Hester and Hope

Monday, December 17, 2007 | Jeff

Jay Mariotti writes another good column in today's Sun-Times (what's he been drinking lately?) bringing up a lot of the off-season issues that have been discussed on this website over the last few weeks. I usually prefer to avoid discussing the off-season until the off-season but with Washington's thumping of the Giants last night, the off-season is officially upon us.

So why am I not depressed? I know the Bears desperately need a professional safety. I know they need help on the offensive line. I know they need a running back and will probably be in the market for a quarterback. I know that Brian Urlacher has played like a shell of his formal self. I know the Bears could lose their best wide receiver and tackler to free agency. So again...why am I not depressed?

Devin Hester. He Gone. The Skunk. Ridiculous. Devin Hester is the most exciting player to wear the navy and burnt since Walter Payton and when Hester's on the field, the Bears have a chance. Hester is a hope for an organization and fan base that desperately needs it. How many NFL teams can boast to have a player that is the greatest ever at what they do? People will argue for Brady and Manning but there's no arguing against Hester. He's the greatest kick returner in the history of the league and he's slowly becoming a dynamic player at wide receiver. No matter what needs the Bears must address in the next nine months, they know that September 2008 they'll be getting the ball at the forty.

Forget Kyle Orton and his 182 passing yards tonight. Forget Hungry Like the Wolfe and his 19 carries for 41 yards. Tonight the story is Hester. Every night the story is Hester as long as he's a Chicago Bear. There's only one positive to the defense being as bad as they are: we get to see more of #23.

As for tonight....

CHICAGO BEARS 20
MINNESOTA VIKINGS 19

Why do I like the Chicago Bears tonight?
  1. I always like the Chicago Bears.
  2. Hester.

35-31 Bears....the stars align and the bears light up the score board in a head scratcher, sending bears fans into wondering if Kyle Orton is indeed the QB of the future.

Adrian Peterson goes down in the 4th quarter with a torn knee that he will, sadly, have to retire from. Brett Favre will come down to help carry him off the field and throw out his back, calling his retirement soon after. Calvin Johnson will laugh at these misfortunes and do a dance in his living room where he slips and breaks his ankle.

Just trying to make myself happier through the pain of others...

And what was that Brian Westbrook play yesterday? He cost me a fantasy football championship.

If the Bears do manage a win, it'll be a nail biter. I'll sit on the edge of my couch and repeatedly want to change the channel for the sheer tension of it.

God, I love football!

Living here in Vi-Queen land has become much more annoying since the rise of Adrian Peterson and the maturity of the Vikings defense. I've said it before and I will say it again, tonight will be a reminder of what the Bears were "last year". Kyle Orton will not be the QB of the future. I am tired of pinning my hopes on a QB who had a couple of good years in college but has proved nothing in the National Footbal Leage. The Bears problems are not found in the QB position. If that was the case they wouldn't have won the NFC last year. No they are found in the trenches and in the backfield. I am glad that the Bears are coming here. I hope they win, and I believe they have a chance. But what I hope really happens out of this trip is that Lovie Smith and the coaching staff look across the field and see the team they were last year. Not in the Blue and Orange jerseys but in the putrid, Purple and Gold. I believe Rex Grossman can and should be the QB for Chicago. And I have come along way with that belief. I was ready to send him on the first United flight out of Chicago around week 3. But we saw something when he left. We saw a team that struggled with back-up QB's. Why? Not because of the talent but because of respect. The players on this team respect Grossman for helping them get to the Superbowl last year. I believe he could do it again with a healthly line, dynamic running back and a dominate defense. Let's all just admit that this organization blew it by trading Thomas Jones and letting Ron Rivera go. It reminds me of the 1987 season. I just wish someone had the balls to stand up and admit it from the front office. GO BEARS!

the 87 bears and 88 bears were good football teams. they didnt hit a down slope until 89 when they went 6-10. this bears team has just fallen off the cliff instead of taking the slow decline.

Mikeb, I do hate Griese and he did single handedly lose games for us and sadly I feel that he still gives us a better chance to win tonight than Orton. Its not that confusing.

Seriously your picking the Bears tonight? Do you or under what circumstance will you pick against them? If any, this is it. That said Bears will probably win.....no not really but I sure hope so.

Win or lose, I look forward to writing my last post game column tonight. Its been fun and I hope Jeff will allow me to be back next year or even allow me an occassional column during the offseason.

Commenting on JB's #1 - I really enjoyed watching the Cowboys lose yesterday. And I will admit to having a really fun moment watching it with my son as we kept turning and looking at each other with a little grin as the Cowboys suffered injury after injury. The grins were small because we both knew we shouldn't be wishing injury on anyone, but still... It was the Cowboys game that decimated so many defensive Bears players and, it could be argued, lost us our season right there. They have been very fortunate on injuries as most teams with great records have, and we couldn't help ourselves.

And the Westbrook decision at the end was unbelievable. One of the coolest things I have seen, that a player could be so smart and aware and selfless all in the spur of the moment. I have total respect for that man, and today I love the Eagles for being tough and beating the hated Cowboys.

This has been an enormously disappointing season, and it's easy to get down on everything.

But I think a combination of fundamental problems have really made it difficult to gauge a lot of positions. I really don't believe the Bears have as many needs as some of the press is suggesting.

The O-Line has been a problem and really needs to be the focus in the offseason, but that's made it difficult to judge the rest of the offensive performance. Benson clearly underperformed, and I think we'll pick up a free agent RB or draft one to compete for the starting role (unless wolf is stellar in the last few games) , but how much of the poor running performance is the line and how much the back?

