On the Seventh Day...

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 | Jeff

Once again, homeboy Roy has come through over on YouTube with the sportsfansnetwork.

Day 7: Video.

Day 7: Opinion from Roy.

Opinions on another day from camp:

1. First off, Roy's video commentary looks like one of those videos they show of some nut in a wood shack who believes the government can hear his thoughts. I love him but it's somewhat bizarre.

2. I think the next development in Rex v. Kyle will come a week from Thursday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

3. Health. That's the story of the next 8 days.

Rex looks good. I love seeing all the passes to Hester and Olsen. Hope that is the trend in the regular season.

and, Steltz had a pic today. Right on.
Forte is quickly becoming the new Chicago darling. Man I hope he stays healthy and just gets his stated goal of 1,000 yards.
Sounds like Nick Hill is MIA, and this after we have been told by those watching camp that he looks fucking terrible.
Chris Simms on his way in?

A couple nice picks by Bowman if I do recall in a very small sample of plays in Roy's videos. Hopefully he is another solid defensive back picked by Jerry in a later round. I also read that McBride was really solid last year when he played...so my question is why is Ricky Manning still on this team? Also, does it seem like Hester is going across the middle for a lot of his catches?

Pretty big conspiracy theory there by Robbie, thinking it may be more than a coincidence that the Bears released Nick Hill the same day Favre asked to be reinstated... I still think there's NO chance Brett lands here.

So I guess that means Caleb Hanie gets the 3rd string spot? Who knows, but one thing is clear from the videos, the Bears offense needs all the help it can get. We need more bodies Jerry, stat!

Aw crap, more Favre to the Bears shit. I hate that. Even that will not deter me from being a huge fan of this Roy guy. I was less impressed with Kyle today. It would be nice if Rex could pull away and continue to impress. I am loving the inside view of camp, especially as this guy is about as objective as I've seen. This is the most imformed about the Bears I've ever felt pre-season. I think as a team we are looking great with the exception of the Oline. If there is someone, anyone, we need to pick them up.

I finally watched the videos from the first five or six days and all I have to say is, why didn't Haas play last year? I hope he gets a real shot this year. Bradley looks good, but that info about his potential laziness is disconcerting. Wolfe looks great, Forte seems amazing, hea has great speed and burst. Several people keep saying Rex and Orton look even, don't agree, Rex looks much stronger (except the fumbles/snaps whatever) I think at the fast pace they keep during camp it's going to happen, not to mention the heat/sweat factor. Going to the shot gun more often will be great. No huddle sometimes too would be good to keep the defenses guessing and not allow them to get any breathers.

O line, is a major concern folks. Get Reuben back, pick up a FA, something!!

If we solidify our #1 QB by the second preseason game and improve our offensive line, those last two preseason games will be so valuable in the offense being able to be cohesive and work as one in regard to the line and receivers.

I still have hopes that we see something that demonstrates improvement in the first preseason game. I reserve the right to change my opinion after that game. Remember they don't play the "ones" very long in that first game, so we really won't be able to tell. I say to amazing drives for Touchdowns and then sit them and keep them safe. ESPECIALLY MIKE BROWN!!

Roy's rocking my world. These great videos, and now commentary - I hadn't caught any commentary before Jeff posted last night, and I sat there at about midnight and watched his extemporaneous 10 minutes in thrall, and then watched the day's video - I liked that order, helped me to know what to watch for in the video. At first you think he'll be strange, then he just becomes strangely compelling, and by the end you have trust in the guy. There's a little bit of initial Unibomber vibe to the video, but that wears off as you get to know him. This is the kind of stuff I imagined to get from Jeff if he went, and he still should go, but this stuff is great as is. My only complaint was too much on the Favre conspiracy. Not strange at all that an underperforming guy gets cut, and while it does mean another will be signed, I don't think we have a clue as to who. Roy makes an interesting point about the lefty Simms and the problems that creates.

