Nine Reasons I'm Happy As Shit Today

Monday, October 8, 2007 | Jeff

I don't know what excuses other people use to get blackout drunk but last night a tough, grind-it-out victory over a bitter rival did the job for me. Nine reasons cancer couldn't wipe the smile off my face today:

9. Brian Urlacher's interception. Scratch that. Brett Favre's interception. Favre made an only-Favre-can-make mistake that changed the feel of the entire football game. I won't lie. Sometimes I wonder if Favre isn't really, really stupid. He sure plays like a lot.

8. Brian Griese's intelligence behind center. One bad interception aside, Griese made consistent, efficient throws and took sacks when he needed to. I never hated Grossman but you never got the sense that Rex thought much while he was playing. Griese threw the Detroit game away. He outplayed Mr. MVP in the second half last night.

7. Green Bay's kickoffs. I've never seen anything like that. Mason Crosby did a nice job keeping the ball in play but if teams are going to use this gameplan, the Bears are going to have short fields every week and they're going to need to put a non-defensive line in the middle of the kickoff return.

6. Last night was arguably the best coaching job this staff has done since they've been here. In the second half, the defensive and offensive schemes were perfect - especially Ron Turner's pitch-perfect call on the touchdown pass to Desmond Clark (which shocked me ). Committing to a failing run game set that throw up. They actually used failure to create success. That's great coaching.

5. Peanut Tillman's first half performance gave the Bears a chance to win this game. His two strips - and they WERE great strips - kept the Packers off the scoreboard on two drives and kept the Bears alive. I have a terrific love/hate relationship with Peanut but last night there wasn't any hate to be found.

4. Fourth quarter score: 10-0 Bears. It ain't hard to figure out, kids.

3. Here's a stat I couldn't find in any of the newspapers today. The Packers only ran the ball nine times in the second half. Lance Briggs was a tackling machine, single-handedly stopping Wynn six times for 10 yards. If last night didn't prove it, nothing will: the Chicago Bears should not end this season without signing Briggs to a lengthy and lucrative extension. He's a better linebacker than Brian Urlacher.

2. Greg. Olsen. Star. This kid has a chance to be the best tight end to put on the navy and burnt since Ditka. Last night - in a big time game - he provided a big time offensive performance and energized a unit that looked dead for weeks. I waited a long time but I've found my new Tom Waddle. I'll be wearing a white 82 by season's end.

1. Last night at Lambeau Field, we beat the Green Bay Packers.

CHICAGO BEARS
MAKE EVERY PLAY CLEAR THE WAY FOR VICTORY!!!

Olsen looked awesome, Griese haters can shut up for a week, and our Defense played like themselves.

Finally- the Bears are who we thought they were!

I got bit by the Jeff new thread post, just posted a long one and feel the need to repost here.

Well Bear fans, is this Monday morning great or what? THIS Monday morning MORE than makes up for the last two Monday mornings.

THE TURNAROUND HAS BEGUN.

Man, where to start? First kudos goes out to Ron Turner, even though I was still screaming at him during the game. But his madness had method, in continuing to allow Ced "Canton or Bust" Benson to mash for his 2 yards, 1 yard, 3 yards, this is what allowed the play action to work. Now I happen to believe that you don't have to go through THAT much misery for play action to work, but still...it worked, and at the most important times. Kudos to you, RT, for finally going down to the basement and breaking out the fine wine, no time like the present, right? Hester and Olsen and Bradley, thank you thank you thank you.
Here's to Peanut, MVP of the game. Was that second right body punch a thing of beauty or was it not? The experiment of using Danieal Manning at CB was not so good, we're lucky to have survived that. I was screaming for Ricky Manning Jr., he has experience and was quite good for the Panthers. That change WILL be made if we have to go without Vash again.

Brian U., thanks for showing up in the second half, your first half was one to erase, never to speak of again. Lance Briggs, can we PLEASE have a little home town discount, YOU'VE GOT TO STAY! If you leave, we're going to stalk your ass worse than Glenn Close. I'm talking bunnies on a stove! You don't want that, do you?

Wasn't it strange how Green Bay and the great Brett Favre turned into scared little children in the second half? It was like they had seen a ghost, that wasn't a ghost, it was the Chicago Bears trampling over the grave of your 2007 season hopes. Super Bowl for you? HA! NO SUPE FOR YOU! You're not even going to win the division! You won't! Just wait and see!

