Pack In the Saddle

Monday, January 14, 2008 | Jeff

On Sunday the New York Giants will travel to Lambeau Field and lose a heartbreaker to the Green Bay Packers, sending the cheese to the Super Bowl. It is another one of the 2007 season's disturbing sucker punches to the Bears faithful who actually believed the last two years happened. Who were we kidding? The Chicago Bears will officially vacate the position of NFC Champions Sunday and they'll be putting this year's green jacket on Green Bay.

The two weeks that follow will be some of the most unbearable in the history of humans. Brett Favre top tens on Sportscenter, Brett Favre covers of Sports Illustrated, Brett Favre Inside the Actor's Studio, Brett Favre wins the Republican primary in South Carolina...etc. Pay attention. Watch every second. TIVO or DVR or pop in a cassette tape and record every moment. Just hope Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith are doing the same thing. Let it be a reminder that where there's a quarterback, there's a way. And even though I've got a lot of problems with the media coverage of Brett Favre, there's no doubting he's one hell of a quarterback.

Oh yes, folks, Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers are going to the Super Bowl. God help us all. As for the Bears, we'll start a position-by-position breakdown this week.

Shady - The link at the bottom constantly changes. Right now it's a link for "Green Bay Packers Apparel". If forced to click on one of those I'm leaning toward the "Meet Gay Hairy Bears" one. Pretty sure I'd rather be ass raped by a hairy grizzly bear than put one of those damn cheese things on my head.

I can tell that the relative moods around here may be based on perspective and where you live. I'm actually having a very jolly morning because The Rich and The Haughty "America's Team" lost, and the Hollywood Playa and Rib Restaurant Namesake is now 0-2 in playoff games. I've got nothing against the Giants, and now will be rooting for them to knock off the Pack.

The Colts loss made me realize that the Bears weren't as far away as I thought by the close of last year's big game. Convinced more than ever that with defensive adjustments in that game, we'd be sitting in a very different position right now. The Patriots may still be the world beaters that they appear to be, but maybe it's only them on that pedestal and not the Colts, like I thought.

Who here doesn't believe that the "real" Bears (healthy and well-coached) couldn't handle any of these NFC teams? And how does Grossman's performance in the post-season last year now compare with the greatly-heralded (and greatly paid) Tony Romo?

Philip Rivers, on the other hand, is better than I thought he was. I still haven't turned the corner on my opinion of Eli, but I'm sure glad he brought it in yesterday's game.

Now my sole motivation for the remainder of the playoffs is to see the Patriots lose, so I can regain even more hope for next year.

For what it's worth, I think the two championship games will be very interesting. Remember, the Chargers exited last year as the #1 seed in a loss to the then underdog Pats. Extra motivation for them for sure. I think that chargers team is just dynamic enough to make a run at the pats. As far as the NFC, the Giants can't play at home but play well on the road. Works out well here as they travel to GB. As a pure football fan, I think these games will be entertaining. As a Bears fan i've been reduced to cheering for teams I hate less to beat teams I hate more. I'll take the G-men in the NFC. Haven't decided about the AFC yet. Jeff, good idea re: position break downs. I was going to suggest that. Can we start with long snapper?

And again, Midway (and probably Jeff), it's sacrilege to wish for anything but the most heinous and bloody misfortunes to befall Brett Farve and and Packers, but a couple of points here...

1) Packers are, like the Bears, NFL royalty and one of the original teams, unlike the upstart Vikings, Lions, or Patriots.

2) Packers still, like the Bears, have the balls to play northern latitude football in open stadiums, where you can see outrageous snow games like the one on Saturday (unlike the Vikings or Lions).

3) If the Pack wins a SB this year, Brett Favre will retire.

4) If the Pack wins a SB this year, WE'LL KNOW DEFINITIVELY THAT WE BEAT THE SUPER BOWL WINNER TWICE IN ONE SEASON!

Wow....i went from 4-4 last week, to 0-4 this week....

.......hey, I have a novel one.... Can we please stop hearing about how the NFC north is weak?

Listen...I hate the Packers. My Roger's Park, Irish, Catholic family raised me that way. However, I would be lying if I wasn't a little proud of the packers for representing our division with class. How many years have our ears been violated by the media telling us our division was crap? Not this year, bitches! As a matter of fact, we have the third most combined wins (35) of any division in the nfl, behind the AFC south (3 playoff teams) and the NFC east (3 playoff teams)....

