Breaking Down the Schedule

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 | Jeff

I'll do as Lovie asks and break down the 2008 Chicago Bears schedule in four quarters.

QUARTER ONE
@ Indianapolis, @ Carolina, TAMPA BAY, PHILADELPHIA
For the second consecutive season, the Bears play their most difficult game on opening day. If they win it, they'll most likely ride that momentum to a great early start. If they don't, they can't afford to lose at Carolina the following week - making it arguably the most important game on the schedule. But can the Bears offense be expected to miraculously develop a rhythm early in the year? I don't think so. 2-2
QUARTER TWO
@ Detroit, @ Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit
This is season-defining stuff. Three division games and the most winnable game on the schedule. The Bears' two losses to Detroit were heartbreakers last season and I don't expect that to happen again. Split the Detroit series, give us the Minny home game and road win against the hapless Falcons. 3-1
QUARTER THREE
Tennessee, @ Green Bay, @ St. Louis, @ Minnesota
Tennessee is one of the good ballclubs that couldn't scare me less. The Packers and Rams suck. The question is will the rigor of three consecutive road games beat the boys up heading into the homestretch? Can't expect them to do better than 1-2 here. 2-2
QUARTER FOUR
Jacksonville, New Orleans, Green Bay, @ Houston
What a way to end the season. Jacksonville's run game won't suffer in Chicago. Bears win out from there. 3-1

Season prediction: 10-6

I say we beat either carolina or tennesse and finish 11-5 also I think the jags will be tougher than indy because a healthy secondary against peyton is less dangerous than whoevers playing DT vs 2 probowl caliber running backs and fullback

Indy-L ....but if somehow we pull that one out, we could beat anyone....

Carolina-W ....that team is on a downward slope, i.e. QB questions, RB questions (startin to sound like us....), WR questions (I think they'll put Vash on Smith, should be a good matchup for us), Peppers fell off, we'l see....

Tampa Bay-W ....but a tough one.... they have a good run game, a plethera of QBs (Griese appearance?).... i'll give it to the home team....

Philly-W ....another tough one ...B-Dawk + Samuel + our WRs (who are they again?) = possible trouble..... but we did beat them last year, in Philly nonetheless, so I say Bears win....

Detroit-L ....and i'm reluctant to predict a loss here because i know we're looking for some serious revenge on those posers.... but i'll say split, home teams.... damn it....

Atlanta-W .....does Oklahoma City need a football team too?

Minny-W ...God I hate these fuckers.... Prediction: Berrian becomes the meat in an Urch/Briggsy samich... and then Mike B hits 'im in da mouth.... but seriously, STOP AP!!!! T-Jax is still T-Jax.... i'll split again.... home teams....

Detroit-W ....there she is...

Tennessee-L ....AFC wake-up call.... don't be fooled, the AFC south is tougher than the NFC east..... I only have us beating the texans, and even that is a tough one.....

Brown Bay-W ....shit packers....

STL-W ....Devin goes for two more....

Minny-L ....if I have to hear that god damn horn one more time.....

JAX-L ....they're good.... we allready know about the garrard/taylor/jones-drew combo.... i say they draft a stud receiver, and breakout year for saftey reggie nelson.... i like this team deep in the AFC playoffs as well....

N.O.-W ....once again (3 years straight) da bears finish what katrina started and eliminate the 'aints....

Brown Bay-W ....Rogers is hurt by now playin with the big boys.... who's their third?

Houston-W ...again, tough one, but we pull it out.... can't go 0-4 to an entire conference.... .....right?

holy shit.... 11-5....

that's good enough for at least #2 seed.....

lets see if our coordinators have figured out how to use there talent.....

....if we didn't have talent why would we have so many primetime games?

....and BTW, guess when Devin shines the most.....

I think I may be seeing a lot of wishful thinking. We had such high hopes for last year and we could have just as easily won that San Diego game that we lost with like one or two plays. Had we won, I think there would have been some momentum that would have likely saved the season and not put us in the "Oh my gosh, we need to rebuild everything" category. Not to mention the injury problems we faced, sure we lost Mike Brown as per usual, but look at what a difference Nate Vasher made in the one game he came in for at the end of the season. Looking at the potential of a healthy Brown, Harris, Urlacker, Vasher, Tillman, Briggs, Dvoracek, Ogunleye, A. Brown. With that line up intact even Archuletta could contribute if they got his back. Problem is still with the offense, the line can't protect our QB, we definitely have no runner, our receivers could possibly surprise, but that is going to fall back on Ron Turner creating scenarios that will set our guys up for success and use their strengths. Sure the big play is awesome, but sustained drives are more important than the big play because that sets up the big play, when will he get that? Stop throwing it on first down except sparingly and get first downs. So yea with a boatload of hope I'm with you, but hope is something that seems to have only worked once in the last 22 years. It actually seems like the Bears were as surprised as anyone to beat Seattle and make it to the Superbowl, then to add insult to inury Eli goes and gets his ring against Goliath on behalf of the NFC, which is what we should have done against his brother. As good as they looked on that road streak (which we contributed to and which contributed to our not making the playoffs), I still think the Bears are better than the Giants and that Rex is a better QB than Eli.

All that said to say, I think you and your fellow bloggers are wishing pretty big there with 10-6 or 11-5. Yes I can beleive it barring injury and getting past that first game is crucial, really the first two games we definitely can't afford to be chasing our division all season again. Last six years we are 2-4 on opening day. 2006 was one of those wins, an away game against GB (finished 13-3), 2002 a home win against the vikes (4-12 that season). The other four years we posted four losses on the opening day of the season (3 away, 1 home). It just doesn't matter, they have to want it and Lovie and Ron have got to set them up for success bottom line, they have to stay healthy!!!

shonbear, i like what you had to say there but damn that was hard to read.

