But I told you so.
I told Rick Telander. I told Steve Rosenbloom. I told David Haugh. Many times. While the rest of the sports media jumps on the Bears bandwagon today, remember who's been driving all along.
There was so much to like in last night's triumph at the oddly named Lucas Oil Stadium. The Chicago Bears of 2008 looked like the Chicago Bears of 2006 - suffocating on defense and efficient on offense. They ran the ball at will and made every play they needed to in the passing game. They hit people - oh boy did they hit people - and they fed off the fire of #30. They were good, damn it. Real good.
Here's what I really liked:
1. Matt Forte. I've only owned four Bears jerseys in my life: McMahon, Waddle, Zorich, Urlacher. I'm about to add a fifth. Why? "I'm glad we won, but I'm not going to go crazy over it."
2. Dusty Dvoracek. The stats may not show it but every time I looked up, Dusty D was in the Colts backfield. I'm getting a sense that this injury might have been severely underrated last season.
3. How about that defensive line?
4. How about Ron Turner? Did he make a bad call all night long? On the same note, did Bob Babich?
5. Anybody who criticizes anything The Skunk does should be shot. So he took the ball out of the endzone. What, you only like it when he scores?
6. Kyle Orton threw zero interceptions. Bears have zero losses.
7. John St. Clair was abused by Dwight Freeney all night long but he played his heart out. I was really impressed.
I'm going to watch the game with a cup of coffee in a few minutes and will probably have something more substantial this afternoon.
Bear down.
#2 Duff Diggler said . . .That game was great, I am not sure there could have been a much better outcome. A bit of breath holding early with Briggs limping, and after that Sanders shot on Forte...then they were back. Orton threw some pretty balls and some ugly balls, to be expected...but like you said, no picks, big win...bear down.

Imagine the blow out this game would have been if we would have gotten those two horrible calls!
1. The colts kick return fumble that wolfe recovered.
2. The reggie wayne fumble, after he clearly made a football move.

#6 Albert In Tucson said . . .Wow. Matt Forte impressed me with his ability to pick up the first down in short yardage situations. Whether is was catching the ball out of the backfield or squeezing through a small hole to get 2-3 yards. I don't recall a negative yard rush all game.
It was also really good to see Peanut play well. He was missing all preseason and he is so important to our defense. Can't wait for Carolina next weekend. I look for improvement out of the receiving core next week.

#7 Phil from SATX said . . .OK, Jeff, I'll say; Jeff told us so! Oh...MY...GAWD! Alright, who are you guys and what did you do with the Chicago Bears we watched in pre-season? Nevermind, you guys can stay. Matt Forte: He runs, he catches, he BLOCKS! Matt Forte, your table is ready. Oooh, look, a bomb to the most underrated tight end in football on 3rd and 1, JUST like a real NFL offense! Kevin Jones' 43 yards off the bench means they don't have to wear Matt Forte down to a nub! Look ma, no drops! Look ma, a Qb who steps up in the pocket or rolls away from pressure! Yikes! A screen pass! WOW, ANOTHER screen pass! Just like REAL NFL offenses. In their continuing kissing of the Le Brett's butt, ESPN'S bottom line touted Favre for hitting SEVEN DIFFERENT RECEIVERS! WOW, JUST LIKE KYLE ORTON, you sycophants! Charles Tillman's theme song: David Rose's THE STRIPPER or Carly Simon's NOBODY DOES IT BETTER? Is it just me or is The Skunk likely long gone to the house if he doesn't get tripped up? My gripe: TACKLING still needs to be better, Several potential losses were turned into positive yardage because the first tackler was shed. Yo, Tony Dungy, the challenge on the Harrison fumble was obviously just to massage the ego of your aging star receiver who now has a reputation as a fumbler. No wonder your record on challenges stinks out loud, Tony. Attention Referee Parry crew: Be better or be gone. If Uhlacher "roughed" Manning on that call, then earlier Feeny roughed Orton when he yanked him down after the ball was gone. And your ignoring of the replay evidence on the fumbled Colt kickoff was as pathetic as the Michaels-Madden explanation that yes, it was a fumble but there was no way to know who recoved ins pite of the fact that Garrett Wolf arose from the pile holding the ball. Oh, yeah, as promised, I take my crow WELL DONE, please.

