JB put on a show last week with his commentary prognostication of Bears/Packers, coming closest with his 26-20 final score guess. Here's his comment. I bolded the good stuff:
Favre reverts back to '05 Brett and commits 3 turnovers, one fumble forced by Mark Anderson, one silly ball in the air INT to Daniel Manning, and one nice pick by 54.The offense doesn't have far to go all day and gets it in the endzone twice, to B-Twice and Adrian Peterson, along with a solid day from Robbie Gould who adds 4 field goals. Player of the game is Desmond Clark with 8 catches for a buck 10. Packers score a late TD to make it interesting but the offense runs the clock out to seal a 26-20 W.
It ain't perfect, but who is. We've done the contest twice...both victories...the tradition continues. Get the final score and win the Wednesday column. As for me?
YOUR 2007 CHICAGO BEARS 29
THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS 10
Why do I like the Chicago Bears this week?
1. I always like the Chicago Bears.
What do I think the Chicago Bears should do this week?
1. Take advantage of a Soldier Field crowd that's going to be floating in on the clouds of Sunday night's comeback at Lambeau. If they start on defense, get a three and out. If they start on offense, throw it down the field. Even if you're unsuccessful, the crowd stays excited. The worst way to let the air out of the balloon would be to run the ball into the middle of a damn good rush defense twice and face a 3rd and long early.
2. Stack the box. Stop the run. Make Tarvaris Jackson beat you. It is one of the most overused phrases in football analysis (Make __ beat you!) but this is Tarvaris Jackson. If he's forced into definite passing situations, he'll fold quicker than a poker player holding deuce six off-suit. That means sacks, interceptions...blowout.
3. Use the perimeter early. Throw the ball in the flat and make their corners tackle in space. If you don't spread these guys out and soften up their front seven, the run game won't be there late in the game.
4. Make them go 90 plus. When you're starting every drive at your own 35, there's no excuse for every punt going into the endzone. Brad Maynard has had a subpar year kicking the ball and Sunday he comes out of it. Pin these guys deep, Brad. If Tavaris can take em 90, at least we'll all know to make plans in January to do other things when football is on.
Now somebody win the damn column.

BG with 190 and a TD
And either the D or Hester take one back.No back, be it Benson or AP, is goin to be exceptional running the ball against this defense.

#8 Northside Superfan said . . .Vikings have lost 3 in a row and we are going to make it 4. Stupid Darren Sharper is firing up the tight ends and stupid Bobby Wade is firing up the defense. This is not only a bad team but apparently a stupid team. I still think they could score a touchdown on us with an Adrian Peterson breakaway - we've seen that kind of stuff happen before when our defense is depleted, which it will be on the inside on Sunday. They're good at kicking field goals because they've had a lot of practice at it.
They also seem to be good at holding opponents to low points - also a hallmark of past Vikings teams.
I'm giving them 13 points - 1 AP TD and 2 field goals. We're putting up 24 - all offense. Two rushing TDs and one Bradley TD (how bout that for a pick?) - with the Bears set up on the 50 from a nifty Hester runback, Bradley will catch a crossing route at about the 35 and outrun everybody into the end zone, kind of like what we would see Berrian do last year. Ced doesn't have a big numbers game, but like last week, the yards come when needed, and especially near the end zone where Ced seems particularly effective.
Bears 24 Vikings 13
Bears go .500, Soldier Field rocks, plenty of excitement going into Philly next week.
Over/under on enemy posters coming in and talking smack - 1 - and I'm taking the under - they're scared now, they really are! And Mike has proven that he was an imposter, just someone posing as a Bears fan! We got like 3 victories in 1 in that dismantling of the Favre mystique up in GB! Let's face it, that was worth the price of admission for this season all by itself!
GO BEARS!

#9 jeff said . . .Bears 30
Vikings 71. The only Vikings TD will come when Adrian Peterson (of the Vikings) breaks a long run. Otherwise the Vikes running attack will stay under control.
2. The Bears will score 3 TDs. One will be a 15-25 yard play action pass play caught by either Olsen or Clark, 1 will be a run from inside the 10 by Benson, and Hester will score either on a return, an end-around or a big run after catching a quick pass from BG.
3. 3 Robbie Gould Field Goals--1 will be set up by a nice return from Hester. 1 will be set up by a nice long drive that fails to make it into the End Zone and 1 by a turnover forced by the D in Vikes territory.
4. The defense will turn in an outstanding performance, and will force at least 4 turnovers. You will see at least one INT by a linebacker and at least 5 sacks.
5. Similiar to last week, the Bears will commit to the run and eat time off the clock while not having a great game in terms of total yardage.

The D needs to have a confidnece building game, they need to pick off two and take them both to the end zone. They need to sack the QB 5 times, and make him fumble. I want near perfection. I want this game dominated by the defense and I want the Vikes held under 150 yards total offense. This needs to be the statement game where this D gets healthy on a bad Vikings offense all at home with crowd roaring. Confidence will be built for this team that will carry us into bye unbeaten from here on out.

