Hester Reports

Friday, July 25, 2008 | Jeff

Devin Hester reported to camp today without a new contract (but presumably with the promise of one). Everybody at once...whew.

Dan Pompeii continued his career of remarkably sub-par sports writing by calling for the Chicago Bears to trade Devin Hester in today's Tribune. Sometimes I think these guys are so eager to bring attention to their columns (understandable in the over-congested market of sports opinions) that they completely lose grasp of the fans that sit and read their work. Steve Rosenbloom - in the same newspaper - ponders the possibility of trading Hester for Favre. Rosey was my favorite Chicago writer last season but somebody needs to make him pee in a cup.

Or I have an idea. Maybe we could allow the most exciting player in the sport to continue to play for the Chicago Bears? Would that be alright with the Tribune? Maybe we allow this once-in-a-lifetime performer to play his entire career here and not approach football like we're buying Best Buy stock?

Assholes.

also, pft has the eagles interested in trading andrews - one of the better guards in the business.

Welcome back Skunk. Now work on those routes. The better show you put on in camp, the more you can demand at the table. #23 belongs in Chicago.

Hester is there, but has not joined practice. What gives?
When is the Manning Jr. trade coming anyway?

Hey, the Cubbies called up Jeff Samardzija and he pitched today. Any chance the Bears can call him up as well?
"Hey, Jeff, while you're in town, we need a #1 WR..."

Been gone a few days on biz. I'm relieved that Hester is back in the fold and this crisis has been averted. That is a major exhale moment.
I'm also happy that it looks like Williams is going to be fine health wise so no major blows in the first few days of camp.
But in responce to a question Po'd asked on a recent thread: No. I would not have any positive feelings about this season if Orton won the QB battle. He just doesn't have any upside.

HESTER is one of the great ones.
Compare him to “other kick returners” at your own peril.
He will learn No. 1 WR like Michael Jordan learned to shoot jumpers mid-career.
The great ones do what people say can’t be done.
The great ones break the mold.
A case can be made that it would make some good business sense to trade Hester for a one and a two or something like that, but you just can’t trade the great ones.
Hester will go on to help define our franchise and forever be linked to names like Butkus, Halas, Payton, Singletary, Urlacher the names that made it all worth it being a football fan.
GMs and players say what the need to and do what they have to when it comes to $$ and contracts, but the great ones transcend all that and make you believe this is still the same sport you played as a kid and bring back that JOY like nothing else.

I saw that article about trading Hester an thought"Are you F*%king kidding" an then I thought is this the best you could come up with,What if Urlacher didn't show up.
Would Dan Pompeii suggest he be traded too?
I swear some of these local writers are just as bad as the nat'l writers when it comes to covering this team.

Trade Hester... I gave it a lot of thought. Tried to see their side.

Still unfathomable. He is beyond description- so exciting, breathtaking, thrilling. Game changer, x factor, one of a kind, whatever you call it.
Fucking idiots. Im done reading that shit.

Meanwhile, I am starved for more camp news than I can get.
How does my boy Jamaar Williams look? What about Earl "Hines Ward" Bennett? Come on! More news!

I am going to say this one more time, but I'm sure it won't be the last. FUCK FAVRE! But of course there will always be some schmuck out there who thinks all our problems would be solved by getting this guy. That is the exact kind of crap that made me stop reading that turd of a newspaper, The Tribune, years ago. We are not trading Hester, the most exciting player in the game, for this int throwing dinosaur. In fact, I wouldn't give a bowl of piss for his ass. Let hum suffer.

Yeah it's all pretty stupid. Trading Hester would be a whirlwind of hell and chaos and I think the Sears Tower would topple over in the process. Well, I live in the Bourbonnais area and I'll be hitting up camp within the next few days so I'll give you guys a seemingly untainted version of the events that I witness.

