Apparently Zack "Attack" Bowman made the game-ending interception against the Minnesota Vikings with a torn bicep that will now require season-ending surgery.
I asked for guts this weekend. I got guts.
The Bears couldn't have the bye week at a better time. They have one goal and one goal only: get healthy in the secondary.

How did he tear his bicep? Mother fucker.

Don't forget the front 4 need to get after the QB to help out the secondary. Still didn't see enough pressure from Tommie and the defense last week, even though he came through at the end of the game with a big sack.

Shoot he even showed up Mike Brown on this one.

#6 Wayne Scott said . . .That is really sad news. Kid played with a large pair of cajones. At least, Lovie and Bears organization tend to take care of their players with skill and heart. I am sure he will be back next year. Hope so.
On another point, I have to give it to Jeff. For a long time, I suspected that Jeff might be old Neck-beard's secret gay lover. However, he has been right since before the season even started. I had been one of those who thought that Grossman, with all his problems, was the answer. No!!! KO looks like the real deal. Poise, touch, smart, and game presence. I don't know how Jeff figured this one out, but he did. God Bless, Jeff.
By the way. I live here in Minnie. 'Queens fans are absolutely CRUSHED by the last game. Ha, Ha, Ha.
Bear Down Bears.

#7 jeff said . . .This weekend may be the most valuable week of football for us... because we're not playing. Everyone is hurt and this is what we need. Orton and the special teams got us this one. Now let's get our DB's healthy. Sucks about Bowman but thank God he was there when we needed him. Hopefully he'll be back. Some of our vets need to follow his example when it comes to heart, toughness, and making the most of the opportunities you have. And congrats to Wolfe, he deserved to finally score.

#10 mikebdot said . . .I railed on the Bears' pass D last week. Yes, the front four needs to get more pressure. Some people are calling for more blitzing, but that is an especially dicey situation with the starter corners out.
Babich seems to have a hard-on for the fake blitz, in which Urlacher and Briggs run right up to the line in the gaps and dance around like they're constipated, but instead of actually blitzing they rush back into coverage. I don't ever recall the Rivera defense doing this, although I could be mistaken. When I first saw this move, I was like, cool, this seems like a good plan, especially against QBs who shred the blitz with audibles (like Manning and Brady).
Having watched the gradual deterioration of the pass D over the last two seasons, I have done a 180 and now think it's a terrible idea. The simple reason is that, as quick as our linebackers are, they can't quite get back to the area they need to cover for the Cover 2 defense to "work". (Note my sarcastic quotation marks.) The quick slants, which Matt Ryan threw on over half of his throws, can be defended by linebackers dropping back into those lanes. When they're trying to recover from being all the way up at the line for the fake blitz, they can't quite drop back as quickly as one would like.
Show it once in a while, just so the other team doesn't know we're blitzing when we DO crowd the line, but for the most part, we really need to ditch this wholly ineffective technique. ESPECIALLY when we're playing rookie QBs like Matt Ryan, who only benefit from having the opposing linebackers out of position (since, no matter how good a rookie QB looks, he's generally not audibling on every play).
More generally, I will note that the Bears' defense pretty much got punched in the mouth last week against Atlanta, but even the last-second field goal meant that they only gave up 26 points, which isn't great but isn't terrible. That they gave up a 41 spot, despite no offensive turnovers and no big special teams returns, should be the ultimate wakeup call. With the bye coming at a great time, the Bears better come out and play some fucking defense in two weeks.
Also, Kyle Orton? You are fucking fantastic.

I'm already tired of this "oh, the defense sucks this season" canard. I know Jeff has been right about certain things, but I will say right now that putting Briggs and Urlacher up on the line is a GOOD idea. They played really well the first few games in that situation. It only works if you do it for most of the game though and blitz fairly frequently and drop linemen back into coverage to actually tackle or intercept/bat down passes underneath. At least, on occasion. When was the last time you saw Tommie Harris drop back into a zone underneath? Dusty? Israel? Alex Brown? Ogun? NEVER! That is the problem as I see it. We never have linemen dropping back underneath to wreak havoc. This is a must if you put linebackers on the line and they suck at blitzing. That's another problem. Our linebackers fucking suck at running through pesky fucking running backs. They don't just plow them over or jump over them or anything crazy like that. The get stood up and stand there with a thumb up their asses. That's the one thing I can't stand about Urlacher and Briggs and Hillenmeyer really. The only time they sack the QB is if nobody touches them. That's fucking lame.

#13 Joseph said . . .Sorry been out of town and haven't had a chance to chime in yet. Though I did have the pleasure of watching this with a good friend of mine who happens to be a Vikings fan.
quick thoughts:
1. KO rocks. Been saying it since the beginning of the season, along with some others (Crown, animal, Jeff). His recognition of what the defenses is impressive. I vaguely remember commenters on this board remarking on his inaccuracy or his weak arm. I call bullshit.
2. As much as we're all impressed with Forte and his ability to find yards where there are none to be had, I'm overwhelmed by his ability to pass block and pick up blitzers. I clearly remember him standing a couple guys up and knocking them back in the hole. I've even called for giving him a break every once in a while in favor of Jones, but I'm convinced the reason the coaching staff (RT) hasn't done so must be because they feel there's a drop off in blocking and pass-catching.
3. St. Clair deserves a medal.
4. Our pass Defense sucks. We've all been saying it for weeks, but if this shiznit does not pick up, I can not look at that sideline in 2009 if Babich is standing there next to Lovie. To be shredded by: 1. washed up old QB in Griese 2. rookie QB 3. washed up old QB in Ferrote is pathetic. There's no excuse for it. It's clear it's a scheme/strategy issue when we've been consistently getting picked apart on slants and in routes week after week.October 21, 2008