Kudos to the incomparable Devin Hester, who once again changed the game just by suiting up and walking out onto the field, again and again and again. And kudos too to the other half of our very special Special Teams, who did an awesome job on coverage pretty much all day save one, and that one the soon-to-be repeat Pro Bowler Brendan Ayanbejo redeemed his one muff by running back and punching it out.

Finally, max kudos to our quarterback for the rest of this season, at least, Brian "I'm Just Competent, That's All" Griese. A very nice job overall - maybe not stellar, as PO'd generously points out, but wholly and utterly competent. THAT'S what we were looking for.

It is my strongly held opinion that the play of this team in the second half of this game is going to be the team we see from here on out. Competent and continually improving offense, defense that doesn't wilt in the second half and now remembers how to create turnovers, and more of the speciallest Special Teams on the planet.

WINS and WINS and WINS and WINS. Vikings, Eagles, Lions, Raiders - watch yer asses - a monster has awoken in Chicago.

Sorry for the long post, folks, I just couldn't stop. WHAT A GREAT DAY! THANK YOU CHICAGO BEARS!!!!!

Lance Briggs better linebacker than #54?

Uh, no.

But that's okay, all's forgiven today, and my repost shared your sentiment about Briggs (all except for those heretical words) - WE MUST FIND A WAY TO KEEP THE (2nd) BEST LINEBACKER IN THE LEAGUE!

Yeah, cant agree on the Urlacher thing, maybe last night though. Love Greg Olsen, cant decide to buy a Hester jersey or Olsen one now. Its a good problem to have.

#6 jeff said . . .

i dont mean to be killing urlacher recently but the guy is an outside linebacker masquerading on the inside. if he was able to play outside (where he started as a disaster), i think the team would move briggs to the middle. either way, what a problem to have...two great linebackers and a very underrated third one.

October 8, 2007

#7 Andrew said . . .

There is no way Briggs is better that Urlacher. Maybe he is off to a better season but you keep your blasphemous comments to yourself!

October 8, 2007

#8 jeff said . . .

i'd make the argument he's superior against the run, better at shedding blockers, a better tackler. they're equal pass rushers adnd urlacher has been brilliant in the passing game.

October 8, 2007

#9 ron - not a rex hater - but not a Griese lover said . . .

On the Urlacher thing. I thing Briggs is different, not better. And to be honest in an offensive game plan you cant PLAN on running plays to ensure two LBs are blocked. You got 4 down in front of 5, with a tight end that Might pick up the OLB on an outsie run.

So when game planning offense you say "If we have to shoot a guard out to the second level, who do we go after... In the Bears case its Urlacher. So he for sure gets a linemine flying out at him, leaving brigs to get chipped/hit (maybe) by a smaller RB or not at all.

Is briggs good? Yes. Is he in the same tier as urlacher. I think so. is he better? i doubt it

But as a 7 year offensive lineman, I will tell you that they are planning and trying to get a guy out to Urlacher. Which makes briggs even better and I am ok with that.

October 8, 2007

#10 ron - not a rex hater - but not a Griese lover said . . .

Now on a second note... I think Urlacher needs to step up. Meaning, with all I just said Briggs is laying it all out there. Urlacher has not had a "this is my defense, this is my field" type of game. He needs some, the team needs some, one of those games where flattens someone coming across the middle, kills a lead blocker or RB coming out of the 2 gap and chases a QB to the ground to set the tone all in the first half.

Being the o lineman I am that would make me freak out...

I'm very excited that we've seen a turnaround for the Bears. At least on defense anyway.
I recieved a barage of text message bs from drunken packer fans all first half. I had turned my phone off knowing this was coming only to be able to send the parting shot at 10:54 pm last night. It was priceless to see them have to eat a piece of humble pie.
I think the only guy around more disapointed last night then Madden is our friend Mike.
Loved Olsen last night, that guy is special!

Before we go down too far on this path, let's realize we're arguing about two greats and who is better - which is of course much more fun than our last recurring argument, about which QB sucks worse, but still maybe a little off track today.

Can I just give a big shout out of thanks to the great Midway for both rousing us up last week, distracting us and making us laugh a whole bunch?

Thanks Midway, Blog MVP to you for this week's game. Well done and much appreciated.

Things I loved last night...
-games like the one Tillman had can launch a guy's confidence, making for a great season.
-We finally started getting turnovers again
-We finally have a real QB making real decisions. Don't forget he faced a brutal rush all night.
-Ced did his job and did it well. That run D is fucking awesome, so no bitching about his performance
-my man Olsen played and validated the predictions of everyone with half a brain on this blog
-FINALLY- Hester on a reverse!! why did it take so long?
-lastly, we beat the hated Pack. I can hold my head with pride. Today I walked the halls of my building singing Bear Down, Chicago Bears.
It is a great day.