.....it also seems a similar fate to the big ten.... how is it that a power-house conference like that gets shat on year in and year out? How many times has the big ten provided a team or two in the national championship, or the final four? Almost every year! They always have a horse in the race....leave those kids alone!

...anyway.........

....So it seems as though it'll be the Pats and the Pack in Glendale on february 4th.... It will be a challenge for me to stifle my vomit long enough to enjoy a superbowl commercial (which have been disapointing as of late) or two..... doesn't this remind you of the 2004 presidential election? Who do you want to win? Lose, lose if you ask me..... what a cruel, depressing joke....

....and speaking of politics, isn't the lovie smith era eerily starting to look like the Bush administration debockle? What a couple of stubborn fools.... How many bears losses until someone is accountable? Whether you're a Rex supporter or not, we are all missing the point.....

WE SHOULD NOT HAVE THESE ISSUES!

Wether or not the sex cannon is or isn't the answer shouldn't even be an issue! We should have a QB! Do you think Colts fans are questioning their QB position after that loss yesterday? I don't think so.....

Jesus Christ you guys! I was there! There are no weapons of mass destruction!

Right the ship, damn it!

....Oh well....

....i'm off to go find my Soriano jersey......

Wouldnt it be better though to have the pack win and then get destroyed by the Patriots in the Super Bowl. More humiliating for them I think.

It truly was upset Sunday. Funny though also how the NFC North is pegged as such a shitty division all the time when the last two years (including this year when the Pack beats the Giants to get in) the NFC north has had the NFC super bowl representative. Plus when the Bucs won it a few years back when they were still in the north.

I'll be pulling for the Giants. As a kid I had a shirt that said "My two favorite teams are the Chicago Bears and Anyone who beats the Packers." I wish I could still fit into it, I'd be wearing it this weekend.

You have to hand it to the Pack...they beat the Seahawks very soundly after trailing 14 zip about five minutes into the game. That slow track certainly slowed down the front four of the Seahawks...and what else can you say about Ryan Grant? He is a good runner and the Pack are certainly a team who can beat you with the pass and the run, unlike the first half of the season. I thought their defense really set the tone after going down 14-0...especially Atari Bigby. He was all over the field, always in the right spots, making Seattle receivers think twice about going up for any balls. Made me think of Mike Brown and how much better we are with him on the field...but I won't beat a dead horse with that one.

Should be an interesting game next weekend in Green Bay. Early weather reports suggest it may only be in the single digits...not to mention, it is a nice game, so there will be no sun out there either. Giants haven't lost a road game since the first game of the year. Look very poised on offense right now and are playing with a whole lot of confidence on both sides of the ball. However, the Cowboys really blew that game yesterday...a lot of mental mistakes...they could have won that game rather handidly I thought. I think the Pack will prevail, but it might end up being a closer game than imagined. Will be interesting to see how the Giants secondary plays, considering how banged up they are.

Too bad...I was looking forward to Pack-Cowboys and Pats-Colts...but the dream matchups never seem to happen, you have to earn it in the playoffs. Last year seems like a long time ago at this point...

Anyone watch Michael Turner during the Chargers game? I didn't get to watch much of it, wondering how he looked against a fast and physical defense like the Colts.

Yeah that Ryan Grant guy is really good. I'm gonna put him in a top tier spot for running backs including the sensation Adrian Peterson until proven otherwise.

I'm gonna go as so far to say he's so good he had to give the other team two scores to feel it was a fair challenge =).

well I'm no Packer Hater *ahem jeff cough* so may the best team win.

Jeff, I read your post and weep. The notorious 'Bastard Favre' dog is having his day. He has kicked over our cool aid stand, and now stands and taunts.

Someday the sun will shine again... Someday...and when it does, promise me you'll all celebrate with me. There will be a day when #4 retires. Maybe if the Pack wins it all he will decided to depart on a high note...Oh what a day that will be. We'll have a damn parade where we'll dance, sing, and leap for joy.

Until then, let us remember this sour taste in our mouths and look to beat em in '08.

The four remaining teams in the playoffs are proof of the importance of a competent and effective running game - to complement good to great passing games. This is particularly true of the Giants and Pack.

Grant turned the Pack from a one-dimensional, sure to lose playoff team into a dangerous contender. The same is true for the tandem of Jacobs/Bradshaw, who are critically important because the Giants passing attack is not necessarily the greatest (although Eli is playing well right now). And the O Lines of these teams cannot be discounted, as well.