#8 Rancid said . . .Loved the offense and defense represented on camera at the end of that game, the new star and the old star together. That shot was emblematic of maybe the biggest single change this year - CHEMISTRY. Matt Forte is getting much love from inside the locker room, and is it too early to make the call that this kid is a Leader with a capital L? At least a leader in the making?
I'm no fantasy football guy but I just realized this morning that Forte's getting a lot of attention this morning from non-Bears fans because he apparently had insane fantasy points last night.
I love your shoutout to John St. Clair - he had to go against one of the most fearsome pass rushers in football. It wasn't always pretty, but he held his own. And how about Josh Beekman's first NFL start? Not too shabby. Don't forget we have Williams and Buenning in the wings. But we've talked a lot about how different skill players have an impact on less than top-flight O lines, and you saw this in spades last night.
How about a shoutout to none other than Kyle Orton too? Tough guy, tall guy, Cool Breeze may have to be his new nickname - Neckbeard's a little ugly for that performance last night. Cool under pressure, is my (new) man Cool Breeze. C'mon PO'd, give it up for Kyle! He did awesome!
The spotlight is swinging over to the Chicago Bears. #1 with a bullet. Strong Buy recommendation. Soon to be the favorite of the fashionistas!
GO BEARS!

#9 TC said . . .Forte - What can you say, barring injury this guy should be the answer. For the past three years I have cussed out JA for his 2nd round pick. For 2 of those now I've had to jam my foot on my mouth. I'm beginning to trust him.
Defense - You are who we should have believed you were. Forgive us for our lack of faith.
Skunk - I have no problem with his error. The Giants FG return was the same way. You can see Lovie on the sideline going "no, no, no" and then changes to YES! Good players make the correct decision when they should. Truly great players are so great that they know they can do what common men can't and they aren't afraid to risk it when they have a shot. It was a great ST tackle. Skunk, you are great. If you see daylight, head toward the light!
Orton - He wasn't the hero. He wasn't spectacular. He wasn't bad either. He was, in summary, exactly what the Bears need at QB this season. He made some good thows and he made them when we needed them. He showed fantastic poise under pressure, which is why he is the starter in my opinion. And who didn't love seeing his awkward ass lumbering up the field without thinking of a slide trying for the first down. What can I say, I was pulling for Rex pre-season, but I really like how this guy fits what this team needs.Oline - They held, most of the time, and when they didn't, they died trying. We didn't see that attitude last year.
Babich/Lovie - because who the hell really knows whos in charge of this Defense. Whoever it was, give 'em a cookie. Job well done. We had a plan, with the personnel needed to carry it out, and we did it.
RT - I saved RT for last. I am big enough to admit when I'm wrong. I'm just not convinced I'm wrong, well completely wrong. I will say he had one crappy series. The one that ended in the 3rd down draw replay. Other than that he called a good game. PO stated in the last thread that he doubts Ortons ability to come from behind if need be. I have a simlar feeling with RT. The plan was good last night and it worked perfectly. I'm still afraid he won't be able to adjust if he needs to though. For those who think I just hate RT, you're right. But this is an in improvement for me. This is the first time I have written about him and not included some type of homicidal fantasy where he is victim. Keep it up RT, and maybe I'll call off the hit.

KO will have his problems at some point if not many points and we will need Rex. With a strong running game and a solid D Rex could do well but Turner would have to call a game that fits Rex. I really worry about that. Rex's preseason 95 yd drive was great to see. We knew he could do it.
Meanwile I'm just rooting for OUR Chicago Bears. Oh yeah...how nice is it to see a mature balanced person as a Running Back . I hated Benson more than anyone; including you Jeff!! He was poison from the day he held out

#13 Crown said . . .Awesome game. Urlacher's statement post-game summed up my thoughts perfectly.
Just a quick statement on Hester -- he's a risk taker? Remember all those times he fumbled the catch on a kick in the past couple of years? He got that under control. You take the good with the bad, and don't tell me it's not worth it. He'll find his groove soon enough.
And Peanut, he played a fantastic game. If you heard about what happened to his family in the preseason, you'd understand why his gameplay was a little distracted then. He's back to form now and I wish his little girl the very best.
BEAR DOWN!!!!! This is going to be a fun season to watch.

