It is very late so here are my quick thoughts about the first day of the draft:
1. I think we landed the tackle we wanted. And that's a good thing.
2. I hope this Forte character turns into a great running back.
What else do you want me to say? I didn't like the drafting of Devin Hester, remember?
AS FOR TOMORROW...
1. Guard
2. Safety
3. Wide Receiver
4. Quarterback
I'll be here live tomorrow after most of the picks throughout the day.

#3 Spanish Bear said . . .I've been looking around for some Forte info and it's odd. It's very inconsistent. One place will report that he's a poor blocker and the next actually says he might play fullback and refers to him as a "poor man's Brian Leonard". Some say he is only a straight line runner, then others call him elusive. Some question his durability, but the fact is that his monster senior season came right after a season ending injury his junior year.
The most interesting site I found is actually a Colts blog giving the reasons that they should draft him in the 2nd round. THere's a video attached that I found very encouraging, especially the last 2 or 3 clips. I'm kind of liking this guy.
I agree with Jeff exactly on our needs and priority. However, while we need a guard more I don't like any guard this early in the third so I go to safety. I am deperately hoping that Morgan will still be there at our first pick (switching with SF could be really important on that) and that we can take Greco and use him as a guard with the second one. After that I like Paul Hubbard and of course you all know I like Ainge.
Anyway, here's the Forte link:

#4 tenacious d said . . .I disagree with you Rancid. I think we should select a WR with our next pick (I like Earl Bennett, he´s from a top tier conference, he didn´t play with other stars in his team [like Felix Jones, for example], he´s got top intangibles, maybe a possesion receiver that won´t be much under pressure in his rookie year [we´ve got booker there]). With the #90 pick we should pick the best guard available (or maybe Zibs if he´s there).
I like Forte, this QB class isn´t very good so we could choose a good QB maybe next year. Right now we have very important holes in our team that should be filled, and we´re on the good way, IMO.April 27, 2008
#5 Duff Diggler said . . .Rancid,
Thanks for the link. The kid has great moves when gets to the second level. There were several clips where he just froze the defender with a little shoulder dip and left him grasping at air. He's not exactly a blazer, but looks to be fast enough. He did get caught from behind on the one long TD run. I liked the clip where he just ran over the guy and drug him into the end zone.
Jeff, I'd add OT to the list again for Sunday. We need to develop someone to prepare for Tait leaving in a year or two.

#6 Phil from SATX said . . .Well.....
I'm with everyone that Williams was a lay-up for JA. With Otah, Williams, and Albert there, he couldn't have gone wrong. I'm a little surprized that he went with a pass blocking OT and then passed on Brohm in the second.
I guess if the Colts liked Forte for a second rounder, you can pretty much bet the house on this kid. I don't want to poo-poo him, but don't you think he woulda still been there at 70? I've been watching youtube highlights of him, and I like what I see, but who does Tulane play?
Now Brohm is a Packer. That could be REAL bad. I think we coulda had 'em both....
.....at least Detroit fucked up, as always
BTW, I think "Steelers" shoud be changed to "Stealers" (Mendenhall at 23, and Sweed at 50 somthing.....)

#7 Phil from SATX said . . .My opinion is the Bears knocked it out of the park with the first two picks. I love (and predicted) that they had their pick of both Otah and Williams (and Albert) so they were able to pick the one they wanted and not the one they were left with. Williams sounds like a great and intelligent guy. Haugh's article was pretty compelling about him.
What I read about Forte I love as well. He was no reach (one of the dweebs on TV liked Ray Rice better) - and it sounds like he has a passion about football, and we all know that's exactly what was missing at that position. I can totally see him beating out Ced for the starting position but having these two deployed together and Ced actually getting his shit together and letting his pride move him to a different place. Think about what it would be like if that happened - all of a sudden we have a two back attack that makes us forget all about the byegone Benson/Jones.
Two great picks - but so boring that in all the coverage, no one talked about us for more than like 30 seconds. Steve Young, you're wearing out your welcome with me - I think you're smart as hell, but you've always hated Rex, which causes you to act completely perplexed saying with mock incredulity "I guess the Bears like Rex better than they like Cedric Benson" - well of course we do! There was no way we were going to take Brian Brohm or Chad Henne - it just didn't make any sense, but the idiots on TV are so far removed from our team it's a complete mystery to them. Whatever, I remember bitching about them last year.
So what's next? Is the next best guard the Chilo guy? Is he worth our next third? I am a little worried that Angelo feels that he could be done refitting the line with Beekman as the other guard - not against Beekman as guard but if he thought Beek was ready, why didn't he get in last year when we had left guard and were playing meaningless games anyway? That does not compute.
I agree with Spanish B, if you aren't worried about a new guard (which I am) WR is the next most important position. So I'm going WR/guard for the two thirds. I think there're a bunch of really good WR's left - isn't Mario Manningham still out there? Early Doucet? Given that there is some confidence showing from JA about Beek, think we should go balls out for the best WR we can get, even if it means trading up this morning, and take guard with the 2nd 3rd if we still have it.
Safety 4th, DT or QB 5th.

