If Brett Favre ends up being traded to the Tampa Bay Bucs, Jeff Garcia is not going to be happy moving down Jon Gruden's depth chart. Good quarterbacks know they only have so many good years in the league and Garcia - a player I had little respect for pre-Tampa - will fight his way out if only to give himself a chance to start ANYWHERE. Yes the Bucs may look to keep him and deal Chris Simms but I think this will have much more to do with an aging player looking for a place to play.
What is Garcia? A player who'll be able to weasel out of situations created by a shaky offensive line with his ability to scramble and throw on the run. A player who'll lead from the huddle. A player who might not be able to capitalize and the Devin Hester sprint speed but certainly will throw the ball to the other team at a lesser percentage than our current options. A winner.
He won in San Francisco. He won in Philadelphia. He won in Tampa Bay. The defense he'll be acquiring in Chicago will be the best he's ever had.
He'll win here too.
#2 Duff Diggler said . . .I agree. He'd be a nice stop-gap for our quarterback of the future who has yet to be identified. However, not unlike the Packers, when addressing the quarterback issue, I believe the Bears are more likely to stick to their word, that is "Rex/Kyle is our quarterback," than to go out and get another veteran.

I liked him a lot, all the qualities Jeff mentioned. I dont think now that he's as talented as say....Rex...but he's just a gamer and a fighter and most importantly a winner. But not here. I dont want him anymore. We have our QB(s) in Rex (and Kyle) and at least for this season I want to leave it alone. Would I take Garcia over neckbeard, in a heartbeat and I'd be all for it if Kyle was named our starter today but I want to see Rex again, playing consistent, playing well and with the fire he played with after his benching last year.

I think Rex no doubt has the ability to be a winner. Whether he does it or not is a different story. I say give him this last shot of his and let's hope he pulls through for the sake of his career with our team, and our team in general

Not really opposed to Garcia, but at veteran minimum as a back up to Kyle/Rex. Isn't he almost as old as Farve?

If the Bucs get Favre, they have what, 6 QB's? Why trade? Eventually they'll have to cut 3 of them. Take your pick and you don't give up depth on D.

#17 Jimbo said . . .Jeff Garcia would be great for the Bears. As mentioned, he won in San Fran, he won in Philly, and he won in TB. He's led two different teams in two different divisions to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Screw the slanted analysts - those anal pundits, Da Bears are nt in the same boat as the Falcons, the Chiefs, and the Dolphins. Da Bears could be a 10-6 team with Rexorton. Da Bears are a 10-6 team with Jeff Garcia. Plus, Garcia could retire with Da Bears and give us a few years to find "the quarterback." This guy can win, and looking at last year, 10-6 will get you to The Dance in the NFC. Let us all pray, if you don'y believe hope, or wish, that Brett Farve wears that putrid pewter this season, and Jeff Garcia wears the navy, and orange.

#18 David Haugh said . . .#16. I think this bears team can win 10 games as currently constructed. I really believe the difference between us making a run at the division and sucking will be the O-line. Right now that line looks pretty F'ed up, but there is a month to go before week 1. If Williams can get over his pussyitus it would go a long way to helping.
IF... (1) the O-line is average to above average and (2) or defense stays healthy... i think we will get a minimum of 4-5 division game wins, and we should own the falcons, titans, rams, and texans. If we can split Indy, Jacksonville, NO, Philly, Carolina, and Tampa Bay... 10-6 or 11-5 is a reasonable expectation i think.

#19 Al In WI said . . .Will this be the day Brett Favre officially becomes an ex-Packer? The story of the NFL off-season has potential implications all across the league, especially here in Chicago. Here are four:
1) If the trade goes through and the Packers indeed deal Favre to the Buccaneers, Tampa Bay most likely will have to unload a quarterback. It's unfathomable that a team can keep six quarterbacks on an 80-man training-camp roster and still prepare adequately for the season. That increases the likelihood of Chris Simms getting either shipped or released, and the Bears are monitoring the situation. They always could return the sixth-round draft choice they received from the Bucs for Brian Griese or be ready to pounce if and when Simms hits waivers. He is entering the final year of a contract and the Bears likely would have to pledge to redo his deal, but it would be worth it to get a still-young quarterback in the organization that would make everybody feel better about the position.
2) Also, if Favre joins the Bucs, the Bears' Sept. 21 home opener becomes one of the hottest Soldier Field tickets of the season instead of just a compelling matchup against an NFC South contender. Three games into the season, Favre would know the Bucs offense well enough to make him dangerous at a venue he historically has dominated. The Bears beat Favre twice last year and nothing would boost their early season more than beating him again if he's indeed wearing the pewter on the visiting sideline.
3) If a surprise occurs and the Jets get Favre, then what happens to Chad Pennington? Would they keep Pennington to hold a clipboard and potentially provide a distraction or trade or cut him to start anew with Favre? Face it, if you're the Bears, you would have to kick the tires on Pennington if he were to hit the market. He's a veteran known more for his accuracy than his arm strength, but the combination of his intangibles and experience would make it necessary for the Bears to consider him as a third quarterback -- if Favre becomes a Jet.
4) The overlooked benefit to all of this from the Bears' perspective is how the Favre saga threatens to sabotage the season for the Packers, who still have a pretty good football team. But when Favre left Lambeau Field on Tuesday, if possible, more pressure was placed on Aaron Rodgers and the chemistry of the locker room hung in the balance. Maybe the Packers veterans had grown as weary of Favre as the front office, but more likely players are taking a wait-and-see approach until Rodgers gets more experience. If Favre flops and Rodgers justifies the faith in him, it's a moot point. But if Favre still plays close to the quarterback he was last year, the first time Rodgers struggles, doubt could creep up in the minds of Packers players who respected Favre as much as fans revered him. Given that, it's hard to look at the Packers without Brett Favre and see a model of stability. Without him, they're clearly weaker and that's relevant for the Bears.