The Defense has been decimated by injuries, and is lacking depth, but to some extent that is a function of its success over the last 3 or so years, to get playmakers at the starting positions, you end up having to pay them and that limits your depth.

We clearly need a long term replacement for Mike Brown, it'll be next season before we really know how bad Urlachers back is, I think a lot of our draft picks will go against defensive needs again.

I would hope that the bears will make a clean break from Ron Turner at the end of the season and can quickly identify his replacement, so they can build around whatever system he wants to put in place.

Jeff, don't worry about space filling in the offseason...i'm sure myself, po'd, al, phil, midway, etc will have more than enough to say to fill volumes once again.

#12 Willie from Chicago said . . .

Jeff, this is a great post! The Bears are technically still in it but its pretty impossible (as hard as it is for me to admit it) The only way for us to make the playoffs is for Carolina and Detroit to loose 1 more, Washington to loose out and Minnisota to beat Washington and loose to Denver. We would also have to win out so WERE DONE.

But Jeff is right about Devin Hester, he keeps the Bears in football games and gives them great field position every time. I think the team should build there offense on Hester too.

Next year we should re- sign Rex to a fairly cheap deal (with incentives) and put Kyle Orton as our backup and let him compete for the starting job.

Im not depressed either, this was one of the most exciting seasons of Bears football that I have ever seen. Lets Finish it off by winning our last three games, getting to 8-8 and getting much needed momentum for next year (look what it did for the Packers).

But on a completely different note: congrats to the Miami Dolphins for winning there first game of the season.

I am so disappointed in this team and the coaching staff.

Willie I watched that video of the 2007 NFC Championship and still cannot believe how far this team has fallen so fast.

It is so frustrating and annoying and needs to be corrected this offseason!

It sucks when your football team sucks and plays meaningless games in Dec!

#14 Pissed Off said . . .

No one thought this team would play the way they have this year. It would have been nice to have "second half rex" all year. That alone would have put us in a position to make the playoffs. If only a few other things would have come together. Oh well.

As weird as it seems, that scenario from Willie isnt the toughest thing in the world for us to make the playoffs but the kicker is.....we have to win out. If we can do that I like our chances. Det and Car will lose one more, Carolina probably both but Det plays at home VS KC then at GB. Wash will lose to Min next week then I think they finish with Dallas. And Denver CAN beat MN. We just cant win out. Wouldnt it be great though if the D played out of their minds and Orton played "managed" football. Then Rex gets back in for the last game or playoff game and we hit the playoffs on a roll. Ok snap out of it.............

Yes, Hester is a marvel to watch on the field during punt and kick returns, but I doubt he will get many touches in that department for the rest of the season.

I know this next comment is going to bug some of you, but, as for Hester's play on offense, he is like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz - "If I only had a brain..." His football IQ sucks. They need to have him crash the playbook and work with the other receivers constantly if he is ever going to show any offensive intelligence, e.g. where to line up, hot routes and what pattern to run after a play is called.

As for Kyle Orton, the deck is stacked against him tonight - he is being set up to fail. However, that is the life of a 3rd string QB and he will just have to live with the chance provided to him regardless of the crappy situation. Nonetheless, I am hopeful that he shows some promise tonight.

As for the rest of the team and its problems, it has all been said before - re-build the O Line, etc.

Finally, someone should tie Ron Turner up and throw him into the lake.

Over/under is set a 43 pts.

I'll take the under.

As much as I'd love to see a bearded offensive explosion tonight, I just don't see it happnin'.

Remember how ugly last game was during prime-time? Well this one could be worse. I would assume the Bears defense is drooling to get another shot at Minny's Adrian Peterson so it wouldn't be a surprise if they actually had a pretty good game tonight, especially if Vash gets the start. Unless T. Jax has a good game (not by his standards but by NFL standards) I don't see the Vikings putting up more than 20 pts. Although it may be a different story if Harris and Walker (who are questionable at this point) don't get the start.

Kyle Orton finally has the reins to Chicago's anemic offense. Unless The Beard can sprinkle some Christmas magic onto the field tonight, or unless Devin Hester can take the game into his own hands (again), there's no reason to expect anything other than average to below average from this unit. And you'd better believe they're gonna blitz the fuck outta Kyle.

and I think lovie should have called that last time out with about 10 seconds left... they thought we were ready to give up and we did... it would have been a brilliant move to call it and have them have to make a decision.... guess it just wasnt meant to be this year...

Post-game thoughts:

Glad to see Urlacher show up tonight, along with Vash. Tillman was decent too. That new DT looked impressive at times. This at least gives me hope that a healthy Bears D might not be among the worst 5 defenses again next year. But our strong suit has always been speed and tonight we looked a lot slower than the Vikings offense.

The offense was among the worst I've seen in a very, very long time. From the coordinator on down. O-line was horrendous. Orton stared at his receivers all night. Peterson broke maybe one tackle. Both he and Wolfe spent too much time trying to bounce things where they had no business going.

With all of Bear fandom waiting for him to save the day, poor Devin Hester is trying too hard to do too much.

Christmas Wishlist:
I want Orton and Greise on the street by June. In fact, I want Chris Leak starting next week. Or Timmy Chang. Basically anyone not named Orton or Greise. I want Ron Turner looking at classifieds by 9am. Babich can start packing too. I have a soft spot for AP but don't want to see him anymore except on special teams. I want to see at least two new starters on the O-line by next year. I want Archuleta cut, signed to the practice squad, then cut again. I want Rex back, but I want someone to compete with him. I want Benson back with a smaller contract, and as a backup. What else do I want...?

And I'm still holding out hope that we'll at least find a way to sweep the Packers...