Bart Start - be specific please, and I'll listen. How did the Packers hand the game to the Bears? Favre's dumb pass? Your receiver being exposed as great hands but weak in carrying the ball? McCarty's dumb challenges? The facts are - these things were always there and it took a team like the Bears to expose them.

As someone said (Phil I think?): NO SUPE FOR YOU!

The Packers obviously are not very good. Or the Packers are great adn the Bears are better. Which one is it - it has to be one of the other.

Someone in the rprevious thread asked about my son -
He lives in Chicago and bought tickets on StubHub (along with several other people.)

Urlacher TOOK the ball away.
Ayanbadejo TOOK the ball away.
McGowan TOOK the ball away.

OK - sorry for the multiple posts. Last one (for now at least):

"McCarthy said the run blocking on the interior of the offensive line was not good. "When one linebacker (Lance Briggs) has 16 tackles, there's a problem with that;"

So I'm going to assume that the Packer game plan was to take Urlacher out of the game and take their chances on a hobbled Briggs. Not a bad strategy on paper, but they played the game on the field instead.

(Where is Pack Is Back? I figured he wouldn't be man enough to post here after the game. I have less respect than ever for Packer fans. I think he was the one who said he read every post here and sure ran his mouth. Now - nothing. If you're reading, do us all a favor and stay away. Your comments were literally ignorant and I certainly don't expect anything better now. Let me guess:
The Bears were lucky
Favre is great
The Bears suck
The fumbles never actually happened
Hester is no good - how many return yards did he get? (Ignoring that the Packers kept us in the game with short kicks anyway.)
No fair using the tight end!

And on and on...

1. Damn, it has been a great day!

2. I am pleased with CB. I know the y/c was low, but last week everyone was saying that his y/c was fine, but fumbling was the issue. He kept his head, more importantly he kept the ball, and he did his job. I think he'll be fine.

3. We may need to stop saying that the Bears can't draft offensive talent. Olsen's hands are great. Those were tough catches, and he made them look easy.

4. No reason to debate 54 vs. 55. It's too great of a day for that. They play different types of styles and like great players they arise when they are needed. Yesterday it was Briggs. I can't get Urlacher's Arizona game last year out of my head either. Bottom line: I'd love to keep Briggs. I was pissed as hell at him in the offseason but come on, let's keep this unit together!

This game has changed the whole season. Even Mariotti wrote a positive column today. They need to win Sunday and start this thing over.

October 8, 2007

#28 Bill said . . .

OK - I've got to stop reading this.

"So it was a new strategy in just the fifth game of Croby's career to pooch kick away from Chicago's exceptional kick returner, Devin Hester, in an effort to make him a non-factor.

Boy, did it work.

Mason's kickoffs were as follows: 42 yards (2-yard return), 35 yards (0-yard return), 34 yards (0-yard return) and 45 yards (15-yard return)."

OK - so we get the ball on the 30, 35, 36, and 40. Average starting field position: 35 yard line. I don't know the NFL average, but that has to be pretty good.

Obviously, it's the right theing to do. The Packers admitted they simply don't have the talent to stop him. But the writer made it sound like it came without a price. I'll take the ball on the 35 to start a drive everytime. So would the Packers. So woudl anyone.

Thank you, Devin.

Heroes of last night:
1. Greg Olsen, our best offensive threat.
2. Des Clark, a couple of great plays.
3. Urlacher, stepped up and lead the way in the 2nd half.
4. Tillman, saved the day in the 1st half.
5. McGowan, went after the ball on that last pick and won the battle, that play was close. If only we had a reciver who went for the ball like that...........

October 8, 2007

#31 Bill said . . .

Al - you're right. That play at the end was a lot closer than I first thought.

I've not read anything about McCarthy's blown challenge. According to Madden and Michels (and I don't necessarily trust them), McCarthy challenged whether or not it was a first down. They actually moved the ball back, but it was a first down anyway. Since the Packers challenge was first down or not, they lost a timeout. Had he simply challenged the SPOT - he woudl have won the challenge - even though it would still be a first down. Then they would have had two timeouts.

Since they never used the one TO they had, maybe the drive woudl have been exactly the same. But who knows.

I've never been impressed with Lovie's decisions on challenges, but this one made sense - except he challenged the WRONG THING!

