'Round the League We Go: Week 3

Wednesday, September 17, 2008 | Jeff

Nobody pulled down a 4-0 this week with the Bears costing yours truly a perfect week. I'm 6-1-1 to start the season against the spread. Now we take a look around the National Football League as we prepare for the third week of this remarkably exciting season.

Tampa Bay @ Chicago
Take Joey Galloway out of Tampa’s lineup and Devin Hester most likely out of ours and the chances of the "Shootout at Soldier" are greatly diminished. Neither has been ruled out entirely but a foot injury would diminish Galloway’s ability to run and the Bears should be overly protective of their most exciting talent.

Note on Matt Forte. He’s in the top five in rushing and is averaging 4.7 yards per carry. And I know it's early but the way this offense is built, Forte could become a legitimate MVP candidate should the Bears make the playoffs.

Kansas City @ Atlanta
Jason Whitlock wonders what the penalty should be for assembling the worst team in football. The Chiefs ARE bad but not quite the worst. (See much lower)

Sorry I missed this last week but here’s an old school writer on Atlanta’s surprising week one victory. Great opening paragraph. It's important to note because I don't see the Falcons winning more games.

Oakland @ Buffalo
The difference between the Chicago press and the Buffalo press is in the cities themselves. Chicago is a vibrant, dynamic city which can hold its own with some of the world’s best. Buffalo has never recovered from the Rust Belt industrial decline of the late 50s, early 60s. Subsequently the Bills’ beat writers try to uplift their readers; to give them something to hope for. Bears writers don’t. Rex and Kyle rarely got the support during winning campaigns that Trent Edwards is already receiving at 2-0.

Oakland’s Tommy Kelly – who became the highest paid defensive tackle in history this offseason – was arrested for a DUI. Cover your eyes kids. Right now. Are they closed? HIRE A FUCKING DRIVER YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! YOU HAVE ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD AND THIS BEHAVIOR CAN ACTUALLY KILL OTHER PEOPLE NOT AS STUPID AS YOU!

Carolina @ Minnesota
It’s one thing to not support the terrible Tarvaris Jackson, Mr. Childress. It’s another thing to hint at replacing him with John David Booty. Childress hitched his wagon to a bad player and a loss this Sunday (which I think is coming) will send that organization in extreme turmoil.

Miami @ New England
Can we stop with the Matt Cassel is the next Tom Brady stuff? Please. I beg you.

From this week's Gregg Easterbrook: The Dolphins are 7-27 since the moment Sports Illustrated predicted they would win the Super Bowl in 2006. By the way, SI had the Minnesota Vikings going 13-3 this season. That's a 12-1 stretch run.

Cincinnati @ New York Giants
Until I see otherwise, the Giants are the best team in football. Right now they've got the best wide receiver (Plax) and best defensive lineman (Tuck) in football. Their quarterback looks inspired, their offensive line is a rock and every tie you turn around they've got another running back gaining lots and lots of yards.

Houston at Tennessee
Steve Campbell believes that how the Texans handle the Hurricane Ike situation will test the character of the ballclub. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they’ll be back in Reliant Stadium any time soon. Tough spot for them this week.

Arizona at Washington
First Tatum Bell steals Rudi Johnson’s luggage from the Detroit Lions’ hallway and drops it off at his ex-girlfriend’s house. Then Vince Young almost kills himself because he got Rexed off the field at home. But Chris Cooley had to top all this by taking a photograph of his playbook and putting it on his blog. Want more? He was naked. More still? His penis is in the photograph.

New Orleans at Denver
Come on Shanny, you stole one.

Detroit at San Francisco
Classic Mitch Albom: “Honestly, this franchise should rename itself ‘Disneyland.’ It guarantees a magical time.” As much as I despise the guy's pixie stick sugar novels, Albom is simply the most readable sportswriter in the country.

St. Louis at Seattle
Koren Robinson is back in Seattle. Kerry Collins is back playing quarterback for Tennessee. Good ten days for NFL drunks.

St. Louis is the worst team in football.

