Brett Favre is done and the Chicago Bears have just seen their Vegas odds skyrocket within the division. Look at the starting quarterbacks now in the NFC North:
Chicago: Rex Grossman/Kyle Orton
Minnesota: Tarvaris Jackson
Green Bay: Aaron Rodgers
Detroit: Jon Kitna
10:20 AM UPDATE
Check out the front page of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Did Favre retire...or die? Also, the JS employs a sports columnist named Michael Hunt. Can't make that shit up.
Favre just called Chris Mortensen to deny the rumors that he's retiring because the Packers failed to sign Randy Moss.
10:58 AM UPDATE
Mike Downey has begun the Chicago paper fellacio fest. Do you get the sense from this column that Downey is a Packers fan or is just pretending to be a Packers fan? Either way, it's official. Mike Downy...I'm watching you.
11:07 AM UPDATE
Rosenbloom saves the day! He says the Favre retirement is a bad thing because he's the only quarterback Lovie can beat. I don't agree with him but it sure is funny.
12:53 PM UPDATE
Apologies for the server problems. We remain your one-stop shopping for Brett Favre goodbyes. John Clayton has already brought the Packers back to earth. The real question? Has there ever been a football division with this amount of insecurity as the quarterback position?
1:00 PM UPDATE
The Journal Sentinel is updating quite often and this Favre retirement is starting to sound almost like it was forced by the Packers. Here's a comment from his agent:
"I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it."
1:24 PM UPDATE
Rick Morrissey of the Trib thinks Favre's retirement is everybody's loss. He's wrong. Dead wrong. I cherish the Green Bay Packers ballgame where I don't have to listen to announcers wax poetic about how much fun Favre is having throwing the ball to the other team.
1:28 PM UPDATE
Gallo bringing the funny over at ESPN.
1:37 PM UPDATE
Three of the worst playoff games ever played by a quarterback in this league.
1:47 PM UPDATE
Attention all Bears fans! Meggles is right. We need some videos of Favre's blunders, especially against Chicago and involving these playoff games above. I'd like all six from the Rams game and 'the heave" on repeat.
2:07 PM UPDATE
Fake headline from ESPN.COM in June:
PACKERS ENTER TRAINING CAMP WITHOUT PROVEN QUARTERBACK
by John Clayton
(I'm having fun today)
3:32 PM UPDATE
Brad Biggs has some Bears reactions to the Favre retirement. This column includes the inadvertently funniest phrase of the day from Nathan Vasher: "He would put balls in places where they were just out of reach." I bet he did, Nate.
5:25 PM UPDATE
The Real Mariotti has finally gotten on-board the "Brett Favre is God" bandwagon and describes himself as "bummed" not to have Favre going for another title. Two tidbits...
Mariotti writes in regards to Favre's poor play in the NFC Championship Game, "Didn't the Packers suffer no harsher sin than an overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions?" Woah. Is this the same Jay Mariotti that has crucified Rex Grossman's performance in a loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions? The same Jay Mariotti that was unforgiving in his indictment of the Bears organization in the aftermath of Super bowl XLI?
How about this comment? "Bears fans think they have a chance to control the rivalry again. I will bring them back to earth with this: I'd rather have Aaron Rodgers, Favre's heir apparent, than Turnoversaurus Rex." (1)The Bears are 6-2 in the last four years of the rivalry and our makeshift quarterbacks have been to more Super Bowls since the Y2K phenomenon that Brett has. (2) How many games has Aaron Rodgers won in pro football? (3) I'm happy that Jay Mariotti wrote a predictably ignorant and sycophantic column about Favre. If he'd written something honest and truthful, it would have destroyed my feelings about him.
9:53 PM UPDATE
I know it deserves its own post but I figured why not use the space of this glorious day to talk about Marty Booker returning to the Chicago Bears. The Bears have now added a steady, reliable presence to the receiving corps and hopefully aren't done yet.
Oh glorious day! I wish thee never to end!

#16 jdawg said . . .OK - so they (Packers) had a crap season in 2006 and Favre thought of retiring but came back. Then they have a very successful season, seem to be getting better, and he retires. Why? My take - he wanted the TD record. Plain and simple. Not a negative - he deserved it. But why quit now? Because he wanted to quit the year before.
Have you seen the picture of his last pass - where there were three receivers relatively open but he threw to the most covered guy for an INT?
I'm glad that he had a good year last year - makes beating them twice mean something. It won't be the same without him. And I don't think that puts the Bears in the playoffs by any stretch.

