No, not Kyle Orton’s first half, looks-like-an-actual-quarterback touchdown tosses. Not Lance Briggs whacking every Eagle in sight with the force of a medieval battering ram. Not even Alex Brown pulling Correll Buckhalter to the ground like a rodeo wrangler in the best moment by a singular Bears defensive player since Brian Urlacher stripped Edgerrin James on a fateful Arizona Monday evening two years ago.
3rd down and 4. Bears on their own 6 yard-line. 2:43 showing on the game clock.
NBC cuts to Brian Urlacher on the sideline. The look is nervous. You can read his mind through his anxious eyes. Does the defense have one more stop in them? Can they keep the quick-strike Eagles out of the end-zone again? Again? Does any defense have that much heart?
Kyle Orton takes the snap from center and puts the ball in Matt Forte’s hands.
After a poor game up front, Olin Kreutz drives the linebacker an easy five yards off the line of scrimmage. Roberto Garza steamrolls Omar Gaither. The hole is there until John Tait gets plowed, literally driven the ground by Dan Klecko. Brian Dawkins is riding Klecko like a steed. Eagle arms reaching in from everywhere.
Urlacher must be buckling his chin strap.
Two men hit Forte, well short of the first down. He couldn’t care less. Mariano Rivera has been closing games like this in the Bronx for an awful long time. Sometimes you just have to want a first down. Sometimes being tackled isn’t an option. First down. First down Bears.
Rash and G-Reg lift Forte to his feet. He flips the ball to the referee and walks back to the huddle. That’s who Matt Forte is. He doesn’t need to let the defense know what he's done. He’ll let the crowd do that. When you’re sitting in Yankee Stadium and those first powerful guitar chords of Enter Sandman fill the cathedral, you can almost hear 56,000 people whisper at once: “Game.” That’s who Matt Forte is. Game.
NBC cuts back to Urlacher. The look is everything. There’s almost tears in his eyes. Its fun to see athletes, even great athletes like #54, exude that much pride. Urlacher might not be the best player on the unit. He might not even be the best player on the linebacking corps. But that's still his defense. This is still his team. He began walking the sideline and mouthing something I couldn't pick-up, even in slow motion. "Great to have a running back" maybe? "About goddamn time"? It was probably something a lot simpler.

This was the best Defense I have seen out of the Bears in a long while, I hope it carries over to next week....

Momentum.
If that game doesn't awaken something in you as a player that this team can hang with anyone and can be special then I don't know what will.
Stay with our strengths and keep working on limiting our weaknesses and the sky (or hopefully winning the SB) is the limit.

I am freaking flying high - literally had about 16 hours of sleep total over the last 4 nights, at Ground Zero (Chitown baby!) for my 30th high school reunion - what a blast! While I sorely needed sleep last night, very little was found because I was a witness (through my TV screen, unfortunately) to a TRULY GREAT GAME of football. MUST WATCH TV.
Global, I envy you, my friend - what it would have been like to be there - our best game to be at since the NFC Championship way back in early 2007 - congrats! What was it like to be there for the 4th and nothing play? The white noise wall of sound, I'm sure - hair standing on end.
I loved the D getting the Horse Trailer wall - and they deserved it for more than just the goal line stand, too - for their 60 minutes of supreme effort in this game. No Tommie either - and none needed, apparently. As mentioned by others, stout work on the inside by three very capable players in DD, the great Izzy, and the glad-Jerry-drafted-him Marcus.
Briggs, Briggs, Briggs... I Love You Man! That was one of the first prime time interviews I remembered him giving, and he was great! I used to wonder if he could even talk, he was so quiet. And I want to give some credit to Ur, while seems pretty evident to me that he is now beginning his inevitable decline, even a something less than 100% of his prime Brian Urlacher is one helluva linebacker. How about the sight of those guys bristling with the pre-snap energy before that 4th and 1 play? You could practically hear the hum of their engines over the crowd noise.
But the game wasn't over, was it? We needed a first down, even if I believe that D was ready to stop their charge 5 times over if necessary - they were that motivated. But the Bears AS A TEAM needed the offense to be a part of such a special spectacular game, and not just in the first half, either. The O in the second wasn't much to behold, that's for sure, but the 3 points were critical, and then there was...
MATT FORTE TO THE RESCUE. 3rd and 4. Everyone knowing the play was a running play. Matt finds a pretty darn big hole (for that game, anyway), slashes through it, finds himself face to face with a linebacker, does his soon-t0-be-patented Forte Shoulder Shimmy, beats that linebacker BAD and rattles off another 7 or so -
FIRST DOWN!
Does Forte do an imitation of Usain Bolt after that critical play? NO!
Does he at least make a Moose-like First Down! signal? NOOOO!!!
Does he even pump a little fist (certainly excusable given the circumstances) ? HELL NO!!!
No, Mr. Forte hands the ball to the ref, adjusts his helmet and shoulder pads, and runs back to the huddle - dude's got more work to do, doesn't he?