Queens 16Similar game from CB. Low y/c but he gets the job done and scores a TD. Rashied gets a TD out of the slot and Olsen gets the other (he outleaps Sharper in tight coverage). Robbie goes 2-2 on field goals, one set up by a Hester punt return.
Vikings get liitle offense other than AP who has a nice game against us. 130+ yards and a TD. The rest of his decent drives are stalled and result in FGs. Jackson throws 2 picks before he leaves the game injured and is replaced by Holcomb who is sacked 3 times.

#14 AfroCelt said . . .In an early battle of field goals, Robbie (what a kicker name) blasts 5 as the O stalls out inside the 30 for most of the day. We go into half with a 12-6 lead. First drive out of the locker room Gould blasts his last of the day. Things get interesting with a busted coverage letting Sydney Rice into the end zone. 15-13 going into the 4th. We exchange 3 and outs for the first few series of the 4th and (in a blast from the past) Bobby Wade muffs a punt inside his own 10. We recover and Ced sniffs out the endzone for the decisive score.

#15 Bob Avellini said . . .Bears 24 - Vikings 17 .
The Bears will start off with precisly what you fear, a run-run-pass-punt combo that we all know and hate. They'll do it to "set up the pass", though it really isnt necessary. The offense will find their groove around the second quarter mark with a 7+ minute drive with 50/50 run/pass...the running will surprisingly start working after 2-3 medium passes to the TEs and a WR. They'll score on that drive and 1-2 times in the seond half, with one coming off of an INT or a FUMBLE by the defense (its the BEARS D, never count em out.)
The Vikings will have exactly one big breakout play, and it will come sometime in the late first quarter. It'll also give them they're first taste of the endzone. the rest will be a kickerfest.
GO BEARS!

Highlights: TD catch for Olsen, one 20+ yd run for Benson, two takeaways, and one "big play" from special teams -- perhaps another blocked FG, last week was the first week without one right? And the D will look the way the D should look.

#17 beardown1982 said . . .You know what I love about this upcoming game? No eyes on us for once. Just a normal divisional game, at Soldier Field, at 12 freaking o'clock, when Bear games SHOULD be played.
It seems like with all the success we've had recently there are no more normal starts. And it also brings up another point about Griese, nice start ;ast Sunday night in a totally high pressure game with all eyes of the world on him. That's dealing with pressure big time. Let's see how he does in a normal setting, with a friendly (sometimes) crowd - I think he may end up bringing more to the table than we ever thought he could.
Here's hoping. I'd love to see a early 2006 Rex-style blowout. No matter what happens with Rex, I'll still never forget the sublime pleasure of those first 5 games in 2006. No one on earth could beat the Bears of those first 5 games.

He's just saying Benson needs to step up because neither Grossman or Griese can win throwing 50 times per game. I buy that. He also notes that he saw Benson 7 times in college and he was the real deal.
Which is again why I say regardless of how Cedric ultimately turns out, the pick at #4 cannot be called a bad decision, nor can you say Angelo can't pick offensive talent based on Benson. There was absolutely no reason to believe he wouldn't be great for Chicago. Maybe he still will, but running backs are a crap shoot too.
That would be an interesting topic, listing which positions are the biggest crap shoots. I think offensive skill positions are the biggest, and much bigger than any defensive position. There've been some major crap-outs for offensive linemen as well (hello Stan Thomas) but it's mostly the skill positions - QB, RB, WR.
October 12, 2007
#28 Pissed Off said . . .Just to echo what Phil said, arguably the biggest 1st round flop in NFL history was Tony Mandrich, an O-Lineman.
Stan Thomas...there's a wasted pick I hadn't thought about in years. As bad as Marc Columbo was with the Bears, I'm shocked he's a starter on Dallas now. Not a very good starter, but a starter nonetheless.

(which is the bulk of his book as I understand) His comments that he makes nowadays about current players, teams and issues are no more valid than comments any sports writers or media member makes (who are probably closer to the team than he is) and he can be ripped for them. I rip plenty of sports writers and radio hosts and national media guys for thier takes so there's no reason to hold back on Sayers. Leif Eriksson, known from Icelandic sagas as a descendant from a line of Norwegian Viking chieftains, who had established the first European settlement in Greenland in about 985, was most likely the first European discoverer of America in about 1000.[4] His initial area of settlement is likely to be L'Anse aux Meadows located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

On punts - Devin tears them up at least once (without scoring) and the rest are shorter 30 yarders.
In other words - the Vikings wind up giving us about 120 yards in the kicking game (1 return by Hester of about40 yards, and then about 10 extra yards each on 5 more punts and 3 kickoffs).

