Da' Bears Blog

Thank You, Detroit

Friday, November 23, 2007 | Jeff

The Bears are deer in the middle of the highway. A deer that's been hit by car after car after car and yet refuses to die. The Bears aren't a good football team (not even close) yet thanks to the Detroit Lions loss this afternoon, the Bears find themselves a win away from being a game out of the wildcard. You may remember this scenario from the day formerly known as last Friday.

I don't think the Bears are going to the playoffs but thanks to a Detroit team that is going to be underdogs in three of its last six games, the Bears have some air in their lungs. It'll give me enough of a reason to be excited in front of the television Sunday.

CHICAGO BEARS 23
DENVER BRONCOS 18

Note:I've taken the averages of my predictions for each of the Bears four victories to determine this score.

Why do I like the Chicago Bears this week?
1. I always like the Chicago Bears.
2. Because this is the game they've been winning all year. They haven't won the big game...they've won the game before the big game. The big game would be against the Giants at home next week.
3. Because the Bears defense was embarrassed last week and they have to have some pride, right?
4. Because Ron Turner is coming off his worst performance in two years running this offense and he knows that all eyes are on him. He's got to have some pride, right?
5. Let's be honest: there might not be a single, logical football reason to pick the Bears this week. The answer to why this week is a simple one. I can write whatever I like about how disappointing they are, how gutless they play, how poorly they coach...but every Sunday I still think they'll score more points than the other guys.

Nice. Some positive oriented posts sneak in at the end of the #50 tribute/ # retirement campaign post with some hope for Sunday from Jeff to follow. Playoffs? Unlikely? Yeah. Improbable? Uh huh. The Bears' balls are right at the edge of the 'end our season' bandsaw.

But maybe they will play a complete game. Maybe win by one with a near heart attack for us all. Any win is a good win, even when out of the playoffs I am sure almost all of you would prefer another win notched onto the season. Since we haven't been eliminated from the playoffs yet, we need to back them up with some belief that yes they will score more points than their opponent the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Our backs are against the wall and there is no room for error but don't you think one of the six teams that have started 4-6 and made the playoffs since 1990 weren't as talented as these Bears. I like Kool-Aid over reality sometimes and this qualifies as one of those times when things are desperate. Make it a double. In fact I'll have, "One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer". It is only 10-0 from now to the end to win the Super Bowl.

Please don't let our season end this week Chicago Bears. All you Pro Bowlers need to dig deep and find the fire you had those years past and make some jaw jarring plays. Want it more than the other guy. Leave it all out there. Just win.

The Bears won't win the Super Bowl this season. Therefore, we should all hope the Bears lose out, because wins hurt our draft status for next year. Wins at this point will only serve to help save the jobs of those Bears personnel who are responsible for putting us in this hole in the first place.

I will be rooting for the Broncos only because I am such a diehard Bears fan.

I'm with Midway (last post). Everyone at work was singing "Brett Farve this....Brett Farve that...." My answer was, "It's in my blood to hate all things Packers" One person even had the nerve to ask me if the Bears and Packers were rivals (this was a straight man, but he is a 49ers fan. Must be an anomoly)
My reply to him, "Think Normans vs Saxons, Greeks vs Persians or Athenians vs Spartans. Yes, yes Virgil, the Bears and the Packers are the oldest rivals in professional American football."
I'm here to educate.
Honestly, the Bears shouldn't loose if they play to their potential, Ron Turner has an epiphony and suddenly gets it and Lovie stops traveling down de Nile. It's all there, the talent, the ability and the balls. It's up to OUR Chicago Bears!

Cant wait for Sunday, bottom line is we are still in it and a win this week is another step, I know this statement is getting old but we need to win this week or else we are OFFICIALLY done. I dont think teams will keep losing to keep us in the wildcard hunt. I said tw0 weeks ago that we will pass the Lions, if we can win some damn games, because I think they will only win two, at most of thier last 7 and they've lost the last two with 5 left.

On another note it looks like Javon Walker will be back this week, one of the premier WRs in the entire NFL, top 10 for sure, maybe top 5. If Vash doesnt get his ass back on the field this week, he and Brandon Marshall and Stokely will have a field day on this D like the Hawks WRs did last week.

Heywood what you said in #3 is the dumbest thing I've heard in a while, thanks for the laugh. As a Bears fan, and a diehard one, you root for the team to ALWAYS win. I cant believe you even said that. I'd like to hear you try to explain yourself but there is no excuse for what you've said. I hope someone was posing as you.