And how about a salute to our quarterback, Kyle Orton. He's no kid, he's a man. Not the most experienced NFL quarterback, but one who is showing that he is a quick study. Inexperience showed in the second half, but we should all know by now that the difference between him and Rex is how he reacts after mistakes - great point by Mikeb about his similarity with Griese in this. Only one superbad play (pick in endzone) - the rest was more done by the intense rush. He's getting better in the audibling, none better than the 3rd and 7 audible to Forte which picked up 17 and kept the drive alive, ultimately resulting in the winning 3 points.
Even RT was pretty good in this game - not great, but pretty darn good - he's improving, and learning better how to use these players.
Hat's off to you Kyle - 3 touchdowns in the first half, a beautiful thing, and all earned by VERY nice passes, especially the last Hester one. [Sidebar - take my little popup Bear Fan quiz - it goes like this - are you talking about Rex after this game and dogging Kyle? If you are, you're a Rex fan first and a Bear fan last.]
Kyle has upside, folks, he really does - he's showing it to us. He's improving. Now he needs to win two games in a row, which HE WILL. Kyle, thanks for proving me wrong - keep-a-going, boy!
Only downside of game to me (aside from potential injuries) was my realization that our tight ends are not as good as I thought they were. Des Clark has apparently aged and has trouble getting open, Greg Olsen will apparently NEVER have any yards after catch, so the combo is a significant worse from where I thought we were. On the other hand, O-line is better than I thought, Forte is way better than I even hoped, and Lloyd is also way better, so we can adjust to that. I'd like to see K. Davis hit the field - can he block?

Great to see that kind of all around effort by the entire Bears team. Having to bear another agonizing 4th qtr. meltdown would have shot dead the season's morale.
It's important the Bears don't have a let down next week. Fucking Detroit SWEPT the Bears last season, don't forget, and it's time for sweet sweet revenge. Kyle Orton and his offense need to continue to get better each week, and play with more consistency. The errors in last night's game were not pretty, and almost put too much strain on the defense late in the game. Fortunately Matty came through in the clutch on 3rd down as you mentioned.
Winning 2 in a row was a big struggle last year, and a victory against a division opponent would be a great way to follow up Sunday night's big win. The Bears need to shake the urge to relax this week and get right back to work and have a solid week of practice. Matt Forte and ex-kitty Kevin Jones should get plenty of opportunities on the ground against a pretty shitty Detroit run defense. If the Bears defense can avoid a let down on Sunday, the team should be in good shape to go 3-2. Bear down America.

Offsides, false starts, blocks in the back, personal fouls - all gone. 60 minutes of passion - all there.
Kudos Lovie. Now get em to do it again. Avenge 2007. The kittycat hunt has begun.

It was going to be a tough night for him to run, but even though he didnt have a flash night, he did all the little things right. When they finally threw the screens to him he gained 9+ yards every time. He gained that KEY 1st down we all know about. Forte also did a great job in pass protection, which is said to be his weakness out of college. I thought he did a great job blocking. BUT, the play that said the MOST about him to me was when Orton was sacked and fumbled at the Bears 30ish yard line. Gather picked up the fumble and made his move to turn that into a TD, but who CHASED him down and tackled him at the 28? FORTE. Huge tackle because the Eagles ended up only getting a FG off that turnover.
I love the kid and its scary to think he will only get better.