Interesting commentary about how good McKie looks - maybe that guy will actually start doing something. There are a few on here who have been in McKie's camp - can't remember who (Jeff maybe?) - but I'll be happy to jump on if he proves he's better than he showed last year.

It looks to me like separation is beginning to show between Rex and Kyle - I think experience is a big part of it, but so is skill. Kyle helps close the gap on lack of experience and skill with his height and strength, and he does have a good arm, but you can see him hesitating more and then firing, with sometimes bad results. Repeated picks in the corner of the end zone - that was the stuff of Griese, remember?

Video was a lot more watchable to me on my wife's laptop - wonder what he was talking about when he referred to the better definition stuff coming? Al - from yesterday's thread, I don't remember you ever throwing that out there about Bradley - maybe you did and I couldn't remember - but that certainly would have provided some answers to the strangeness between the Bears and Bradley last year. The guy could be a lazy prick which we don't see - maybe not over-the-top like Benson but enough to just perpetually stay in the doghouse. He HAS looked like the best receiver to me, and do you notice he seems to like to show his speed after the whistle - that one race with Peanut, but it seems to happen almost every time. I took that as his desire to win the job, maybe it's just his prickiness.

Always had high hopes for the guy, still do, but maybe in Lloyd we have a replacement. I had mentioned Rideau, he didn't show up in yesterday's tape, what about Fontel Mines? He looks huge to me, tight end-like - trick of the tape? Seems to catch everything too. I also agree about Hass - he may not be too fast but it looks like all you have to do is get him in tight situations and he'll make grabs all day long. Maybe a 3rd down clutch receiver like Rash was in '06? Probably doesn't make the roster again, though.

Man, it's great to be in camp, especially now that we can watch! Thanks Roy!

Idonije, Bowman does look good, he was a projected 1st round pick a couple years ago until he had an injury...or was it drug problem...I cant remember. Anyway I think he'll be a steal. With our good secondary it'll be tough for him to get time this year but maybe next? And yes, why is Manning still here, must just sit all day long.

My thoughts from watching the highlights and commentary: Bradley appears to be practicing with the 1st team, he cant be that far in the doghouse, maybe I'm just making excuses cuz I desperately want him to be our #1. Nice to see Olin mixing it up on his 1st day, that guy must be a prick, good for us. Way way too many McKie runs, I dont care how good he looks. Forte cannot pass. Kyle with his 2 picks, and most by any QB so far in camp, is not leading the competition nor is it even. I hate the overall public perception of Rex being a fumbler of the snaps when all QBs do it and just as much, I think it was just that it happened in key spots in Rexs career and so they are remembered? I dont know. Brett Favre will not be a Bear....ever. No conspiracy theory that Nick Hill was released the same day Brett filed his reinstatement papers, just conincedence and I dont think the Bears have plans to pick up another QB unless its some undrafted guy.

#13 Pissed Off said . . .

Hey Phil, I saw both of those stories too, I call bullshit on that. Why would Kyle have looked better, according to Roy Rex was better, this whole think is just so screwed up. If you have 10 people watch 10 different practices religiously, you could have so many varied results on who people think was better. Was Vaughn saying that cuz he thinks thats what the majority (kyle fans) want to hear? Why is it not a unanamous thing. Its just really starting to piss me off, I guess i need to go there and watch for myself since I cant rely on anyones opinions.

And regarding Manning Jr, I'm all for him getting another shot, I realize we have a ton of new guys and he had a down year last year but I'm all for giving him another shot, that or get something for him as Phil said. As far as I've heard he's a hard worker and good teammate, he's just getting pushed around by the coaching staff right now.

#14 Phil from SATX said . . .

Is it me or do our coaches get particularly snotty about players in their "doghouse?" Lovie seems to tend to publicly diss people, or at least act snotty about them. Last year it was "Mark Bradley is our 5th receiver. Why are you asking me about him."