October 8, 2007

Hey, if Mariotti can write a positive column, doesn't this mean we should be able to get the same out of Mike?

Where are you Mike, it's time to show you can be positive! Or did you bet your kid's college fund on the Packers last night?

Philip, loved the liver comment, mine agrees! Only good news is it's a banker's holiday today! (columbus or some such shit) Stayed up late with a cigar and some rum after the game, enjoying the warm glow (from the game, from the game!)

Best part - being able to tell my son about our win this morning (he had school today and made it just until half time, and I'm sure dreamed all night about the impending loss which it looked like at the time). Able to send him off today with a huge smile on his face, much MUCH better than the tears after the Cowboys game.

Thanks again Bears! The rest of the season awaits! We are Bearimists once again!

#35 Pissed Off said . . .

It may be a bankers holiday in your state but I work inside a bank and let me tell you I'm definitely at work today.

Regarding the McCarthy issue you guys are discussing, or maybe I'm off topic but I thought Favres clock management on that last drive of the game was bad. Even if they had one more timeout I'm not sure it would have mattered. He was dink and dunking and so they may have had another 10 yards before the last play had they had an extra timeout, but again I dont think it would have mattered. I was just watching the drive while Favre stood in shotgun formation yelling out stuff, stalling. Had I been a packer fan I would have been screaming at my TV yelling "hike the damn ball already" as the precious seconds just ticked away. Favre looked bad on that drive.

October 8, 2007

#36 Phil from SATX said . . .

Hey,#33 was me. PO'd, totally agree with you about the clock management thing. Most teams go for the sideline routes, which Favre of all people can definitely throw, with the occasional pass/run in the middle to throw off the defense. This one was telegraphed the whole way, and they just let all the time bleed off. But it kind of went along with the dazed and confused look of the Packers O in the entire second half - still not sure what exactly caused that.

What a game last night!

One of my favorite things is that even when Hester doesn't touch the ball, he's a huge part. I'll take the ball at the 40 or 45 anyday.

That first half was hard to watch. Mainly the first drive.

But the way they played in tha second half, for maybe the first real time all season long, I felt like I was watching the Chicago Bears.

Briggs, Urlacher, Tillman and the D Line really stepped it up in the second half.

As for Griese, great game. He made that one mistake on the intercetion, but I'm not going to put much on him for that.

A few nice tosses to Olsen, and he hit Clark when he was wide open....

Great win last night...I doubt many of us were very confident going into the second half...considering we gave up 341 yards in the first half. But that is why there are two halves of football.

Great to see the defense causing turnovers, and the offense actually taking advantage of them for the most part.

Let's hope that Benson and the O-line can start clicking. I was much happier this week that the run-pass ratio was evened out, and that we continued to try and run the ball even though it wasn't working so well. That is how we are going to have to win games, and I think eventually, the running game will come on and that will open things up even more offensively.

Kudos to Des Clark for being our best offensive player so far this year...to Olsen for his breakout game...to Hester for throwing that crusing block...to Briggs for dominating...and to Peanut for the strips.

Bring on Minny.

Stayed up late to (hopefully) watch the hated Cowboys get beat. Fucking Bills are useless. 5 Romo picks, a fumble and those bigheaded bastards still win.

At least Dick Jauron isn't our problem anymore.

Watched yesterday's game again, even more impressed. Totally agree with Beardown about Des Clark being the offensive MVP of the season so far with unparalleled hands and ability to get open. But Greg Olsen looks like he's ready to challenge for that immediately - btw wasn't it Mike who wanted to constantly remind us that Olsen hasn't done anything yet and wouldn't have an impact in his rookie season? THAT comment's going to have to be adjusted.

Some really nice play calling too, and I loved swing passes to McKie and AP when Hester was decoying - Grease is very good at those short passes.

Hope we get a chance at Cowboys again sometime this postseason. The defense has woken up and remembered how to get turnovers, and if the Bills can get 5 we can get 10.

Be afraid Vikings. Be very afraid. Monster's comin to get ya.

just one of the strangest games you'll ever see tonight. two years in a row, on monday night football, a quarterback has had an ALL TIME AWFUL performance and his team managed a win. dallas might just have the magic the bears had last year.

ya know fella's. I watched the first 3 quarters of the Cowboys game. (then had to go to class) and there were some weird things going on.

1. The Cowboys QB had 6 turnovers and they still won.
Last year the Bears QB had 6 turnovers and they still won.

2. The Bills had 2 INT return for touchdowns and a kickoff returned for a touchdown.
Last year the Bears had 2 Fumble returns for touchdowns and a Punt returned for a touchdown.

