So I'm in a rehearsal studio...

...and I've got a cast of wonderful actors reading my dialogue and singing my lyrics and it's all terrific and then...

I have to read about this fucking dope running back going and getting his fucking dope ass arrested driving drunk in Texas. All because I wanted to know if the rumor that Casino Drive got sidelined for the Belmont was true. (And it is. Go Big Brown.)

I'd like to officially note that Cedric Benson has now taken the mantle from Mike Green as my least favorite Chicago Bear in the last ten years.

It's all a big joke to you Cedric, isn't it?

I guess your mommy wasn't there to help you this time...

This guy has to go the way of a certain Tank. He just doesn't get it does he?

ok I gave him the benefit of the doubt last time on the boat but this is crazy. fire his ass and give his money to me.

Did this guy get money for being good at something, or winning the lottery? Maybe this will make the nfl allow players to PROVE themselves first on the field before they shell out the dough.

That´s enough

We must cut this man right now. He doesn´t have the attitude nor the responsability needed to play a sport in a profesional level.
We´ve got Forte and Peterson, two guys who can´t be worse than him and, at least, they have a better attitude.
The only reason we can keep Benson is to look for a trade with other team, but now, who is going to invest in him?

Cut him now!!

Un-fucking-believable. Unreal.
Maybe Travis Henry's dope-smoking ass would be an upgrade after all. This guy apparently can't control his drinking, a la Maurice Clarette.
Matt Forte, has an unheralded third rounder ever been given such a golden opportunity? Son, keep your head down, work hard and resist getting your 'goose on, and these fans are going to be worshipping you after this asshole leaves town.

I do not want this man on our team any longer. He is not who we thought he was. I can deal with Forte, AP, Wolfe. I won't even compare this to Tank. Tank was a great player. Tank had a fantastic mean streak on the field. But he was an ass off the field so he had to go. CB is an ass on AND off the field. So screw him.

There's no way I'm buying his story on this one. If he wasn't drunk then this was his shot to really make the cops look like they screwed him last time. If you're CB and you're not drunk you're begging for them to give you the breath test and prove that they're just harassing you. He needs to go.

This explains a lot. Last year he was trying to run with a hangover. (alternative theory to CB sucking because of overbulking)

The indecision at the line wasn't just because of the horrible O-line. It was the headaches remaining from Friday (and possibly Saturday) before gameday.

The mug shot explains everything. Why the hell is he smiling?!?!?!?! His facial expression says, I don't give a fuck about football, the Chicago Bears, being successful in the NFL. His face says, I already got paid enough to be comfortable for the rest of my life and am content in being respected and admired in Texas (not Chicago). The last two incidents have occurred right after the draft. I wonder if the Forte signing crushed his seemingly fragile ego. I wonder if he really does not care about football and realizes that he will never be good enough to be successful at the NFL level, so he has mentally given up. Regardless, the mug shot kills me. At least fake like you look like you are sorry and wipe that goofy fuckin smile off your face!

June 8, 2008

#18 shonbear said . . .

Stepping back to look at this a little differently:

Here's the plan (love the FT Matte naming by the way). Don't release Ced just because his stupidy doesn't necessarily mean he'll play bad this year (even though his history points that way), but it's just the excuse you need to get the Fort in with the "ones" through the rest of the practices and preseason and into Ceds most likely upcoming suspension. If the Fort is looking as good as we all are hoping we have our starter. Ced comes in and spells him and potentially starts if he gets his on field play where it needs to be or if Forte gets hurt.

I still don't think they are going to release him unless there is some big money in it for the Bears, it's just their way. In the mean time maybe they need to be thinking of a Tank like written out plan for Ced to be telling the Bears about how he intends to change his habits and take responsibility. He should be going to the front office, stating his case that the "this is not just another boating accident" situation is what he says it was. The the latest situation he needs to stand up and be a man and take what's coming.

It just comes back to the fact I really don't see what other options they have at RB, free agency and their current backs. One unproven rookie, one lionhearted super special teams guy and another unproven young guy who can come up with some big plays here and there with the right play called at the right time.

On second thought though after listening to 670 the Score interviews with JA and their beat reporter, I'm not so sure they keep Cedric. Seems a lot more iffy now.

I still wonder if there is any financial benifit to trading or releasing him.

