Here’s a fun fact. The Chicago Bears have played four seasons under head coach Lovie Smith (2004-2007) - finishing last, first, first and last in the NFC North. In the years they finished last, they were swept by the Detroit Lions. In the years they finished first, they swept Detroit. 'Tis clear. If the Bears win Sunday…they’re going to win the division.
Sticking with the one game approach…
Your 2008 Chicago Bears over Detroit Lions
Well I always like the Chicago Bears and I like them a whole lot this week. I like the Bears defense to make up for injuries at corner by attacking the quarterback with the entirety of the front seven. I like the offense to continue developing, especially the quarterback, for four complete quarters. But mostly…I like that they’re playing the Detroit Lions. Here’s why:
DEFENSE
The Lions defensive stats after three games are staggering. The good news is they’re allowing 37.7 points and over 430 yards per game. The bad news? They are actually letting teams run at a clip of 207.7 yards a game. 207? For those of you who love college football, the equivalent there would be Syracuse.
OFFENSE
If you’re wondering how a passing game with Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams can be this weak, look no further. Jon Kitna has been sacked 12 times and is tied for the most interceptions thrown in the league. Receivers are useless if you can’t get the ball to them and the Lions struggle mightily to do that. That won't improve this week.
MOTIVATION
Three parts to this:
(1) The Roy Williams factor. No one dislikes this clown's first down gesture no matter what the game situation more than I do. But what really baffles you about Williams is the level of his delusion. According to RW, the Lions are never as bad as their record. But apparently Corey Graham is unfamiliar with his insanity and may just use it to get a little more revved up come Sunday.
(2) Being cut by Detroit is like being kicked out of AA for for being an alcoholic. They all suck, how can you be worse? Kevin Jones ran over the Bears last year and I have the feeling he's going to enjoy sharing the carries on Sunday. Look for a breakout game.
(3) The Lions beat the Bears twice last year in disappointing fashion but two important players are no longer around. Brian Griese threw seven interceptions in the two games. He's doing that in Tampa now. Shaun Rogers always played well against the Bears and last year was no exception with 6 of his 39 tackles and 2 of his 7 sacks. The formerly formitable defensive line now features Chuck Darby and Dewayne White.
FANS
There isn't a fanbase in the league that loathes their team more (and with good reason). A couple big plays and an early lead - the Bears will feel like they're playing in Chicago.
And more than everything else, I'm not going to wait until December to see this team win back-to-back games. Not this year. It doesn't work for me and it shouldn't work for them. Go out and dominate an inferior football team. With Aaron Rogers looking more and more like he won't play on Sunday, the time is Sunday to seize the NFC North. Take it. Take it.
Bears 41, Lions 20

I want the kind of shutout that makes the diehard mother fuckers leave in the first quarter. I'm talking 65-0 FINAL score. I'm talking Kyle Orton passing for 250 yds. and 4 TD's. I'm talking putting Hanie in in the 4th when were up 56-0. I'm talking Hanie ripping the Lions' shitty secondary. I'm talking 259 rushing yds. for Forte, and another 131 for Jones. I'm talking a fucking safety after fat ass Kitna can't scramble his sorry ass out of his own fucking endzone after Brad Maynard (thanks to some help from Wolfe) pins those ass holes at their own 1 yd. line. I'm talking OWNING these sorry ass bitches.

Here's some kind of positive facts that I think fly in the face of the most riduculous Power Rankings (like you said Jeff, why is Indy ahead of us and for that matter why are the packers ahead of us?)
Just looking at "points for" alone we are currently (excluding the bye teams) 12th
Points allowed:
12th (excluding 6 bye teams that are currently ahead of us in that category)
Combined record of our opponents:
9-6
This Lions game would be a great time for a sut-out and high scoring Bears offense to find their stride going into the next games.
Shock and Awe baby shock and awe.
Congrats to the Sox for knocking of the Twins!!
Stick with it and shock the world by beating the Rays!