Like you said, last year so much emphasis was placed on the 1st game of the season against San Diego, the importance of the game was definitely exaggerated. The reason it became so important was because of the number of injuries the defense suffered early in the season. If the Bears (defense) can manage to stay healthy, anything is possible in the NFC.

Believe it or not Jeff, I like the way you can Lovie break it down into quarters only I see things a bit differently.

QUARTER ONE
@Indianapolis- Loss
@ Carolina- Loss
TAMPA BAY - Win
PHILADELPHIA- Loss

Bears go 1-3, but no divisional game losses here so it's not ALL bad.

QUARTER TWO
@ Detroit-Loss
@ Atlanta- Win
Minnesota- Loss
Detroit- Win

Bears go 2-2 and play the win-loss cha cha losing at home to minny.

QUARTER THREE
Tennessee- Win
@ Green Bay-Win
@ St. Louis -Win
@ Minnesota-Loss

Bears go 3-1 with a key win against GB for playoff positioning.

QUARTER FOUR
Jacksonville- Loss
New Orleans- Loss
Green Bay- Win
@ Houston- Win

Bears go 2-2 after a sweep of Green Bay.

Season Prediction: 8-8 (wildcard baby woo!)

This prediction thing is fun, but complete bullshit especially before the draft. Obviously my predictions are full of assumptions, like drafting a rookie OL, WR and RB. Because if the team were to line up today, they would go about 4-12.

Here's what happened in San Diego - we all knew that that game was a possible loss going in, given that SD was arguably the toughest game on our schedule.

It should therefore have been a no-lose situation. Instead, we had the daytime equivalent of night terrors by watching Rex start the season pretty much fully in Bad Rex form. Most of us here were NOT expecting that. Still, a winnable game because the D was playing out of its mind - then Mike B goes down.

So we crawl out of that game not with the memory of how great the D was but of the dawning terror of Rex regressing and the loss of one of the Top 3 on D.

I know I wasn't fully out of Bear2theSB mode because I remember being VERY confident going into the KC game. Still very confident right through the first half, which went very well. Then Bad Rex rears his ugly head again, and this time in a weird, different way, playing well enough in the first half to nearly salt the game away and then he inexplicably turns Bad Rex in the second half when there should have been zero pressure, throwing two nasty picks.

(If memory serves, one of those nasty picks was a horribly thrown screen pass to fresh-out-of-college Garrett Wolfe, and the ensuing pick may have been the impetus for RT stupidly sitting Wolfe for the next 6 games or so.)

So we hold on and win the game as expected, but the swagger is already nearly gone due to a sudden void of confidence in the QB position.

Next comes Cowboys, another horrible game by Rex resulting in his benching and the D is decimated with DD down, Vasher down, who else? Tillman? Maybe Tommie? - can't remember the carnage now- and there went the season - whoooosh.

I didn't mean to take us on a horrible journey back to last year, but it all came apart pretty damn fast, and I'll still say, PRIMARILY due to the injuries suffered in games 1 and 3.

Here's the good part. Lightning doesn't strike twice, no way no how. I'm not saying Mike b or DD are going to make it through the season, no way do I have any basis to predict that, but I just don't see us having the barrage of injuries early on that we did last year. And assuming that, I'm also going to assume the D is going to return to championship form. With that comes lots of wins, regardless of crappy O.

And speaking of O, no way no how do I see Rex enter the season the same way he entered the last one. The same ingredients are not in the stewpot. RT tried to emasculate the cannon - which wasn't in cannon's DNA and therefore led to cognitive dissonance, mental fritzout, meltdown. Won't happen this year. Also the confidence level of Rex, if not back to what it once was (maybe unrealistically high at one point) should be at a good normal level. He's been through a cycle of great expectations followed by failure followed by a resurgence. I think he matured mightily last year.

We'll see that and we will get to hit the ground running. I'm not worried about the receiver corps - Rex will distribute the ball, and in Booker and Bradley we have two starters who will catch it, not drop it. Let's not forget about the best tight end tandem in the league, either.

Not predicting yet, there's likely no one who's had the patience to read this far. Sorry for the long post, it sorta got away from me.

I believe Briggs went down against Dallas.

Also, as an omen of the season to come, St Clair watched as Phillips blew by him and torpedoed Rex on the third play of the game in SD. Phillip called it the hardest hit he ever laid on a player and was astonished that Grossman was able to get to his feet.

16-0

Do I really think that'll happen? No, but I'm not going to allow any negative thoughts against any of those teams. These are 16 winnable ball games. Teams are always rising and falling in the NFL...so whatever, I'll go with my standing prediction and if I'm wrong, so what, I'm blind when it comes to the bears.

JB,

I like your thinking about NFL teams rising and falling and all teams being beatable. I've been a huge Bears fan for a lot of years now and I will be on the edge of my seat, pacing screaming and hoping for the best whether they have won any games or not, but I don't want to get my hopes so high that when they start dashing them I'm even more crushed than I would have been had I been more realistic.

Thinking like that and putting the offensive line, running back, receivers and injury problems aside, I could but I could go with a 10-6 prediction, if it's better, awesome, if it's worse, but we still squeak into the playoffs, awesome. I would really like to see even a playoff win, but if not let it at least be one where we get beat and don't beat ourselves.

JB, what are your thoughts about how the season will go if we go 0-2 in those first games, putting aside the blindness, do you think our players will get "losers mentality" that we've seen in the past?

On another note, for everybody, how about Chad Johnson in the news again, what about him on the Bears? Could our team keep his mouth shut, would he perform even better than Bernard Berrian and for draft picks wouldn't we get him cheaper than Minnesota paid for Bernard anyway??? Thoughts?