The bottom line here is that it's similar to the Tank Johnson issue last year. It doesn't matter at the end of the day what the details are. What matters is that here is a guy who has been in trouble before, and is facing a last chance to finally straighten up. So after promising his teammates and his coaches and Angelo that he gets it, he puts himself in this kind of situation.
That alone should be proof enough that he doesn't get it, and never will.

Chicago Bears Running Back Cedric Benson was arrested today for operating a bicycle under the influence of paint chips. Benson was seen by police riding a 1957 Schwinn, weaving erratically and repeatedly slapping himself on the behind while yelling, "giddyup haus!" When questioned by police, Benson was observed to have flecks of silver paint on his shirt and what policed described as "a paint mustache." Shortly into the questioning, observers say Benson fell to the ground, began punching himself in the face and yelling "Mama! Mama! They beatin' me again mama!"

Chicago coach Love Smith responded to questions about the alleged paint huffing of his running back by saying, "Cedric Benson is our starting running back. We get off the bus drinking, er, running here."

Someone above mentioned a possible suspension from Goodell. I wonder how likely that is? And now he probably wont get a break even if he was a victim in the boating incident becuase he's proven once again that he's a worthless citizen. I think these guys smile for their mug shots cuz they know they're going to be on the internet the next day even though the situation sucks for them and warrants a frown, not a smile.

This guy is starting to get into Pacman Jones territory. Pretty soon he'll be suspended for a year and when that happens, there aint no team thats gonna pick him up. He sucks the way it is. The difference between Ced and Pacman is that Pacman is actually talented and can be an asset to a team.

June 9, 2008

#32 Rancid said . . .

I like shonbear's take in #18. A suspension would be perfect. My take is a bit different as CB gets canned if Forte looks good. If he gets a 4 game suspension then that will give us a good look at Forte. If Forte tears it up (or averages at least 4.something per carry) it's bye bye Benson. If he sucks or gets injured, then we still have him as an insurance policy.

Again, for Benson, signs that you are not a good football player: Your teams fans are hoping that you are guilty of multiple crimes so that you can get a suspension so they can get a good look at your replacement. Not where you want to be exactly.

Ced's dead, baby, Ced's dead.

At least he's making it SO easy on us. And to think that he had ALMOST succeeded in doing the impossible - getting us behind him over the season because of an apparent cop overreaction on a lake.

While that still may be the case with the LCRA incident, this Tank Johnson-esque deja vu makes if CRYSTAL CLEAR that Benson is now no longer a Bear. Today, yes, tomorrow maybe, but the writing is on the wall, the news of the contract hit is on the street already - he's a dead man. NO LONGER A BEAR.

And in the end, I really think he did us a great favor by doing this. There doesn't have to be any locker room friction, no stringing us along with occasional bursts and big hits, nada.

It's for the best, really. I'm guessing that what's happening now, is the Bears are figuring out what free agent they're going to sign, whether Alexander, Jones or someone else. And the very second that deal is done is the same second that the Ex-Bear Benson is excused. I don't have an opinion as to who would be best for us, (hey Jeff let's make this the next headline topic - which RB should we sign?) - but I would love for us to pick on a combination of talent, character and heart - because the gutless Cedric Benson had too little of one and none of the other two.

It's all good folks, really, it's all good.

Now who's next?

#34 jdawg said . . .

wow -- just like Pacman? Pacman Jones?

You mean the Pacman Jones whose friend shot and paralyzed a bouncer?

You mean the Pacman Jones who likes to "make it rain"?

I didn't realize that hanging out with criminals, one who shot a guy, frequenting strip clubs with garbage bags full of singles is the same as getting hassled on a boat with your mom and friends, getting pulled over speeding through a construction zone and getting pulled over for running a yellow light and refusing a breathalyzer.

Hey Jeff -- how close are we to becoming “12 Angry Men”?

June 9, 2008

#35 Phil from SATX said . . .

jdawg, I completely agree that there is no connection between the Evil Pacman and the Don't Give a Shit About the Chicago Bears Ced.

I hope you will agree that at the same time - a) he's gone (because he is, no doubt about it) and b) he should be gone. His actions are proof positive that that nickname I gave him above is no misnomer.

I feel I'm become the defacto Benson apologist, which sort of blows my mind. I am not a fan of the guy, so here's what I posted on another site because I'm tired of typing:

My first reaction to the boating arrest was to cut him. Then new info started to trickle out which painted a much different picture than what the authorities said happened.