Safety 4th, DT or QB 5th. Still knowing nothing about Zbik, he sounds like a Chicago Bear. Would love to get him for that reason (kind of reminds me of the reasons I wanted Chris Zorich). Couple other names out there I'm thinking of - M. Griffin from Texas as safety, Jacob Hester as a new fullback (wouldn't that rock!)

#22 said . . .Pick #44 the Bears select WR Earl Bennett
BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter awarded all Conference honors since his freshman campaign. Junior totals included a team leading 75/830/5 after a career-best 82/1146/6 as a sophomore. Posted 79/876/9 as a freshman.
POSITIVES: Sure handed, possession receiver best in the intermediate field. Quickly releases into routes, nicely adjusts to the errant throw and looks the pass into his hands. Comes back to the ball, uses his frame to shield away opponents and makes the difficult reception with defenders draped on him. Displays good focus and concentration, coming away from the crowd with the ball. Relatively effective running after the reception.
NEGATIVES: Must improve his route running. Rounds off breaks and slowly exits routes. Marginal quickness and speed in his overall game.
ANALYSIS: Bennett has been an ultra-productive receiver in one of the nations top conferences. He projects well as a second receiver at the next level and should be a solid compliment for a team with a speedy wide out.
April 27, 2008
#23 Rancid said . . .Earl Bennett:
Analysis
Positives: Well-proportioned with long arms, thick chest, broad shoulders and thick muscle definition in his legs and calves...Split high with a firm midsection and a tight waist...Lacks explosiveness, but runs with a long stride and has the change-of-direction agility, along with good route stem to become a deep threat...Shows the ability to be very physical with defensive backs, using his hands well to push off to create space...Builds his acceleration quickly and has the linear speed to elude after the catch...Shows good balance and body control in his running stride, keeping his head on a swivel to look the ball in over his outside shoulder...Tough competitor who has an aggressive nature when asked to cut block, taking good angles to neutralize second-level defenders...Tough receiver in a crowd, showing the loose hips and shake to make defenders miss and the frame to adjust to the ball in flight...Plays with excellent awareness and field vision, coming back for the ball with good urgency when the quarterback is pressured...Positions his body to go up and haul down the pass in traffic...Demonstrates excellent ball concentration, coming out of his cuts and executing fluid stutter-step moves in his patterns...Shows good acceleration off the line and the hand punch to beat the press to get a clean release into the second level...Can threaten the deep part of the zone and can leverage, plant and cut when running his patterns...Will sneak up on the defender when trying to get open, using his balance and low pad level to separate...Shows good short-to-intermediate area quickness in and out of his breaks and can power through the jam with strong hand swipes...Has the ability to make the acrobatic catches, as he times his leaps well and uses his long arms to reach around the defender to secure the ball at its high point...Stays low in and out of his cuts, displaying the separation quickness to consistently go deep...Has the functional burst to get behind the defender before the catch, using his stride to get to the ball in a hurry, taking advantage of his height and long arms...When he keeps his pad level down, he is effective at getting into his routes fluidly, using his quick feet to get to the ball downfield, making proper body adjustments to extend his arm and pluck the ball...Smooth in his initial burst and can make proper body adjustments to elude at the second level...Knows how to use his size to power through arm tackles and is very good at shielding the ball from defenders...Especially effective at catching screen passes, getting to the ball even with his back to the quarterback...Uses his shake to make defenders miss and gets back to top speed in a hurry...Quiet, leader-by-example type who is a hard worker in the weight room, practice field and on game day...Tough blocker who does a nice job of facing up with aggression and has a good concept for taking angles when stalking second-level defenders...Makes a good effort to position and pester bigger pass rushers and works hard to sustain blocks...Knows how to use his hands to latch on and jerk the defender's jersey without getting caught...Once he escapes the press, he has a long stride to quickly eat up the defender's cushion...Has a good feel for the boundaries and end zone, keeping his feet in bounds while going vertical to make the catch...Has the power to drive defenders off when breaking back for the ball...Strong open-field runner who will bounce off tackles to gain extra yardage (has a fluid, smooth stride with a rapid turnover).
Negatives: Needs to improve his suddenness coming off the snap, but does build to top speed nicely...Has great hands, but will double catch at times...When he fails to sink his hips, he will sometimes take false steps coming out of his breaks...Shows good body control and has the flexibility to adjust to the ball, but needs to show better consistency (sometimes seems hesitant in his plant)...Slippery route runner, but does not have that sudden burst or second gear to win the race to the end zone on pure speed alone (best when he sets up the defender with double moves and head fakes)...Needs to improve his slide in the open zone and while he has good acceleration, he needs to use it with more consistency on transition cuts...Good short-area receiver, but when he fails to drop his pads, he struggles a bit to gain separation...Has had ball-security issues fielding punts cleanly and with his lack of suddenness, it would not be recommended to use him on special teams at the next level.
Compares To: CHRIS CHAMBERS-San Diego...Bennett might lack blazing speed, but he shows good quickness and body movement in his routes and can get off the line of scrimmage using power or finesse. His patterns are sharp and crisp with no wasted motion and he gets in and out of his breaks quickly when he keeps his pads down. He has outstanding field awareness and the ability to read coverage. He can locate the ball in a crowd and then separate. It is rare to see him misjudge a deep throw and he has also developed into a solid cut blocker. If not used as a deep threat, he will have good success moving the chains.