3.This was MNF for week 5 of the season and the Boys were away.
Last year it was MNF for week 6 of the season and the Bears were away.

4. The Bills and Boys combined for 9 total turnovers
Last year, the Bears and Cards combined for 8 total turnovers.

5. Final Score of this game 25-24
Last years final score was 24-23

6. The Boys are now 5-0 and the Bills are 1-4.
Last year, The Bears were 6-0 and the Cards were 1-5.

Just food for thought

As the week progresses an we keep wondering what might have been if Jones was here. Here's a lil tidbit to chew on while we wait for Jerry Angelos"special"RB to come alive

The Jets just can't run the ball. They gave Thomas Jones a four-year, $20 million contract including $12 million guaranteed, but he's been a huge disappointment. He had 13 carries for only 36 yards yesterday. His longest run was seven yards. He is averaging only 58 yards per game and 3.3 yards per carry.

I wonder which RB misses the other the most?

Shady, Max, shades of the Lincoln/Kennedy connection, huh? That is pretty weird. If there is any significance there, it would be that Cowboys would have a repeat of the Bears season last year, which in this case would mean cruising to the SB and getting crushed by the Patriots. Which is a totally possible and even probable scenario.

It's up to us to change that this year. Yes it will be a more difficult climb for us this year, and surely our postseason games will have to be played in enemy stadiums, but that will all serve to make us tougher and ready to slay the dragon when we get to the Super Bowl, and shock the world.

Cowboys are a good team but not a great team. Bears have greatness within, it needs to emerge, and that process has started.

Time to sharpen our fangs and feed our growing atavistic hunger on some cartoon sailors with horns.

Decatur, your last line is reminiscent of Madden's comment in the Bears game, about guessing that Benson wished he had a little help from Jones to take the pressure off. The thing is, I think he does have help, in the form of AP. I think they should just continue deploying those guys together, maybe with Ced still getting the majority of the carries. I still think that AP tends to make the most of his touches.

What did you think about their report on Angelo saying the only reason Jones was traded was because they couldn't get along in the locker room? He said money wasn't an issue. That kind of sounded like he was making excuses and trying to deflect the heat he's getting for making that move. A little cheesy in my opinion, and a little throwing Benson under the bus on national TV. Did anyone else have similar thoughts?

#53, Shady, yeah I know, Griese last week vs. the Lions. But even Romo was worse than Griese was last week, well I guess not cuz Griese lost the game for us, Romo came back and won it for the boys. And I dont want to hear shit from anyone cuz shady started this.

I'm not quick enough to the blog in the morning, you all stole my thunder, I was going to say that the cowboys are last years Bears. That Monday nighter was reminiscent of something I've seen before but our defense was so much better then theirs.....have fun losing in the super bowl.

I don't mean to kill the good mood, but I brought up an important topic in the last post, and I need to reiterate:

What is wrong with our offensive line? This is a serious, serious problem. Yes, we'd all like to see more from Benson, but I feel like we can't even make a fair judgement on him with terrible blocking he has received this year. The way I see it, there are three players on the line--Tait, Miller and Brown--who are performing at a totally unacceptable level. They get pushed back on every running play, and they are the ones who blow their blocks on passes. Obviously we can't replace these guys this year, so something has to be done, and I don't know what.

Help us, Lovie!! Do Something!

I dislike the Cowboys greatly, so I did not enjoy last night. You can't really compare Romo to either Griese or Rex. For starters, we would happily trade both of them for him right now. Grossman's miscues were habitual, this is a one game (so far) issue for Romo, while Griese has one crap game and one solid game to his record, so you can't compare anyone to him, as we have no idea who he is yet.

I had asked earlier where PIB, Mike, and Viva have been. Without their appearance I will wager three guesses.

PIB - Still in a corner crying. Will return to state that we are DELUSIONAL if we think that game meant anything

Mike - our victory has forever shattered the foundation of his negative outlook on life and he is too busy to post as he running around doing good to all men and placing bets on the Bears winning the SB.

Viva - speaking of placing bets. . . Viva is probably homeless and begging for $ after his financial loss, but with a silly grin.