#14 BearDown1982 said . . .Thoughts:
1) Wale, the African Prince, played like the leader of the D-line. 3 tacles for negative yardage, including the safety.
2) Marcus Harrison is very quick for his size and seems to have a motor.
3) Forte for president. The guy has acted and played like a pro since signing with us. He seems durable, based on the fact that he kept getting walloped and coming back for more. I did not think he had that break-away speed though. That was the best and most surprising part of the game for me.
4) It is only a matter of time before Pissed Off writes that we would have won by 2 more TDs if Rex was the QB because he would have had 2 TD bombs to Hester.
5) It felt really good not having to hope and pray that #23 would score some points for us.
6) Orton is Mr. Calm, Cool, and Collected. I did not have that nervous feeling in my gut when KO dropped back like I used to have with Rex. I felt comfortable when Kyle dropped back and did not pray that he was not going to throw a pick. I think the rest of the team fed off his composure in the huddle as well.
7) Jeff, you are right. Dusty was constantly in the Colts backfield forcing Manning to step away or re-direct.
8) The D did not lose a step. They played fast from sideline to sideline. I am no longer worried that they are 2 years older from their dominating season. What a great win!

#15 Anytime said . . .Excellent game by the Bears. I was certainly one of the concern trolls during the pre-season. My apologies. Although, we still have a ways to go, but it was a great and unexpected win.
Apparently the defense CAN flip the switch...that was a great performance yesterday. They kept the Colts running game in check (although, I didn't think they tried nearly hard enough to establish it) and didn't allow Manning any big plays in the passing game. It seemed like there was 7 or 8 guys on the line of scrimmage all game...which was brilliant considering the inexperience the Colts had at O-Line last night and the fact that Manning was coming off the injury.
Briggs was awesome last night...gotta hand it to him. And I think Jeff is right about Dusty...anyone who watched the Chargers game last season knows how good he looked then. I was equally as impressed by Harrison last night. I really like our D-Tackle combination of Harris, Dusty, Harrison, and even Idonije. Let's hope they all stay healthy and we can have a nice rotation in the middle to keep them all fresh. When this D gets push in the middle...it is at its best!
Offensively, I was actually very, very happy last night. The line played much better than I thought they would against a speedy Colts D. Forte looks like he is the real deal and his versatility is exactly the kind of thing a team needs. It seemed like we were in 2nd and 6 or 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 1 all night. Much better than the constant 3rd and 9 or 3rd and 10 from last season. Ball control offenses work when they give themselves managable downs to work with...I hope to see more of this in the weeks to come. Also, I think Kevin Jones looks like he will be a good complement to Matt Forte. That is a nice one, two punch.
Who agrees with me here? I thought the most important drive of the night came after the Colts TD to cut the lead to 15-13 (after the Devin brain fart, and yes, let's cut him some slack...he will make up for it) The offense held onto the ball for 7 minutes and helped stop the momentum that had switched over to the Colts. We drove the ball down the field and pinned the Colts back on their end...which then resulted in the TO and the Briggs TD. Seems like in the past we would have just gone 3 and out and the Colts would have used the short field and taken the lead.

Even my own friends Friday night at dinner were talking shit saying "the Bears will go 6-10 or 7-9 at best!" And these are so called Bears fans!? "And forget their chances against the Colts!" You gotta be kidding me! Even if you are on the outside looking in you can see they are a better team on paper than the '06 Bears! If Orton can keep his composure and limit turnovers, the rest of the team will carry the load into the playoffs and beyond!!
Go Bears!! Musin and the Carolina Pussies are next!! The Bears have a date next Sunday at 12:00pm and there is a good chance they are getting laid!!

#19 Cbears said . . .St. Clair really didn't play that well, but the Bears only passed 21 times; not enough for him to have to stand in there and pass-block. 7 penalties...still too many. These will hurt us in close games.
The Bears were in the nickel almost the whole night, and the Colts only ran 15 times? What were Dungy and T. Moore thinking?
Kyle did a GREAT job of audibling from a run to a pass, and vice versa. He's light-years ahead of Grossman in terms of reading the defense, and adjusting. This was our first tast of the two-tight-end offense; put in the nickel, and we'll run. Put in the 3rd linebacker, and we'll pass...no LB in the league can cover Olsen one-on-one.
All problems aside, this was a fantastic game. There were a whole bunch of Colts fans at the bar my girl and I were at, and man did they shut up in the 3rd quarter. I can't remeber the last time I was this pumped up for a Bears win. Except for that Hester miscue (and yes, he had only one defender to beat if he escaped that first tackle), and the stupid head-butt penalty, I'm extremely suprised by the efficiency, and the grittiness of this team overall. The screen passes were perfectly called and executed when the Colts were bringing pressure, and the run-blocking was timed beautifully. Forte knows when to hit the hole hard, and when to wait for his blocking develop. I hope he stays healthy. While I munch on my crow sandwich, all I can wonder is: IS IT SUNDAY YET? GO BEARS! BEAT THE CATS!