This year it's "Ricky Manning Jr. is our 3rd corner. So what?" I think the so what is that if a guy has been a good teammate, as PO'd says, and he's really not going to get a chance to play this year after being a coveted free agent just two years ago, the classy thing to do would be to help get him on another team where he can play. Maybe that's stupid, they've obviously paid the guy a lot of money and haven't felt they've gotten return, but what's the point of having him sitting around in camp right now?

I think Lovie is a "player's coach" as long as he likes the player. When he turns, he turns, and it seems to me, loses a little of his class along the way.

more of my two cents... Haas still looks great to me. Bowman was showing some great take aways. To me the QB race isn't that close right now, Rex is winning small hands down. Kyle is still consistently not hitting receivers in stride, they are high or low or behind, the receiver is making an adjustment at the last minute constantly, maybe not always, but you hardly see that from Rex. The best stuff you see from Kyle is when there are no defenders near the receiver and sometimes it just looks like the defense is playing way off those guys at the time.

I can't wait till they play a preseason game and actual hitting, sacks, running and tackling can take place. Then we will see the real deal. The chart on the QB's will have some real meaning.

They should publish this so called chart/graph system they have on the two QB's and sell it to fans. I'd buy it.

I still say that everybody is making way too much of the fumbled/bobbled snaps thing. It's been 7 days, they are taking snap after snap in drills that are a quick pace situation, there are no penalties, there are no time outs, there is no commercial time outs. There's no waiting for the opposing teams offense on the sidelines, it's muggy humid hot weather. It's amazing they aren't dropping the ball every other down.

Again I just think that at this stage we (or some) are making too much of it. In the preseason games I wil get concerned and only if it reslts in a turnover or loss of yardage. It seems like the hater naysayers are willing the bobbles/fumbles/drops. Something that was never looked at so closely before is now scrutinized with a fine tooth comb. It's almost the same as the throwing from the back foot attack, don't care if he throws off his back foot as long as the pass is completed. Sure we want him to maintain his mechanics and they are important, but remember when Rexy is thinking too much he messes up a lot more, when he does things naturally and relaxes he does fine. Rex is our guy. It's clear to me and I think everyone will agree when it's game time.

The whole Favre conspiracy theory is completely ridiculous. Anyone who thinks JA would go out and get Favre doesn't understand how JA runs things. I think that would be completely out of character for JA.

As far as interceptions in training camp go, obviously they will play a part in deciding who be the starter. Here's the thing though. I was listening to a chicago sports radio conversation about this yesterday. They mentioned something Rex said last year in training camp. Something along the lines of...
I might throw an interception and I know that, but this is just practice and I need to see how the safety is going to react to a certain play.
Then they asked Kyle if he thought the competition could be preventing him from trying new things. I interpreted his response as basically a veiled yes.
My point is, this is practice! Interceptions will help them learn. Just because Rex or Kyle throws a ball that is intercepted in training camp doesn't mean they would throw that same ball in a regular season game.

How about Marc Columbo? Remember him? Had his body not failed him for the Bears we might not be facing such bad O line problems these days. Now he's doing great for Dallas. What's the deal with the Bears and these kinds of issues?

Who's this NFL Network writer that suddenly comes out of the woodwork talking about, "yea I knew all along that Chris Williams had neck and back problems and that's why he dropped on the draft boards".

It's pissing me off cause all he's doing is getting further and further behind. Ok I'll be patient until the second preseason game and then I'm going to bitch and moan.

July 30, 2008

#26 shonbear said . . .

I don't think I want him, but maybe they are going to try for Chris Simms because if their thoughts are that they expect to be weak on the left side and strong on the right side with Tait there, they might want the option of a left handed QB?

I suggest listening to the podcast interview with Stieltz, Graham and Gould over at the Score. Gould gets pissed at Boers when he starts his usual chuckling about the offense and stating that he has the Bears down for 4-5 wins.

Gould asks him to explain himself (which, admittedly, isn't very hard). Its nice to hear Gould list the reasons to be optimistic.