#20 Idonije said . . .As mentioned in the Haugh piece the Bears are going to get an ex-Buc at quarterback but it'll be Chris Simms. He makes more sense for the Bears at this point.
After all if you're not interested in Favre why the hell would you want Garcia?? Favre still has an arm and is 10x's better a player then Garcia ever has been. They just won't do it, so at this point it's almost pointless to hope for it if you were so inclined.
They have pointedly avoided making the big move at any position this off season for whatever reason. This is going to be the year the gamble on Jerry's draft picks pure and simple.
Adding Garcia does not make the Bears the favorite in the division by any means. The guy had 13 td's last season. Great post by Jimbo, dead on my friend.
Lastly, Garcia is a system quarterback, and that system is the west coast offense. We do not run that version here. And the only time he's been in a different system he stunk in Cleveland.August 7, 2008
#21 jeff said . . .Does it not bother anyone else that Lovie says there is "no real reason" to why Orton gets the start for the first preseason game? Why is there no real reason? Why the hell wouldn't you let the guy who has played better so far in training camp get the first start and make that fact known? Why not use that as motivation for the other guy, be it Kyle or Rex? Why not let whoever earned the nod take the confidence boost? I am so tired of sub-par quarterbacks that we have to baby...

#22 Devin Hester the Defense Molester said . . .can't say i agree with that. don't want a favre type because favre makes too many mistakes and COSTS you games. don't you think there's a reason they don't want him to play over aaron rodgers?
garcia was bad in cleveland. take a look back at that team. yeah, montana would have sucked there.
as for the system quarterback, don't believe in it. favre has only played in west coast offenses, is he a west coast quarterback? and nobody can even define the damn west coast offense anymore. he can throw the ball to his team more than the other team. i'd take that.

#23 The Knight of Ownage said . . .I still want LeCharles Bentley! Come on, the Bears need depth at lg and the boy has played it before in the past. He just came off injury but that just means that they should be able to get him cheaper AND he might return to prow bowl form. Getting Bentley means they could have Williams, Bentley guarding the blind Olin in the middle and Tait, Garza on the right, or Tait, St. Clair I prefer St. Clair. Which ever qb they choose might actually have an average of 3 or 4 seconds to throw the ball then.

* Tony Romo Regrets Eating Greasy Fried Chicken During Crucial Field-Goal Attempt January 11, 2007BOURBONNAIS, IL—The Chicago Bears put on a display of inaccurate passing, sluggish route running, and careless ball-handling Wednesday as the team exhibited their new-look-like-shit offense to fans and media attending training camp to view a full-squad practice. "We finally have the personnel to implement a game plan of high-percentage incomplete passes, completed passes of four yards or less, and a rushing attack that lets us lose control of the game clock with complex plays that take forever to develop and generate negative yardage," offensive coordinator Ron Turner said, explaining why the Bears abandoned the "West-Coast-My-Fat-Ass" offense they ran last year. "I'm confident that both Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton possess the ability to overthrow a receiver on a deep fly pattern or find an open defender and deliver the ball with laser-like precision, so we'll be switching between them often and at random intervals to avoid either one getting into a rhythm or developing any confidence." According to Turner, the offense is starting to malfunction as a cohesive unit and has shown much more consistency at blowing assignments, missing blocks, and fumbling snaps.

#25 jeff said . . .Apparently there is a lot of demand for the services of LeCharles (at least according to his agent anyway) so the price tag might be a little steep for the Bears, but I wouldn't mind the move at all. In fact, it's no secret how awful this offensive line looks right now. But the Bears need the someone to replace Reuben on the left side yesterday and Bentley isn't expected to play until the 2nd half of the season because of his injuries. Slim pickens out there for lineman looking for work right now, at least until teams stop carrying 80 man rosters and some guys are let go...
To echo Al, if you're not interested in Favre why WOULD you want Garcia? That logic just doesn't make sense to me.
And yes, it does bother me Izzy. Your head coach is telling you he's making decisions with absolutely no reasoning behind it. I call BULLSHIT on you Lovie, tell me the real reason! At least I hope you're bullshitting me, you can't be serious can you? ACTING like you have no idea how to handle this QB situation is one thing, but ACTUALLY having no idea how to is another. It's embarrassing man, c'mon.

Listening to the Score last night and all those guys are thinking the Line problems and lack of a decent depth chart at receiver and QB is laughable. They think the Bears offense is going to look like ridiculous clowns.
If this really comes to pass and we don't get our act together to smooth out our offensive line and lock into our expected starters by game two or three of the preason, I'm thinking that our offense will have coined a new nickname as "Jerry's Kids."
On the other hand if the Bears do come through on this with like the most unanswered question marks EVER going into a season and they do well, it will be awesome to hear all the pundicks eat their words.
I just know we have the talent there (except the O line). Our Coaches need to just lock it down. These guys need to get some time together as the real 1's and 2's etc...

YES!!! There is a God! And he did not allow Favre to play for Da Bears. More importantly, now the weak ones on here can finally take their heads out of their collective asses and stop pining for this asshole to lead our team!
