Combine Begins Today And...

Saturday, February 23, 2008 | Jeff

Here's five things to look for this weekend.

1. Apparently the Chicago Tribune website is on vacation so turn to the Sun-Times who are actually covering the Bears this offseason. The Trib is at its best when David Haugh is writing beat coverage and news and the roster of columnists are providing opinions.

2. According to the Sun-Times and several other news sites, the Bears will sign Rex to a two-year deal sometime in the next two days.

3. Good article from Brad Biggs making it pretty clear that the Bears are not ready to lose Briggs, Berrian or Dejo to free agency just yet and will continue negotiating over the course of the week. They are also actively looking to wrap-up Tommie Harris long-term.

4. Pay attention to two positions if you are following the combine this weekend: offensive line and running back. (The word on the street is those might be the two deepest positions coming out.) The Bears could be looking there with their first two picks.

5. If you're a betting man, play Jimmie Johnson's 48 car to rebound tomorrow after a disappointing Daytona. He's on the pole and he's traditionally strong at California.

Does Adam Archuleta have photos of JA and Lovie in drag? How is this guy still on the roster?

Anyway... I think Rosenhaus really does enjoy working with Cliff Stein and the rest of the Bears front office. I think something will get done with Berrian and Harris - but Brendan and Lance are gonners.

The Bears needs in the draft will clearly be defined by their success in free agency. I believe the Bears think Beekman is ready to compete at Guard, and will set their sights on Jordan Gross in free agency. This will give them more flexibility on the first day of the draft...which will mean a trade down for more picks.

Or a trade to the Cleveland Browns for Brady Quinn:

Bye the way....Daunte Culpepper could run this offense really well, and he is over the injury. I would sign the day after Griese was let go.

Viva,
I cannot say "No!" enough to the suggestion of Daunte Culpepper.
Jeff,
Keep Nascar off this site. I hate it with a passion.

Viva, Jordan Gross off the table - been franchised by Carolina. Maybe the signing of Rex, should it occur (maybe today), will push forward a signing of Berrian. Maybe in the minority in still thinking that is far from a must-sign, but also have to think that maybe Berrian will be a little surprised at the offers in free agency - that's when a bunch of teams will have to knock heads with Rosenhaus in explaining all the reasons why Berrian may be one of the top names out there, but he has not shown he deserves top 10 money. And maybe Berrian will decide he wants a shorter, bridge-type deal - with Grossman throwing him the ball, he's thinking he'll take the next two years to solidify himself as a top receiver, THEN get the big KACHE. Because he'll get enough to get small rich this time, but the really big dollars are going to elude him, this go-round at least - I think.

i think berrian will see the signing of rex as a good thing, i agree. and i think bringing rex back means he'll be the starting quarterback week one and i'm looking for KO to be the 2 and a rookie to come in and watch. berrian was vocal about wanting the qb position stabilized.

I am praying the bears will draft a rb in the 1st or 2nd round this year. There are about 5 or 6 backs that could help us immensely. Would love to see the bears draft Stewart from Oregon or Mendenhall in the first round and then get the best remaining tackle in the 2nd. Or go with Clady or Williams in the 1st and maybe look at Felix Jones or Chris Johnson in the 2nd. That Johnson kid is so fast. 4.27 in the 40. wow. I watched his highlight tape on youtube and he doesn't even weigh 200 lbs. yet he is scrappy and can break tackles. But man is he fast and has great cutback ability. All I know is it would be nice for once if I knew who any of our picks were past the first round. ala mark bradley, dan bazuin, daniel manning, etc. Let's get some proven players instead of being cute and drafting a bunch of projects our coaches couldn't coach up anyway. One more thing, no qb on the first day. All i have heard is bad things about this class.

Forget Berrian. He's going to sign a huge contract somewhere else and be a bust. Sign a Hackett or Bryant type and save some money to spend on RB,O-line and safety. I like Mike Brown but stay healthy for a season for god sake. I think the bears will draft O-line and RB in the first two rounds and maybe go for QB in the third.