Jerry needs to get his ass moving and sign someone and maybe multiple someones - unfortunately now he may want to look at a combo tackle/guard - bad backs and offensive linemen don't appear to be a very good combination. Wow would it ever blow if Williams had to go on IR. Jerry time to act! We never signed a guard, we're trying to promote backups, and our recent (few) draftees don't appear to be overly good. This is currently a line in complete disarray, and I'm including Olin getting back there. Do we think we can win with a line of Tait, St. Clair, Garza, Metcalf and Kreutz? No f-ing way. Maybe it's undrafted Barton to the rescue.

COME ON. NOT LOOKING GOOD!

July 30, 2008

#30 Pissed Off said . . .

Shonbear I think you might be talking about Mike Mayock. He's a great NFL mind but I dont think Williams slipped at all, he went 14th, unless he meant he slipped on other teams draft boards. All teams knew about his problems but apparently he'd never missed a practice or game his whole college career so there was no reason to worry about it.

I really would like us to get going on picking up an O-lineman, Ruben Brown or is that Bentley cat still around? I'd rather have Brown anyway, he's a pro bowl guy who was just hurt last year. Apparantly there is plenty of support for Terry Metcalf....ugh. And if for example williams goes down for the year wouldnt they put Tait back at left? Thats where he was before while St. Clair was on the pine. I think they are just using St. Clair at LT cuz they know Williams will be overtaking it anyway.

July 30, 2008

#31 Rancid said . . .

Actually Barton was the 247th pick in the draft, right before Monk. Not that that is much better than being undrafted.

July 30, 2008

#32 Phil from SATX said . . .

And that right there is precisely the use for Ricky Manning Jr. Hopefully someone who needs a corner is the same team that is heavy on linemen.

Look at that list one more time, folks. As of right now, there is a very realistic possibility of this being our starting line against none other than Indianapolis

John St. Clair Terry Metcalf Olin Kreutz Roberto Garza and John Tait.

I know I'm being redundant in repeating these names, but I'm officially sounding the alarm.

FIIIIIIIIRRRRREEEEE!

#33 jeff said . . .

phil, that's a worst case scenario.

July 30, 2008

#34 mikebdot said . . .

Phil: The sick thing is, that line is much better than last year's line. That's right, I said it. Fred Miller was THE weak link in the line. He was atrocious. When Ruben Brown finally went to IR we still went 4-4. And that was with a really really injured defense.

St. Clair isn't terrific, but John Tait is really not that much better, especially at his age.

This is a very real concern. Our O-line is still aging. I'm honestly excited about getting ANY new blood in there. I hope Barton wows everyone and wins a job somewhere. Surely Harris and other D-linemen will give the coaches input on who to start...

July 30, 2008

#35 Phil from SATX said . . .

The thing is, Jeff, it's really NOT a worst case scenario - that's why I repeated it. All it requires is Williams having a back injury, which we all know could easily happen, and Jerry not signing anyone else. It's the squad right now.

I'm not flipping out yet about Williams not being there - we still have a lot of time - but in cutting two starters while adding only one, this is the situation we're in.

Now MikeB may be right, but if he is, he is only nominally. Terry Metcalf may be better than Fred Miller but certainly not Ruben Brown. John St. Clair is OKAY, just that. And having a line only slightly better than last year when we were worst in the league - what, will that move us up 3 spots? 29th in the league or something?

Crossing my fingers on Williams, of course, but to me St. Clair has very little upside and Metcalf just shouldn't even be talked about as a starter.

I mentioned Barton as a joke. When have you heard about (virtually) undrafted rookie linemen coming in and helping a team? Our 4th round pick apparently isn't good enough to start. It ain't going to be Barton - that would be a Rudy story if it happened, and it ain't gonna.

Sign TWO Jerry, TWO. We need MORE than enough here, not less.

July 30, 2008

#36 mikebdot said . . .