Cleveland at Baltimore
Cleveland's Robaire Smith is out for the year, dealing an already suspect pass defense another blow. I maintain this is a 5-7 win team and a loss Sunday will matter-of-factly end their chances at making the postseason. That's a lot of pressure on a struggling offense against an elite defense on the road. Can you see where I'm leaning?

Jacksonville at Indianapolis
Sportswriting in America. You can’t make it up. Headline from the Indianapolis Star: “Manning Still Good.” Is he? Really? Still good?

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia
I felt bad watching Brian Dawkins getting beat up in the Eagles secondary Monday night. Dawkins is not only a great player but he's also a great man, spending a lot of his life rebuilding run-down areas of Trenton and supporting various Burn and Diabetes charities. The six-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro simply looks like he's wearing down.

Dallas at Green Bay
When Vince Young got hurt, the Titans got better. The Cowboys won Monday night and they got better too.

New York Jets at San Diego
The Jets are simply not as good as Buffalo or New England. Letting Favre be Favre is not going to fix that no matter what the Daily News thinks.

Starting to like the 'Round the League segment you got going here, lots of good stuff.

Do you remember the last time the Bears had to face so many recently former Bears? I can't wait for the defense to get their shot a Griese this weekend and Berrian in a month.

Carolina at Minnesota should say a lot about how the Bears would match up against the Vikings. Indy managed to pull one out, but I believe the Panthers are more similar to the Bears in terms of philosophy and personnel.

Dallas at Green Bay should be interesting too. Right now, you have to believe the Cowboys are going to be able to come into Lambeau and outscore the Packers. However, Aaron Rodgers has looked good these first couple of games. Although he's relatively inexperienced, he has size, a strong arm and as a Bears fan this worries me. This week I'm hoping Dallas goes into Green Bay like they did to Chicago last year. As we know, the Bears were never the same after the Cowboys home game last year. A Green Bay win over Dallas would be huge the Packers, but then again a Chicago win over Philly at Soldier would be just as big for the Bears.

Another game I'm looking forward to is the Steelers at Eagles this week. Obviously a tough loss for Philly Monday. How they bounce back this week against Roethlisberger and the Steelers will certainly have an impact on their frame of mind for their next game against the Bears, in Chicago.

It's weird how calm most people seem to be about Devin Hester's injury. We can only hope it's nothing serious, but how strange is it that the injury occurred without contact? Hester's health was a concern of mine going into this season mainly because of his new responsibilities on offense as a WR, but this type of injury is ver surprising. Regardless, I believe D. Manning will prove a capable backup for kick returns, but punt return might be a different issue.

Did anybody else wonder why Vasher was out there in Carolina returning punts? That seemed like an unnecessary risk to me. I wonder will the Bears will activate Earl Bennett for punt returns if Hester is unable to go this week? His results in preseason were mixed, but I'd like to see our 3rd round pick out there contributing. In what should be another close game this week (with more tampa-2 than you can shake a stick at) special teams could play a big role in the outcome of this game if the Bears offense can't sustain drives.

Finally, can we not discuss Rex Grossman anymore? At least not for a while? I mean, what's the point? Honestly.

Shaydy, I was also wondering why Vasher was returning punts. You have to admit he looked pretty good though. I dont really understand why people get worried about guys playing a different possitions though. If the coach tells you to play corner, then play 100%. If he tells you to return a punt, return it with all your heart. If you get injured, well, you get injured.
Anyone else have a feeling that Hester is 100% healthy? sounds like propaganda to me(which the bears are notorious for).

Crown, I would like you to tell me, that is if you are not Kyle's close relative, what about him makes you love him so dearly. What game or performances do you have to hang your hat on with him? There isn't any so I just dont know why you're such an Orton backer. My belief for Rex is warranted, I can at least hang my hat on some of his great performances from 2006 and the playoffs. What leads you to think he can be an NFL QB is beyond me. I guess since you're predicting 200 yds and 2 TDs next week, you must be looking to the future for that one game to live by. And this is a blog...so yeah I ramble, your not going to hurt my feelings dissing my spelling or improper sentences. I was making fun of your horrible commentary not your proper use of English.