It also seems that the Bears went in with nothing to hide. #37 Shady said . . .Pick # 90 the Bears select Marcus Harrison
BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a senior after totaling 50/7/1.5. Junior-year numbers included 42/3.5/1.5. Missed time during the 2006 season after having his knee scoped. Tore his left ACL in the spring of 2007. Later arrested in August of 2007 for possession of marijuana.
POSITIVES: Nice-sized, athletic defensive lineman who makes plays when focused on the task at hand. Plays low to the ground with leverage, explodes off the snap, and keeps his feet moving up the field. Fluid changing direction, makes plays down the line and out to the flanks, and displays good movement skills. Smart, remains disciplined with assignments, and locates the ball. Used at both the end and tackle positions.
NEGATIVES: Engulfed at the point by single blocker and easily held up by opponents. Does not always go full speed. Has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, which hurt his conditioning.
ANALYSIS: Harrison has shown flashes of being a dominant game-changer on the defensive line the past three seasons. Injuries and off-field incidents have slowed his progress since his junior campaign. He must start to show some durability as well as determination to have a shot at the next level and to meet the potential NFL scouts feel he has.

S Craig Steltz
BIOGRAPHY: All-Conference selection as a senior after becoming a full-time starter then leading LSU with 101 tackles and 6 interceptions while also breaking up 7 passes. Junior totals included 42/4/9 when he started two games.POSITIVES: Nice sized safety that works hard on and off the field. Instinctive, quickly diagnoses the action and takes good angles to the play. Aggressive in all aspects of the game and an intimidating presence in centerfield who aggressively lays his shoulders into ball handlers. Quick in run defense and wraps up tackling.
NEGATIVES: Lacks top sideline-to-sideline range and slow getting to the flanks in coverage. Marginal closing and recovery speed.
ANALYSIS: Steltz comes off a terrific senior campaign in which he improved almost every area of his game. He does not possess the great speed yet his smarts, tenacity and ball skills makes him well suited for a zone system
April 27, 2008
#78 big rob said . . .Kiper just said Steltz reminds him of Doug Plank. Cool.
But then the entire board just said there is no plan for QB, which is bullshit.
Obviously they're gonna draft a guy to groom for possibly '09 and beyond.
'08 was the year of the Grossman in the eyes of JA and the Bears, no doubt about it.
The Bears are trying to win NOW. Steltz will help make that happen in '08, Booty or whoever was left would not.
I'd say JA did a nice job in the 4th round, even though having another white safety scares me a bit.

#81 big rob said . . .If we do take a QB I like Josh Johnson...
Overall: Johnson played 44 games in four seasons at San Diego (2004-'07), moving into the starting lineup in 2005. In his first three years, he completed 518 of 764 attempts (67.8 percent) for 6,711 yards, 70 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,138 yards and 17 touchdowns on 206 carries (5.5 average) in that span. As a senior, he may have been the most efficient and prolific player at any position in college football. He completed 205 of 300 attempts (68.3 percent) for 2,976 yards, 42 TDs and just one interception, finishing with an astounding 197.19 passer rating. He also ran for 674 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2008 class. He needs to add bulk to his tall but lanky frame and he still has much room to improve in terms of reading coverage and making his progressions

Why pick a backup QB who can't help you next year i the 4th round?
Like I said, I'd rather take Erick Ainge in the 5th or later with more offensive help, including another lineman, WR, TE, and possibly a FB.

With the 5 round selection the Bears take CB Zack Bowman
BIOGRAPHY: Junior-college transfer who started four games last season totaling 29/1/6. Played five games with the first team during the 2005 season and posted 27/2/14. Tore a ligament in his left knee prior to the 2006 season and was sidelined for the year. Tore a patellar tendon in his right knee during spring practice in 2007.POSITIVES: Well-sized cornerback with terrific physical skills and a serious medical history. Fluid transitioning to run with opponents off the line, displays good footwork in all directions, and physical throughout the action. Shows a burst of closing and recovery speed, has a nice break to the ball, and gets vertical to defend the throw. Effectively reads the action when facing the play.
NEGATIVES: Loses positioning against opponents with his back to the ball and struggles locating the pass in the air. Does a lot of face-guarding.
ANALYSIS: Bowman is a physically gifted defensive back whose game and development have been slowed by injury. He showed flashes of ability when healthy and looked good in All-Star games prior to the draft. Medical exams on his knees will ultimately dictate his draft positioning