The Bears are absolutely still in the hunt as we sit here today. I know no one wants to hear it after a loss, but the Bears showed some positive things last week.
Rex Grossman is going to play well again this week, and add some td's to his stat line.
And finally, and I mean finally Cedric Benson is going to have a good game. 100+ yards and a score for 'ole Ced.

You speak of Ron Turner's pride. He'd better come up with something after last week. Two plays last week exemplified his season. On 4th and one he chooses to run the ball directly up the middle, only to be stopped two yards in the backfield. When faced with a similar situation Seattle runs a play action pass. The sad thing was that Seattles 4th and 1 was just as predictable as ours. As our season has gone. All year opposing teams/staffs have been more committed to winning ball games than attempting to prove what type of team they supposedly are. No one cares who we are, were or will be. They care about actually exectuting a fourth and 1. God forbid Ron Turner take it upon himself and call a high percentage play that would include just a pair of balls to call. I guess there is a difference between having a Head Coach that has won a Superbowl, that takes control of his offense. That coach showed up Turner on his 4th and 1. Apparenty mismatches also exist on the sideline.

Sure is quiet around here... Calm before the storm?

Here's something: if you take a look at the win/loss record for this season, with the exception of two games in the beginning of the season, we're alternating between win and lose. In my crazy view of the world, this is good because:
1. We will win tomorrow
2. We will beat Green Bay.

At this point I can't really ask for more than that.

The Bears need to sign Hester to more money. He's in the second year of a deal that pays him $700K per year. If the Bears don't sign him by the end of next year, my sources say he won't sign in his final year and test the market. This guy is the greatest return man in NFL History. Go Bears!

Now, do we really have to give it to the offense? They haven't done anything all day.

So, let's just see a 3rd return for TD from Hester.

Who stole Turner? What great play calling on the last two series!

I was sure they'd run to start overtime with only one reciever, and they caught Denver off guard for a huge play.

Oh, and what to say about Hester. So much for kicking to him :)

This team came together here today and worked through their mistakes... I'm going to be saying Bears in Playoffs here on out. This game is our turning point and this year playoffs (& superbowl?) and leads into a strong push for the future.

BEARS WIN! 'nuff said.

Great to see the offense come through when it counted.

The D goal line stands turn out to be HUGE plays.

Oh yeah, and that Hester guy aint too shabby either!

Not pretty, but who cares what it looks like...

Grossman is our QB. I don't want or need anyone to say it. He had his mistakes. But do you want to tear apart the team again after a win like this now or in the future?

Move over Nicole, I think I'd go gay for Hester now.

This was a memorable win...though it'll be a "gelling" moment when they win next week....

OK that was nice, but enough celebrating.

It's time to get that back-to-back win against the Giants who looked terrible today against Minnesota (Eli 3 pick 6's).

Next week we got Grossman vs. Manning.

Should be interesting.

I don't get much Bears TV coverage where I live, but I was just flying through O'Hare and got a chance to watch the 4th quarter and OT. Have they been singing Bear Down, Chicago Bears all year? That crowd boomed every word of that song after that last TD. It was amazing.

I take back that comment about AP not looking better.

After getting into a groove, he ran hard, and was a huge part of the win.

Looks like we'll see him the rest of the way, that Benson injury didn't look good.

I've never been more negative or angry during a game only to have the Bears win. This was great.
Hester, is there even any words for that he did today. And how sweet is it that f'ing bum Sauerbraun was the victim??? oh yeah!!!!!!!
Hat's off to Rex Grossman as well. Yeah, he needs to hold onto the ball better when he's getting sacked every other play, but he's turned a corner. The old rex would have gotten frusterated by the drops, and paniced by the constant pass rush. Not this guy, he hung in there and delivered with the game on the line. By the way that's the same drive we heard after the philly comeback by Griese, that Rex could never do. He just did it. If our recievers could catch and turnstile miller could block, I believe the Bears would have won without OT.
As it was great night, several others played with great heart as well. Including Tilman, Urlacher, Kruetz and AP. Great win, great win, We live!!!
Go Bears!!!!!!!!!

What a game.....If I did not have so much emotional investment in this game I would have enjoyed what turned into a "nintendo" like performance by both teams. Watching live was excruciating until the Bears prevailed. But watching the game again - that was a tremendous game. The D gave up two long drives and a long pass that should not be allowed by what is supposed to be a GREAT D. They came through in the clutch however and Tillman's blocked punt was to me the BIGGEST play of the game Devin Hester withstanding. After another ugly fumble, Grossman was impressive in driving the O to a couple of late TD's. Seems like if they block for him and the receivers hold on to the ball, He plays with confidence back there. So there is still some life in this season. How about a 6 game winning streak? Go Bears!