The alternative offers at least as much mobility, evidenced by his post benching performances last year, a high level of consistency (3 TDs and 1INT over 6 games) and a team full of confidence in him. Did you see how they reacted to him last year? They play for the guy. You are wrong in nearly every aspect of your analysis....not a shocker.

And crown quit kissing Jeffs ass you flake, he isnt going erase your posts or anything....God what a kiss ass.

Maybe I'm the only one not worried at all about the Hester situation? Oh, I want him back, of course I do. But we have a plethora of good returners on the team, and I think their coming success will show that Toub is doing more magic out there than just throwing out the greatest returner of all time and watching him work.

While it delays his development as a receiver, again, to me that's okay - we have a good team and I'm not sure we can afford to waste a bunch of plays "developing" someone this year. Find the guys on our roster who can get open and catch balls when thrown to them. Brandon Lloyd, welcome to the Bears. You qualify. Rashied Davis, get your head out of your ass and your hands in gear. Mark Bradley, stop whatever you're doing to make the Bears' coaches hate you - PLEASE!

Did you see the poll on the trib asking if you'd rather have Orton or Griese starting this week....even I'd rather have Orton.

And did you see Benson has been talking to the Saints and Lions. Oh god, please, Matt Millen sign him. It would fit that disfunctional team perfect and then our D could take cheap shots at him like they did in training camp last year.

And did anyone else pick the Jets to win last week besides me?

#16 Tyger said . . .

I'm 5-2-1 so watch out.

I'm gonna call B.S. on your whine about Grossman and Orton not getting good coverage. Maybe Orton, because while he's been "good enough", he was hardly good. A lack of praise is justified. But Grossman was praised endlessly by the Chicago media through the first four games of 2006. You remember the bad because you want to feel slighted. I remember the good because it was such an exciting time.

OTOH, Edwards is doing well. It's not great, and he'll end up being an average QB this year, but he's ranked 12th in passing yards and 8th in passer efficiency rating. That's not bad and worth of praise when a team starts out unexpectedly 2-0. (On a side note, I remember being anxious and then furious the Bears weren't trading their two 3rd rounders to move up 5-10 spots to take Edwards. He'd at least give hope for optimism.)

This brings me to an argument that I have with Bears fans: WHY DO YOU CARE WHAT KIND OF MEDIA COVERAGE QB'S AROUND THE LEAGUE GET?!?!

Yesterday, on another blog, someone was trying to compare Grossman to Romo and complaining that everyone thinks Romo is great while Rex sucks. Someone did the same thing the week before w/ Rodgers and Orton. Why?

The way I look at it: if those guys are overrated, great--that's a big problem two good teams in the NFC will have to deal with. It's better for the Bears if, like Grossman, they are overrated and their organizations make commitments to them for too long. And if those players are great, that's even better. It means it might actually force the Bears to re-think how they build a team. No more "being good enough to win a second-rate conference" inspiring off-seasons of inaction and ineptitude. Competition is a good motivator.

Maybe someone can explain it to me, but I just don't get the fascination w/ the coverage of other QB's around the league. In my opinion, the only comparisons Bears fans should* do is to other QB's, and if the Bears are good enough or if the Bears can acquire one that's better. Anything else is ego.**

Anyway, that's my two cents.

*I admit that a blog is obviously not a place to tell anyone what they "should" do.
**As if blogs, by definition, aren't ego driven, right?

"Until I see otherwise, the Giants are the best team in football."

Pump the brakes, Jeff. I think we need to see them play a team whose coach is not calling his first game ever, or one that hasn't been outscored 79-16 and surrendered 963 yards in two games. This week, vs a Bengals team that's circling the drain, won't do it either. As far as I'm concerned, the jury's out on whether this team is even Top 5.

i also subscribe to the theory that if you win the championship, you're the best.

and tyger, the point i was making about edwards was about the way that city covers players, less about the bears. i thought it was a somewhat interesting point too. i certainly don't limit this column to quarterbacks and you might notice...i don't engage in the pointless quarterback debate unless i have to.

as for why people are concerned? because a lot of people blame media bashing on why rex isn't the starter. simple as that.