I watched the game again last night. I was struck - and almost sickened - by the tone of Michaels and Madden and Collingsworth after it was over. They were so somber you'd think someone died. Litterally. It seemed like they were honestly depressed that the Packers lost. One of them (Michaels I think) said in a voice-over "A night that started out so beautifully ended (with the Bears winning, or something like that.) Now it's just semantics, but he DIDN'T say it started out beautifully for the Packers or for Favre - he said it started out beautifully - period. As though he figured EVERYONE (except Bear fans) though the fact the Packers were winning was "beautiful" and then the Bears had ot go and spoil it. I'm not just venting as a Bear fan - and I'm not being overly sensitive either. Their attitudes and expressions on their faces showed honest shock and DISAPPOINTMENT.

VERY unprofessional.

By the way, my son gave me a lot of detail about his trip up their. Besides the "Bears Still Suck" chanting, another growing insult is FIBs - as in F'ing Illinois Bastards. They tried to counter by saying "do you have ANY idea how much money us "FIBs" spend up here? Lake Geneva, Door County, Milwaukee for Summerfest, Alpine Valley for concerts, etc." They didn't care. His friends said "If 9/11 happened in Chicago, you Cheeseheads probably wouldn't care." They didn't say yes OR no to that.

I told him, don't ever try to get into a battle of wits with people that are unarmed.

Serious - the stadium was a joke - BENCHES?? The face value of the ticket was $60 in the end zone. To sit on BENCHES?? This was a renovated stadium and it looks like a college stadium. Green Bay is a college town with the PAckers being the "College" team. The stadium is right by strip malls and near houses and apartments - like a college stadium. My son said it's a REAL fine line between that being kind of neat or kind of pathetic.

October 9, 2007

#67 Phil from SATX said . . .

FIB's is an old classic - I remember that from my youth. I kind of liked Flatlanders too. Whatever, I do have to say despite what some of our faithful spew about Wisconsin, it is my favorite state in the country, because of the northwoods. It's also kind of a silly, light-hearted goofy bastardish type state, full of brats and beer and lime vodkas sours sold at ridiculously low prices (at least they used to be). Ice fishing, fish fries, giant plastic loons and Hiawathas. What's not to like? (maybe the Packers, huh?) The reason they hate the FIB's is because they rely on us (speaking as a former FIB) to feed them, and it is a truism - in all tourist traps, the townies hate the tourists. They hate having to rely on the out-of-towners for their fortunes.

Regarding the Cowboys game, I wonder if there is any fodder in that game for opponents - are there ways to make Romo throw those picks. It didn't seem to happen in our game and we had a ferocious rush on, better than the Bills, so I don't know. I do think we'll know how good the Cowboys really are when they face the Patriots next week, I'm really hoping and expecting the Patriots to bring it and put a real beatdown on them. It better happen. I also think if you're a defense facing the Cowboys, you get your hands ready, because there will be pick chances aplenty, you just have to take advantage of them - the Bears didn't. Here's hoping we get another chance.

PO'd: What the hell is your deal with Griese? I would say you are becoming unreadable, but that word connotes an insult to you and that is not my intent, so, instead I will say "I'm really tired of hearing you bash our starting QB, even after he performs very well". Do you hear us bash Grossman just because? The decision has been made. Deal with it. Grossman being pulled = sour grapes for you. We get it.

You almost sound like Mike, finding a negative from two weeks ago after we just beat the fucking Packers. Why can't you just hope Griese's finally shaken off the rust and will continue to perform like he did in the second half against the Vikings this week? I know the rest of us are hoping that, as opposed to hoping he'll fail for a few games just so Grossman gets another shot and you can say "I told you so".

By the way, are the Bills the most pathetic franchise in all of sports or what?

It's funny I too thought of the Arizona game last year when watching the game last night. It's weird how that works.
Though I also thought of Dick Jauron and the many, many times that same senario played out when he was coach of the Bears. The New England game in '02, packer game '02, and Rams game '03 come to mind amongst others. The Bears would get up by two scores and it didn't matter if it was still in the 1st quarter they would still try and run out the clock.

#71 Phil from SATX said . . .

Just for another angle, a friend here from Chicago just reported on her brother's experience traveling up to the game - he had a great time and was treated well, had beers with Packer fans, so it probably somewhat of a random thing. I remember from our years at Soldier Field that there were mostly great fans but certainly some local assholes that stood out (unfortunately one of which had permanent seats next to us - Section 17, Row 14, Seats 17-18 - now long gone as the remaining Chicago based family members could not pony up for the PSLs with the new stadium - what a tragedy).

Bottom line, we've got some assholes, they've got some assholes, most are good people. I still have on my short list of things to do before I die watching a game at Lambeau - although it'd probably be a lot more fun if it weren't a Bears game so I could just cheer along with the rest of the Cheeseheads.