#6 Shady said . . .So Jeff what you're saying is, if A=B and B=C then C= Division title? That was an interesting little fact about Lovie and the Lions.
I couldn't agree with you more on your entire evaluation of Roy Williams. He's all talk with little or nothing to back it up, and he constantly gives opponents extra motivation with poster board trash talking material. Instead of learning from this like other brash WRs have, he's continued to make a fool of himself and his teammates.
Normally I'm not a huge Vaughn McClure fan, but I really liked his piece on what happened with Kevin Jones in Detroit. I thought it was a well written article which gave readers a very good understanding of the kind of emotions that will be running through Kevin Jones on Sunday in Detroit.
Reading that Lions blog not only makes me laugh, but it also kind of puts things in perspective about our own organization. A lot of us like to complain, and with good right sometimes, but running a successful NFL organization is not very common these days. I think us Bears fans could do a lot worse than what we've got in Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith.
In order for the Bears to use last Sunday's win against the Eagles as a galvanizing moment, they need to follow it up with another big win this weekend. Chicago needs to go into Detroit angry to avoid a big let down. They need to remember what Detroit did for their record and morale last year and repay the favor this year in order to get some of the bad taste of 2007 out of their mouths. As long as this team rolls into Detroit on a mission, they should be able to dominate against an inferior team and an inferior organization.

Now Ill say this. This game is also very much a must win of sorts. A bad Bears team will lose this game, win games sporadically over the course of this season, surprise and delight us at times (colts, eagles) and disappoint us a lot more (bucs, panthers).
A decent Bears team will win this game, go to 3-2, and be solid if not spectacular on their way to 9-7 or 10-6. A decent Bears team will BEAT THE FUCKING LIONS, and beat teams they are suppose to beat.
They were not really suppose to beat the Panthers or Bucs. They were clearly not suppose to beat the Eagles or Colts. They could be 0-4 or easily 1-3, but they are 2-2.
I believe that last year was DEFINED BY THE LIONS GAMES. Fuck you if you don't agree, because you are just plain, flat ass wrong. I believe this year's team is still undefined, and will define themselves by how they play against the teams the are suppose to beat.

Luke, I too loved sitting through that analysis - thanks for supplying- that's the kind of stuff that is really teaching, which I swear they give us far too little of. Made me realize what an idiot I was too, for thinking that Gaither was an interior lineman instead of just the blitzing linebacker that he apparently is - DOH! I should leave the expert analysis to Mikeb. But that guy did seem nearly unstoppable on the interior, and he looks big, that's why I assumed...
If I didn't know what a good kid our Pride of Tulane was, I'd begin to think there's payback a-coming, because it looks like he sold his soul to the devil - how else to explain how this kid can do EVERYTHING! - so early in his career???? It's like his learning curve is so steep he's climbing up it DURING GAMES! What a freaking block! (Got another one... PHENOMENON - thinking of the movie) (another movie = Lawnmower Man)
I'm telling you guys - THINGS ARE GETTING EXCITING!!!
animal, you are DEAD ON with your last post! This IS a defining game, well analyzed! Anything short of the defensive gem and offensive productivity I am predicting we see, and we may have to temper our enthusiasm - even with the win. A loss and obviously everything changes -
BUT THAT AIN'T HAPPNIN BEAR FANS!
Chemistry is everything, and this Bear team is coalescing into a runaway fusion experiment! If there's one person to single out for the reason for the change, it's
HE WHO CAN'T YET BE NICKNAMED (despite my best efforts which appear to fall flat)
He IS the change (How about The Changeling? no - bad connotation) Sea Change?
Agent of Change?
I've got it, Blue Oyster Cult fans:
Agent of Fortune
No? Well I'll keep trying.
If I had to name any TWO Bears that are the difference maker so far, it would be
The No Name (that's kind of a good one too, as well as a classic Boston eatery)
plus
Cool Breeze, aka Neckbeard, aka The Soon to be Great KYLE ORTON!Yes, he's been a huge difference maker this year. He hasn't eliminated the negatives, he's just greatly reduced them, and been a positive-maker when few thought he could, and just generally been a great leader under center, inspiring confidence in both his offense and defense. Not as much as he will, hopefully. This guy really could be, maybe already IS, our future!
and if I had to go to three, I'd add
Your 2008 Chicago Bears Offensive Line
revamped out of... what? spare parts? baling wire? chewed up Bazooka Joe? a 4th rounder named Josh Beekman who turns out to look like a pretty dang good pick? A man (a MAN!!!) named John St. Clair who is turning into our own St. John? perennial candidate for Team Captain because of his heroicism?
I'm really proud of these guys, REALLY proud.
So those are my 3, no I didn't mention defense, to me defense is back to doing what they SHOULD, because they are HEALTHY. If I had to call out on D so far, it would be LANCE, PAYNE and IZZY - the latter two for most contribution with fewest expectations, the first for HOW FREAKING STUDLY HE'S BEEN!
But there it is.
If you read this far, let me tell you that I will be completely out of pocket from tomorrow mid-morning until AFTER the Bear game on Sunday - men's church retreat. I will be praying about a lot of things, but unfortunately not a Bears win, because I don't do that. But I will be back, refreshed, motivated, filled with spirit, and ready to celebrate

