With rumors that Chris Williams is close to signing and every other contractual situation under control, Jerry Angelo must now turn his attention to wrapping up Devin Hester for the long term before the start of the 2008 season.
Two reasons:
1. Hester is the most important single entity in the organization and his happiness can only lead to good things.
2. If the Bears utilize Hester as intended (more receiver), his price tag will only increase week after week.
Do it now, Jerry.

He's an incredible weapon and must be used properly ahemTurner!ahem. The fact is, we haven't seen it at WR yet, and trying to come up with a contract based on future results is a difficult thing to do. Perhaps my biggest fear this year is spreading the Hester Nutella deliciousness too thin, and tragically losing him to injury...
I am sure the Bears are gonna figure this one out. I have faith in Cliff and Jerry when it comes to negotiating. Early round draft picks on the other hand... not so much.

#5 Aaron Rodgers said . . .Details on Urlachers new deal:
"According to sources, Urlacher and the Bears have come to terms on a revised contract, which includes a one-year extension, thus ending their offseason contract squabble.
Urlacher, 30, had four years and approximately $25.5 million remaining on his contract. Under the terms of the upgraded deal, Urlacher will receive a $6 million signing bonus along with a $1 million bump in salary each of the next four years. The sides also have agreed to extend the pact into 2012, at a salary of $7.5 million. Urlacher can earn an additional $500,000 in a workout bonus in 2012.
That's a total of roughly $43.5 million over the next five years, with $18 million in new money for the six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All Pro."

hester forces opponents to re-think their entire special teams game plan. he provides the offense with remarkable field position on almost every set of downs, thus giving the defense longer fields to play with.

#10 New NFL Power Rankings said . . .Matt,
NFL contracts are nuanced to the point that they are only good for two maybe three years. I agree that when you sign a contract it should be honored, but teams need to protect themselves from players who fall off in talent, otherwise, we would still be over-paying for Adam Archuleta, and when a player has some leverage he should use it (professionally... Tommie Harris comes to mind). The Bears, under Phillips and Angelo, have honored their own better then any team out there. I hate that BU went to the media (I hated the level of manipulation exerted by Lovie when his agent took to the talk shows to negotiate his contract extension) but he had to make a statement. He wanted more dough, he is worth more dough, and thankfully, he got more dough.
If you want to get pissed off at something try this on for size - think Michael McCaskey at the helm of this team again.

#11 jeff said . . .ESPN has the Bears ranked 25.
Our defense is sick, nasty and stacked, and they will be dominant this year ... How are people sleeping on the Bears' D???
Defense and ST alone gets this team 25 wins.
We still need a left guard!! But the way Lovie insisted we were not ading a veteran running back -- and then did -- makes me think they're doing exactly the same thing regarding left tackle and that they have one more trick up their sleeve.
If we get the left guard slot taken care of, we'll be a running team again, solid across the o-line. And if we can run like wild with Forte and KJ, that will open the pass.
I'm not saying we should be No. 1 ...
BUT 25?????
People are selling this team short.

Give the man a 20 year, 4.5 billion dollar deal and I wont blink. As for being ranked #25, good. Fine. We want teams to sleep on us. We're coming.

#14 Phil from SATX said . . .I completely agree with Animal. I hold my breath a lot when a play is about to start, but only with #23 standing way back there do I hold it for positive reasons with intense confidence. When other teams are adjusting their game plan and that player is getting you that much yardage/scoring consistently then yeah, he is the most important player. Lock him up. Overpay him. Do not let him go and futher re-write NFL record books somewhere else. The jerseys will pay for the bonuses. Do it.
The rest of the time it is more like hand wringing, hair graying, finger nail biting cold sweats. I wonder how much the Bear's Offense has prematurely aged me in my life. Oh well I have plenty of bad habits. Ain't giving up the Bears in this lifetime so hopefully they can get it done. Don't need to win big, just win. And RT please don't draw the plays out of a hat each down, oh wait maybe... I really don't like him.
July 22, 2008
#15 Pissed Off said . . .Let me throw my hat in the ring too - Hester IS the most important Bear, and like Jeff says, without catching one pass. No other single Bear can possibly make the impact he does, and the only other candidate will be at the QB position. I'm hopeful Matt Forte will be inching his way up here too - I believe he will have a huge impact on improving our team this year (belief mainly based on hope). There was a year when Mike Brown had dibs on that title, single-handedly changing games.
But Hester gives at least the promise of it every single game. And changes field position just by being out there.
I am totally psyched about the Urlacher signing - all signs point to a totally unified team going into this preseason. The issues that helped to break down this team are all gone - principally involving RBs and their issues, but also including a long term Briggs, a happy Urlacher, a long term Tommie, Alex Brown restored to his rightful position (how about a vote for him for Teammate of the Year given how he dealt with his demotion - shared with Rex maybe), Fred "Drive Kill" Miller ridden off to the sunset, Adam "Matador" Archuleta gone as well, the selfish Berrian now a juicy enemy target, the bad teammate Moose just a memory - check it out people! Major major good karma and positive attitude settling over this group.
25th? HA! Bring it on, you NFL idiots!
Gotta say I loved the Raymond James Stadium post from last thread too. Can't wait for camp - one day! Let's not have anyone drinking and speeding to camp, okay?
July 22, 2008
#16 mikebdot said . . .Does anyone actually have the positivity deep inside about this years outcome if Kyle wins the job and is the opening day starter?
Regarding Hester, it'll be just like every other athlete, if he gets better and is more valuable he'll pull an Urlacher and want to re-negotiate anyway. Contracts mean nothing. That said, we need to get a deal done for him cuz thats how it works.
Aaron Rodgers in unproven and neither I or apparently the Bears want him. It would take too much for a guy who might give you nothing. Plus GB isnt letting him go...Farve will have to retire for real someday and when that comes, Aar0n is the replacement.
And now actually regading this thread, I am happy that the face of the franchise was extended and given more money but mostly that now he should be happy. I've never questioned how hard he plays but a happy #54 cant hurt. As for Hester, he is spectacular but I just have a hard time putting him up there in importance with Urlacher and Tommie and other key players who play more than just a few downs per game but deep down I know how important he is and that he changes games and without him we could easily lose several more games. I guess I'd just like to see him emerge at another position that we can use all that talent at instead of just kick returning a few times per game. Lets get this sick talent working for us every down on offense...you know what I mean?!?!?! I too hold my breath when they kick it to him, 1st hoping that he catches it and doesnt screw up the play...then hoping he goes the distance.

