Find Your Inner Henry Burris

Monday, August 11, 2008 | Jeff

I thought about it and I got nothing...

Has there ever been a quarterback with more pressure on him in an exhibition game than Aaron Rodgers has on him tonight for the GreenBay Packers?

This isn't Young replacing Montana. (Montana was clearly on the downslope of his career.) This isn't Griese replacing Elway. (Elway retired from the game and stayed out.) No, this is a player who - fair or not - will be looked at by history as the man who pushed Brett Favre out of Green Bay and into North Jersey. This is a player whose statistics in a Family Night scrimmage were scrutinized on NFL Live. This is a player not only replacing the individual emblematic of a franchise renaissance (though incorrectly credited for it) but also replacing a man whose level of media worship is comparable only to Tibetan people's for the Dalai Lama.

That's what makes tonight so much fun for a Chicago Bears fan. If there is a football God, tonight begins what should be a decades long quest for the Packers to find their next guy. Tonight starts the string of Rick Mirers and Kordell Stewarts and Craig Krenzels and Cade...woops, almost said his name. Tonight the Packers follow Moses into the arid wasteland of bad quarterback hell only to find nothing on the other end of the parted sea. And you know what? Good. You deserve it. You've had fun for too long. I'll have my television on tonight and Aaron Rodgers you better not let me down. I want a disaster. I want the Hindenburg. I want the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel headline, "What Did We Do?"

And just for good measure, I wouldn't mind an out for 4-6 weeks either. "No, Jeff, you can't root for injury." "Damn it, Jeff, we don't want anybody hurt!" I do. For Jim Miller and that prick Hugh Douglas. For Rex Grossman's preseason crack on the night I opened my first play - receiving a call from the Reverend in the dead drunkenness of a beautiful night. For Mike Brown goddamnit. Mike Brown.

Good luck, Aaron.

Boldest DD prediction yet:

Rodgers throws 3 picks, and Jennings and Grant were flukes. The Green Bay Packers will get schalacked at home vs. Minnesota week one, and the fans will go berserk. This will be a direct result of the "Brett Favre-seed-of-doubt" catalyst, and will subsequently incur the full-on implosion of at least the first half of their season (all the while the Jets start racking up wins through their SUPER EASY schedule. Have you seen it?!?!), will not fully recover, and therefore finish LAST in the NFC North division! How do ya like them apples?!?!

Jeff, right on with joniak noticing that catch call, but did u? or anyone else?

Animal, HOW BOUT OUR BOY ZIBS?!?! That shit was brutal!

If Rodgers gets hurt tonight, the Pack is done. Think of it this way, they had an out with a guy who already knew the offense....IF HE JUST WOULD HAVE STAYED RETIRED!!!!! Favra could have stayed put in Mississippi and the let phone start ringing....insteadhe's in Jersey with 3 years to go on the current contract. HE HE

Beautifully said. The night an era dies for good. Let's see how Rodgers does with his home crowd booing him.

Well, I'm back for another season of hand wringing. A couple of comments based on prior posts:

Tailgating is still allowed; the restriction now is that you can't tailgame after kickoff; it can resume when the game is over. Actually, fans without tickets can't tailgate during those times; I guess if you have a ticket but dont' feel like going in you can keep on grilling.

Are we really going to spend 16+ weeks talking about Orton vs Rex? We don't have a good enough QB - period. IF after all this time the best thing that can be said is "he did some good things out there" then we're damning with faint praise. Nobody ever says stuff like that about a good QB.

But that's OK - the window is closed. Williams may have been a mistake, but now that he's hurt let's keep him out all year.

And yes, I think we all are hoping for GB to feel our QB pain for the next 10 years or so. But let's say Rodgers is OK? What does that mean? My theory is that there are very few good QBs - certainly fewer than 32; maybe no more than 16. But if GB gets two in a row, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe is a combination of bad scouting and bad coaching that put us in this hell - not bad luck as we all seem to be saying.

It's probably a combination of both, which JA should take the blame for because ultimately it's his responsibility as GM to hire coaches and players. Believe me, there is PLENTY of blame to go around for this one, it's hard to pin it on one guy... whether that guy be JA, Lovie, Rex, Ronald, Scouting dept., Bradley, F. Miller or Adam Arch Deluxe... I'll make this easy and blame Virginia. JK baby, you know I love you.

As far as the Packers are concerned, you'd think they really have faith in these kids Brohm and Flynn by just letting Favre go - unless they thought he was for sure washed up. Anyway, it'll be interesting to watch these young QBs work tonight. To be honest, before this year's draft I had hoped the Bears would target a QB like those two. At some point this org. has to come to grips with the realization it has NO idea how to draft offense, and figure out a way to get lucky. Take a few more cuts! Get the bat off your shoulder and keep swinging! I mean, it's only the most important position on the team...

fuck. they'll get lucky one of these days, right? They have to.