#10 Interesting... said . . .Glancing ahead at the Bears' schedule...the hardest part is already behind them. September put the Bears up against leaders in the NFC and the perrenial post-season power Indianapolis Colts. But the rest of the season...Detroit, Atlanta, Minnesota, BYE, Detroit again, Tennessee, Green Bay, St. Louis, Minnesota again, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Green Bay again, and Houston.
Tennessee might or might not be the real deal. I can't tell yet. The whole Vince Young meltdown thing does not bode well, in my opinion for any team to change Quarterbacks (quoting Lincoln, changing horses mid-stream). But the Titans might pose a viable threat. Green Bay is quickly deteriorating. St. Louis garggles balls. Jacksonville might be a good team eventually.
I don't know. I just don't see a lot of challenges in the rest of the season. I think this team, if they play consistently, if offense and Defense step up and refuse to grasp defeat from the clutches of victory, as with Tampa Bay and Carolina, then we might be looking at a legitimate team. 11-5? 12-4? Dare to dream.

#14 shonbear said . . .As cute as the Kevin Jones story is, you have to give the ball to Forte early and often. The Lions give up rushing yards bunches at a time and we have to take advantage. If this game goes like it should, Forte should have 100+ and a TD by the half and we should have a good lead. THEN you give the ball to Jones. Jones is a back up for a reason and was dropped by the Lions for a reason. We need to win games and to do that we need to give our playmaker the ball. I am all for letting Jones run on his old team, but take care of business first.
I'd love to see Rex come out and play the last 10 mins or so as well. He needs to shake the rust because you never know when he might need to come in, and he is probably the best back up in the game if he is confident. You need to give him a series or 2 to keep him confident if you get a big lead.

#15 Urlacher FTW said . . ."refuse to grasp defeat from the clutches of victory"
Awesome!
Animal, I'm totally with you on the Lions, but I think the Minnesota Vikings losses with Adrian Peterson killing us on the cutbacks and special teams had as much to do with defining us as the Lions did.
Can't completely agree with you Zmac on the Kevin Jones thing, we've (dablog) have been talking a lot aboout keeping Forte fresh and not burning him out, this game is the perfect opportunity to get that done with KJ. The only reason the Lions got rid of him was due to the injuries, so they were'nt sure he'd come back as talented as he left.
Yea probably good to let Forte start off the first quarter to get things going, but if we handle things and take a lead, then put in KJ for the remainder of the game. Shoot let's see some GW screen passes for that matter.
Only put in Rex if we get a 3 touchdown lead in the middle of the third quarter because I like the rust analogy and you never know there may come a time we need him, not ready for the Hanie experiment quite yet. Too much is on the line.
Not trying to start the usual QB controversy here, but I hate to say it that I'm intrigued with the possibilities of Rex's down field big play abilities and this running attack and good line play that's been holding up. I DON'T WANT THE CHANGE, just the thought that if it had to happen due to injury or something so any cats out there ready to jump a ball of yarn just calm down already.
On another note, I'm looking for a break out game with Marty Booker against the Lions too. I think with Kyle getting better on his timing with the receivers we will see less of a wide open Marty without Kyle taking advantage of it more readily.
Go Bears!