#28 jeremy34 said . . .I assume there will be a new thread up later today but I want to say it was nice to see the upset. The Colts were heavily favored and the Defense won the game for us. They shut the Colt offense down, pass game and run game. Good pressure on Manning all night and the key turnover that lead to the TD was the kicker.
Matt Forte showed me a lot, I thought he looked fairly impressive in camp and preseason but I didnt know it was Lovies plan to give him the load....all game including 3rd downs with the exception of a few series where Jones got in. I wonder if he keeps seeing that load all year if he'll get run down? He's got age on his side thats for sure.
Outside of Forte and some good blocking for him the offense was pretty vanilla. Kyle had more than a few overthrows, one pass that should have picked off, he didnt look good in my opinion with the exception of one nice touch pass to Olsen on that 3rd and one, even most of his other completions were way high and the WRs were lucky to jump and catch them. Lovie was very conservative with him and he has to be. He didnt lose the game for us and thats all you can ask of him...its Kyle Orton. As someone on here previously mentioned we're going to have to come from behind at some point this year and I dont know if he's capable, I doubt it.
Very surprising that the Colts looked that beatable but hey apparently the Defense can simply flip the "regular season switch." That tells me that preseason means virtually nothing...for any player or position. We'll have to let this thing play out but that was a nice start.
Cant believe Andrea Kramer asked Urlacher how he felt about the "upset" that whole exchange was priceless. Phil, and others I'm not knocking on Orton, Ok well kinda but the team won and thats what counts but would I say Orton was Awesome?....that was a ridiculous comment....and NO! He was less than mediocre but he didnt lose the game for us. Thats it.

But at the same time, let's not get to crazy about this one win against a Colts team with some injuries and issues. Orton and Forte both came up huge when they needed to, though, and those were - in my mind - the huge question marks.
The hometown(ish) Panthers looked brilliant at times Sunday afternoon, so expect another test. Only without an elite receiver, I'm thinking it won't be as tough a test. I'll be in the nosebleed seats in Charlotte, cheering for the visitors.

#34 Da Coach said . . .Pissed Off,
You must be Grossman's second cousin or something. What about that 3rd and 1 throw to Dez for 25+ yards that was almost a TD. He got hit while he threw and still delivered it perfectly. Rex surely would not have been able to see #88 down field and would have likely thrown a pick or ran back 10 yards and gotten sacked. Most of KO's completions were not high and the WR were not lucky to catch them. That is what they get paid to do. No receiver made an amazing high catch where they had to leap 6 feet in the air. His first throw was off and maybe he had two more that were high. But one of his high throw completions to Lloyd was placed perfectly over the safety's head so that only Lloyd could catch it. Sometimes you have to throw high into zone gaps over defenders heads, that is part of being a good QB. It is sad that you are a bigger Rex Grossman fan than Bears fan. Maybe you are Rex Grossman.

#35 Bill said . . .PO'd you left out the beautiful thrown pass to Dez Clark that got the Bears down to the 1 yard line. He could not have put the ball in a better spot for Dez there. Orton might not have done anything spectacular last night but you have to admit the feeling on the offensive side of the ball with Orton in there is much more calmer. Instead of everybody waiting for the next big Rex blowup it seems like we can now concentrate on scoring points and sustaining drives. Just my 2 cents.

#36 Jokey said . . .Craig - I skimmed the article and it again proves there is way too many articles written by unqualified writers - due to the large number of web sites and the desire to have "in depth" articles about all the teams and games.
The Bears proved me wrong in that the O-line schemes were very effective. I enjoyed Al and John talking about Forte and in effect slapping Benson by saying lineman love it when a back is decisive at the line.
Jeff - I think you are right, and would make Turner and Babich the co-MVBs of the game.
I resepctfully disagree about Hester - it was dumb becuase he never bothered to assess whether the risk could work. He stood there faking no intention to run it out, and then took off as though the Colts bought it. It was obvious from the end zone shot that the Colts were coming hard all the way and that their special team coach prepared them for just that scenario.
And whoever posted that the ref crew was garbage is correct. Especally Lovie's challenge on the fumble AND the poor explanation by the TV crew (who claimed they got it from the replay booth.)
And Urlacher's roughing penalty - which Al and John took the extreme position in stating it was justice that the Colts didnt' get a TD since the Bears got a bad call. I wonder if they will be reprimaned or saying that.
September 8, 2008
#37 Shamen said . . .Craig I don't mind reading articles like that. They just help the team play angrier, which I think is good especially for the D.
Great to see Forte running, cutting, and dancing into daylight instead of into the scrum. Even better to see the O-line upfield engaging the linebackers, like Garza did on Forte's TD run. That block was almost as pretty as the run itself. Madden said Sanders took a bad angle on that play, but bad angles don't happen without good offensive speed. Besides, even when Sanders was in pursuit, he couldn't close the gap. I think Forte is faster than Thomas Jones was in 2006 and imo Jones had adequate open field speed.
BEAR DOWN!