September 17, 2008

#19 Rancid said . . .

Why I'm not that worried about Hester.

1. I don't get the feel that it's real serious
2. He hasn't contributed much if anything at WR so we lose nothing there
3. We're obviously a running/defensive team again so I'm not even that worried about developing him into a stud WR at this time.
4. I would rather him take a couple games off, since we have some good solid other returners, and have him return 100% than risk having him play at 75% every game for the rest of the season because he didn't take a break.

In an unrelated issue, I actually like Griese. Not as a QB, but his personality. I really enjoyed watching his press conferences last year. He had a great team attitude and instilled confidence in me that everything would be all right. I think our players liked him. I think he'd be a cool guy to have around the office. But . . . they award no points for likability. And when he played, things were definitely not all right. He is not good enough to be a consistent starting NFL QB. This is something we need to prove on Sunday. I want Sunday to be one of the worst days of Brian's life. I want a lot of sacks, I want him hit repeatedly and picked off more than once. Sorry Brian, it's not personal, it's business. You're the weak link this week and our D is scary so I have one thing to say to you man... BOHICA.

September 17, 2008

#20 Al In WI said . . .

I'm calling this decision Sunday in the NFC North. This week we'll finally see what the packers have against a legit good team in a likely shootout. They almost blew one to the Lions last week and the Aaron Rodgers hype is already getting sickening. I think he and the pack could get exposed this weekend.
In Minnesota this will not only end the TJack era, it will signal the begining of the end of Childress. At this point I think it's even money that he even survives the season. The hype around this team has set them up for a major fall and the reliance on TJack is criminal from an offensive coach. Jackson lacks NFL ability, and has cost that team a playoff chance. They're looking 0-4 right in the face.
As for our Bears I think this is the moment for Kyle Orton. He's been living right on dropped ints so far this season and that's going to stop against a good Tampa D. If he plays poorly yet again, and fails in the clutch we'll see our QB change. If he plays well or the defense and special teams bail him out again then I think he'll be the starter for a while.
I think this week will tell us a lot.

Please no more rex talk for now. Not even I want to battle you out on it anymore. If it becomes plausible that there will a QB change, then that will be a good time to talk about it. Until then take off your over sized medium #8 jersey you wear to bed every night. No one on here wants to talk Rex. Root for the Bears and their current starting QB D-bag. Why not talk about something relevant and unrelated to Rex vs. Orton (i.e. a big play from the last game, defensive schemes, coaching decisions, etc.) Obviously you have a right to discuss anything Bears on this blog, but lets stay current on our comments rather than lamenting on a decision that was made in the pre-season. Your analysis is garbage and stop telling me "what you can hang your hat on." I'm not kissing Jeff's ass, just giving him respect for his well-written and on-point analysis. Something that you have yet to prove to me. Dude, what's up with all the hatred? Just as someone else said on the last post, you need to go through some anger management program because we can sense your rage on this site. Everyone can feel your anger. Do you have a Napoleon complex or have you just not gotten laid in a while? We are all apart of the same Bears community, show some love HATER.

PO'd, I too had the Jets. I am a terrible picker, I think I went 0-4. Exhibit A for why I don't gamble. Maybe 1-3 if we really won with the Bears pick. But I'll give that one up, I don't want to win gamblingly and lose really. I may not pick next week.

Tyger, I thought that was some really good stuff you wrote. You're right, why should we care? We shouldn't. And you're right that media coverage has, in reality, very little if nothing to do with who the Bears pick to play quarterback, even though some here think otherwise. The case of Rex is so strange that I would surmise that Chicago Bears' blogs are the only team blogs to ever suggest such a thing. The Rex situation is pretty unique to football.

This will be one week where I actually root for the Cowboys - yuck!