Meanwhile we are saddled with infuriating garbage at QB. It never changes. For this Bear fan of 44 years of age it is depressing. We haven't had a real QB in this town since the temporary heyday of Jim McMahon and before that the run of Sid Luckman.
And yet Jerry Angelo lives with his head up his ass STILL trying to justify the selection of Rex Grossman 6 bloody seasons ago. Greek tragedies are happier stories than this.

I just hope there isn't a Bears letdown next year because they don't see #4 out there to fire them up.
Listen to Mike's silly shit though - it's really a shtick for him. He's like our Mariotti. In fact, that's what I'm going to start calling him - Mariotti.

Farve might have had the Bears' number in the past, but Chicago was able to grab the last laugh. It's nice to know the Bears were 2 of the 3 losses GB had last year.
For shits and giggles this morning, I watched the week 16 game vs. GB in the cold and wind. Watching Farve fumble shotgun snaps, throw INTs and freeze his little balls off on he sideline as he watched KO move the Bears offense down the field made for a fitting ending and I couldn't have asked for a better burial.
It would just be mean to mention the choke job Farve pulled in the playoffs. Way to go with a bang! While Chicago's superstar (MJ) will be remembered for go out on top winning a championship (cross-over jump shot over Byron Russell), Green Bay can relish the memory of a final season coming up short all because their hero threw the game away....

It's always tough for a great player to call it quits because you can't go back even if you want to once you give it up (see Jordan, Michael). Had the Packers signed Moss MAYBE he would have come back. (And MAYBE that's exactly why the Packers didn't.)
We beat him 5 out of the last 6, with the one happening after we clinched everything in 2006. He looked to me and many others like he simply didn't want to be there at the Giants game (my brother in law - a devout Packer fan, agreed with me on that.) It had to end sometime.
Brian in WI - when you get to the point when Rex and Kyle know how to win a game better than Favre did, it was time.
And I'd love to hear your prediction on the season with Mr. Rogers as QB.

No Megan I didnt go quite that far. I hate to even say it but we went down there for the NASCAR package. We didnt go saturday but we went to the race on Sunday. It was my first time to a live event and it was pretty sweet. I will admit I have never watched more than a few minutes of it on TV before and still probably wont but being there live, smelling the fuel and feeling the thunder so to speak was pretty awesome. I would love to make it an annual event but damn....the package is pricey. I did bet on the race, 4 drivers, so I had a rooting interest while I was there to keep me interested and make it fun. I missed my little guy though so it was good to get home last night.

Hey Mike - you can't figure out how to post after lo these many months and WE'RE the drool monkeys?
PO'd, you never have to worry, or even comment about impersonations - although some of them are so pointless that they would almost be indiscernable to all but the most frequent visitors - but point is, we know it's not you.
And Jeff, speaking of impersonators, I understand your "open to all" policy - it's pretty important in a forum like this - but I can't see any arguable benefit in making it so easy to post under another's moniker. Possibly technical issues associated with it? Or changes would just make the site more cumbersome and less fluid? It's not like a world shaking problem, it's just a little ugly and results in people having to post to say "not me."
Just wondering. And great point about the state of quarterbacks in the NFC North - when Jon Kitna is the most celebrated of the 4 QBs, that ain't saying much - I like Rex's chances against all of our divisional opponents next year.

We all would like for you to fall off the face of the earth but you insist on thinking we like reading your trash and calling yourself superior. SKEPTICISM SWIRLS ABOUT FAVRE RETIREMENT
Several league insiders with whom we've communicated regarding the stunning decision of quarterback Brett Favre to retire from the Packers aren't convinced that Brett's days in green and gold are over.
"I believe you should be skeptical about this," one league source expressed to us a little while ago.
We're not officially skeptical yet, but the comments of agent Bus Cook make us think that, once Favre appreciates the outpouring of affection and support from Cheeseheads everywhere, he could change his mind.
And to the extent that there's an impression on Brett's part that the organization didn't want him, we suspect that a behind-the-scenes butt-smooching session of epic proportions already is unfolding.

As for Mike; it's bad enough that he is wrong about most things, but the arrogance and patheticness are what get me. Impersonating other people to attempt to slam them, or creating fake names to make it look like more people agree with you is truely pathetic.
And oh yeah, who could forget the many "book it," claims he's made. My favorites are:
3. Declaring after week 3 that Grossman would never take another snap as a Bear. Any true fan, even one who didn't like Rex would've never made a claim like that.
2. Declaring that Grossman was a gonner in the offseason.
1. Declaring that Briggs was a gonner in the offseason.