#16 Urlacher FTW said . . .I guess as for Forte if there are 200 yds to be had, he has been the one grinding out 100 yd games and getting stacked up last week for 50, he deserves to get the cake carries. Like he deserves to get the ball on 1st and goal from the 6 inch line instead of the fullback.
As for Rex, I do think he is the best backup in the league; but I also think he will be Rex regardless of how long hes been on the bench. I also think if Orton can keep improving and become our long term starter, Rex is gone at season's end. He is just not worth the hassle if you know youre not going to start him. That being said I would rather see Hanie if we have a big lead; but honestly if we do manage a big lead by the fourth quarter we will probably see Jones pounding the ball time after time to take the air out of it and get the thing over with; it won't really matter who is handing it off.October 2, 2008
#17 Ronaldo said . . .Oh... why is everyone so worried about this WR tandem, just heigth? Because to me, Wayne and Harrison are much scarier names especially with Manning throwing instead of Kitna. And we handled that okay.

Phil- Keep working on the nicknames, it'll come to ya.
Knights and Animal - I feel you. We need to squash any doubt about who owns the division.
After Sunday, there shouldn't be any doubt, Da Bears own the NFC North, the other teams just play in it.

#19 Ronaldo said . . .My money is on Rex heading, or being traded, to the Chiefs some time late this year or in the off-season. Traded, if JA, is smart and realizes he's at least worth a draft pick. Let go and signed by them if we're too slow to realize his value to other teams.

#20 Phil from SATX said . . .They'll put in Rex if they want to pump up his trade value, to show him off against a pathetic Lions D. They'll keep him on the bench if they're planning on releasing him. A big 4th quarter Bears lead should show our hand as to our intentions with Rex.

#21 Phil from SATX said . . .Ronaldo, thanks for the encouragement, but just so I'm not shouting words into the wind on an interstate going 95, please, anyone, if any of these names resonate with you, let me know!
There's the desire to give our favored son a nickname, but it's also an experiment - I have long wanted to test the power of our blog, and the greatest way to do that is if we can establish a great nickname and start repeating it over and over again. If it takes, we'll know we did it.
But it's got to be the right one. We tried for a while on Hester, and unfortunately the world's worst nickname continues to stick (Windy City Flyer? UGGGGHHH!) because we never decided on one.
But they come to me fast -
The Power of One
They come too fast, too furious. Wait a minute - The Fast and Furious - TFF - that's okay...
So if you ever hear one you like, let's discuss, and be sure to throw out your own. I still like the simple ones (The Answer, The Truth, The Future)
Oh, I had another one - he's from Tulane -
The Pride of Red Stick
Red Stick Rocker
Red Stick RocketHow about The Warrior?
No I don't like those but this is brainstorming, right? No wrong answers.
Putting Rex in to showcase him for a trade is brilliant, what we need to do. QBs are too rare in this league, we could actually get something for him while knowing his ticket is up here.
One thing I know is we don't have to worry about hurting The Warrior's feelings if he doesn't get that many touches in this game. This gifted young man is not about stats - he's about winning. He's not about himself - he's about the team. He'll do what he's told, and understand the reasons possibly better than those who are giving them.
I too am NOT worried about height in coverage - we have great corners, and they'll get the job done. But because Lion's only chance of winning is the medium to long ball to WRs, we will see them having at least some success with it - we'll get burned for some touchdowns. But there will be turnovers galore there too - that's why it'll be 40's against 20's.
See you Sunday!

#23 Urlacher FTW said . . .Rex is done with this organization at the end of the year unless KO gets hurt and Grossman leads us into the playoffs. Not gonna happen. His time with the Bears are numbered. Lovie is totally done with having to say, "Rex is still our quarterback and we'll go from there." I don't think Grossman comes in for any drives, even if we are up 20 points in the 4th quarter. The coaches want KO to keep developing and get used to the rhythm of closing out games from week to week. Orton still needs to get used to drives where the Bears try to milk the clock and maintain a lead. I'm not saying it would be a bad idea to give him a couple drives at the end of the game if we are up big to boost his trade value. I just don't think it will happen.
The reason why Calvin and Roy scare me is because without Peanut, we will be stuck with corners all under 6 feet (Vasher, McBride, Graham). The Williams' receivers can out physical you even if you play the ball well. Kitna is not that bad if he can get 3 or 4 seconds in the pocket. This seems like an opportunity for a letdown game. The Bears need to win this game they are supposed to win.
October 2, 2008
#24 Crown said . . .Not trying to split hairs but Corey is 6ft, he is only 1" shorter and 5 pounds lighter than Peanut, now Mcbride is ony 5'9", so I suppose if Peanut and Vash are no goes there could be some concern there, just have to blitz more.