I too wish we could learn how to really execute a great screen pass - it certainly involves some acting, like the line just got beat and the QB is about to be creamed - Cowboys executed it flawlessly on Monday night. We've never done so. Yet what team should ever be better at acting like their line got beat and their QB is about to be sacked than ours? (cheap shot there)

I like how you use personal attacks because you have nothing else, your the guy who called me a Jew for God's sake a couple weeks back....your pathetic. I have no anger issues and I dont know who said I need anger management. I didnt see it. There is nothing tense going on here. I'm just ripping the QB play of the current guy cuz its horible. He sucks...if you can honestly say Kyle has performed well...well to the standards of an NFL QB that would be different but this is a trend not a mirage. This is Kyle and this is not good. I like too how you didnt address any of my prior points. You just keep repeating something about my Rex jersey cuz thats all you got. You have nothing...I almost want to stop arguing with you cuz you're too easy.

I hope the media in any town has nothing to do with who plays QB. They arent the coaches so I hope they're not deciding. And it certainly would be nice if the Boys beat GB and we won. We're going to need good D, good special teams and an A+ run game cuz we all know what we're gonna get from the pass game....the same thing we've gotten outta Kyle ever since he joined the league.

Anybody catch "chalk-talk," on the official website today? Dude points to Orton's 55-yard bomb to Hester last year as proof that Kyle can throw the long ball.

Um...consistency? Accuracy? Hilarious. 5.3 yards per completion career average (5.6 this year...ooooh!). Our running game is currently only 1.3 yards-per-play behind our passing game....and it's even closer if you take out Kevin "spaghetti knee," Jones's carries. The offense is a work in progress you say? So is the $600 million bridge to Wasilla, Alaska. Doesn't mean either will ever get done. But I guess I'm just being negative.....

GO BEARS! I hope to see Brian Griese laying in a pool of his own blood come Sunday. Geriatric bastard. We have to watch out for those cornerbacks, but otherwise, a low-mistake game should be a win. HOWEVER, I HAVEN'T SEEN THIS CONFIRMED SO DON'T GET ALL EXCITED YET. Regardless, get well soon, Skunk.

2. Lions sign Benson. Already mentioned...but it's just funny. Stupid Lions.

3. Vikings bench Jackson for Frerotte as starting QB. Talk about giving up on a guy quickly. That's a pretty desperate move for the 3rd week of the season. Good news for the Bears though...hopefully, the Vikes continue to implode on offense and this season gets away from them quickly.

PO'd has been nothing if not consistent every since I've been here, and that certainly doesn't make me agree with him always but he'll never shy away from a fight as long as someone keeps bringing it. Let's move on. BTW, a little bit of history, if Jeff deleted posts for anything other than racism or imposterism or spam, that would be the first time he ever did it (or even suggested he would do it) since I've been here. So that probably gives you some idea of his interest level in moving beyond this particular back and forth. In other words, he's a very benevolent dictator, but he's still our dictator. It is his finger on the delete button.

That reminds me of a Jack Handyism -

If you ever drop your keys into a volcano, just walk away, because they're gone, baby, they're gone.

I agree with you. The Lions have no reason to sign Benson, makes no sense to me. He has no other value, than running back. He's not going to start. He's not going to be the back up. He has no special teams value. Not sure why he was signed, unless they are letting Rudy go.

The QB debate will never end. Other than Rex or Kyle who do we want to be our QB? Is anyone interested in trading for Vince Young? How about An offensive Coordinator next season who should it be? Let's talk about that.

I guess VY is out of the question here. So Who is a good Fit to QB this team to a SB win. Other than Rex and Orton. Who from the QB's that might be available next season, free agent or rookie. Who would be a good QB to sign? Just trying to deflect the subject. Just wondering who everyone else is looking to lead this team in the future.

I love the Rex vs. Kyle debates. Sometimes it's gets a little too hot and personal, but what the hell. It just shows we care about the most important position on the team. Currently I prefer Kyle, but early 2006 I was totally convinced Rex was the answer. Now I see weakness in Kyle's ability on longer throws, so Rex is inching back up in my thoughts (still has a ways to go though).

