! I still maintain that with Peyton Manning as our QB and Gross Man as Indy's we would have won the Super Bowl. We will not even make the playoffs if this keeps up.
Oh yeh, Green Bay is back, and not way back like we have seen recently. They seem back for real as is their QB. What a guy! Old enough for a wheel chair in NFL years, and still bringing the heat. Give credit where it is due. Someone like that inspires a team as much as GrossMan makes ours feel like you know what....September 24, 2007

Brian Griese would have been nice to see in the 2nd MOST Important half, but thank Chicago's coach for sticking to the same same same same game plan.