What I like:
The Bears can shut down the best running backs in the game and force teams to throw...The vikings and the other Adrian Peterson will be held to a moderate day ~75 yards...and Tarvaris Jackson can't throw.
The Vikings are too proud to kick away from DH, and they have great coverage units...this is a great matchup.
Griese & the TE's...Rex was good when he used Clark(and he didn't enough, which is why he's on the bench). Griese isn't a great QB, but knows how to pound the TE's...and i like our TE's against any teamWhat I don't like:
Trying to run the ball up the middle against the Williams brothers...I don't have enough confidence in our O-line and CB to think we'll be successful there, our best bet will be a steady dose of the Real Adrian Peterson
Scrambling QB...but TJ is not Tony Romo...so I'm not too worried about itPrediction:
Bears 20
Vikings 0We force 3+ TOers and see Kelly Holcomb at some point...I'll take the Bears defense for one touchdown, Gould for 2/3 in field goals, and a touchdown by the Real Adrian Peterson. DH has a nice day returning punts (& one kickoff)...player of the game...Tommie Harris...I don't care if Matt Birk did go to Harvard, Tommie is going to eat him up.

#71 Bill said . . .How fast are the OLBs for the Queens? If I were Lovie and intent on running the ball I'd run a lot of off-tackle stuff, plus some draws, fake reverses, real reverses, screens, etc... anything but up the middle. Sort of like when the Broncos beat the Packers in SB whatever. Everybody thought the Packers were going to run away with the victory because Denver couldn't run against them. The Packers' strength was that giant fat tackle what's-his-name and Reggie White. Therefore we saw Davis running a ton of off-right-tackle stuff and picking up yardage.

#72 Devin Hester #23 said . . .A guy I used ot work with is a great Vikings fan; I just realized I haven't heard from him for a while; I have ot email him this week after the game. He was a good fan - realiztic but devout; often flew out to Minny from Chicago on game day; bought scalper tickets at the stadium, and then flew home and made work the next day. I admired that. Now he's married. You can guess that stopped. He was a great guy.

Griese: 210 yards, 1TD 1INT
Jackson: 141 yards, 0TD 2INT, 1 FumbleBenson: 77 yards, 1TD
Peterson (theirs): 112 yards, 1TDI think the Vikes score a Peterson TD early, maybe their first drive. They also get a FG early. Our D often takes a quarter to hunker down, but they eventually do. The Bears will trail maybe 10-7 by the end of the 1st quarter, but score a 2nd quarter TD (Olsen?) that puts them ahead.
Early second half sees a TD by Hester or Peanut Tillman (or maybe Chilltown McGowan). Vikes get another FG late in the 3rd but are committing too many turnovers by this point. Bears add another 3 midway through the 4th quarter.
I think Tillman and Briggs get picks. I think one of our RBs fumbles once, but we get Tarvaris to fumble once too (I'll give it to Tommie Harris). Our TEs will play well, catching maybe 10 balls between them. Of our WRs, Mark Bradley has the best day.

I'm overly optimistic about the potential of little Wolfe today, but check out the link and maybe you'll feel pretty good about his chances today too. Great advice for Wolfe comes at at 1:03.
Clearly, Gale Sayers was one of the greatest of all time, but if Garrett can take a page outta his playbook and we can get the guy into open space - I can see him making guys miss all day. I only hope Turner will give Wolfe more than just a couple opportunities to make something happen today.

#92 HesterFan23 said . . .HesterFan23, I don't think Griesie is going to take a whole lot of shots downfield, that's not his game. He wants to control the ball and limit turnovers as much as possible. That being said, I believe Da Bears need to utilize the middle of the field when the Vikes are stacking the box. Olsen dropped a pass that could've gone for big yards.
Chicago needs to STOP THE RUN and force T. Jackson into bad decisions. Sloppy game on both sides so far, the Chicago D needs to have a BIG 2nd half to seal the deal.

Honestly though, it didn't matter who was in the backfield today, any runningback could've broken off huge gains against a D-line that was getting manhandled all day. Fucking Longwell.

#124 Bill said . . .Here's to bracing myself for one of those seasons where we're good enough to beat anyone and shitty enough to lose to anyone.

This hurts worse than losing to GB would have.
First - to any Minny fans on the board" play nice. You have the best RB in the league and he took control like a veteran. You have the right ot be excited. With any decent QB play (like today - no ints) you can win the division as easily as anyone.
But for us - OK, so AP ran wild. Our safeties were simply no match for him, period. We needed to pick it up in every other aspect and we didn't. We needed a pick, a coupel sacks, a fumble - SOMETHING; and the defense failed to answer.
DUMB DUMB DUMB doing the onside kick. DUMB!!!! But Hester bailed us out. And as a poster before me said - we turn around and give it right back to AP - the only gut that's hurt us!! Lovie - I know it's Toub's call but in that situation a head coach LEADS THE TEAM. So it's on you. You don't have a lot of game smarts - that's obvious.
Griese - I want to like him but his INT near the end smacked of panic. He got it back and lucklily Minny let us score but why kill the spirit of the team with a quick INT?? Again - that is not LEADERSHIP, that's just being another inedequate pience of the puzzle.
All in all, we have a long way to go to get back to where we were last year. I dont' understand it - but it's real. Benson did better, but it siply wasn't enough. We're not going to get an AP type runner, so there is no sense making comparisons.
The season isn't over yet though. Clsoe - but not quite. A lot can happen if we paly smarter and better.
The only thing that haunst me though is the realization that the defense isn't nearly as good as last year. Fro whatever reason. After today, I'm not sure we commit big money to anyone - even Briggs.