I want the Bears to win! I want the best QB to play!! So I love debating which QB is better! Right now I think it's Kyle, but if he starts laying eggs regularly, I'll go back to Rex no problem. All I know is the Bears gotta win! You could put anybody but Favre and Bin Laden back there, if they can handle the blitz and chuck it deep, I don't give a fuck!

Plus this particular QB debate encompasses more than just the two players, it impacts the whole Bears organization. Like the coaching, (the "Rex is our quarterback" mantra was part of the reason Rex was hated so much by some). Or how the GM not wanting to lose face over another failed 1st round pick made benching Rex in 2006 when he was laying egg after egg impossible and caused us to not have post-benching Rex (no doubt an improved player) for the 2006 super bowl, (we might have won it with post-benching Rex). And it even spans to the preference of the press and their writing effecting the team's decision at QB, (although I don't buy into this aspect of the debate).

Anyway it's a Bears blog, I love this blog and I read it WAY more than I contribute to it just so I can hear other fans opinions on ALL things Bears. I love the Rex vs. Kyle debates. Mybe Losman... I never liked lefties tho! The Bears should of nabbed Kurt Warner 2 years ago when Garcia and Warner were available! Now look...Warner is playing decent for AZ and Garcia was a probowler last year!

Its pathetic it is coming down to 38 year old QB's!

Ok crown (Mr Hankie) we'll put in on the back burner until Monday (Shamus O'Toolbag). Is that OK with you (Andy Dick)?

Jeff I dont know where your getting that I'm not debating the players and their performance. I'm doing exactly that. Kyle is the player, and his performaces have been poor.

The Vikes ARE staring 0-4 in the face and Gus will probably get hurt after he throws for a TD (wouldnt that be nice) and then celebrates by slamming his head into the wall therefore injuring himself...does anyone remember that?

Jdawg I'm sick of your commentary too, if you want in the debate fine but you just keep taking outside jabs..."oh its getting old"....."its a middle school shouting match". If you dont like it dont read it. Your little posts have been annoying me far too long and so guess what....I just wont read them, I'm not going to keep bitching. And if you are all sick of the debate...I GET IT. So am I. But I didnt start it and I certainly didnt provoke the presonal attacks. The newbies do that shit until they gain a rapport around here and Crown hasnt done that yet. It will take a few months before he realizes you can debate without the personal comments. He called me a Jew for God's sake. But when I'm attacked, as Phil said, I aint backing off.

And this whole thing, back and forth is debating (minus the personal attacks). I've used stats and info from watching the games.....what about that is simple a "shouting match?"

And if you dont respect my opinion, thats fine. I dont care but I just cant believe anyone thinks Kyle has been good and that it was the right move given watching the offseason, training camp and regular season thus far. Even most outsiders will tell you he has been subpar at best. The win against Indy was nice and so it overshadowed his shaky performance but that Carolina game magnified the same performance a week later. Given Rex's consistency I'd say we'd have won that game and actually scored a TD on offense.

I lost a bet with myself about Cedric. I had predicted he would never play again, that he, like Ricky, had no interest in playing and would sit on the nest egg he had created by stealing money from the Bears. Guess I was wrong - or maybe he spent all his money.

If I was a GM looking at Ced, I'd need him to convince me that he gave a shit about playing football before I'd give him one penny. Then I'd make him take a lie detector test, cause I wouldn't believe his answer.

If he passed the lie detector test, I'd send him to a psychologist to find out why he quit on our team last year.

I'll be pretty pissed if Cedric Benson, who I spent a lot of hot gas defending initially, turns into something in this league for some other team when he could have done it for the Bears. I suspect that won't happen, but the guy does have talent...

September 17, 2008

#52 Oaktown34luv said . . .