He wont get down on Rex or others, he'll just help him out. I can see Booker being Rex's safety blanket this year. So as of now we have Book, Bradley, Hester, Davis as WRs? Anyways, I find it curious that a packer fan would run onto a bears blog on the day of mourning to try to make himself feel better. The bears have had plenty of celebrated players, so I'm not quite sure what your point was there.
I'm only happy about Favre retiring because we'll hear less of him now. Oy! I can't believe how much of that lovefest I've sat through over the years. Otherwise, we've owned him as of late, and it's nice to see the comical throws he makes.
Booker on board is good. It's a solid, important pick up for us. I'm still holding out hope for Bryant Johnson and an offensive lineman before we wrap FA up.
March 5, 2008
#114 JAB said . . .Brandon Rideau has great size, at 6'3". I wonder if he gets worked in at all. Also, any word on Bryant Johnson as a potential since he's moving on (maybe) from Buffalo? We're also hearing nothing about Hackett.
How about a trade for Roy Williams? Don't we have some bait we could offer for that, or would Lions not consider it being divisional rivals?
I'll echo Rancid - the deal with Javon was beyond insane. The guy was injured in 2005 and again in 2007. He had major mental issues to deal with from his teammate dying in his arms. He doesn't sound like much of a team guy. And he gets potentially more than Randy Moss? Jerry, from one fan at least, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SOBRIETY. #116 Pissed Off said . . .I already know what the Packer fans on this site will say to this, but in reference to the media hype that Favre enjoyed / enjoys: look at the explosion of media outlets today. Go back to 1985 and the phenomenon that was the Bears - arguably the first "rock star" sports team in American history (the Bulls offically given that title 10 years later). No wide proliferation of cable TV; no internet, no blogs, fan sites, etc like there is now. And yet they were clearly America's team - still ranked in many polls as the single best team ever. My point is - the coverage of the Bears would have blown away what happens with Favre.
But of course it was a one hit wonder vs a long and remarkable career. No comparison - Favre has us "beat" in that area as well. And if I was a Packer fan - I'd ask my kids to put me away. No - if I was a Packer fan, I'd probably want to hear respect from other teams' fans too - it's going to be a tough ride being just another team with a no-name QB. Let's see Madden and company fawn over a Rodgers INT as "just Aaron trying to make a play."
March 5, 2008
#117 Max said . . .I havent said much about the Favre retireing but make no mistake I'm loving it. Favre doesnt even belong in the top 5 or probably even 10 top QBs of all time. He kept playing and playing and didnt know when to hang it up thats why he has all the records. He's just a reckless guy who's certainly not even in conversation with someone who was as fluid and mechanical as Montana. Better QBs - Marino, Manning, Brady, Unitas, Bradshaw, Montana, Elway for sure maybe Baugh, Luckman. I dont know but I've never had any sympathy for Favre or his "will I or wont I retire" bits every year. Its getting old. Would any of us be shocked if he came back and started week one in 2008...No.
Well that means we have 6 WRs currently? That cant hold up can it? A couple of these guys wont be on the opening roster if we sign another WR in FA or thru the draft. It will be exciting to see who stays and who goes.
March 5, 2008
#118 Phil from SATX said . . .Phil, as dumb as the Lions have been in terms of roster moves. . . I dont think they would trade their number 1 receiver in conference, much less to a division rival like us. But I mean, Favre retired so anything is possible

#119 mikebdot said . . .Hass has okay size, listed at 6'1", but at a 4.6 40 that's deemed pretty slow for a receiver. But for the slot I think it's more about quickness and a precise route, and then of course, hands. And the word is that that dude has hands extraordinaire. He got in 1 game last year, and balls thrown his way in the regular season.
I still think the Bears are going to sign one more WR and draft another as well - that will leave 5 guys that all come before a Rideau or a Hass. Bottom line - I don't think we'll ever know whether Hass could be good, unless we see him on another team. Love that recent link to the two great preseason catches by Ball and Hass. The Bears faithful would really embrace another "the next Tom Waddle" - but I don't think we'll see it.
Let's face it - if the Bears snag one more FA WR like Johnson or Hackett, plus a 3rd rounder - we get pretty dang excited about the new status of WR core, and particularly the potential upside, going into next year.
Next stop, offensive line.

March 5, 2008
#124 JB said . . .JB,
Well, he's dropped a lot more recently. In '06 there was maybe one single game where he missed a few but the rest of the year he was damn solid. This season there were a few games where he wasn't as awesome, but Manning hangs him out to dry on occasion and he comes up with quite a few passes he has no business catching. He doesn't usually drop passes that hit him in the chest, like, say, Moose. Yes, technically, Clark is a TE, but he's really nothing of the sort. He's basically a slot reciever.
In any event, I'm sure there were a few games where you might not get the same impression, but I've watched nearly all of them the past two years and he's a fucking stud (usually).
Bob Sanders is kind of a dick and thus why I don't like him. He's an awesome player though. I think he'll suffer a similar fate to Mike Brown though, being injured every year, except at a younger age since he's kind of already had that problem.