Then Benson gets a ticket for speeding in a construction zone. So did my girlfriend. She drives a 93 Ford escort and there was a trooper parked at the perfect spot, waiting for someone to not slow down it time. She was going 60.

Now he's pulled over for running a yellow light. He allegedly passed the field sobriety test but the cops thought they smelled booze. Benson has surely been advised by his lawyer to refuse the test. Book him Danno.

I'm not saying he's innocent, but I also believe he's not been proven guilty of anything other than speeding in a construction zone. Maybe he should be in bed at 2 AM. Is that what we're all really pissed about?

Bottom line with Ced or any person. A crime is a crime. Breaking the law is still breaking the law. Then again, what is the whole story?? I agree with the majority. Seems to me that he really doesn't care. Maybe he wants out of Chicago as bad as we want him out. What ever the case, I bet he gets cut.

I think Shaun Alexander would be a good sign. Another RB I would like to see in the "GSH" stripes; if he gets released. Lamont Jordan. I think he's still got some left in the tank. Plus both of these guys are vets. And they would bring some leadership to the locker room.

June 9, 2008

#38 Phil from SATX said . . .

The Tank and Ced deals are really pretty similar. While Tank's stuff was more serious since it involved guns, they both were supportable right up until the time that they put themselves in vulnerable positions, completely of their own volition. And there's a big difference between the two in terms of how they are viewed by the Bears - Tank Johnson was very important to the team and thus it pained the club greatly to have to draw that line in the sand. Most would agree we're still paying for Tank's inability to stay inside and keep his nose clean when he knew there was so much scrutiny on him, and so little room for error.

While Ced's offseason shenanigans do not rise to the Tank level (and again, obviously nowhere near a Pacman), he had to know he was under just as much scrutiny as was Tank in his last days, especially since he hasn't been the on-field performer that Tank was. He already knew he was on Jerry's shit list, yet there he was, driving after drinking, out alone by himself in his car at 4 a.m. in downtown Austin. He was essentially on probation by the Bears after the boating incident (just as Tank was) and he couldn't help violating probation.

Whether he was actually legally drunk or not has as little importance in this as it had for Tank - team probation isn't legal probation, it's a higher standard, one where Ced needed to show he was willing to put the Bears first, be a great citizen, do everything right. He wasn't willing to do that - it was basically summer vacation as usual for Ced. Party time.

Haugh pointed out in his article that the right thing for Ced would have been for him to show up for the fan convention, shaking hands and signing autographs, trying to win over fans that he has disappointed, instead of partying back in Austin, getting pulled over by the cops. I agree.

Ready to move on, I am.

I know plenty of people that have gotten DUIs that didn't lose their job. I'm not saying any of the offseason crap he's allegedly done is ok, but anything more than a suspension is unfair. I'm 25, same age as CB, and I can honestly say I do not drink and drive, but I know that most of my friends do. Some of them have gotten DUI's and I'm guessing some of you have either gotten DUI's or know plenty of people who have. When an average person gets a DUI they don't lose their job or even get a suspension because no one even knows about it. I realize playing in the NFL is a privilage and therefore players are held to a higher standard. I'm all for the suspension, and I'm all for him being prosecuted for DUI and losing his license. I will hope that he learns from it and doesn't do it again.
Is he an idiot? yes.
Has he been a disappointment? yes.
Is cutting him really what's best for this team? Doubt it.
I think most people want to cut him because they don't like him as a player, but he may be the best we can do right now.

Say what you want, I stand by my Pacman comment. He's getting in trouble so frequently now he's going to get to a one year suspension, or half year suspension. Who else in the league was closest to the punishment Pacman has been given? I'm not necessarily talking about the severity of the crimes but the number of occurences. Chris Henry and another Bengal come to mind who I think were given half year suspensions? Aside from that, I think, when its all said and done, Ced will be the next closest to Pacman in terms of suspensions and on the NFL front office shit list. He'll probably have another violation or two between now and the start of training camp anyway. Some of you seem to be standing up for Ced and I want to ask why. Why do you love him so much? What has he done for you? Are you still hanging on the glimpse of #4 draft pick potential? You can put his ass in the Kijana Carter/Ryan Leaf category as far as I'm concerned.

June 9, 2008

#42 jdawg said . . .

I don't love him but this is fucking America -- innocent until proven guitly. So far he is guilty of speeding in a construction zone, nothing else.

If the facts come out that he's guilty of more than he gets to take his licks, whether that means being cut, suspended, what have you.