Ced won't do anything for the Lions. He needs a BIG hole and it has to be right in front of him because he can't change direction worth a damn. He would have worked on the Dallas teams of the 90's when they were blowing open huge holes for emmit "I can only run straight" smith so he could break Payton's total yardage record. Yes I have sour grapes over that. Emmit was decent, but Payton was the shiz-nit!!

Benson: Knows the Bears' offensive playbook. Teams sign cast-offs from teams/rivals in the division all the time for this purpose. Did you see Chris Harris on Sunday? Totally baited Kyle into a few of those audibles, using his Bears playbook knowledge. Sheesh. Know your league people.

Just wondering still, but was it really windy on Sunday in additiona to the heat? Was not able to watch, but the fact that KO outperformed the OTHER QB ON THE FIELD should tell everyone something...Delhomme doesn't suck ass, does he? I always thought we'd be ok with him (or someone as good as him) at QB. He didn't connect on any big plays. He was 12/21, correct? Orton was 19/32?

I'm sick of this yards per completion crap. Completing a 5 yard pass is just as good as a 5 yard run. I don't care, especially with a large number of receivers coming in and out and then when your tight end hands over 10 points, it certainly limits the playcalling from that angle as well (not calling plays to Olsen).

Clark deserves to be a starter, straight up. In there consistently. When was the last time HE shit the bed?

Transplant, are you ex-player? Kinda bold to call of us out with a 'know your league, people' type of comment. Harris hasn't been with the team for 14 months. Do you really think he's that smart or that the Bears have changed nothing since last August? Harris had a heck of a game but I don't believe it had anything to do with being an ex-Bear. For the Lions to spend a roster spot on Benson simply b/c he knows our playbook seems outlandish at best.

September 17, 2008

#61 Oaktown34luv said . . .

Benson couldn't even get his own blocking assignments right, how could the Lions expect him to provide insight on the rest of the playbook?

Harris is a knock the snot out of you tackler. He used to over pursue with the Bears trying to get a lick in and would end up getting burned on deep coverage. I think that (and healthy M. Brown), is why he was traded. But now he has corrected his problem and become an excellent safety. He might know some Bears' playbook stuff, but I thnk his success against us was due to his over all improvement as a player and extra insentive against a former team.

September 17, 2008

#62 Oaktown34luv said . . .

Speaking of knowing the playbook and having insentive against a fomer team, GreaseBall is going to try and give us hell this week. Griese is a quick thinker in the pocket, but we all know he has a weak arm. To beat him we need to toss the bend-don't-break strategy and try to cover the short passing lanes. Our front four has been good at getting pressure on the QB, (gotta love this entire unit and that Harrison kid was good draft JA). If we can make Griese throw deep especially while on the move could be a pick or 2 for us.

The T-Joke thing is great, I've said it before but I think he's the worst QB I've ever seen a team intetionally start. By that I mean a guy they actually chose and hung in there with. Sure there have been bigger failures but at least you could understand what the team was thinking or even see the glimpses of talent. With Jackson there is/was nothing.
Benson to Detroit doesn't interest me except for Lions week which could be interesting.
The QB debate, I of course stand with Po'd and share his frustration at the current state of the position. I have to love how Crown claims to never use fake names to post under and then does so within the same thread. It doesn't fool anyone and makes your arguement look even weeker.
I'm relatively calm about this subject right now. I have feeling the Orton experiment is on a short leash. Either he will suddenly transform into a NFL starter in the next two games against top competition and I'll be shocked and pleasantly surprised. Or he'll falter and the switch back to Grossman will take place.
In my opinion, Grossman is head and shoulders above Orton as a quarterback. He gives this team a better chance to win because he throws the ball better, and scores more points.

The DailyHerald says McGowan (starting Nickle back) out for the year with a broken ankle. Ouch. Our secondary gets thinner. Manning taking his place. Now who's gonna return punts, with Hester out this week, Bennet? I like McGowan, he hits hard stopping the run but he is as bad as M.Brown on the health tip. He missed most of his first year too with a tore up knee. Let's put Urlacher at nickel and bring in Jamar Willams at MLB on passing downs.