October 9, 2007

#72 Bill said . . .

They found a few nice people - such as a couple who got their tickets from her father who had been on the waiting list forever. Certainly a city the size of Chicago will have a lot of people whose behavior is as bad or worse. I guess part of the deal is it being a Sunday night game with a whole day of tailgating. A lot different than a noon start woudl be.

At least they are Packer fans becasue of where they live. The Chicago based Packer fans that have NO connection to Wisconsin are the ones that puzzle me.

Yea I am still worried about the O-Line too. There just is not much that Ced can do considering the blocking. He had one 6 yard gain where I remember he probably shed 5 tackles. - cant remember when, I was in Vegas and seeing double. But some people said it before, even if you have a bad running game, you need to still use it to your advantage. It was so important, not only in that brilliant 3rd and 2 call, and great checkdown by Griese (no way Rex makes that), but just in keeping the Defense fresh so that we do not get trounced in the 4th quarter yet again.

From here on out I do not care if we have 10 carries for 5 yards in the first half, we need to get Ced 23 carries for us to win.

Al, although I think I've commented on this exact thing before, I'm still very impressed with your memory of past Bear losses. I think I have blanked those from my mind. My Cowboys buddy who was gleefully phoning me this morning remarked about Jauron looking like a zombie - it's true! The walking dead.

Generally a way too conservative coach, then when he needed to be conservative at the end to go up by two scores, he calls a corner throw for his second game rookie. Dumb shit. We loved him at first as an antidote to the brainless Wanny (and I really mean that literally, I don't think Wanny has a brain in there, just some Allequippa coal), but he couldn't get it done, and didn't get it done with a remarkable lack of flair or zip - and now he's more of a zombie than ever.

I'd give anything to have tape on that Lovie halftime speech. The sunning lizard thing is just a ruse, I'm sure of it.

Concerning treatment by opposing fans:

I attended the Bears/Bills game at Soldier last year with 3 old friends from my college days. 2 of us were Bears fans and 2 were Bills fans. The tailgate party and trip into the stadium was brutal for my Bills friends. They were heckled unmercifully and received their share of obscene comments and jestures. The beginning of the game was a little rough too. However, as the Bills fell farther and farther behind, the Bears fans around us become almost stmpathetic. One guy with season tickets commented that after being there loyally through all the crap Bear seasons he knew where they were and felt bad for them. The walk out was similar, a few jerks but most people were nice enough (considering it was a blowout). So I kind of saw both types of receptions on one trip. My favorite quote was from a guy a few rows back who told my friends that he "hoped the Bills brought some KY 'cause we're about to get up in ya". The bottom line is that if you're a fan going into enemy territory, hope for decency but don't count on it. To some degree, if you wear an opposing jersey into somebody else's house, you deserve what you get.

Rancid, to piggyback your comment I have gone to the Bears/Vikes game the last 6 or 7 years in a row (cant remember but the first game I went to we won 13-6 or something like that, I think 2001) but anyway the first two years I went I wore normal clothing over my jersey until we got to our seats (me and my wife and friends, theres usually 4 of us that go). There are always some obscene jerks shouting but its really few and far between in MN. I remember getting a couple dirty looks at restaurants afterwards but no one really ever says anything on the plaza before the game or inside. Its usually a great atmosphere there and tons of Bear fans (which makes up for having the worst NFL stadium ever) so maybe thats why theres no real amount of jerks. I see where your coming from but I have never been to any other football stadium.

October 9, 2007

#83 Pissed Off said . . .

There are plenty on here who ripped Grossman no matter what he did the week before or months before for that matter, so I am just returning the favor. Did I say you attacked Rex to defend Griese, though I am confident that you have I dont think at any point during this debate I said that. I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

October 9, 2007

#84 mikebdot said . . .

PO'd: I'm "getting at" your notion that it's a two way street. There has to be a similarity to make said claim. I should have been more explicit. Even if you had not laughed you could have defended Grossman by defending Grossman. You know, rather than dumping on Griese. In response I said "why dump on Griese" and in doing so never dumped on Grossman, so there is no parallel and thus no "two way street". The people that have dumped on Grossman were pissed off because of the high expectations and dashed hopes (pure conjecture on my part), whereas the Lions game was Griese's first start in two years. They gave Griese the benefit of the doubt in his first game back, just like you gave Grossman the benefit of the doubt in his 20th/21st and 22nd start during the first few weeks of the season (like I was also doing, if you'll recall, see below).