#25 Rancid said . . .No splitting hairs, nice attention to detail FTW. But, Williams is still 6'2 and 211 lbs, and Johnson is 6'5, 239 lbs. Those are some big receivers. I'm just worried because this reminds me of the 4th game last year where the Bears lost to the Lions 37-27 and went 1-3. In that game, like the one coming up, our secondary was depleted and Kitna ended up with a pretty good game: 2 TDs and 250 yards. I agree, it comes down to really getting after Kitna with pressure and blitzes. Vash wasn't at practice yesterday with a sore wrist, although I think he will play. But, Peanut sounds doubtful for Sunday with his recurring shoulder injury. Don't mean to sound negative, just want the Bears to stay on their toes.

#26 said . . .I'm not ready to call it a guaranteed win, or call it the infamous "trap" game either. It's an easy should win. Have no doubts, the Lion are not good enough to beat us. If this were to end up in the L column it's because we screw it up. It is a scary matchup at WR but when you look at what we faced week one that subsides.
Trading Rex early or even late in the season is nuts. You're one injury away from Caleb Hanie as the only QB on the roster. I have some hope for the guy in 2-3 years but he can't seriously be considered potential starter material now. We are paying Rex money to be KO's replacement. I assume in the off-season that as long we are ok with KO season long performance we will sign a FA vet (like Greaseball was) to be backup and continue to bring up Hanie as that prospect guy. I think Rex will have a shot at redemption elsewhere.
Nicknames are tough Phil. I have tried to think of ones related to two things. Either something Fort related, or a throw back to Sweetness himself. You could call him Nutrasweet or something. Nothing great worth throwing out there has come to mind yet. I like our reference to Hester as the Skunk, I haven't seen it elsewhere, and while jeff did first suggest it as a nickname, I think it came from a Madden segment didn't it?
Good teams win the games they should, which is why we weren't good last year. This year, I think we're good. So stick it to damn Lions already.

What information do you have regarding Rex working his butt off? Because it sure looked to me during the first few games that he was moping a lot and detached from the game. When Orton comes to the sidelines to talk to his coaches and look at pictures of the defensive scheme, I have seen Hanie there, but not Rex. Hanie, the rookie, looked like he was trying to help out KO by telling him what he was seeing out there. To me it seems like Hanie has played the roll of back-up from the sidelines more than Rex has thus far. Last week was the first time I saw Rex (briefly) interact with Orton and the QB coaches. I have seen him talk to the media regarding his status only one time where he promised to be ready in case anything happens to Orton. As long as he is practicing hard and ready to perform as a backup, then I am cool with him. But, it certainly has not looked like he has worked his butt off in trying to help Kyle during the game. I know losing your job is not the easiest thing in the world and I am glad he is a little pissed off, but I have seen no indications that he is trying to help the Bears win from the sideline.
October 2, 2008
#34 Urlacher FTW said . . .Crown: You know why it looks like Rex was moping? Because the media had a story to tell and showed him on the sidelines when he happened to look mopy. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. You wait to see what you want to see, then "go to camera 4". It's a pretty old trick. Sort of like the guy that writes down who will win the next game. He can look like a prophet pretty easily. Write down both teams and put the paper in two different spots. Duh.
Honestly I like both QBs. I wouldn't mind keeping them both either. Even "Vinny interception" turned into a halfway decent QB. Remember that?
What cracks me up the most is when Ron Jaworski, or however you spell it, talks about QBs making bad decisions, you could go back and look at the film all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that what YOU see on television isn't what the QB sees on the field, especially when Jaws has to use about 4 angles to describe what is happening. "Let's show you the endzone view".
They ought to put cameras on QBs helmets so when they analyze film the coaches can actually see what the QB sees...