September 18, 2008

#65 Oaktown34luv said . . .

Al in WI, Grossman is only head and shoulders above Orton if there is no pass rush. In a real game there is plenty of room for debate about who is better.

September 18, 2008

#66 Shady said . . .

Opinions are like assholes, but everyone has the right to theirs I guess. Al, I don't know why Orton would be on a short leash, this organization gave Rex plenty of slack so why wouldn't they give Orton the same opportunity? I can understand why you think Rex is the better QB, but head and shoulders above? I think not. At least not literally... which is ironic because their heights do actually impact their performance. Anyway, KYLE ORTON IS OUR QUARTERBACK!

If the Bears are going to see Grossman this year it will be because the Bears will lose 3 or 4 in a row, and I don't believe the team will let it happen. Of course the other way we see Grossman is if Orton goes down to injury... I was about to write no one should ever be happy about a player succumbing to injury, but that would make me a hypocrite (Favre, Rodgers, Pacman etc.) My point is that if Rex plays this year, it would most likely mean that YOUR 2008 CHICAGO BEARS have gone down the tubes and are most likely done for the season. I don't want that to happen. To steal a classic from Lovie: "KYLE is our QB and we'll go from there."

There is a good chance that this week, the Bears can pick up ground and/or pull away in the NFC North division. Dallas should prove too much for the GB defense. Minneapolis has yanked their QB after only 2 games this season for... Gus? (By the way, if the Bears or Vikings could ever find another QB, they would be two very good teams) I think "The Gus Show" should be very interesting to watch against a very opportunistic Carolina defense. On offense, the Panthers get Steve Smith back which is certainly big. And in the shit bowl, Detroit at San Fransisco, the 49ers should come out with a victory over Lions. The Lions. I can't believe they actually signed Benson. Read this excerpt, I think it sums up Cedric Benson in a nutshell:

"In a report by News 8 Austin, a 24-hour news channel in Texas, Martinez and Benson, a former Texas Longhorns back, were supposed to announce a program by Benson's charity to help children get winter coats, but Benson was not in Austin for the announcement.

'Unfortunately, but fortunately, Cedric Benson is not here today,' he said. 'He is actually signing a contract today to get back in the game with the Detroit Lions and the reason why that's a good thing is that the foundation will continue to grow as long as Cedric continues to do what he does on the field.'"

So Benson is supposed to help keep children warm this winter by providing them with winter coats with Chicago Bears fan's money, but he can't show up because he's busy getting paid in Detroit? Fucking Douche. Funny part about this guy Martinez is that he says he hopes Benson continues doing what he's been doing on the field. For the sake of those freezing children, PRAY that he doesn't perform as horrifically as he did in Chicago! Chances are Benson doesn't see much of the field this year. But of course as a Bears fan, I hope the team, especially Lance Briggs and Mike Brown, get their chance to payback all the hard work Benson put in as a Chicago Bear.

Although McGowan had a pretty bad game in Carolina, his injury could be very VERY crucial to the overall health and performance of this defense. Right now, the RMJ release is looking more than a bit questionable. D. Manning MUST step his game up if the Bears are going to control games with their defense. Bear down America.

My thought exactly Shady. It's not that I am extremely pro-Orton and anti-Rex. Rather, I know that if we end up going to Rex, are season and playoff hopes are likely over. I am first and foremost a Bears fan and that is why I root for our current starting QB to succeed. I don't want to have to see another QB change this year, that is usually never a good sign. Plus, I want to see what he has after sitting on the pine for three years. He was 10 and 5 as a rookie. I know we won most of those games based on the other two phases (D and ST), but Orton didn't lose games either. I would also like to see Dez get more involved in the offense. It seems as if whenever the O gets in any type of rhythm, #88 is a major part of that. Finally, I really have not posted under any other names. If you cannot tell, there seems to be a community of people who PO has gotten into the same bullshit with regarding Rex vs. Kyle. I'm done with the personal stuff, even though I really enjoy getting a rise out of Po'd (which, based on his moniker is surprisingly easy).