I am on the record saying Grossman should have received one or two more games to prove his worth, but since they pulled him there ain't much I can do about that and shall root my heart out for Griese. I said we should give Griese a few games at least to evaluate, so as to be fair and prevent knee-jerk reactions, like the folks you so despise regarding Grossman.

October 9, 2007

#85 Pissed Off said . . .

I think I'm following now but why is it such a bad thing to dump on Griese to defend Rex? And why do you care? I like Rex and still think he's the better QB and should be out there. We went to the SB with the guy. I dont think Rex was given a fair enough shake. If Berrian doesnt drop the TD VS Dallas I think he starts in Detroit the next week. They are both QBs on this team. I think BGs performances will be compared to that of Rex, and if they are not they should be because we replaced the opening day starter so if he's (BG) not better he should not be in there and VS the Lions he was horrid. If someone says Rex sucks I can give proof of something BG did that also sucks to even it out. I could just reply with "oh yeah, well Rex did this so I proved your wrong" but its much more fun to use Grieseball. And again, I'll go back to the fact that BGs performances should be compared to Rex's cuz he replaced him. Thats what I'm doing, when someon puts Rex down I'll compare him to BG to prove that he is not better or at least for as long as I can, which after last season will be quite a while. BG needs to lead us to the SB and win us playoff games, Rex did it and played well VS NO and Sea. I will support BG as long as he's in there but that doesnt take away from my gut feeling that Rex should be out there.

If you dont want to read me anymore, fine, it wont hurt my feelings. I just really deep down think Rex gives us a better shot, especially when it comes to things like playoff games against elite teams. I'm petty, I get it but I will say that each good BG performance makes me forget Rex a bit more. I have enjoyed the back and forth. BTW I never said YOU in particular dumped on Rex (I dont think I did) but others (shady, etc in the past) have. So by it being a "two way street" I'm not talking you in particular, I'm talking bloggers who rip Rex but dont want me to rip BG. Is any of this rambling making sense?

Griese is doing a hell of a job out there. everyone is hating on Griese but I believe that he is going to bring more wins to this team than sexy rexy. rex has had his chance and blew it. Now we need to look for a future qb for the future. We should pick up Jordan Palmer. He played decent with UTEP last year. This guy cannot do worst than Sexy Rexy.

yes ive put alot of thought in bg......he's 100 times better tha grossmam Mr.Jack Scratch. If the defense gets healty and they have the same tools that grossman has had the past 2yrs. he will get us to the promise land of a superbowl[ maybe]. with the defense of last year even urlacher at qb, we w0uldve gotten to the superbowl.....BG is in a hole right now that grossman got us into and he'll have to dig us out of. oh and by the way, BG did not lose us the game, the team lost us the game. recivers dropped balls or balls went threw their hands. for a qb to come into a game without a running game and a 2nd and 3rd string defense he did a hell of a job. yes he had 3 int but he also threw a couple of tds too. he was rusty for it being his first start in 2yrs. how about the game against greenbay, what is your evaluation on that, who won that game for us. was that just a fluke or is he improving on managing the ball. i think he is improving and he'll win us more games. in my opionion bg has a better chance in make this team better by his years of experience. all bears fans need to give him a chance a support him like we all did with grossman. all im saying is that the team is better off with bg than with grossman and that we should be looking into the future of our qb situation. bg is old and grossman is inconsistent so lets look into someone young and coachable. as for Jordan Palmer, hes a good qb with a strong arm, hes young and has a heisman brother name Carson Palmer. Maybe Jordan can get some pointers from his older brother and develope into a good qb...... out

The Worst Car Hire Service
When David Schwartz left university in 1972, he set up Rent-a-wreck
as a joke. Being a natural prankster, he acquired a fleet of beat-up
shabby, wreckages waiting for the scrap heap in California.
He put on a cap and looked forward to watching people's faces as he
conducted them round the choice of bumperless, dented junkmobiles.
To his lasting surprise there was an insatiable demand for them and
he now has 26 thriving branches all over America. "People like driving
round in the worst cars available," he said. Of course they do.
"If a driver damages the side of a car and is honest enough to
admit it, I tell him, `Forget it'. If they bring a car back late we
overlook it. If they've had a crash and it doesn't involve another vehicle
we might overlook that too."
"Where's the ashtray?" asked on Los Angeles wife, as she settled
into the ripped interior. "Honey," said her husband, "the whole car's the
ash tray."