If the Bears want to return to prominence and continue to promulgate the mantra of, "We are a running team off the bus," the O Line has got to be fixed and they need to obtain a competent running back. The Bears have only spent 4 draft picks over the last five years on O Linemen out of 42 total picks. That is inexcusable. Period

The funniest thing about Ryan Grant is that he was going to be cut from the Giants squad in training camp, but the Packers gave up a 6th round pick to get him before he got on the open market. That's right boys and girls - a 6th round pick. What round did the Bears pick up Cedric Benson in again? I forgot.

January 14, 2008

#21 Phil from SATX said . . .

Ryan Grant was undrafted. Marion Barber was a 4th rounder. Brandon Jacobs was a 4th rounder. Michael Turner was a 5th rounder.

This postseason is providing many great examples of why you don't have to pick high/spend a lot to get a quality RB. You just need to provide him with a quality offensive line.

I hope the Bears brass are watching, learning. I hope Cedric Benson is watching and getting embarrassed. Since he'll undoubtedly be back next year, I hope he's taking notes on how to turn back into an angry runner, like these guys. He seemed to have it once - I hope he can get it back again. Mostly I hope that the next guy the Bears sign will be the anti-Benson, and that much of the effort of the offseason will be on the line.

I am in complete agreement with Phil regarding the perception that the Bears have gone completely into the shitter. Reality is that we are not that far away from contention again. As far as the Colts loss giving that statement validity, I completely agree. In all actuality our loss in the SB last year was in no way an indictment as to how far away the Bears were. It had everything to do with Dungy and Co. simply playing a better game than us. If TJ touched the ball 35 times in the SB I am convinced that an already close game would have ended in our favor. And as far as Rex is concerned, he is our quarterback, F everyone else. Re-sign him and just let him play ball, period. Screw every other QB we could possibly bring in. Our '08 season will be the vindication of the Rex and the Bears.

I also have to admit I was pretty impressed with Pack on Saturday. The actually beat a good team in a game where the breaks went against them. They hadn't beaten a good team in a long time and when they did, a lot of the difference came down to bounces, breaks, and questionable calls.
Saturday they got kicked in the teeth with a 14-0 hole and came back and crushed a solid Seattle team. They deserve props for that.
I think they are going to beat the G-men. I hope I'm wrong but I've never been a believer in Eli and I feel Dallas lost that game yesterday a lot more then the Giants won it.
As for what would be worse, I don't know about that one. On the one hand losing to the Giants would be a lot more embarassing then losing to the Patriots. Especially at home. However in the SB they likely would get destroyed by the NE offense and Favre would likely melt down and have 5 pick game. But if they made it there we'd have to hear two weeks of bs about the great Brett Favre.

January 14, 2008

#25 Pissed Off said . . .

Almost forgot that we'd have to listen to 2 weeks of Favre shit if they won. That almost negates the elated feeling I would have if they got destroyed in the Super Bowl. Kind of a lesser of two evils thing.

I mean theres no question that Brett Favre is one hell of a QB but do we really need to see him 24/7 on ESPN? If the packers make the Super Bowl then there going to talk about Brett more than the game itself, thats what pisses me off. I dont want New England to make it either because there just going to talk about there perfect season and how they overcame so called "adversity" it makes me sick. Thats why im picking these teams to make the superbowl:

San Diego over New England (I must be high lol)

New York over Green Bay (Cant stand Green Bay)

Now, I know that this will not happen but I dont want my nightmare of New England and Green Bay in the Super Bowl, I wont even bother watching.

However since the superbowl looser has not been good the next year, I would bare the torture of watching endless highlights of Brett Favre to see the cheese loose to whoever the AFC champ is. I just hope its San Diego. Rancid, I hate these 4 teams as well, I hope this is one big nightmare lol.

But these 4 teams remind us that to be succesful you have to have a good QB and a good running back to be succesful. Last year we had a running game and a at times a good QB in Rex. Now we still have a solid starter that can be a pro bowler when he is protected and BIG weapon in Hester, Olsen, and possibly Berrian, with Moose and Bradley when needed. All we need is a solid running back. To do that we have to get rid of CB, sign a good HB in free agency and keep AP as a backup to clean up.

If the Bears were a little healthy this year and made the playoffs then I think we could have gone deep, there isnt a team we can match up with if healthy. We sweeped the cheese, should have beat NY, were neck and neck with Dallas till the 4th quarter and should have beat the seahawks. WE ARE NOT THAT FAR AWAY! All we need is a O-Line, a healthy Mike Brown and a good running back, if we get that then well be back next year.