You make a good point on the touchdown route thrown to Olsen. He did have YAC on that one, and that one also looked like a route where he has the most competitive advantage - and it also happens to have the biggest payout. Need to do that WAY more. I think it's coming. That said, Olsen has shown that he's easily brought down.
About RT - if you look at these games, while he has been far from flawless (and all OC's are in every game) we are seeing much more from him and his playbook this year than last. I'm sure that if he read this, he would say "duh, look at what I have to work with compared with last year." I don't give him anywhere close to that pass, and I still think that he's clearly in the bottom half of OC's, probably bottom 5. So believing that, with a good replacement selection we'd clearly be improving our team.
But he may be good enough to help us to win ballgames, so I'll give him that. Want to see him continuing to improve, along with everyone else. I like to give credit where credit's due, even when the unfolding evidence is running counter to what I previously believed. (I'm good that way!) (that's a joke). Same goes on Orton. I'm really getting excited about him. I'll lose that excitement quickly if he screws things up badly and goes backwards - but he's not showing me anything to suggest that he's going to do that - in fact he's showing me the opposite. THAT'S his upside.
And you have to remember these four games have been against four really good D's. Am I wrong in thinking Gaither is a better lineman than any single one we have, including Tommie?
Detroit represents a real opportunity to show what can be done against below-average talent. If the Bears want to be great this year, they have to start mopping up against bad teams. Detroit is a BAD TEAM. As the league has already shown in this short season, that doesn't mean they can't beat us - they can.
BUT NOT IF WE BRING THE SAME EFFORT AND DISCIPLINE TO THIS GAME AS WE DID TO THE EAGLES.

As someone else noted, you are a Rex fan first and a Bears fan never if that is what is on your mind at this point in the season. Kyle is only going to continue to improve and learn from his mistakes. Unlike another QB on this team who had ample opportunity to prove himself, Orton doesn't seem to let one mistake ruin an entire game performance. He gets up, brushes himself off, and starts all over again the next time he hits the field. I hope I never have to see Grossman line up under center for the Chicago Bears ever again.

In reality holding could be called on every play, illegal contact on most, and personal fouls on nearly every pile removal or loose ball scrum. I was glad to see that both teams played with a lot of intensity but at the same time they were disciplined; and as a reward the refs let them play.
Now that being said there is some merit to us barely winning, I don't think it is squarely on any one Bears but we still had a lot of missed opportunities and turnovers, luckily they did too.
1.) Drops - this kills even the best teams, gotta get rid of em, Skunk, I know the ball isn't coming down at you but if it hits you in the hands; you catch it.
2.) Turnovers - Yes our D is good and will prolly get alot but it is much easier to control our Offenses lack of turnovers; KO put that bad throw in your pocket or better yet try to hit RT.
3.) Protection - wheter it is getting the run going sooner, screening them out of blitzes, calling max protection, or just plain blocking your guy another second or so; KO needs more time, he is really starting to prove that given time and opportunity he can really deliver. That first game I felt like the Oline played their guts out, they had a chip on their shoulder, they had something to prove; I haven't seen that fire since not even from Kreutz.September 30, 2008