Now that he has a year under is belt h should be golden on the offense. I wonder how good a DB he would have turned out to be if they had left him there.
I might argue though that Mike Brown could be considered the most important entity, at least he's in the running.
Let's hope that one of our QB's and our running backs can blow all of u out of the water with their play this year.

#20 Mike said . . .If Kyle wins it, it can only happen if he's made drastic strides over the offseason (and I don't count striding towards the bar) - if that happened, then I would be confident. But my real confidence is that this quarterback "derby" is no derby at all - Rex is the de facto starting QB, now and at the start of the season. And be it stupid or no, I am confident in him, and I'm even more confident in the fact that we will strongly outplay all expectations for our offense (maybe not so hard to do because expectations are nil). It's going to go way better than the world thinks, and it just needs to go a little bit for us to really wreak havoc given the other stellar parts of our team.
If they can greatly improve on just two things, it will lead to the third:
1) Way fewer false starts.
2) Way fewer sacks.will lead to
3) Way fewer 3 and outs
Removing Fred Miller will help on #1. Better line play, Chris Williams, better blocking by Matt Forte and a smarter Rex will all help on #2.
If we can succeed at #3, we should really win nearly all of our games - simple as that.

Duff, I think your list is about perfect. I can't really speak to the Sid Luckman/Red Grange listing, but of the players of my era, I think you're exactly right.
Smitty, think you're there too - it will take that kind of guaranteed money to get him to sign. As PO'd said, it will all get torn up later anyway, if he obtains any kind of big receiver success. But you do it now, and then you keep doing it later.
One more tip of the hat to Angelo and crew for being maybe the best negotiators and closers in the business. They got it all done (assuming Williams signs) and did it on time - only Hester to go. That's pretty big stuff there, and we need to appreciate them for it. Now it's up to the coaches and players - let's see how they do.

5 years - 20 million - 12.5 guaranteed
1 million bonus for catching 50+ balls
1 million for scoring 6+ touchdowns
1 million for 500+ receiving yardsso the deal could be worth as much as 5 years, 35 million

Yeah JA and company have always been great at signing our draft picks and very good at keeping most of our good players. No complaints there. It's some of the actual picks and lack of FA signings that baffle me.
It isn't over yet but his grade has been creeping up this offseason. We still need a proven LG. Hope it works out. I heard someone saying that they expect Metcalf to play a lot better after recovering from a broken hand I think. I hope that they are trying out their stand up routine. That is not what I want to hear. But after the we aren't signing a vet RB talk, hopefully he is just holding his cards close.
I heard Larry Allen may come out of retirement. That's cool that he is still alive and kicking. Bentley, R. Brown for back up at least. If we learned 1 thing last year it is that the O-line (as stated, false starts, sacks, 3 and outs= drive killers and D strainers) is where it all begins. Without it every other position on O and eventually D will suffer.

I will not feel confident going into the season with a servicable back-up as our starter. Kyle Orton can not beat the best defenses in the league. He can not lead a team from behind. Fundamentally he has a weak and inaccurate arm, lacks mobility, and can not read defenses well enough to audible. Turner will be forced to run a conservative offense, eat time off the clock, try to win the field position battle, and we will never spread a defense. We will see 8 men in the box on 1st and 2nd downs, with a blitz buffett on 3rd and long.