Look at the last 20 bears first round picks, how many of them have made any impact at all. So to trade Hester for picks is beyond ludicrous as you would then have to pay a number one pick way more than Hester would take at this stage of his career, and then the odds of this player being any good are low. This team that pays Benson, Grossman and others multi-millions based on POTENTIAL won't pay a top producer before he even has to ask and to force him to throw down the gauntlet. On the other hand if Hester was traded to a team with half a brain we would get to see some of the all time great NFL highlights, he wouldn't be a Bear but he would light it up. Don't you think Bill Cowher would have figured out how to use Hester? Maybe he should come out of the backfield every now and then.

i've made the formal decision to attend camp next season - and report directly from there. that way we can get real analysis of what's happening on the field. hopefully i'll be able to secure a press pass.

as for the schedule:

practice is tonight at 7 pm. orton will run with the first team.

we'll have to wait till late to get any real feedback. it seems kyle hasn't performed particularly well to open camp and rex has been solid.

That's a great point, Traveling. Let's just take all few of the really good picks and trade them to increase our risk. Great idea.

Jeff, seriously, we'd donate to you for going there and giving us real and detailed info. Stick up a donate button using Paypal. No big deal. I'm feeling animal's pain - do these idiots not know that we've been beyond starved for real Bears info yet we get like seven sentences about a practice? What else do these guys have to write about? In the dead of summer? Very disappointing so far. And twitter is not very fulfilling either - somehow seems a harbinger of the downfall of civilization and end of real communication. At some point, it'll only be the blogs.

Jeff, did you catch Haugh's commentary on Orton? He said after two bad picks Orton redeemed himself by throwing some good balls in tight spaces requiring accuracy - "his strength" according to Haugh.

Hau-whaa? I don't think he was being sarcastic either. Orton has strengths but I was not aware accuracy was one of them.

I'm back in civilization and glad to see that Hester is back in camp. We will obviously sign him. Just a matter of time. I won't even address the trade Skunk for Favre shit. It doesn't even deserve it. Also, Haugh is now on the ass list.

Concerning writers, I have to tell you guys that this is the first place I come for Bears news. After 3 days out in the woods I didn't check ESPN, SI, or anything else. The reality is that there are only a few facts (which everyone can get), and the rest is just fluff opinions. I'd rather come here and get the slant of die hard Bears fans, than the slant of "professional experts" trying to draw attention at any cost. So with that in mind, I'd donate a few bucks to get jeff a bird's eye view.

hey fellas - unfortunately nothing in regards to information from anybody though i appreciate the camp support. we're going to work on a sponsor for this - shouldn't be impossible.

summaries: everyone thinks hester is faking an injury. everyone knows orton is not going to start in indianapolis.

other notes (I subscribe to Scout.com):

Beekman still looks overwhelmed and overmatched

Bennett is catching everything thrown to him

Forte looks as good in pads as he did in shorts

Davis has been the star receiver so far -- he's added some muscle and looks 1/2 step faster

Harrison is starting to show some real bull-rushing ability

Monk has looked a little lost

that's all I can remember from the top of my head.

People stepping up in camp is great but I just generally cheer for no bad injury news every practice. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

I live in Tampa and they are freaking about the possibility of trading for Favre. In addition to having unproven Rodgers at the helm of an otherwise pretty decent team, that should take a lot of wind out of the Packers fan's sails. The hardcore ones want Favre back there so bad. Could help knock them down a little. Especially if Tampa or whoever starts kicking ass and getting a lot of attention.

I have a lot of friends from Wisconsin and was stuck living there for a pretty long time. I lost a lot of $$ in my teenage and young adult years while Favre destroyed us. I am enjoying this debacle oh so much.

And the SB is here. Come on Bears!!

Only news that has really interested me from training camp was that Rashied got behind the D twice for big catches.

Im still saying its Booker and Lloyd that start against the colts. Rashied is a great # 4 option. Booker and Lloyd, then Hester, Rashied at #4 and Bennett startin at #5. which of couse leaves bradley out again

Hester could move up higher, but not if he doesnt practice. Im so happy training camp is here.

Dont know if this made a ripple on the site, but the Bears signed Hawaii receiver Ryan Grice Mullen. To make room the bears waived Fullback J.D. Runnels. Cant imagine Mullen making the team, but hes quick, runs good routes and has pretty decent hands. Only thing holding him back is the fact hes way short. Should be a good trainin camp player

I tend not to read to much into the local writers covering training camp. I stick to Joniaks blog:

a couple other things:

1. we're very deep at tight end with kellen davis performing real well

2. i think matt forte is starting in indy. he's apparently awesome. then again, it's the bears telling us this.