But Bills right by the way, it's pathetic to argue over Orton and Grossman again. If we see another year of the Ortman Show (you know what I mean, a repeat of '07) it's probably going to mark the official beginning of the end for JA. Somebody needs to hero up this year for Jerry to survive.

I didn't see the game but it doesn't surprise me Bengals were bad...I think they need a newe coach.

From highlights it looks like Rogers isn't half bad, and I didn't think he looked bad when he came in vs Dallas last year. We will see how he does when coaches get a chance to gameplan against him. I should hate him for the fact he is on the Packers, but for some reason I am pulling for this guy...as long as we stay above them in the division. I always thought Favre had a good attitude...I was wrong.

Just watched Roy's latest video from Day 20 training camp and it sounds like Rex had another real good day. Making that 2 days in a row he has outperformed Kyle. Roy still is under the opinion that Kyle will be named the starter how is that possible. I think with a good showing against Seattle, Rex can take off with the number 1 job.

Only watched the 1st half of GB/CINCY which gives me rube cred anyways (Al you might know that one if you listen to KFAN) but nothing was overly impressive from either team. GB does not scare me based on what I saw. The only impressive thing I saw was the 1st two TDs being scored by guys without helmets.

I'm off to listen to Roy

Homeboy Roy says Rex has earned the starting job, and he's providing unbiased fan info for us. Unless something goes aray (sp) such as Kyle with a stellar performance in Seattle and Rex not so much, there is no reason Rex will not be our #1. He does mention that he thinks Kyle will be named the starter though anyway, he said he would explain that in another video but I assume it has something to do with what Al was talking about in a previous post regarding that Hub guy leaking info that its Kyles job on "the score". Of course I'm going to be pissed if Kyle wins the job (cuz I know Rex's upside, better chance to win, etc.) but I'll be even more pissed if its obvious Rex won the competition and Kyle gets it. The fans who have paid attention to camp, etc should be pissed too but I suppose Lovie and Co. can just put a blanket over our heads assuming no one knows how to evaluate talent and use that for reasoning to pick Kyle.

On another note the O-line looked real bad, the D was in on Rex how many times for "sacks" and how many more weren't
shown? I wish they'd move Tait back to left already. Looks like we're pretty much going with the same O-line we had last year....yipee.

Its nice not be concerned with the D. Everyones still healthy, DD is back again. Its all good.

Was at the Packers preseason game (there rerally is nothing else to do in Green Bay).

Rogers looked alright but both defenses had trouble wrapping players up for tackling....its like they're new to the game or something.

I loved Brian Brohm's NFL debut of a pass RIGHT TO THE BENGAL...and Flynn's first play was a sack as well. When Rogers goes down (Early) they have nobody that has even been in the league to throw the ball.

its odd to think that GB has put themselves in a more precarious position tha us in terms of the QB. If Rogers goes down they've got two rookies.

Ugh. Anybody know of any bars in Paris that'll be showing the preseason games?

Didn't see the game but read that AR's pick was a deflection. Also, his stats looked good. Be honest, if Rex or Neck Beard had those stats we'd be excited.

OK - let's look on the bright side of this. I think the Williams pick will be the beginning of the end for JA. Let's say Rodgers does OK. That coudl be the last straw in that fans will say WTF Jerry, picking a QB really ISN'T as hard as you make it look.

I predict a lot of traffic for whatever Fire Jerry Angelo website takes hold this year.

Roy's video's are awesome! The D looked really good in camp yesterday. I do have a serious problem with Roys opinion that Rex has clearly out preformed Orton in camp, but will probably NOT be named starting QB. WTF, why even have a competition then?? If the coaching staff was going to name orton the starter either way, why not just let him play with the 1's from the get go, so he could at least be comfortable.

To quote office space: 'heads up their asses'

I hear ya Jimbo, why the hell would the re-sign the guy and pay him that money if they werent going to let him compete? It makes no sense.

Phil, is that you, the SATX Phil? Yes Favre is J>E>T officially. I didnt know Mike Brown was hurt, are your sources in Paris better than ours locally???

No - I think that's Phillip in NYC although usually you're either a Phillip or Phil but not both. So maybe Phillip in NYC can clue us in. I've never been to France.

Do you remember this joke about France from a few years ago?

Seen on French Ebay:

Military rifle for sale, dropped once, never fired.

(or something like that)

Hopefully Phil in France is only assuming Mike Brown is hurt - I haven't heard anything. When's the next game and do we assume Rex is the starter?

sorry about the confusion. I'm typing this stuff on my iPhone and it was a lot easier to type "phil" instead of "phillip".

SATX, told the rifle joke to the fiancée, and while I found it quite humorous, she didn't seem to get the joke.

Mike Brown injury stuff is not anythig I've heard, I guess I just misread something from Jeff's post - when I see "walked off the field under his own power" I think, why did he walk off? Hence my concern about injuries. No worries then, I guess.

Because every night the whole city heard them and surrendered.