I would like to believe as much as anybody that Terry Metcalf could actually be a good lineman, and that the reason he sucked so badly last year was a hurt hand (first I heard of it). Problem is, I don't believe it. And it has been distressing to me that our 4th round pick from last year appears to figure so little into their plans - Beekman was signed because he was supposed to be versatile, guard or center. And he's not in the running for a wide open guard position? Sounds like a bad pick to me. Oh well, Jerry still gets an offseason A either way - although reserving my right to look back in hindsight - if the line still sucks this year, A's can turn into F's Jerry - believe it! I'm sure he thinks of it as an additional draft.
My guess is they will target a FB, Guard, and QB on the offensive side of the ball, and anybody who has a history of either creating turnovers or applying pressure to QB's on the D side (with a Cover 2 background).

#74 Anytime said . . .Who let that dick Darren Sharper become an ESPN analyst??? He ripped the Bears (of course) with his NFC North update, and said the Bears wouldn't win with either QB (of course). (you can see the disgusting video on the Bears page on ESPN)
Did he forget all the beatings his teams took during the playoff runs we had under Orton AND Grossman?
Bias dick. This is the guy who CRIED in the media about Grossman talking too much smack after burning his ass with a TD pass and a win. This is the guy who talked shit to Dez Clark for no apparent reason also. What a cock.

#75 jeff said . . .Turns out Dusty D has already busted his shit too. The bears reportedly have
"five players injured in the first eleven minutes of practice."I was feeling so optimistic about an hour ago.

#77 Pissed Off said . . .Dude your way too far in Hesters corner.
That thing said Kreutz and Jones were on the PUP list, does that mean neither can play the first 6 weeks or is this something different. Is Beekman our new center?

#78 Viva said . . .Never mind, they can come off the PUP anytime during training camp, check the chicago tribune for camp updates....way better and more detail than that twitter thing.

#80 Viva said . . .Thoughts and prediction regarding the Bears:
1) There will not be any open QB competition. The Rex roller coaster will unfortunately continue this year without the presence of consistent QB play. No one will know if good Rex or bad Rex (I hate that phrase) will show up every week. We will be in the same situation next year looking for a stable quarterback who is not such a liability.
2) Dusty D is a bitch who can't even stay on the practice field for 10 minutes. I was so excited about this guy and the fact that he played with Tommie in college and he loved him, but I'm done hoping I will ever get to see him play in a Bears uniform.
3) Kevin Jones will be the reason we go 9-7 or 10-6 rather than 7-9 or 6-10.
4) Mark Bradley who was granted the #1 WR spot by his coach a couple months ago and says he is "ready to do what he does." I hope that means he does not tear his ACL in his knee again in a couple days. Very unfortunate. I remember the game a couple years ago in Detroit when he got injured. He almost had a 100 yards at half before he got hurt.
5) I hope Urlacher's signing bonus will make him become more of a leader and less of a pouty baby when ever things go wrong or they lose a game. I know he has never been very vocal, but I do believe the other guys look up to him and if they are going to be successful on D, #54's play and attitude needs to be a 100%.
6) Don't mean to be so negative. There are some good things too: We have now signed all our rookies I believe and Williams seems to be smart and have a good attitude. Glad he inked before the 1st practice. I like Bennet, Forte, and Steltz a lot too.
7) Restructure Hester's deal a little bit. You don't have to pay him #1 WR money yet to get this deal done. But, Hester has certainly outperformed the special teams contract he is under and deserves some money for being the biggest game changer and play maker in the last 2 years. Pay him a little to say thank you for that Arizona game, that game in New York against the Giants, and the first play of the Superbowl a couple years ago. Not to mention that he did it again in '08 even after the whole league knew about him and was game-planning against him.

#81 Viva said . . .What do you think we could get in a trade for Skunk?
I'm not suggesting we should, but the thought is tantalizing. There are plenty of teams that would overspend...

#82 animal said . . .Do you think Hester read this thread and decided to hold out?
July 23, 2008
#83 animal said . . .Dude are you kidding? A trade?
We need to be rioting in the fucking streets until they give Hester a deal. Remember this dude is playing on a rookie second round pick salary- jack shit in NFL terms.I would appreciate the visits in prison after my attempts on JA's life if he fails to sign Hester.

a lot to you or I.
Jack Shit to a decent NFL player.
Peanuts to a superstar.
Please."Pay the man his money" (in the John Malcovich "rounders" accent).
Pay him like you owe him. Play him like he is the best player on your team, the single most exciting player in football, a game changer, a threat every single time he comes near to touching the ball. Pay him like you owe him in large part for a super bowl run, and for all those prime time games you got last year.
Pay the man his money.

#85 animal said . . .Pissed Off, how can any bears fan not be all the way in hester's corner? we win like three games without him a year ago and get nowhere near the super bowl the year previous.

If they don't fix this Hester thing those lame ESPN rankings are not so lame anymore.
This situation is very stressful on the heels of all the positive stuff that's trickled out so slowly over the off season. We've got enough to worry about with this QB competition, unknown receiver corps potential, the running game and the offensive line.
This just sucks the air out of my excitement for the season. If there's any truth about Dusty D being truly down again that's a major downer too. What the fuck man!!!