jeff - this stuff is poetry man. If folks are truly aware of this blog as you say they are I feel we will surely lose you at some point. You should be getting paid for this stuff. What makes it great is that when I am done reading it I am stoked about the Bears. For too many writers its obviously about finding something unique to show off how great a writer they are. Your post was about putting into words a moment in time in a game and giving the reader the shot to relive that moment.
My imperssions of the game are euphoric. It took me a bit to think about it all.
1. KO can make the throws. Those TD masses were longer and they were dead on. I'm not saying he's doing it consistently yet, I'm saying he can make those throws. Those were pretty.
2. This Defense is what makes Da Bears Da Bears. Those hits are what makes Da Bears Da Bears. It was good to see us lose Tommie and not miss a beat, it was good to see Mike Brown hit someone. It was good to Briggs punish someone. It was good to see a four down goal line stand.
3. An offensive player will never be my favorite Bear. I'm a defense guy, but Forte is unbelieveable. He didn't have the greatest game. Check the stats. But he was and is what this team needs. I'm glad we drafted CB, I'm glad we traded TJ for Dan Bazuin. If we hadn't, this guy would be wearing a different jersey. This guy is a true warrior. On a team where the warriors usually play on the other side of the ball, it's nice to have one in the backfield.
In a side note concerning Phils question of my whereabouts, I am torn about this blog. Quality sports blogs can make for troublesome mistresses. When a blog is this good, it gets popular. I've been in here a couple years and this thing has boomed. That's awesome. But popularity attracts morons. When I watch a game like Sundays, I want to celebrate with other real fans, ones with passion and a modicum of intelligence. I don't really want to go sift through 25 posts about clocksuckers, twats, and opionions as which of us posters is sucking which players dick. I know, I know, it's a blog, and a key part of a blog is that everyone can come and everyone can say anything they want. I know, if I don't like it I can leave. I'm not saying to restict or start censoring everyone, I'm just not sure it's my style.

If the Bears are to succeed as a team then throwing another less experienced QB into the mix or replacing Orton with Rex who showed even more inconsistency is not the solution.
As long as Orton is showing progression and finding ways to move the ball then give him some time. His down the field throws have improved, his audibles in key situations have improved, he handled an excellent pass rush and make some great decisions against Philly. He will make mistakes but the important thing is that it seems like he is learning from them. As a Bears fan we have lived with this problem FOREVER, so give the guys some time and let him play the position and for Christs sake stop bitching about everything even when they win the game.

#54 Game Managers Win Championships said . . .I told my buddy I had a premonition that the Bears would surprise everybody against the Eagles and win and then have a let down game against the Lions. I pray that does not happen. But, I am worried that Peanut will not be able to play, and we will have 2 short corners (Vasher and Graham) going against the tall and physical Williams and Johnson tandem. If they can win two in a row, then I will be really excited. The main thing is building some momentum week to week. Forte should have another 100+ game since Detroit's run D is horrible. But then came an atrocious 2nd half. He completed only 3 passes the entire half, the team failed to move the ball at all, and to top if off he added to his game total of 4 turnovers. That's unacceptable.
He's shown some things to be midly excited about the past two games, and I fully conceed that there has been improvement in his game. But there's still a long ways to go. So to paraphrase Parcells I'd put away the anointing oil for a little bit longer. At least until he proves he can play like that for a full game. That's his next challenge.September 30, 2008

I didn't appreciate any of the Roy blog proselytizing on here - Roy was great when he was bringing us video and info from training camp, but that doesn't mean I want to run over to his blog. There's enough over here for me, and it's led by the Bears' greatest journalist, chronicler and critic. Jeff is the freaking Mike Royko of Bears columnists, and I am not levying that statement lightly.
To me, this thing is the gold standard. The Only Blog That Matters.
I really don't think we're going to have to worry about a letdown this week, so Crown, I hope your premonition was heavily influenced by past history rather than metaphysics. The Bears have played four very difficult teams, right out of the gate, with a BUNCH of new starters on offense. (seriously! QB RB RT LT LG WR WR - isn't that 8 out of 11?) Pretty amazing that they were in all four games and won two.
I think they will use this game, not to take a break, but to flex their muscles as a strong favorite and really put a beatdown on the Lions. Psychologically, they're ready for this and the Lions are not.
Lots of anecdotal national buzz about that game (people in Texas talking about it, for example). Just like the Cowboys/Eagles game, that game was great for the NFL. Common denominator of course was the presence of the Eagles, who are a very strong and likable team right now. Somebody hear hates McNabb and Reid, I'm sure they have their reasons, but to me those guys are likable.