But I do like the fact that we can focus more on the passing game for the simple reason that there is no run to stop. But all this talk about Jones getting the bulk of the carries I don't agree with. Sure, give him more than he has had, but the more Forte highlights and touchdowns there are, the happier I'll be. If Kevin Jones scores a touchdown on the goal line I'm gonna be pissed that that carry wasn't for our new stud. I want HIM to be the one the Lions go home having nightmares about. I want them to forget all about 'The Burner' Turner making their line look like sissies. I want everyone to forget about AP up there in Purple-Pussy-Peopleville.
And about that clip I posted. Didn't you like seeing Kyle running down the bench pumping up his teammates? He is a leader. That's what this offense needs. And as I continue to say his work ethic and effort towards getting better is very motivating for the teammates as well. These guys are the underdogs no one expected to be a part of this season. They're the Bad News Bears. This team with the progression we've seen out of the offense (if it's not halted) has as good a chance as any at getting that famed trophy. We can beat ANY team on the right day. And as long as KO continues to make strides towards becoming what he looks like he could become, we might have our second trophy before you know it.
Let's go get us a trophy named after a dirty, dirty Pack Man.
Let's show that the G-Men aren't the only guys out there that can pull out a major upset when it matters (because if we go, you know no one will pick us to win).
Oh, and Phil. I've been trying to come up with a nickname for Forte (nicknames are something I'm usually good at) but I've been drawing a blank. I think that if there is a nickname to be had for him, it'll be when we know more of his style and big play ability.
Cheers gentlemen, and BEAR DOWN!!!!

#39 Luke said . . .Tommie H is suspended for the Lion's game? Think he wanted to play, and the coaches won't let him? Weird. Not a player I would expect to get suspended... for anything. Izzy is playing almost up to his level anyways, so I suppose it doesn't really matter.
Thoughts? Rumors? Innuendo?
And please stop w/the Rex talk. Just stop. Really. I'd much rather hear a discussion about Urlacher's toe fungus, or Craig Steltz's stamp collection. Christ. Kyle can read a defense. Rex can't. End of story.

#40 Max said . . .Suspended? For 'unspecified reasons'? Something fishy is going on here.

#41 Luke said . . .Yea, i just saw that on the site as well. Thats weird yea? Was he late to practice or whats going on? Tommie has never really been a "problem" with the Bears.
Normally when a player is suspended they give at least a vauge answer, like violating team rules or something to that affect. "Unspecified reason" is a little strange, even for Lovie.
October 2, 2008
#42 Viva said . . .I don't know. Either way our line can play, and another week could maybe help us get the old Tommie back for week 6 against Matt Ryan and 'The Burner.' You KNOW he really wants to play this game though. First division game. Jon 'Tommie Harris owns me' Kitna. Shit, drop him back in coverage and he'll probably pick Kitna's sorry ass off. 10 wins?!? There's a problem there Kitna: You're still the quarterback and your D sucks save Ernie Sims and maybe Leigh Bodden. What a turd.
Anyway, hopefully Tommie realizes it's not cool to bang the coaches daughter and gets back in there and gets his penetration done on the field.

Here is a nickname for Forte... Stache.
His cheesy mustache is what it is. Not to mention, Stache sounds good with a deep Chicago accent.

#44 RandomName said . . .Michael Smith just reported on ESPN that Tommie had not been honest about why he had been missing treatments for his knee. Lovie pulled Tommie out of the defensive meetings this morning and informed him of the 1 game suspension. Apparently Lovie doesn't like being lied to. Oh well, nothing wrong with an extra week of rest I guess.

Jeff since you seem to maintain this site and stay update with everything how about adding a little url icon of some sort, the Bears C for example.
yeah just a suggestion, hope you take it though. just for my bookmarks ya know.
October 2, 2008
#46 Your Boy Roy said . . .Right on RandomName. Jeff you need a url icon, or a bookmark icon, or what ever in the hell you want to call it. Then I can put it on my Firefox bookmarks toolbar, right along with ChicagoBears.com, NFL.com, ESPN, and SI.com. Might be copyright issue w/ the wishbone C, but your competitor "Bears Gab" uses it with a nearly unnoticably lighter hue of orange. Go for it. E-mail me if you have any q's.