This is more of an experiment than anything else, but Metcalf played fairly poorly in games 9-13 last season and thus why they started St. Clair at LG in games 14-16 (in which we went 2-1). But, the point is, we went 4-4 after Brown went down AND with Fred Miller. And a busted up D. Oh, the experiment is to see if this link shows the same picture for everyone or if it's a random pic every time: http://www.chicagobears.com/team/player60.html

If you look at the "staples" photo gallery, check out Kreutz on his knees leaving his man to be blocked by Metcalf. Hopefully Forte will be more patient than Benson. Whatever happened to "waiting for one's blockers"?

http://www.rrstar.com/sports/x1470915017/Unproven-Bears-welcome-change-opportunity-on-offense

The 2007 Bears fumbled 34 times, their second-most in 19 seasons. They threw 21 interceptions. And they committed 111 penalties to finish in the top five in the NFL for the second year in a row.

Undisciplined. 111 penalties. Pathetic. The whole offense makes mistakes. It's in the culture. Anyone want to take a guess why that might be? Ahem. Ron Turner. Ahem.

The problem is that with the NFL injuries arent "maybe" going to happen, its a certainty. Its a matter of who and when and how long. You hope its never to key players and you hope its always a short term thing. The problem here is that one O-line injury (namely Williams) will kill us and put us "on paper" bascially in the same situation as last year.....that situation being not a good O-line.

Phil, I've mentioned it before at least in passing. I was a big Bradley fan up until that point but I was annoyed by several factors of that story. First he sprained his ankle during a religious celebration at his house. WTF?? Second it wasn't a high ankle sprain so it was absurd that he was out 6 or 7 games. Mullin's responce sort of clarified it for me then at that point.
It's clear to me that he has loads of talent and has always been the best talent on the team at wr. However he has never really done it on the field, and I'm sort of tired of that now. And I've always kinda liked Lloyd when he was in other cities and he's really impressed me in all these videos. He has the best quality for me in wr; he catches the ball!!
I'm loving all the passes to Olsen, he could really step it up this year.
As far as the trib goes, Vaugh is clearly in the Orton camp. Was most of last year, and early on. In fact after Griese was bombing he was putting it forward that Orton should go ahead of Grossman at mid-season. He also made a big statement of declaring Rex would never play again. Burned there. And all off-season he's been pulling for Kyle. It's sad when you have to consider the source on something as simple as which QB completed more passes and td's, and fewer ints. I'd like to see some stats here if anyone was charting the passes....
By the way, I'm on board with Phil and others about making a move on the o-line.

Crist had a long spiel about it over at Scout.com. Basically credentialed news agencies are strictly limited to the footage they can show to about 90 seconds a day. The official site is owned by the Bears, not a news org., so they can show all they want. This guy is showing about 10 minutes a day.

I think what's going to happen is they're going to get youtube to pull the training camp footage, but he can still give his opinions all day long.

It seems pretty petty to me, but it is what it is.

The running game COULDN'T be worse than it was last year, could it?

The worst part about this offense is watching 'em leave a championship caliber defense out to dry.

Phil, to be honest there is not much JA can do for the o-line at this point. Any additional FA would not be a significant upgrade over what the Bears have on o-line now. Maybe they could pick up a guy on the PUP who could play later in the season (Bentley), but I think they're going to pin their hopes on Matt Forte and Kevin Jones to help create an effective run game this year. Not only would a running game take a lot of pressure off these QBs (imagine play action bombs downfield to Olsen and Hester) but it would go a long way in allowing the Chicago defense to recapture Super Bowl glory!

If the Bears are to make it back the the Super Bowl anytime soon, it'll be on the shoulders of a healthy, well-rested defense.

Establishing a running game would help make that happen.

ESPN reports say the Slackers offered Fahverah 20 mil over several years to stay away. Would that be like they were paying unproven Aaron Rodgers 20 mil to be their QB without a hit against their salary cap?

Wow I wish I had some hush money.

As horrid as it seems, it would be quite a coincidence that he got shut down right after we started using his stuff.

Interesting article regarding the Packers trading Favre within the NFC north.

Boooo the NFL or whoever is responsible for shutting Roy down, I can honestly say I was more aware and more excited this year than any year before and that is largely due to Roy's videos.

