'Twas

Monday, December 24, 2007 | Jeff

Twas a day or so before Christmas
And in our cold, cold house
Not a person could feel an extremity
Not even a mouse

We'd waited and waited all season with care
In hopes a complete football game soon might be there

We gathered at sports bars, with family and friends
With visions of touchdowns to both our tight ends
Pissed Off in his kerchief, Midway in his cap
Had figured the Bears were ready for their long winter's nap

When out on the field, there arose something odd
I pinched myself twice to see if it be fraud...

And we're moving to...

When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a quarterback not ending up on his rear
There was a running game, so lively and quick
I thought for a moment, "This must be a trick!"
The play calls were masterful, a real tour-de-force
And who knew AP could become such a horse?

And what of the defense, oh boy did they play
Brian, Peanut, Jamar, Alex, Adewale
You could write a whole column on each of their days
But Brian deserves it in so many ways

As 54 ran the length of the field
Something inside me was suddenly revealed
This man is a legend, a player for the age
And he shall never again be defamed on this page

But what about the others? How people forget?
Has Green Bay punted successfully yet?
Brad was his finest, Robbie was Gould
Blocking a punt, that shit never gets old

And then seeing Favre, the greatest of all
Most live the rise, I dream of the fall
The weather had beat him, the Bears finished him off
And watching him on the sideline, I thought
"Is Brett Favre that soft?"

This was the game we dreamt of all year
I hope it provided with ample Christmas cheer
There won't be a playoffs or Super Bowl crown
To hold over our shoulders in Chicago town

But maybe we saw just how close we can be
To getting on top of this cheap NFC
Maybe its not so many miles away
Maybe we feel slightly better today

Hey Jeff, you should probably post JBs column, check your email. He wasnt able to login last night since he hadnt got a new password and stuff yet since the site changed. Maybe Noah could set him up or else I can post it for him.

My thoughts on the game:

I dont know whether to be happy for the win yesterday or just more pissed. I am happy they swept the season series from GB and that now despite the playoffs in the shitter and all the other negative stuff, we can shut Pack fans up all offseason.

But seeing how they played yesterday I am just so pissed that we couldnt get into the playoffs this year. What the fuck was the deal? This is just stupid. We can beat the Pack like that twice but cant even split the season series with the shitty Lions or Vikes? WTF? We cant hold a lead against the Giants? Its pathetic. This horrible NFC and we cant get in.

BTW Horton still sucks, he gets a bit of a pass with the weather etc, and didnt make any key mistakes so the caretaker label is still in play for him. Yeah Im scrooge.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

In keeping with the Christmas theme, I am reminded of an event from my childhood. A buddy of mine had his house broken into on Christmas Eve and all the presents were stolen. In their haste, the theives forgot the stockings. So on Christmas that's all they got. A few small gifts and some candy. That's how I felt yesterday. It was great. I loved the game and pretty much everything about it. I truly felt great. But just like losing all those presents, I wonder what we should REALLY be celebrating this year. More than a sweep of the Pack, that's for sure. BUT, I loved watching that game, damn that was fun.

Rnacid: Fact- That was Favre who stole all your gifts. That bastard! But at least we bet him yesterday and sent him on his merry way questioning himself. May he run into a brick wall during the playoffs.

PO: dude- we beat the Pack dude. Dude, Take a moment and celebrate dude.

All: Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays.

Woohoo We swept the pack. We kicked their asses.

Now back to why in hell didnt we make the playoffs? I will pull the Rex card for part of the answer. If he didnt get hurt against the skins we MAY win that one. With Griese we were dead as soon as he took the first snap. Under most of the same circumstances we would have beat Minnesota too last Monday with Rexy and finally Lovie waited too long to go back to Rex.

The defense has disappointed most of the year with the exception of maybe 5 games or so this year. Thats another reason...and injuries.

Great poem Jeff. I had no bittersweet moments during that game - only a huge damn smile on my face. That game fucking kicked ass. And for once it was on at 12, for once I could watch the whole game without having to Tivo it and know what the outcome was before watching it.

Sure it sucks that they picked the 15th game of the season to put together their first 3 phase 4 quarter game. But they did it.

And they did it against the best possible opponent. And we changed the Packers season, probably cost them a shot at the Super Bowl, that was Spoiler Extraordinaire.

The weather was freaking beautiful, and it was TOO COLD FOR THE PACKERS! Turns out Kyle Orton is the football equivalent of a mudder, I'd take him in those limited circumstances every single time.