#48 Bearman on the Sangamon said . . .Well if the Lion could spot us 21pts like they did for there 1st 3 games, fine by me.
key to the game to me is limit DET offense from getting on the field,an leaving RW an CW an MF on the sideline. With a couple guys down on DB it would limit them from getting exposed. The Bears will probably play alot of zone,so expect alot of catches underneath an tighting up in the Redzone.
Running the ball early an often is what I want to see,Add in a couple of no huddles would be great.
October 3, 2008
#49 Decatur Staleys # 7 said . . .Hmmm. With the news of Tommie Harris' suspension came an unsavory wave of uncaring. What is with that guy this season? He's gotten ONE tackle in each of the three games he has played. We're talking the highest paid DE in the league. Harris rocks my socks off, usually, but what the hell? I think the Defensive line looked very good against Philadelphia without Harris, and the worst I had seen them in years with Harris against Griese and the Bucs.
Vasher is looking like he'll be out for Detroit as well. Is it just me, or is Vasher much less effective than he used to be. I used to think he was the premiere corner on the team, but Tillman has securely taken the cake from him. In 2005 he was on fire with 8 interceptions...but he has gotten five since then...granted he missed the majority of last season. Perhaps I'm too pesimistic.

#51 NittyGritty34 said . . .Maybe Tommie was humbled last week after his benching and broke down to Lovie about why he's declined, then Lovie is punishing him for lying about how hard he's worked to rehab his knee. This may be one of the most impressive things Lovie has shown in the way of leadership.
How about "Mass Flavor", kind of a coin to Sweetness?
Mass flavor has something to do with what's important in cooking, if you don't have just enough garlic or oregano or salt and pepper, then things just don't taste right, what would the bears offense taste like without Matt Forte, the Mass Flavah!!
I really laughed out loud when I said "stache" with the deep chicago accent. People stopped to see what was worng.
Hester has Skunk, Windy City Flyer, but whenever I see him do something great I can't get that "ridiculous" thing out of my head.
The Bears need to crush the Lions and follow it up with some major run stopping against the Falcons because if it wasn't for "the Flavah" doing so well I would have continued to cry about why we didn't pick up Michael Turner throughout the season.
See how I used it several times there, like it had already caught on?
It's really hard to imagine any nick name better than or approaching sweetness...

Forte Matte. Not my idea. But my vote for best nickname. Jeff put a polling feature on here and let us vote and settle this.
By the way, I am still calling 23 Devin Fucking Hester. Be honest, isn't that what people say more than anything else when he breaks one?

#70 Rancid said . . .While I've been lurking for the past nine months, it's time to end my silence.
First, this is far-and-away the best Chicago Bears community on the web. While there are days when the whiners gain undo attention, Jeff runs a tight ship so that we all can enjoy the discussions. By the way, Jeff, I have to second many of the recent compliments you've received. If you were a football player, the pundits would say you are overachieving. They'd be wrong. You're hitting your rhythm. Great work!
Second, I'd like to go on record as a KO supporter. I'm still unhappy about the lame decision to replace him in the waning days of the 2005 season. That wasn't the time to knock an inch of rust off Rex.
Finally, regarding the nickname ideas; how about 'Forte-Fire'? (Rhymes with fortifier - an addition that strengthens.) The addition of Matt Forte definitely strengthened our offense. The use of fire also alludes to his ability to burn the defense. I also like Catch-22, but if it's associated with Emmitt Smith, it loses some shine for a member of Payton's lineage.

#71 Viva said . . .Phil was talking church and got me going all religous. How about . . .
The Messiah
You know, once the football gods looked favorably on us (80's), then he turned their back on us for a time(90's) but promised that one day the messiah would come to return us to who we knew we were always meant to be. Now Messiah has come.
Of course, non church people will hate it because it's religous and church people will be offended and consider it sacrilegious. I really suck at this nickname thing.