#38 pankster in nc heading to charlotte said . . .A few quick thoughts:
1.) Hester is a home run hitter. Home run hitters will occasionally strike out when they are swinging for the fences. Keep swinging for the fences, Skunk.
2.) Is there such a thing as a clutch punt? After Hester's 'strike out', Maynard booming a punt from the back of his own end zone to the other team's 40 yard line has to qualify. Yes, the Colts scored on that ensuing drive, but they had to work a lot harder for it.
3.) It's unfortunate we went through all that contract crap with Briggs, but I'm glad he's still a Bear. What a nose for the football.

But I digress, You know if we had lost that game and looked at stats alone, we'd be blaming Kyle for the loss based on poor stats wouldnt we? But because we won, the rose colored glasses are on for the Kyle lovers. I love the team, and the win and the defense and the run game and everything but Kyle was not good. I'll give him the fact that he didnt turn the ball over (but should have had one pick) but outside of that I may have been able to throw for those stats.
Crown, I'm cool with you man and if you want to keep ripping me, feel free but I must say if you are who you say you are, a civil lawyer or whatever, I am disappointed in you, you come on here very immature like, not so much anymore but previously you had done some crude name calling (toward me and religions) and I find it highly inappropriate coming from a guy like you if you are who you say you are. #44 HesterFan23 said . . .Ah yes. You can count on PO'd to piss on Orton win or lose. The man who can't be wrong. Not sure anyone on the board said KO was probowlesque. Just that he played pretty well.
The only difference is PO'd loves to piss more and cry about Rex when Orton struggles.

#45 Pissed Off said . . .One bad play call on the night that I remember. I didn't like that draw call on third and about five or so.

#46 Pissed Off said . . .Great comeback in #43, I'm sure your just Crown or some other guy not wanting to identify yourself. Tell me where I'm wrong in any of what I said?

#47 Pissed off said . . .And for the record, if Orton actually plays a good game....like one where he throws a couple of key TDs, has a rating around 100, and throws for 250 plus yards, you know just puts together a good NFL QB game....just ONE!!! I'll be the first to eat crow and congratulate him. I'm not saying he cant be a decent conservative QB but I want a QB that can light it up from time to time, one that can get us quick scores if we need them, not just dink and dunk. Does anyone honestly think if were down by 14 or 17 going into a second half we can rely on kyle lead a comeback...hell no. All the offense can do is run the ball, Kyle cant go downfield in a hurry unless theres a missed tackle or two. The defense will have to get turnovers and score. You will see as the season goes on that he most likely cant put up good NFL QB numbers. Take the top 10-15 QBs from last year and average out the numbers, Kyle wont acheive them. If he does I'll give him props. Rex has done it. He was wildly inconsistent in 2006 with high highs and low lows but he came back in 2007 after the benching and was the epitomy of consistent and he lost this job to injury, which isnt fair and a fake QB competition. It doesnt make sense to me.

#49 Maurice Hurn said . . .Sorry PO'd, I'm not Crown. Just get tired of the Orton bashing. Like your "Kyle Fucking Orton" comment a few days ago. I replied to that under Had Enough.....You didn't answer that one. Also #10 above was me and I do like Rex and don't like to hear FWF's boo him. We are going to need Rex at some point IMHO. Guess I should pick a Post Name and stick with it. Will do.
With respect to where you are wrong? I have watched others try that with futility as you shift and slip from their specifics by various change of subject. Not worth the effort. There...that allows you to claim you are right again.

Help !Can anyone tell me where I can go and catch the Chicago Bears game this week (@panthers) in St. Louis, MO.

Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish. You are not free, however, to be an asshole. So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