#130 minnie Mad Dog said . . .Guys, let's not forget that Marty is only 31. Far from being washed up. I think he's really going to help us. Good point about too many bodies around, especially as we all feel a WR will be drafted.
What ABOUT the idea of grabbing a Warrick Dunn? Is he too much of Garrett Wolfe? He's a solid veteran with lots of smarts - and aside from the size similarity between the two, he's fully capable of running it effectively in straight RB sets, both between the tackles and otherwise, whereas I haven't seen Wolfe be the slightest bit effective in straightforward handoff situations - at least based on last year.
I think a lot of our offensive problems last year related to lack of experience, in the RB position and WR position (with the experienced WR not performing). Adding seasoned veterans like Booker, and potentially a Warrick Dunn, would really balance our youth and inexperience, while also providing important mentorship.
What thinks ye?

#134 big rob said . . .JB, you're probably right, I'm just intrigued with the veteran angle. I'm dead certain we're drafting a RB who will be intended to be the full time replacement for Ced next year, when Ced's allowed to become of free agent and we say sayonara to yet another 1st round RB bust. But coupling a Warrick Dunn, who probably would be pretty cheap at this stage in his career, with the new guy could be a good combo - we know damn sure Ced's never going to mentor anyone and as sad as it makes me, I'm not sure if AP's going to be able to keep a spot on this roster, nor is he really experienced enough for mentoring.
I know, it's probably stupid and the Bears aren't even considering it. I may be overthinking this mentoring/experience angle, but it IS what we lost when we lost TJ. A damn smart professional who made everyone around him better.

#142 Rancid said . . .So whats left on the shopping list?? That is to say, what other FA signings are necessary?? I'd venture to say at minimum: OG/LT and S. I think a DT would be nice too... but there might not be many upgrades left on the FA market.

#143 Mike (for subscribers only) said . . .Mike - I have an idea. Since your wisdom is worth 1.99, it is unwise to give it away here for free. I think you should start your own "subscribers only" blog and charge a membership fee. Of course it would never work if people could just come to this one and read your ever-wise fearless opinions for free, so once you got yours up and running you'd have to stop posting here. I like the idea already

#144 Pissed Off said . . .Angelo is not going to find an Offensive Tackle in free agency. He maybe finds a serviceable Offensive Guard. What does it all mean? You can bet the ranch the Bears take the best available OT in the 1st rouund of the April draft. And an OG as well no later than the 3rd round.

#145 Shady said . . .Good thing I'm not subscriber. He'd have to pay me to read his garbage. This guy is so full of shit its unreal. And now he's trying to tell us he writes under one name.....your a fucking liar Mike. We know damn well you are Maddux Boy and all the other imposters on here. Denial is your word of the day. Throw Loser in there too. Maybe Pathetic can be tomorrows word.

#147 jdawg said . . .Tsk, tsk Pissed Off. I hereby revoke your subscriber membership. I won't tolerate attempts to soil my good reputation. You're just pissed off because you live in purgatory, better known as North Dakota. By the way, how does a dazzling young urbanite like yourself wind up a member of the Bears? I would think a goofy bastard like you would be a Minnesota Viking fan. Anyway, I digress. Next season I promise to flash a poster at Soldier Field that says North Dakota Bear Fans Suck for the benefit of the TV cameras. Hope you have a satellite dish somewhere in that God-forsaken hell hole of a state so you might be able to catch the game on TV.

#149 jeff said . . .It's been more than three years since Hewitt reached a Grand Slam final. He's now 27 years old and ranked No. 24 coming into Las Vegas. In the spirit of such battlers as Jimmy Connors and Michael Chang, Hewitt is a warrior to the end. Predictions are far less important to him than the mere act of day-in, day-out competition.
When his career is over, Hewitt will bring his car in on empty. He will have explored every possible avenue, squeezed every drop out of his tennis experience. Supreme devotion might not always make the highlight reel, but surely it's yet another of Hewitt's many underrated talents.

P.S maybe we should get Shanahan to help with the draft. Cutler, Marshall and Royal are dream names on the back of a Bear's jersey. What do you think of Rice comeback? Another retread or a good 2 to 3yrs!

Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish. You are not free, however, to be an asshole. So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