But the highlight, THE HIGHLIGHT, was old #54's play of genius - can one play make a ruined season okay? If it could, THAT was the play. Can one game make up for a horrible year? If it can, THIS ONE DID.

Way to go Bears. Way to go Lovie. Even RT, you did great.

What a Christmas present. Now back to work so I can get out of here and start my vacation.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah all!

ron turner called the game of his life. the credit for orton's performance has to go to RT, who made pitch perfect calls at the right moments.

PO'd, give the guy a break. Big ups to Neck-Beard for playing a steady game and making plays when he had to. The score should have been 42-7 had Moose used his hands and not his jersey to catch the ball in the end zone.

It's clear from this past year that we have varying levels of mediocrity at QB. Caretaker or not, Neck-Beard did not lose us the game yesterday. Even a HOF QB had trouble doing that yesterday.

Now enjoy the win for what it was and hopefully what it will lead to next week and next year. In the meantime, you know where to find me next Sunday...on the couch in my Bears hoodie, cheering on my team.

35 points- the most in a regular-season game for Chicago since the 42 @ St. Louis (last season). Plus, Brian ran one back with a $hit eating grin on his face that'll make highlights to come. I'll take it.

Next up - The Saints.

Repost:
Great day!!! Absolutely perfect game today by the Bears. It's the first complete game effort since January in playoffs. Just great!!!!
Kudos are needed for a couple of routine punching bags:
Ron Turner: Understood the conditons and picked his spots for pass plays. A really outstanding game calling plays from him. First of the year yes, but the guy did a great job. Especially compared to the Packer play calling.
O-line. They really took apart that front of the Packers all day. Best effort and play even with some false starts. This has been lacking all year, and I think it shows how much better Ron T looks when these guys play like this. Olin made it look like a rivalry out there.
Orton: Look I'm not going to support any getting carried away with this, but he handled the conditions better then Favre. He is a game manager, and did a good job of that today.
I'm not sure what has happened to the defense the last two weeks that they have played so much better but it's great to see and offers some hope for next year.

in regards to the defense, i'm not sure if its not health. urlacher and harris just look at full strength and they've been dominant. the move of alex brown back to the starting lineup has been amazing...brown's a really good player. this defense is a safety away from being back at the top of the league. they need to tackle better at the third level.

Dear Chicago Bears,

Thanks for the early Christmas present. I think only the 40-year-old bottle of whisky my girlfriend got me could possibly be better. Bear down! Let's see more of this shit in 2008!!!!

One other thing needs to be noted from our total team victory yesterday: Lance Briggs' noticeable absence due to "injury" now that he's met his 75% quota of snaps for the year. Only more fitting that 54 was the face of the win yesterday.

I've been to some excellent Bears games the last couple of years...saw them beat the Panthers at home in 2005 (obviously not the playoff game) and last year, I got to see them beat the Rams in STL and the Seahawks in the Playoffs as Robbie kicked the field goal right at me.

I must say though, yesterday was an absolute treat. The conditions were terrible...after we scored our first touchdown, I threw my hot dog wrapper in the air in celebration and the wind carried it right out of the stadium. The Packers were not very smart trying to pass the ball as much as they did (especially before the Bears lead started to grow).

Kudos to the Bears players for not packing this game in on a dreadful day with some starters sitting. (ahem, Lance Briggs) I'll forever remember Peanut blocking the punt and Urlacher returning the INT. It was certainly an early Christmas present for all Bear fans.

I really loved watching the game.

I think one of the reasons the weathr helped so much was it simlified what could be done.

Ron Turner did call an excellent game, but the players executed and I think that was partly them being up for the game and partly the simplification of things like blocking assignments because of the weather.

How many times did you see them attempt to pull a guard to run on Sunday, because I didn't see it once, it was all downhill blocking.

The fact that a pass was a surprise play meant there wasn't much in the way of blitzing to pick up.

I think those two things mean our line had a pretty good game, and as a result the rest of the offense could do well.

Alex Brown returning as the starter made a big difference. This has been fairly obvious all year long, but why Lovie and Bob refused to admit the mistake is beyond me. They've created a headache this offseason now, and got Anderson worn down.
I also think the new guys at D-tackle have made a difference. Both Kennedy and the Toe have been impressive. Based on his roster bonus I think Walker is a gonner in a month or so.
