Today...The Minutes Seem Like Hours

Sunday, October 7, 2007 | Jeff

Don't believe David Haugh's Mariotti-esque negativity in today's Tribune which includes the excruciating-to-read line, "There isn't much else to look forward to Sunday night for a Bears team lost on offense, hurt on defense and in need of its special teams to save a dying season." There is a great deal to look forward to tonight, David. It is the Chicago Bears. It is the Green Bay Packers. And I don't care how jaded you become as the Bears beat writer for the city's best sports section, it'd take a coma for me not to get juiced for this.

I grew up a Yankees fan and yesterday I was offered a ticket to Game 3...a must-win...tonight...and turned it down. Turned it down to watch the Bears and Packers on television. Why? Because the Yankees could win every World Series until 2025, who cares? I'd sell them finishing in last place for eternity for one Super Bowl title.

The football world expects the Bears to lie down on the tracks tonight and let the Favre train roll on over. Not tonight, football world. Not tonight, Favre. Tonight the hibernation comes to end. And these goddamn Bears are hungry.

I cannot begin to describe how much I want my Bears to rise up and put together the game of their lives tonight. Injuries aside, weak offense aside - I want to believe that pride will overcome their shortcomings and make them focus as never before.

I still feel like the young Packers coudl be feeling overconfident.

However, I also thought Tony Romo woudl melt under the pressure of a real defense.

Sometimes, things just don't turn out the way you want, even if your expectations are realistic.

I go into the game optimistic, but fear the possibilities. But it is Packer day, and so I will not let those negative thoughts come out of my fingers.

I think though we all secretly dread the feeling that will surface if Lovie cannot rally his team. I can hear the questions, the angry answers from Lovie, the calls for Ron Turner to be fired etc.

Yet if they have any sense, the Bears feel it too. And they are the only ones that can stop it from happening - at least this week.

this packer day is going to be all about the bears contrling time of possesion. benson has a big game in him and its time to show it. I want to see 30 carries! if we can do that and hold on to the ball our d will take care of the rest. it comes down to controlling the time of possesion to give our d a little rest and their constant pressure will derail the farve express

Stick a needle in all their big arms. It's the Gatorade that's gonna make or break'em. Inject'em full of the orange flavor and the game is as good as over. Bears will win.

The Green Bay Packers are a solid team this year, not a great team, or even a very good team. They got extremely lucky in week one by getting 10 points gift-wrapped to them by the Eagles punt returner. In week three they had several bizarre play calls by SD and a horrible throw by Rivers on a 3rd and 3 to a wide open reciever that would have allowed them to run out the clock. And then last week against an awful Viking team, it took Holcomb missing a wide open reciever, and a blown pass interference call at the end to pull out a victory.
In other words, they've been lucky more than good, and if you believe these things tend to even out over a full season, they're due for the luck train to run out of gas.
Here's to a reality check!!! Go Bears.

Al in WI: I don't want the train to run out of gas - I want to derail the damn thing and watch it fall into a ditch. I am talkin train wreck from the movie Bridge Over The River Kwai train wreck.

I hear it supposed to be hot tonight. Good - now sweat can be mixed with blood. A great combo in football.

Cedric, in his first handful of runs looks about as bad as I've seen him run. No vision, no big hits. Griese has little if any time to throw. Things are not looking up right now.

How do we go from having good play calling, and then running a draw on 1st and 15, and a 2 yard pass on 3rd and 20?

October 8, 2007

#27 Midway Monster said . . .

Something is up with Urlacher. He is not getting into tackles like he should. He seems to be doing a lot of standing-wrap tackles or catch up to em and pull em down, rather than hits. Almost like he is playing with some back pain.