According to the guy on ESPN NFC North blog...
"Second-year Chicago Bears cornerback Corey Graham was getting a lot of playing time during our visit to Olivet Nazarene University last week, (which feels like last year). As David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune writes, Graham has been a training camp surprise and is in line to serve as the team's nickel back and No. 3 corner."
Everything I read this off-season talked about how good McBride was last year filling in, but apparently the Bears think differently.

Also, what the hell is the deal with Okwo and Bazuin, these guys were drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I don't expect them to be getting playing time with our solid d-line and lb corps, but you would think they would be making some noise on the 2nd team or something...

Thanks for the article Idonije, after reading that I am begging that this is complete bullshit. I dont care if he goes to the Vikes but there better be zero truth to the possibility of him coming to the Bears. Brett should not want to play here and we certainly dont want him (the hardcore fans). If Angelo ever brought him here I dont know what I'd do. I just want this shit resolved so I can put it behind me when he goes somewhere else.

Oh boy that sucks. Feels like 1984 out there. Big Brother coming down. Is it a question of the teams not wanting other teams to scout them? If so, that's legitimate. Otherwise...

Sorry, Roy. Keep the comments coming though. Maybe he can do some kind of Pump up the Volume-style video piracy - we'll all go out to a closed down drive-in movie site somewhere and watch Roy's supposedly-illegal films. Just a bunch of harmless Bear fans trying to get some freaking information about the team they care so freaking much about. That's a bad thing?

Idonije: McBride filled in nicely last year. He's still Vasher's backup. Graham had an ankle injury last season and wasn't really 100%. His progression this year isn't necessarily a surprise, especially with his (relative to other CBs on the roster) size. He also had the second most special teams tackles last season. He's slated to do line up on punts and kickoffs (both returns and coverage).

It's really good to have some depth at the position with Vasher and Tillman both missing time the past few seasons at some time or another.

I hope we can trade Manning Jr. I read something about us just outright releasing him. If we can't get at least a draft pick for him, that's pretty sad.

Okwo was a pick used in case Briggs didn't stick around. I don't have a problem with that. Bazuin was also a pick used in case Brown really wanted out. Bazuin is nursing some sort of injury already. I haven't even seen Okwo's name in anything I've read about camp. It's not as though LBs can make big hits anyway. They could make an INT I guess or a deflection, but it seems they're really pimping the CBs and safety right now. We know what we have at LB, so that sort of makes sense...

I guess Brett Favre's smarter than all of us put together. Simply by unretiring he's gotten himself a $20MM offer to re-retire.

Man that's smart. I guess I'll file that away in "the rich get richer" file.

Is it illegal to shoot the video, or just to post it on the net? Because if its about other teams watching, then it is the shooting itself that should be the problem. I don't think this is likely because the camera angle doesn't appear that the video is being sneakily recorded and also I saw no one from the Pats staff in the video. So I still think its bullshit. They're not making any money off it so we can't have it. If we want unbiased straight information we should just go to Da Site and read Mayer. I'm in a pissed mood right now because we have no videos and then I went and read the damn RT "state of the offense" bullshit article.

The worst question: "With Devin Hester’s role expanding, do you feel like a kid with a new toy when it comes to devising ways to utilize him?"

My version of RTs response: "Actually no, you see last year I had no fucking clue how to use him and screwed it up and wasted him all season. So this year, I'm going to pretend he's nothing special, we'll just use my regular shitty offense from last year and treat the most exciting player in the league like he's Muhsin fucking Muhammed. He'll probably catch some balls. Whatever, even if I'm a total piece of shit I don't get fired anyway, so it could work. Next question?"

Rancid, we get your best stuff when you're pissed. That was great.

I feel like someone who's seen the light for the first time and had then had my new eyes gouged out. There's no way I want to go back to the "fake news" again. I want the REAL STUFF. The ROY STUFF.

What if Roy could post vids on here? Is that technically possible?
